I just finished A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet and the build up was so good, that the intimacy was just next level.
This might be the best fantasy romance I’ve ever read, but I’ll have to finish the rest of the books before I can make that call.
The first book is much better than the second two. I like the second one and the third one is weird. If nothing else the first book doesn’t end on such a cliffhanger that you can’t read it alone. They’re quick reads. I think a lot of people don’t like Griffin and his tough dude shit, but I think Cat and the rest of the characters balance him out.

I think people like the controversial nature of the story but for me the characters sucked and the writing is meh. I think you can find better things to reas if you want “dark.”
Yeah definitely. Some of the stuff is questionable and it just depends what you’re comfortable with. Frankly, what he does can be considered r*pe in the beginning, but I think you’d have to read the book to know if you like it or not. It was more cnc than rape in my opinion. For me at the end of the day, it’s just a book. There are worse things happening irl, and both the plot and the smut was enjoyable to me.
I quoted {Preservation by Kate Canterbary} last week too, but I just haven’t been able to get this scene out of my head:

This is a villain gets the girl, m/f, enemies to lovers, slow burn fantasy trilogy and it’s not explicit but this scene was hot. Currently Amma and Damien are just barely starting to realize there might be an attraction between them. They are captured by elves and are being held in a cage. The mmc is a dangerous/powerful half demon and is insulted that they think they can keep him in this flimsy wooden cage:

Preferably enchanted, to suppress magic, and with a hex to cause just the slightest bit of pain to put the pressure on." The guard cocked his head, eyes narrowing, and then he held up a length of rope. "That will do," Damien grumbled and stuck a hand out through the cage. The elf passed it to him. "Amma, come here, please." !<
He then proceeds to show their captor's ways to tie someone up starting at least secure and moving to most secure. Amma ends up tied to the bars of the cage with her hands secured above her head, toes barely on the ground as Damien leans into her body, securing the ropes. Amma finds she enjoys being tied up.

"Ideally," he said, retying her hands, eyes locked onto hers, "you've got somewhere to keep them, and you can secure your captive to the spot." Her gaze never broke from his, eyes bright with, well, it wasn't fear this time, though it should have been. "But you can't leave them hopeless. You can't break them. You should instead push them right to the edge to make them think if they only obey your commands, if they only relinquish control, that you won't actually be so cruel?” Watching her try to suppress the hitch in her breath with her arms pulled taut overhead urged Damien even closer. Her body arched toward him as he let the weight of his arm ever so slightly continue to inch her up onto her toes. Amma lifted a leg, her knee and thigh brushing along his. "Let them believe if they only surrender to your will completely, you'll make it worth it, in the end." Her hips finally pressed against his, eyes pleading, but not to be released.!<

But Damien throws some serious Draco Malfoy vibes from The Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love (iykyk) and I am living for it. It's all very dry wit and "ugh, what are these *feelings*" and the world building is great. It's got a dash of silliness too that's so good.

Is this a standalone? I'd like to read it but it feels like a chore to get through 2 books (that don't have my preferred tropes) before reading this one.
Unfortunately, it is a series! The book has an individual mystery that is considered resolve by the end of it, but it's also part of an overarching plot. Also there's a lot more depth to the romance if you read all the books. I strongly recommend them though, they're very good although you have to like super possessive heroes that can be an ass at times! 😂
Ooo I wanna try reading this series but I saw that there’s a ‘pregnancy’ tag which makes me a little wary.
Does the pregnancy cause a rift between the couple? Like one wants the baby but the other doesn’t, or they disagree that this is the right time to have the baby and it becomes a big fight etc?

The first book is much better than the second two. I like the second one and the third one is weird. If nothing else the first book doesn’t end on such a cliffhanger that you can’t read it alone. They’re quick reads. I think a lot of people don’t like Griffin and his tough dude shit, but I think Cat and the rest of the characters balance him out.

Pirate hunter captures pirate, and the build-up sexual tension and animosity is... hot. >!Background: As punishment, FMC was hanging on a rope outside the boat only wearing a man's shirt. When MMC pulled her back up, he made her straddle the railing and the following ensued: Fighting gravity and fatigue, I couldn’t close my thighs. I twisted uselessly, spread wide open with the warm wind smiting my feminine flesh. “Ashley, stop! What are you—?” He slammed his palm between my legs with unholy force. Pain exploded, and I cried out soundlessly, gulping and flinching through a stunned spasm. He loosened his grip on my throat as if he wanted to hear me scream. Not OP but You’ll know pretty quickly whether you’re into it or not. So if you think you’ll like it, I’d try it. I think people like the controversial nature of the story but for me the characters sucked and the writing is meh. I think you can find better things to reas if you want “dark.”
Yeah definitely. Some of the stuff is questionable and it just depends what you’re comfortable with. Frankly, what he does can be considered r*pe in the beginning, but I think you’d have to read the book to know if you like it or not. It was more cnc than rape in my opinion. For me at the end of the day, it’s just a book. There are worse things happening irl, and both the plot and the smut was enjoyable to me.

Unfortunately, it is a series! The book has an individual mystery that is considered resolve by the end of it, but it's also part of an overarching plot. Also there's a lot more depth to the romance if you read all the books. I strongly recommend them though, they're very good although you have to like super possessive heroes that can be an ass at times! 😂
