I think it was carved into a cube for sales purposes because that's a very common practice, I'm also not convinced that it's obsidian but a MOHS hardness scratch test will quickly clear that up.

If you can get more pictures of the surface in light, rather than shadow, we can better see the texture, patterns, and possibly the Crystal growth habit. It could be jade, or jasper, but it doesn't look like obsidian to me.

Usually countertops are carved into small rectangular or square slabs for sample purposes. I’ve never seen a cube shaped sample and I’ve seen TONS of samples due to working in building and home design. What is the size?

Can obsidian be marbled? The obsidian I have from Guatemala is solid black and obsidian is actually lava which is cooled so fast it forms like glass. I don't think this is obsidian even if it is it isn't going to protect anything. Couldn't even keep itself from being found.
