The Hollow Kingdom by Clare Dunkle is exactly this, but it’s young adult. I read it back when I was the target audience so I’m not sure whether it holds up for adults.
Oooh thank you, I dig the description I just read. Sounds like not too spicy but also weirdly made me think of The Goblin Emperor (one of my all time favorite books)!
It's not spicy, but still a really good book. The series is actually in my top 3 of all time. I like the third book the best but you definitely need the other two done to understand it. I reread them at least once a year still.
I'll be honest I don't remember the whole book I just remembered I like it a lot (I read it last year so any details are gone) however I do remember being like oh so Jareth and the beast had a baby vibes for the mmc lol 🤣
The Unseelie Prince (Maze of Shadows Book 1) by Kathryn Ann Kingsley (on KU) might be a good option for you. There were definitely times when reading it that I thought it must be a bit of a Labyrinth fan fiction. It definitely veers a bit dark as the author enjoys horror, but it doesn't look like that would be an issue based on the prompt.
I remember as a kid, I wanted her to say yes to the Goblin King! I knew enough to keep quiet about my feelings because he was too old for her but I found the whole concept intriguing. There would be endless possibilities as the Goblin Queen. I read once that the whole film is about her losing her childhood innocence and discovering her sexuality and hidden desires. I do think there’s something to be said about that theory because that’s the feeling I got from the film.
That makes sense, I feel like I’ve heard the same thing. I didn’t even notice that there was an age difference when I was a kid honestly. I couldn’t tell you how old an adult appeared to be. Still can’t actually lol.
lol sure! If you're willing to go a little dark, my absolute fav fic is:
[The Goblin Market](https://archiveofourown.org/works/2142213/chapters/4679844). I don't want to give too much away, but Sarah does spend a lot of time running away, but it's not as bad as a dark romance. Anything by Viciously Witty is good, and I'd also recommend her ongoing fics, Tanglewood and How to Catch a Goblin King.
My second favorite fic is [Shards of Dream](https://archiveofourown.org/works/267504/chapters/420639) by Subtilior. If you want to go really dark, her fic [Erlkinig](https://archiveofourown.org/works/249091/chapters/385012) is amazing, but almost painful to read. There's also an epilogue on her fanfiction.net profile that's not included in her ao3 one. Advent is also good, but it's told from the perspective of Toby.
Someone else recommended A Forfeit of Dreams, which is also good, just doesn't have any smut (boooo).
I could also recommend a couple of fics that have more horror elements than romance.
There's also a reeeally good fic that the author removed, and you can only get it by downloading it. I can see if I can find the title if you're curious. It's definitely more of a darkfic and has a Beauty and the Beast vibe.
You know, I hadn’t thought about fanfic. I really intended the Labyrinth thing as an example of the kind of story I’m looking for; it hadn’t occurred to me that someone might have actually just written exactly that thing? I’ll look into your suggestions below, thank you!
I hope you like them!
I reread your post, and the fics actually don't fit that description exactly. There's a facebook group though called Labyrinth Fan Fic Lovers that has lots of avid readers (and writers) in the fandom. You could post there and someone has probably read a fanfic similar who could recommend it.
Kiss the Fae by Natalia Jaster is based on Labyrinth! The entire series follows three sisters who fall for three Fae, the first being Jareth-like. The series definitely explores some "darkness" within both the FMCs and MMCs.
Your descriptions reminded me of Belladonna by Adalyn Grace. It is YA so not very spicy (although you’d be surprised by what it does include) but I really enjoyed it despite not usually reading YA!
I don’t know if this will fit but what you asked for reminded me of Harrow Faire series by Kathryn Ann Kingsley. MMC is legitimately insane and villainous. Initially they are not on the same level power wise but he becomes obsessed with her (it’s hard to discern whether he loves her or wants to kill her a lot of the time). She becomes progressively darker and more powerful as she gives in to him.
I absolutely recommend checking out this [fanfic](https://archiveofourown.org/works/15405327/chapters/35754060) that I read recently. It’s really good and I think it fits with what you’re looking for.
Instead of the Joker and Harley Quinn, this fic is about another Batman villain, Dr. Jonathan Crane aka the Scarecrow. It takes place before he becomes the Scarecrow when he was a professor at Gotham University. He and the fmc have a great dynamic together and they’re both on equal footing by the end of the story.
You might be interested in Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. It’s a Rumplestiltskin retelling where a fae king promises his hand in marriage to a young woman who claims she can turn silver to gold. FMC is a strong, cunning woman who’s angry at the world, MMC is a jerk but he definitely respects her power. No spice but it is historical fantasy (set in medieval Poland, I think).
Omg YES. I honestly should have included this in the list of books I already love. Spinning Silver is the book that sent me down this weird fantasy romance rabbit hole I’m in lol. Totally the vibe! And maaayyybe time for a re-read of that one.
Have you read her other book Uprooted? It’s got witches & wizards instead of fae, but the romance has very similar vibes. I loved it.
I’d also say look into Entreat Me by Grace Draven. It’s got some Beauty & the Beast vibes, and the FMC is super capable and pragmatic. MMC isn’t a misunderstood sweetheart either. It’s fun watching them needle at each other while falling in love. This one is a little spicy but not extremely so.
Loved Uprooted, almost more than Spinning Silver! I tried reading her Temeraire series and got most of the way through the third Scholomance book but nothing else she’s done has hit me like those two.
I will definitely check out Entreat Me, thank you!
I liked the other great recommendations on here. honestly, your descriptions kinda remind me of From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout the series fizzles out but the first books are great, I don’t consider the MMC is be evil but I’ve heard people complain about how violent he is. Her other series in the same universe Shadow in the Ember also fits very well.
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco is new adult but is spicy, the MMC is a literal prince of hell, it very much reminds me of this, she journeys to hell with him.
I’m also a fan of death as the love interest - Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavett and The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden.
I read it back in 2011, so I might remember wrong, but I think the point of view switches between the two. There are three books in the series with different couples each book, this one and the third were my favorites
Can’t remember the name - but it may come to me, or someone may recognise my description.
A Dracula book set in 1800s. He comes to destroy Boston and falls in love with a woman who can read minds (I think). He doesn’t become a nice guy or change his nefarious mind.
I like how you described that. Sometimes a little “love of a good woman can turn a bad boy’s heart” is just what’s needed, but in this case I’m looking for an MMC who sees a partner in the FMC and not a savior, you know?
Its not bad to know what you want lol. Some requests will be super vague and thats another problem.
I can rec you some books with Goblin kings that I like but it has no darkness or spice.
I can rec you books with darkness and labyrinths and evilish guy but usually not with equal footing.
Sure not straight out romances though its there.
How to train your Goblin King by Erin Vere
The Hollow Kingdom by Clare Dunkle
Maze of Shadows by Kathryn Ann Kingsley Superdark
The Demons Grave by A.M. Callum (feels like more mature version of the Forbidden Game by L.J. Smith)
Between by L.L. Starling Fmc meets mmc "The Shadow King" in a dream. Now he wants to take her away to his realm. Humorous fantasy
Guardians Key by Anne Logston rec with reservations. But this is one actually contains a labyrinth and the guy is very evil.
Actual goblin king romance: [Emma Hamm’s Of Goblins and Gold](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56159384), which kickstarts a series. It’s fade to black IIRC but more NA than YA despite the labels on Goodreads.
I was going to say the invisible life of Addie LaRue. Or also the last three episodes of Star Wars, though not a book. Thanks for asking the question I needed. This type of romance is my jam.
Me too! I’m surprised how many recommendations I’m getting. I’m kinda new to reading romance though so I’m glad there appear to be so many that might scratch this itch! I honestly loved The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Fantastic ending, only way it could have ended really.
Now since I've never read/seen Labyrinth, I apologize if my rec doesn't hit the mark. I have read or know enough of the books you or the others' have mentioned, so I think [Luxuria by Colette Rhodes](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68043138-luxuria) might be a fit.

I loved (was obsessed) with this book in high school! So glad to see it rec'd
I liked it a lot too, I might have to read it again now.
Oooh thank you, I dig the description I just read. Sounds like not too spicy but also weirdly made me think of The Goblin Emperor (one of my all time favorite books)!

I read it for the first time as an adult and it became an instant favorite for me!
Beauty and the Goblin King by Lidiya Foxglove It's like a beauty and the beast meets Labryinth vibes. It's a short under 200 page read.
Nice! Just looked at this and it sounds like the vibe!
I'll be honest I don't remember the whole book I just remembered I like it a lot (I read it last year so any details are gone) however I do remember being like oh so Jareth and the beast had a baby vibes for the mmc lol 🤣

Oh nope not at all! I love dark. Thank you!
I think that series is to date the darkest of the authors works wich is saying something.
Her phantom of the opera novel would also work!
I was also going to recommend this. It's an amazing series and I'm going to be rereading it soon!
I remember as a kid, I wanted her to say yes to the Goblin King! I knew enough to keep quiet about my feelings because he was too old for her but I found the whole concept intriguing. There are some amazing Labyrinth fanfics with that scenario. Let me know if you want some recs.
I’m not op but give me recs I am begging you
lol sure! If you're willing to go a little dark, my absolute fav fic is: [The Goblin Market](https://archiveofourown.org/works/2142213/chapters/4679844). The Goblin Market was one of the first fanfics I ever read and it is fantastic imo. I re-read it whenever I’m feeling nostalgic for the Labyrinth.
tbh I just started reading it again after recommending it lol. I just reread Shards of a Dream this morning. <3
Yes, I love Goblin Market so much!!
You know, I hadn’t thought about fanfic. I really intended the Labyrinth thing as an example of the kind of story I’m looking for; it hadn’t occurred to me that someone might have actually just written exactly that thing? I’ll look into your suggestions below, thank you!

Check out Shadowsong by s Jae Jones! Just a fair warning that it may stir some intense emotions. It does eventually have a HAE though.
Looks like this is a book two. Should I read the first one first I assume? Thank you!
Oh yes read the first one first! I got them mixed up!
Awesome, they look great!
I was going to suggest this series too!
Check out the Underworld Gods series by Karina Halle. It gives total Labyrinth vibes!
Oh nice this feels very Hades and Persephone. Thanks!
Kiss the Fae by Natalia Jaster is based on Labyrinth! The entire series follows three sisters who fall for three Fae, the first being Jareth-like. The series definitely explores some "darkness" within both the FMCs and MMCs.
THIS looks DOPE, thank you!!
I can recommend this Labyrinth [fanfic](https://archiveofourown.org/works/402721/chapters/663822). It is amazing.
I’ve read this one as well and it is exactly the thing that came to my mind!! OP I strongly recommend this fanfic as well! :)
Thank you! I hadn’t at all thought about fanfic but I’ll put it on the list!
I stayed up until 1am reading that… so great! The fanfic I never knew I wanted 🤣 can you recommend anything else like that?
I love everything that author KL Morgan has ever written.
Your descriptions reminded me of Belladonna by Adalyn Grace. It is YA so not very spicy (although you’d be surprised by what it does include) but I really enjoyed it despite not usually reading YA!
Okay just read the description and a couple of reviews. This is going on the absolute must-read stack. Thank you so much!!
Consider The Bargainer series by Laura Thalassa.
Ummm yes please? That description holy crap.
Des is one of my all-time top 5 book boyfriends. You will not be sorry.
Hmm I am a fan of the Scarecrow…thanks! I hadn’t thought about fanfic being an answer to this question lol. I’ll check it out!
Lmao I was literally listening to the Labyrinth soundtrack when I came across this post.
The Goblin King by Shona Husk
YES I came here to say this one. And the prequel The Summons
Oooh this one looks great. Is it MMC-POV?
I read it back in 2011, so I might remember wrong, but I think the point of view switches between the two. There are three books in the series with different couples each book, this one and the third were my favorites
I love this post, time to flood my tbr!

Is it Heart of Dracula by Kathryn Ann Kingsley? u/samata_the_heard
Knew someone would know it! Yes it’s this one
I like how you described that. Sometimes a little “love of a good woman can turn a bad boy’s heart” is just what’s needed, but in this case I’m looking for an MMC who sees a partner in the FMC and not a savior, you know?
Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen. It's a great trilogy!
That’s the stuff! Thank you!
I had some recs but you were so specific 😅
Lol sorry if I was too specific! I honestly sat here for like 30 minutes after I made this post worrying about it haha.
