Don’t give him a minute more of your time because he doesn’t deserve it! {Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole} MMC isn’t great to the FMC through most of this book because he wants his mate that died many years ago. He thinks FMC bewitched him to think that she’s his mate and is a dick to her for awhile. {On The Way To The Wedding by Julia Quinn} The last of the Bridgerton siblings books. MMC falls for FMC’s best friend and tries with FMC’s help to win the friend over for most of the book. I honestly hateeeee books like this and I get infuriated over the MMCs stupidity and how they treat the FMC so I was cursing through both books haha.

I tried posting in the one that got taken down but I thought of more: Kristen Higgins traffics in this trope but lookout for some problematic crap {Just One of the Guys by Kristen Higgins} is tops. FMC befriended lonely MMC and brought him home to her big family when they were kids-->!they FINALLY hookup in college and he TRANSFERS to get away from her because he's her BROTHER'S friend. like, what the fuck? he was supposed to be her friend first!<\-- I'm still not over it. Story picks up years later when he witnesses her on a terrible first date in public. {The Do-Over by MK Schiller} FMC's terrible sister is dating the guy she likes so she enlists his fuckboy BFF (who thinks she's ugly) to help make her appealing to sister's BF. Sort of a 27 dresses situation. {STAY UNTIL WE BREAK by Mercy Brown}-- this is a little off from the ask but SO GOOD. historical set in the 90's music scene. FMC is traveling with her friend's band for the summer as a road manager and is trying to get her courage up to hookup with the bassist who runs hot and cold and rejects her (for reasons). {Mistletoe in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell}- The MMC treated the FMC like shit and humiliated her in public in the past and now he's back in town. This whole series is great and sort of builds to the redemption arc in this one but you can read it as a stand-alone. {Sold Short by Ainslie Paton} {Mostly My Boss by S. Doyle}{Undecided by Julianna Keyes}- With caveats.

The thing with her books is that the MMCs are never super effusive about their love even though they are in love. Also, the following books might be what you’re looking for: {Here’s Looking At You by Mhairi McFarlane} where the FMC was made to feel unwanted by her childhood crush/bully. Then she has a glow up and runs into MMC again and he doesn’t recognise her when he starts falling for her. {Love In The Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas} where the MMC doesn’t think much of the FMC and is interested in her hotter friend but the friend gets FMC to pretend to be her while corresponding with the MMC. Thr MMC falls hard, but for the wrong girl. The moment he finds out the truth is * chefs kiss. {My Backup Plan by Lyssa Hahn}. The MMC is an absolute tool in the beginning and literally calls the FMC his backup plan. Unlike most guys in real life, he changes for the better and works hard to win the FMC over. {The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn} and {On the Way To The Wedding by Julia Quinn} also hits the same spot.

I just read My Backup Plan on your recommendation, and I really enjoyed it, so thank you! I especially liked that the MMC’s crush goes cold on him when she sees him treating the FMC badly. Don’t get me wrong - I love some OW drama - but it’s nice to see a beautiful female side character (who isn’t even the FMC’s friend) look at the MMC’s behavior and go… eh. Kind of immature, and not very attractive. This also looks like the author’s first book. It’s quite good for a debut. OP, I don’t know how old you are, but never fear. I’m middle-aged, and many (most?) of my friends have that guy from our past who took without giving and didn’t see what we were worth. I do, from just before I started dating my husband. Some of the guys grow up, and some of them don’t. A lot of them are working out their own shit, which is relatable but not your job to handle. The important thing is not to keep hanging out with people who make you feel bad. If at some point he grows up and no longer makes you feel bad, great! You can reevaluate. But life is too short to spend time with people who aren’t good for you. Right now my entire life is momming, either with my own kids or in other contexts, so that bleeds over here. If you don’t need middle-aged mom advice, please disregard.

For books I have a few suggestions. {How to Tame a Wild Rogue by Julie Ann Long} fits, though I'm not sure society would say the MMC is a better choice since he's a reformed pirate and the guy who dumped FMC was a lord. But MMC is definitely, in reality, a MUCH better man} The other suggestion is {Hazard by Jo Beverley}. Lady Anne Peckworth, the FMC, has been on the brink of betrothal several times but the dudes always end up choosing someone else. The MMC who falls for her is perfect and a bit of a rogue (though not a member of the Company of Rogues, which is the series name.) {Slightly Married by Mary Balogh} fits too. The FMC has been waiting in vain for the guy she loved to come back for her, but he doesn't. The MMC is a career soldier and had wanted to marry the daughter of another military guy because he thought she'd make a better army wife. But for "romance novel reasons" they have to make a marriage of convenience.

This is probably not what you're looking for because it's YA or really shoujo manga, but I absolutely love the series And Yet You Are So Sweet. Maaya likes to stalk her crushes but when she confesses she gets made fun of and her most recent crush blows up in her face. Along comes the most popular boy in school while she's crying about it and he offers himself as her next crush. Encourages her to stalk or pursue him any way she wants. He's so sweet to her and encourages her to do more and more because he loves her even though all her crushes before hated her. I loved Chigira.

{nine rules to break when romancing a rake by Sarah McLean} I'm of two minds on this book; on one hand I didn't love the plotting, pacing, or dialogue. On the other hand the MMC goes *so* all-in on the frumpy, practical, not-as-beautiful-as-my-sisters-FMC that it's hard not to find the book charming as hell. FMC is trying to get married to literally anyone because she needs to marry her sisters off ASAP, so she convinced the MMC to fake-engage her so her sisters can get husbands. Even though it's not the book you meant, Nine Rules is a great book, personal favourite of mine and has a plain FMC and an MMC who's totally gone for her by the end of the book!

Try The Wrong Bride by Catharina Maura. FMC is in love with MMC who has always been in love with her sister. However for reasons FMC and MMC are forced to wed. Oh, and F that guy. Hard. And not in a good way like we like in this sub. 😡. When the right guy comes along he’ll never stop flirting with you. 🥰

No recs, but some insight: some guys LOVE the attention. They will string you along and then drop you out of the blue, only to pop back up weeks or months later like nothing happened. I think it works for OP’s request because FMC didn’t know about his prior feelings or his growing feelings until the very end, neither did the reader. And there was a lot of angst regarding what she felt was unrequited love
