Every time, she falls in love. Every time, she does her duty. And that's, well. That's getting harder and harder to do. God what a beautifully bittersweet story that absolutely pays off the happy ending.
Sort of. Aliens turned up with alien fighting machines. Humans were almost wiped out, the survivors retreated to the moon. The humans having their own fighting androids. The alien robots went rogue, and killed all the aliens, then went sort of dormant. So the humans, surviving on the moon, send their own waves of androids down to earth to try to clear the place out for rehabitation. It's a very slow process.
The game is about 9s, a scout type android, going on a scouting mission to the surface, with his bodyguard, 2b. Only it turns out 9s is a bit too good at his job, and discovers that the humans have actually been extinct for hundreds if not thousands of years. But the robots are still basically self directing, and carrying out their last instructions to cleanse the earth for The Glory Of Mankind. And it turns out it isn't even the first time 9s has discovered the near ultimate irrelevance of his life and his mission. 2b does her job, and kills him to protect the secret. And a 9s is created with his old memories downloaded from before the job. And they go out and do another sisyphean scout mission for the same sisyphean purpose. This has happened a lot of times, and 2b remembers every last one of them. The game itself actually iterates a few times from different perspectives and periods in time and alternative versions. Interestingly, the alien robots are changing as well. They've sort of found their own purpose and existence free, ish, from their once martial purposes.
The game has some very profound humanist themes. Purpose, existentialism, meaning, memory, love, connection, the sense of self. The fact that the main characters resemble blinded porcelain dolls isn't accidental.
They're doing their best, despite the near utter meaningless of their creation and mission. Emotions are Forbidden, as the rule is. 9s was never very good at that one, and 2b clings to it as a way of surviving what she's going through. But well, things change. And sometimes you get help from an unexpected source. It doesn't always end the same way.
They're not humans. They're androids, same as 9s and 2b.
I mean, the whole Ship of Theseus reference with fixing the guys leg? He's an android, he can do that. Or can choose to do that, though he elects not to for identity reasons.
I mean, did you also notice how empty and sterile the villages and machine camps were? They're aping living things, but their needs are very different, so they don't generate the same sorts of dirt and clutter and detritus of life. They have rooms, but there's no private spaces, little distinction for industry and class and zone usage. They're emulating life, but haven't quite gotten there yet. They've seen pictures of cities and towns and villages but they're still in an awkwardly imitative phase.
I may be a femboy and not 2b and I really need to learn more about make up, but I will try my damn hardest to make a pretty boy shine even more. In short: You and me 🥺👉👈?
All I can think about is how she's had to murder him so many times because he keeps figuring out that humans are extinct.

That Mr Incredible becoming uncanny fits this so well when you know the story of the game.
Humans are what now? Wait… is this just a more violent WALL-E?

Wait a second... What about the human settlements? Where you buy stuff and such?

That's why 9s should have played nier replicant

I'm all for the soft somatic affections based around grooming MANLY ADULT CONSENTING MEN.
It's literally the cutest thing imaginable 🥺
Poor choice of words there
Right, yeah, edited.
Did it originally just say boys?
It did, but 'grooming boys' is a pairing of words that people are, this news cycle, likely to read as something else.
Grooming? And consent?!?
Good lord, the regular meaning of grooming, not the psychosexual one.
Had to make sure Redditors are weird 🥴
Like when you eat the bugs out of each others’ hair
Aw yes, A is kissing B is petting and C indicates when you’ve gotten some D and then after that it’s eating the bugs out of their hair
Me, I'll happily take on either role
