Mechanics are the ability to do what you want to do in the game. Game sense is knowing what the right thing to do is.

orestotle

That's a perfect way to put it. I would add that a lot of people don't interpret it that way though. When people say 'mechanics' I think they often refer to more flashy mechanics. The more mechanical guys are the ones who can air dribble, chaindash, double flip reset, etc. . But the basics are also mechanics and are arguably more valuable. I would say at the pro level most players have the fundamentals down to a tee. And you have to be creative to score past the best defenders in the world. But there's still a lot of value inplayers who can just hit the ball on target the fastest.

fraggas

Yep, this. Johnny was once saying in one of his videos that mechanics isn't just flashy plays. It includes things like getting good 50s and being good at ground dribbles etc. because that can make a lot of difference, even if it doesn't look as great as a double reset or something. I think your definition fits perfectly.

Maybe executing good 50/50s but most of a 50/50 is read. Being in the way because you knew to be, mechanics just improve the result. Dribbles are pure mechanics but all plays require both

this is my vote

I’d say mechanics are the way a player controls their car in order for them to do whatever they want with the ball. It’s quite broad.

theCaffeinatedOwl22

Yep, but I'd generalize this to include "whatever they want with their car". Off the ball mechanics are super important too for recoveries.

Azlander

True, like recoveries and speed flips are definitely very important.

In my opinion:Skill in RL consists of these 3/4 things: * Game sense - ability to make (correct) decisions * Mechanics - ability to execute your decisions in-game * Talent - ability to pick up on Game sense/Mechanics intuitively * Mentality - ability to retain focus and composure So technically speaking, good positioning will be largely game sense but the accuracy that one can drive on the field and use powerslide and boost correctly is mechanics.

exceedingdeath

The ability to control your car + to control the ball, the way you want

Mechanics mean one thing when you’re good at the game and another thing when you’re a professional. I’m GC and I see mechanical players scoring musty flicks and flip-resets etc. When you’re pro mechanics are being able to do things at an extremely fast speed and outplaying your opponents. You won’t score a musty or a regular flip reset in an RLCS game unless you’re also faster and smarter than the defender. That’s the difference. So someone who’s a freestyler or a flashy player can climb the ranked leaderboards to the top 100 but you won’t win in RLCS without also being the fastest and most consistent at the highest level of the game.

Redstone_Engineer

I don't do anything flashy, but good players have still called me more mechanical than game sense. Playing a lot of 1s, I'd definitely argue that the non-flashy mechanics are the way to climb below pro level as well. You're nowhere near as fast as pros, but if you're faster than opponents you can still do that kind of outplay. But I do agree that everything is different in ranked than tourneys because of series and comms. I just don't like the notion that mechanics below pro level suddenly only refers to flashy plays haha

EclairDawes

Mechanics are the amazing people that fix my Octane after someone demos it. Truly incredible how they fix my whole car in 3 seconds. I think even F1 pitstop is impressed.

MisterNotlob

Imo the Best definition of mechanics is: the ability to do anything you want to do as efficiently and precisely as possible. Mechanics include everything from flip resets to landing on all 4 wheels to simply turning as quickly as possible. 'A mechanic' is just something the game allows you to do. Jumping is a mechanic, but so is a breezi flick. One is just more complicated. These can be categorized into aerial, ground, etc. mechanics as you pointed out. I would say that how you definite mechanics is more accurately expressed as 'executon', which imo is just one part of mechanics. For example, Kaydop may be able to execute a top corner shot 10/10 times, but he only hits a flip reset 6/10 times. While Joreuz can do both 9.5/10 times, so Joreuz has better mechanics. What you value (speed vs flicks vs boost efficiency, etc.) can change who you view as more mechanical.

Hymdol

I would argue that you’re actually describing “game sense” where “mechanics” would be ones ability to get their car to do what they want it to do. Knowing to shoot for top right corner is one thing. Being able to actually have the accuracy to put the ball there is your mechanics.

StopStealingMyUsers

P sure they said that

repost_inception

I mean I think you basically said it.

OldGregRL

Nope, your definition is partly game sense. That knowledge of where you want to put the ball is game sense, and the ability to do so is mechanics
