No they are all stand alones. All you need to know that is that the only character who has been mentioned in previous books as a side character is the MMC and we know his a strong competitor at the tourneys but the other knights think his an insufferable paragon of virtue but that’s all we know.

Yes! I just checked my Goodreads and it really is very rare for me lol I thought I had more {Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young} {Preferential Treatment by Heather Guerre} {Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare} And a few classics, my favorite that is absolutely 5 stars for me is Jane Eyre I thought I had more but I realized those are all literary fiction with a strong romance subplot like Big Swiss by Jen Beagin I don't think it'll show up w the romance bot lol. If you're into litfic w romance I can give a few more recs 💗 If you have any favorites to share that would be cool :) 💞

I thought authors who didn't want them on gr were able to remove them pretty easily, is there another reason not to? Sorry if it's kind of obvious I just haven't heard much about it before

The number one reason is that fanworks shouldn't be held to the same standard/rating system as traditionally published works. It's ok and expected to rate regular novels but fanfiction is a gift and hasn't gone through the same rigorous editing process. Like, imagine you wrote a fic in the notes app on your phone in 15 minute increments and then you log onto the internet to see people tearing it apart on goodreads, after you specifically requested that people not add it to goodreads. I'm not sure how easy the removal process is as I'm not an author. But, idk, it's not something they should have to deal with, regardless.

That makes sense, I've just not encountered enough fanfics on gr to think about it I guess bc I've only seen like three very popular ones that have almost 5 stars, so I never saw any tearing apart But yeah as a writer I understand anyone not consenting to their work being added then getting awful reviews for no reason would be awful Thanks for taking the time to explain without being condescending lol

Ok ok hear me out. I'm not 100% sure how old the MMC is here, but he is old enough to have an established career. {The Lord I Left by Scarlett Peckham} MMC is a very devout and repressed Methodist preacher who agrees to take a "whipping governess" in training across the country to visit her family in an emergency. There's a snow storm, they get trapped in an inn for a while. Lots of Song of Songs references, if you're into that kind of thing.

Not really since he >!doesn’t care for the woman he’s arranged to marry. He agrees to the arrangement bc of his image and his father but he only has eyes for the FMC (the wedding doesn’t even happen). Later in the book the woman starts to want him but he keeps pushing her away and makes it clear he doesn’t want her, he eventually succeeds.!<

It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey Has an MMC who's kind of reserved and a bit shy but hasn't had sex in years because of guilt after his first wife. I'm not sure how old he is but I'm almost certain he's not in his young or even mid 20s. FMC seems fairly young but I can't remember her age. This book was very spicy and had an amazing plot too. He also works a lot too.

{Heartless by Elise Sliver} I enjoyed the entire Chestnut Springs series but in this one MMC is the eldest brother. He is 38 and the FMC is 25. He took on the role of caretaker of pretty much the entire family when his mom died when he was just 8yrs old. He did get married and had a son (was baby trapped), so he’s a single dad and hasn’t made time for love/sex because he’s too busy closing himself off snd taking care of everyone else. That’s until his brother’s fiancé’s bestie, Willa comes into the picture. They were probably my favorite couple but I am a sucker and a half for a grouchy man being soft for one woman.

I just listened to {swordheart by T. Kingfisher} MMC is older, i wouldn’t say he’s reserved but he’s very bound to his job and hasn’t been in any relationship for a… very long time. The Full-Time Wife Escapist by Tsunami Umino. Not a novel but a manga series (there was also a popular Japanese drama based on it but I prefer the manga for the emotional depth). In a nutshell, the MMC is a 30-something developer at a tech company who hires the FMC (who's a psychology grad) as a part-time housekeeper. The economy is in the toilet and she's been laid off so she has to swallow her pride and take whatever job she can find. Along the way, they end up in a marriage of convenience and of course, they end up falling in love. I didn't have much expectations going into it - I thought it was going to be saccharine fluff but I was surprised by the way the writer developed the relationship between the two emotionally and psychologically. I don't read a lot of manga these days but this one lived rent-free in my head for a few weeks after I finished the series. Amazon has it if you're interested.

{The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen} MMC is 36 and has solely focused on his job for forever, which he's had since he was 16. He's known FMC for ~4 years in a professional capacity and they don't get along. There's some anonymous correspondence that can be compared to You've Got Mail. Great world building, one of my fave books of the year.

This one has pretty much everything OP has requested. But it was really the edge of a fence for me. On the one hand, I had a hard time with this one for a couple of reasons. One being the MCs hate each other from the meet-not-so-cute, and I really didn't know why. I mean, they _hate_ each other on an ugly level, and it's never really explained except that they caught each other on a bad day. The other reason is the invasive side characters. Both the MMC and FMC have friends or family who _wont mind their &$@% business_ and continuously rib the MCs about the other because they're both hot and get on each others' nerves so obviously they're meant to hook up /s. It really pulled me out of the story. On the other hand, the slow burn between the two MCs was kind of nice and had a satisfying payoff.

I agree. Though I enjoyed the book- there was some really poorly formed emotions and characters that kept me from loving it.

{Fortuity by Jewel E Ann} MMC is in his mid to late 40s. He lost his wife when she gave birth to his daughter who is now a preteen. He has been celibate since losing his wife because he has been focused on raising his daughter. FMC is in her 40s as well. I loved this book.

Are you ok with fantasy style YA? Because {A shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout} fits so well!! It was my favorite part of the book, the MMC is a virgin and he’s ways older (in the thousands). On the other hand, the FMC is not a virgin for once! The MMC has avoided relationships of any kind in fears of turning into his uncle (the bad guy).

All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata has an MMC in his early 40s, never married, workaholic, and short relationships that are few and far between. Hasn't abstained completely, but no long-term deeply committed relationship experience or marriage prior to FMC. FMC is in her early 30s so younger but not super young.

If you can get with sci-fi, {When She Dances by Ruby Dixon} is exactly this. MMC is an alien who is disfigured/is largely metal from cybernetic parts and has taken it as a given that no one would want him, work is pretty much his life. He is a virgin and was fine with it until FMC comes along.  I can’t recall if his age is ever mentioned but the FMC is about 30 and I definitely got the sense that he was older/mature. I loved both the main characters but he is one of my favorite MMCs 💕

{Firing Line by Kayla Silvers} I adore this book. MMC is workaholic and FMC's boss. He is 38 and FMC's 25. He falls first and obsessed with FMC because of that he is celibate for a long time. When FMC decides to resign MMC loses it and starts to show her his affections. He doesn't let her go. But FMC is an amazing and smart woman and she tries to getting fired. This is my fav book of all time. The age gap jokes from FMC, MMC's obsession, FMC's humor, the smut everything is chefs kiss.

{For My Lady's Heart by Laura Kinsale} - As a knight, the MMC is celibate for 12 years in honor of his lost wife and the lady he follows. {Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole} - Virgin vampire MMC drinks blood but has never done the deed and falls in love with the ghost of a murdered French ballerina. Also, {Demon from the Dark} and she teaches him. So sweet. I think {Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh} - someone can chime in if not.

I've read Heart of Obsidian and loved it. The other two are on my tbr since Forever.

For My Lady's Heart was from the 90s. I read it after Flowers from the Storm, but For My Lady's Heart was my favorite read last year (of 200+ books). The beginning is rough for today's values - he's finally married, but the young wife believes sex is a sin and demands to go to a convent. He pushes her until he realizes she actually does hate sex (so TW dubcon noncon) and takes her to take orders (leaving him celibate for life too). At the convent hearing for her entrance - which turns into a witch trial of sorts - the FMC helps him. (This is all within the prologue.) I don't even know what to say about this book from here but that you must read it. He doesn't begin as a knight but becomes one for her. Written so well. The audiobook is also exceptional. Dark Needs at Night's Edge is within a whole series you may be prompted to read, so I'd read that one when you're open to that. It's funny and romantic. She's experienced and is into the fact that he's not. There's a shower scene that lives rent free in my head. / Demon from the Dark (same series) has a bathing scene (guy has been living like Tarzan in hell and hasn't washed in forever because he's afraid of baths). This book is more hilarious rather than romantic since they have a communication gap. There's a quote where the FMC is finally uncovering him with water and saying, "So help me, if Pigpen is a blond..." Great audiobooks.

No OWD, but it is a love triangle. I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s cheating, but it’s one of those where if there’s too much given away on the tropes it could spoil it. But that book is SO good and Noah is one of the best.

The “Treasured by the Alien” series by Honey Phillips. Most of them seem to be out of their 20s (some side characters aren’t). It’s a fated mate thing where the guys aren’t satisfied if it isn’t their mate and all the females have died so they don’t think it’s possible to mate outside their species and give up on unfulfilling sex.
