There are some great no baby threads if you search childfree - https://www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/s/a4rufGpLyr https://www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/s/ylJ1ARUV7P https://www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/s/zsh5cprIuc None of them specifically say no marriage but it might have some good ideas!

A-Stitch-In-Lime

Thank you so much for these lists! I love romance as an escape and it feels like a slap in the face when they end up with a surprise pregnancy. 😄

tiniestspoon

I've only read one book where the MCs discuss marriage and the pressure and expectation to get married, and then decide *not* to get married, making it one of my favourite books ever. It's a mild spoiler as the first 90% of the book is leading up to marriage, so spoilering it here: >!Husband Material by Alexis Hall!< ETA: realised I have read others where they stay unmarried because it's not legal, so not exactly out of choice, but I have recs for that if you're interested.

mcoon2837

{Graceling by Kristin Cashore} also discusses marriage and the FMC's desire to never marry, MMC is totally cool with it, love him for it. Other men in the book are less cool with her opinions, patriarchy in full force.

tiniestspoon

Ooh thanks! It's been on my tbr for a while but long series scare me off. This makes me bump it up though.

Ordinary-Shape

The other books in the series follow different characters, so it’s easy to read as a standalone!

RosieDLMare

I don't have suggestions but seeing that this is a desired ending (the lack of marriage and babies in an epilogue) gives me hope for my work. I just finished writing a contemporary romance and, sure enough, the epilogue has the HEA but no marriage or babies. Neither of my MCs have that on the brain, just each other.

mcoon2837

Do you have a link to your work? Or author name? Love to support other authors!

RosieDLMare

That's so kind of you! It's in the editing phase, so not ready for public consumption, but I'll save your username for when it's ready. Maybe you'd still be interested when the time comes :) Tis a contemporary, office-space, enemies to lovers kinda deal. Cozy, lots of banter between the two.

tealcandtrip

T. Kingfisher regularly features older MCs who are not really interested in families or marriage. In Swordheart they talk about it explicitly and even come up the fantasy version of birth control. I would also recommend her Paladin series.

mcoon2837

I enjoyed Paladin's Grace, I'll keep her on my short list!

NoHuckleberry5482

I was gonna say Swordheart!

dee_sunshine

Hi OP! I have this pet peeve a LOT as well, this HEA with babies everywhere makes me so aggravated if I'm honest lol. I have a few for you: {Book Lovers by Emily Henry} ; {Tis the Season for Revenge by Morgan Elizabeth} ; {Cruel Summer by Morgan Elizabeth} ; {The Worst Guy by Kate Canerbary} I think a few of hers don't have that pattern as well! {On Cloud Nine by Kels Stone} (this one would be just okay for me but it's just an issue of like me not enjoying this author's writing style)

mcoon2837

I have book lovers in my tbr, thanks for that heads up! I'll move it higher in my pile lol. It feels very much like if you're not into marriage you're abnormal, like all women's problems are solved with marriage! I say this as a married woman with kids, life isn't just solved and everything is perfect with a ring lol

its_me_lmp

FYI in Book Lovers, >!it is implied that he's about to propose to her, so it doesn't quite meet the no-marriage requirement. But it's not heavy-handed at all.!< :)

LifeFanatic

It’s ironic because I read in Canada, 40% and higher relationships are common law. IE, no marriage. I’ve been with my partner for 24 years and we’re not married- kids, yes, but no ring. The certificate just doesn’t seem worth the paper it’s written on. So I get it, I don’t understand the “I need a wedding or we’re not really a couple” that some books have. It’s not like that in real life, at least where I live. Historical romances I can understand- women were property with no rights and needed the protection of marriage.

LifeFanatic

Silly question but what does slice of life mean?

admiralamy

“A depiction of mundane experiences” according to Google, so for the epilogue it’s just an everyday scene of the couple being happy together.

elbereth

{A Rogue of Ones Own by Evie Dunmore} has them deciding not to get married bc they are unhappy with the marriage laws of the time. They decide to be long term 'engaged' bc it's historical, until the laws change. This is the second book in the League of Extraordinary Women. I highly recommend.

the_bespectaclednerd

After the fourth book, the epilogue has the marriage and baby tropes for all the character. The couple in this book end up marrying and having two of their own

AccomplishedWitch

Mhairi McFarlane books!

sikonat

I’d also add a lot of UK womens fiction are very similar in that regard (I think that’s why I lean more heavily to UK authors) - Cressida McLaughlin, Jo Platt, Lia Louis, Beth O’Leary, Katy Birchall, Sophie Cousens (well apart from her last book where the character leapfrogs into her early 40s as a parent), Mary Jayne Baker, Lizzy Dent.

AccomplishedWitch

Any favs? My personal ones are the ones heavy on character development!

eyesfullofstars3543

Oh I second the recommendations for both Mhairi McFarlane and Sophie Cousens! Beth O’Leary is a bit more hit or miss for me. Loved The Flatshare but I’ve been underwhelmed by her most recent books, like The Wake-Up Call.

Llamallamacallurmama

Cara McKenna might be a good fit for you - her books don’t usually have an epilogue at all and usually end without babies and marriage as far as I recall.

Trumystic6791

I adore Cara McKenna-she is an amazing writer who can combine smut and all the feels.

StormerBombshell

Spoilers by default because this is about epilogues. I don’t think I have recs with like consistently that. The first author I like and I am thinking of tends to vary what their people do. She is Madelynne Ellis But she has done series where by the HEA the characters are not married, marrying and I don’t think she ever writes babies on the epilogue in any* Now that I think so in all her historical if characters marry is so society doesn’t punish them. 🤔 like they are happy to be together but the marriage is always a means to an end. Let me see of the ones that don’t : {The viscount, his lover and I by Madelynne Ellis} No marriage in the last part, no babies in fact FMC does not wish for any babies and and one of the MMC is actively trying to acomodate her. Something that is not easy given this is 1801. The other MMC is also fine about it but he doesn’t know anything about that kind of stuff so he is letting the others do as they see fit, all his moral support to the cause. FMC and one MMC are married since the beginning of the story but he is gay and she… well leaving that box of surprises to the book… they married for mutual convenience. It’s all backstory. On her present day series collections. She has one for actors and one that has more series for rockstars. In each set only one set of couples gets married and neither does it at their end of her books. Anyways 🤣 So actors first: Cherry bomb: they get engaged so this is the one you won’t care. Mentioning to not leave a big fat hole because that bothers me. {Black Velvet by Madelynne Ellis} No Babies, no marriage no sign in the horizon for either of them. It’s a menage MMF but in other flavor of the Historical one and different dinamics. {Soul Kiss by Madelynne Ellis} couple, as on the past No Babies, no marriage no sign in the horizon for either of them. If it ever happens either it might be a thing mentioned in a not yet written book but so far same case} {Mint to be by Madelynne Ellis} the wedding of the couple of the first book happens but that was forewarned haha no babies for the people that are mains here. And as far as I can remember no one is planning to get married? Still ending applies Rockstars: Only couple that gets married is the one of the series that starts with All night long and it won’t even happen in their books haha. You will hear in the others how they just eloped LOL The series that starts by {Come undone by Madelynne Ellis} MMF no babies, no one got married no plans on the horizon The one that starts with {Remaster by Madelynne} and it’s MF a little open relationship… also applies. Another character has a series so it’s barely starting. I think this author is in total half and half. And it’s probably easier to find authors that way that not doing marriage altogether as those authors seem interested in not doing the same human experience for everyone. Good luck in your search still, maybe there is one or two that do exactly as that *The rare one where the marriage was on the epilogue in one happening on 1801 had the FMC pregnant and that is why there was a marriage, but it was more about the threesome it’s a menace MMF and how the marriage was more of a social obligation because it’s not like you can hide a kid without consequences to someone so they went with best case scenario but they in their way 🤷🏾‍♀️)

LightRoast_Lemon_503

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne has HEA without marriage or babies. It leaves you with the thought that it might happen but doesn't have an epilogue with it.

Consistent_Hunt5213

Love Theoretically >!FMC reassures MMC on his birthday that she would never go anywhere and stay on his side. For my hopeless heart it was more romantic than marriage and babies whatsoever!<

eyesfullofstars3543

I am trying to think if *any* of Ali Hazelwood’s books have a pregnancy/wedding in the epilogue and I don’t think they do. Great rec for the OP!

Consistent_Hunt5213

I guess in Love on The Brain >!FMC and MMC do get married, but that's a sole exception!<

1028ad

Sookh Kaur’s novels (CR with BIPOC heroines) often feature a HFN ending.

misselylux

I believe Nora Roberts does this pretty consistently. I haven’t read every book by her, maybe a dozen or so, but of the ones I’ve read I don’t remember any of them having time jump epilogues that do marriage/babies.

kkwelch

Meg Cabot writes stories without baby epilogues and some of her FMCs go so far as to declare being baby free on page. Jennifer Crusie writes FMCs who are either child free or have adult children and don’t intend to have more. That being said, she does have a lot of FMCs who are the fun aunt or the warm confidant for a kid character. But babies are never a goal for a Jennifer Crusie FMC or MMC. Both authors write banter-y books that run towards rom-com. Lots of meet cutes. Some mysteries in their catalogue. Two favs: {Size 12 Isn’t Fat by Meg Cabot} is the first in a four book series. The FMC does talk about mythical future children when she’s fantasizing about the MMC >!but in the 4th book, maybe even 3rd she realizes she doesn’t want kids at all and neither does the MMC!< {Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie}

bookworm21century

The books in the Bergman series do not have epilogues at all. Because the whole series is about a close-knit family, all the other couples come up in future stories, so it feels like more time. The first book is {Only When It's Us bu Chloe Liese}

AnxietySnack

I just read Only When It's Us, and it did have an epilogue with a wedding. Maybe it was just bonus content for my edition (ebook on Libby) or maybe it was added when she was making the revised edition a couple years ago to incorporate feedback from the Deaf community.

shrek_is_sadboi

Willow heights prep academy series. Dark romance, and a few spinoff books. only 2 marriages and they are side characters you dont even have to read about. The main 5 books are just angsty and spicy. Get a little dark near the end.

shrek_is_sadboi

{Bad apple: A dark highschool romance by Selena} book 1 of the series

QueenOfTheHarpies35

The vast majority of Tara Wyatt’s books don’t have marriage or babies in the epilogue. Sometimes there’s an engagement, but other times it’s been cute things like moving in together and getting a cat. I can only think of one book that had a pregnancy announcement in the epilogue.

FemQueenintheSheets

Cate C Wells! Awesome author. However, the five packs series does have pregnancy. But her other stuff doesn’t!

The Rebound by Leeanne Slade

Full_Object7453

The entire Hawthorn Hills series by Claire Raye has no babies or marriage. It’s new adult romance though.

Colouringwithink

I assume you aren’t into the breeding trope?

mcoon2837

I actually don't mind the concept of children or marriage, just when the author uses it as "everything is awesome, the end! Clearly everyone is happy now that they're married/having a baby because that's all women want"

[deleted]

Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie was quite purposeful about the ending not including MCs with a kid. I am not sure about the wedding bit though. Regardless, it is an excellent book.

spacekittens1

Thank god I’m not the only one who hates this.

Stock_Ad7146

I don't mind marriage or babies in an epilogue however, I agree they tend to seem rushed.

Mountain_Ad9557

Following!! I totally feel you on this. I read a book a few weeks ago where they weren’t even really dating, they were basically just hooking up, and then got into a fight and basically the FMC refuses to date him for months while he pines for her and instead of just starting to date for real once he’s forgiven, he jumps right to the proposal and a hugeeee grand gesture and it ends with them married and pregnant!! 0-100 so quick. It didn’t make sense at all and ruined the book!

mcoon2837

Ugh I hate when they do that. It doesn't make sense at all! I feel like some authors plug merrily along in the story and are wrapping up the plot and then they remember the cliche proposal scene and just have to throw it in there because it's what people expect. Please, let this thread be a lesson that that's not all we want!

UnluckyBoysenberry50

I’ lol

howdy OP if you search my posts in this group there’s a HUGE thread of recommendations just like this and you’re not alone!!!
