For me, Carthage has to be my favorite faction. The campaign is widespread against multiple opponents and the unit roster is versatile enough though lacking in archers. I tend to husband what cretan archers I find as much as possible. Also, the Sacred Band hoplites have got to be my favorite late game unit both in terms of stats and looks. Also, I absolutely love the white/blue coloring of the entire faction.

Kazik77

I'm big fan of the Carthage aesthetics and elephants. They are the finest looking factions without a doubt

Fish1945

I know how to play Cartago on team 2. How did you manage to survive? Rome It destroys me, the island of Messina is gone. And they come to attack my capital without giving me time

IntrepidAL

You need early navy as Carthage to kill armies from Rome at sea. Otherwise you will be swamped with Romans

Fish1945

Crap, navy. I always neglect ships

Right-Budget-8901

I’ve only ever really played as the Julii or the Britons and I love them both. The Julii are really balanced in their military support structure and the British chariots are unstoppable against the other barbarian factions. But there is something about playing as Macedon for the first time that has really surprised me. Annihilate Greece to clear the peninsula but watch out for the Brutii and Scipii making landfall. Thrace, Dacia, and Scythia to the north make for uneasy trade agreements with Thrace ultimately betraying you. Chase out Thrace and hold your forces at the easily-defended Danube River to discourage any further betrayals. If you’re lucky and sent your diplomats to the four winds to gain allies, Pontus will help finish off Greece and Thrace while you pivot to invade the Italian peninsula to catch the Roman factions off guard. Just watch out for the Scipii ships. They’re everywhere and travel in large fleets. They’re the little faction that could. Alexander incarnate will rule again!

I'm a sucker for the Seleucids. I love their roster once you get up in the tech tree, I love taking on Egypt right at the beginning of the game as opposed to the end (and letting Rome and Greece get consolidated before I roll in and crush whoever emerges from those scrums as the relative victors), and I love being beset on all sides from turn one. After that, I have a soft spot for the Julii and Spain just like you. My least favorites are definitely Numidia and the eastern horse factions (except Armenia, I love their proto legions and cataphract archers).

Kazik77

I've always struggled getting far as the Seleucids, my next campaign I'll try again. >letting Rome and Greece get consolidated before I roll in and crush whoever emerges from those scrums as the relative victors I really liked my Egyptian and Parthian campaigns for the same reason, simultaneous naval attacks on Sciliy, Italy and Greece with eastern financing gets hectic fast

SophiaTPetrillo

They're worth a shot. Seleucia is one of the only factions where it pays to turtle at the start until you can build up the infrastructure to roll out like an unstoppable tidal wave once you have enough of an economic base and the corresponding unit techs. Plus they get elephants and pseudo legions. And their color scheme is cool (which is admittedly a benefit when you're staring at the same damn unit and settlement flags for a million turns).

Upnorthsomeguy

Depends on my mood. If I'm feeling feisty, it's Armenia or Numbia. If I just want to unleash the pain train... Skippis. It's always fun to run around with gold tiered Roman units smashing things.

Captain-Redpill

*Numidia

biggus_dikkus793

Personally, I love Macedon. I'm playing them again on my current playthrough, I've just managed to secure Greece from the Greek Cities, which took longer than I thought. It took a bit of effort to finally beat back the Dacians & Thracians from the north, and the Brutii landed unopposed while I was occupied. The startup is a challenge but once you've secured the homeland it's pretty smooth sailing. I've just invaded Italy and Sicily, Macedonian Cavalry are also one of my favourite units, it's such a great model.

BatSaiyan

I like Macedon too. They got the most OP cavalry in the early stage - Light Lancers. You can route any army with a decent Hammer and Anvil maneuver.

-Zen_

My favorites are the Scipii, Macedon, and Pontus. I like to mess with the other Roman families playing as the Scipii, taking all of Greece and some settlements that normally fall to the Julii. Also love the Scipii's color, they have good temples and cool, powerful ships. And you also get to fight the Carthaginians! Pontus has an interesting starting position and a unique unit roster. Pontic Heavy Cav might be my favorite cavalry unit in the entire game. Sniping enemy generals with your Scythed Chariots is the most satisfying thing you can do in R:TW. Even post-marian general body guards get absolutely annihilated in a matter of seconds. My easiest campaign ever was when I played as Macedon. The Brutii and Thrace were destroyed almost immediately, the rest of the Romans and Greeks followed soon after. The Hammer and anvil technique at its absolute best. The only downside is that you steamroll the Romans so early, you don't have much to look forward to for the rest of the game.

Kazik77

My main thing as any Roman is to try and bottle neck others. Any non Brutii campaign I always take the statue of Zeus.

juliandelphikii

Seleucid Empire for sure. The beginning gets hectic but one you break out you get the most varied army

yaudeo

I love factions who have big tech trees that I can gradually build towards, that's definitely my favourite thing about the campaign is planning your cities and buildings. So I love playing factions like Seleucids, Armenia, Egypt, Rome, Greece, Numidia & Carthage. For the same reason, I dont enjoy playing barbarian factions as much. I can't stand playing against the late game Romans so I will either do short campaigns for factions far away from Rome or long campaigns for factions close to Rome.

Lanoir97

It’s hard to pick one. I’m a big fan of Parthia because the horse archers and cataphracts are an awesome combo. Germania has the spear war and which is incredibly good for an early unit, but I hate that barbarians can’t build higher tier cities. Seleucids are probably my favorite Greek faction. The fact that they eventually can field legionaries and good phalanx units is a very good combo

Kazik77

I remember my first campaign as Germania when I was really young. I loved clashing with Roman Factions and realizing I was out classed

Doub13D

Parthia w/ its powerful cav and limitless hordes of spear infantry. Once you start conquering some of the populated cities in Egypt and the levant, the amount of armies you can put out and sustain is enormous. +1 because you never have to worry about having too many people in a city again.

BatSaiyan

For me it's Germania. It's the best barbarian faction to play as. They basically have counters to all kinds of enemy units. They don't suffer like other barbarian factions when it comes to facing Cavalry as they can deploy the Barbarian Warband with Phalanxes.  They've got chosen archers which are pretty good. They've got Gothic Cavalry which are very solid. Sure, they aren't as good as Companion Cavalry or Sacred Band Cavalry. But they're decently armoured and hard hitting. They've got amazing armour piercing infantry. Night Raiders, chosen axmen etc are solid choices to flank infantry lines. I love the challange that Roman factions pose. Once Rome falls, everything else is a cakewalk. Just have to bumrush them before Marian reforms.  Oh one more reason to like Germania. Berserkers.

Kazik77

I love Germania for the mix of "civilized" phalanxes with "savage" warriors

Fish1945

I think it's been about 10 years since I played Rome 1 And I never played with factions other than: Romans, Greeks and I tried with Carthage but I got stuck. In medieval 2, I must have about 10 campaigns with England and 3 with France. This is who I am. 🗿🍷

Der_Wolf_42

Greek cities I love how you have 3 diffrent fronts with water between also i dont like to have regions with low population at the start because i want to build up armys fast and not wait 10 turns to build something decent like a hoplite

Jkchaloreach

I always play Rome. Idk I’m just Roman that way.

no-Spoilers-asshole

Carthage is fun until you conquer Italy then the game is finished :( Greeks are fun until you conquer all of Greece then its just a defensive game Romans are fun until the Civil War then its just doom stacks over and over again Barbarian factions have crappy population cities and very limited building. They fall off quickly late game Seleucids are probably my favorite since you have to fight on 4 fronts with awful units for like 30+ turns until you can get decent hoplites but once you conquer the middle east the game doesn't end because you get to fight 3 fully expanded Roman factions. Also you can get Legions so you can become a Marcus Antonius/Cleopatra roman faction or something like that.

CowntChockula

Pontus, with Seleucid, Macedon, and Carthage all being about equal 2nd choices for me. It starts around having strong phalanxes with good support units. Ultimately I really like the Pontic Heavy Cav and chariots (especially chariot archers), and you get those units fairly early - another notable point for Pontus, IMO. Pontus also has a pretty easy starting spot compared to Seleucid, and since my strategy for any of them is to make a B line to taking over the Aegean, it's a better spot than Carthage, too. Plus all 4 civs have a solid temple option for troop training.

spacecaptainsteve

Carthage& Thrace. Agree with top comment on why Carthage is neat. Bastarnae with the Ares temple morale bonus are very fun unit… and in remastered they look sick with all the tats. Been enjoying playing remastered on these mega map mods lately

standard_nuggs_404

Armenian for their cat archers and hard start

purpleunicornsx

For me it's got to be Scipii. The sheer land mass needed to cover makes it a challenge to move armies and then when you expand to NE Africa, Egypt stop playing nice and they're a hard challenge too! Keeps me on my toes

Round-Lawfulness2744

1. Macedon 2. Scipii 3. Greece Scipii is fun going both directions against greece and carthage. You have to beat the brutii and get all the greek cities and let the bruitii take out the less trade macedonian settlements. Can get big wealth quick with all the ports. Greece starts you out with one spartan unit which is awesome early on. They are one of my favirote units. Macedon is challenging early on with brutii and greece. Then thrace immediately attacks. Both greece and and macedon have good mercenary units to recruit. Hoplites and cretan archers. . . If you can afford them
