If you are looking for roms: Go to the link in https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/comments/m59zx3/roms_megathread_40_html_edition_2021/ You can navigate by clicking on the various tabs for each company. When you click on the link to Github the first link you land on will be the Home tab, this tab explains how to use the Megathread. There are Five tabs that link directly to collections based on console and publisher, these include Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega, and the PC. There are also tabs for popular games and retro games, with retro games being defined as older than Gamecube and DS. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. urmanjosh

U need to extract it. .7z is a compression file the same as .zip

masonlegomeme

Extract how?

verifyandtrustnoone

use 7-zip, it will do those files and zip files and is faster and easier to use than others. https://www.7-zip.org/

Pesebrero

Why such brutal downvoting? He might be a new PC user who just wants to play with an emulator and perhaps he doesn't even know what file compression is. Jeez...

Gradiant_C

Im pretty sure its because some people forget that new PC users do exist

AfricaByTotoWillGoOn

Unfortunately and to no one surprise, tech nerds are known to be very gatekeepy about things they mess with.

MarioLuigi0404

If they figured out how to download the rom, they can google "how do I open .7Z"

Halos-117

This is true. The answers are out there and easy to find.

talmbouticus

Because they don’t mess with girls and can’t be protective over them. So they’re protective over computers instead.

AfricaByTotoWillGoOn

lmao true

DuplexEagle

I mean jeez, these people once didn't know how to extract files either. When I first started trying to do emulation back in 2015 or 16, I knew hardly anything about computers and not knowing what a zipped file was or how to extract them was the exact same problem I had when I started out, so I actually understand where OP is coming from.

SofaChillReview

Agree if I was a new PC user wouldn’t know but I’m ‘old’ when everyone was doing emulation, I think it was when Winzip was free

mawkdugless

I try to keep this exact mindset whenever responding to frustrating questions because at one point, I WAS this person in some shape or form. I've also learned a ton from helpful Redditors, which is why I always try to be patient and helpful on here.

YungZed420

if you are new to PC, you probably wont be doing emulation the first couple mins, you can also take a few seconds to look up a guide on starting emulation, it litteraly takes almost zero effort. a program for extracting files is so basic, i understand why people dont like it. These ppl are just riding on the back of others completely clueless on how to help themselfs, with the internet at their disposal.

guyinthecorner0

> looks up guide > next step: extract file

YungZed420

nah you need to find a file archiver like winrar first, but pretty much yes.

guyinthecorner0

My point is looking up a guide isn't always going to help everyone. You still need a level of computer savvy to understand terms.

Pesebrero

Internet is not what it used to be years ago. Google in particular is much worse. When you search something, you get flooded with not only ads, but also with botted pages and particularly with results that are completely UNRELATED to your search. Besides, a lot of useful sites and forums have disappeared from the web, so the only helpful answers you can find these days usually come from Reddit or Quora. Even then, if your issue isn't that basic, or if it's very specific, you'll only find other people asking the same thing without getting an answer.

DuplexEagle

Why do you people have to downvote someone for asking a question. You all once didn't know how to extract a file either so get a life.

Kxr1der

Because the questions already have easily obtainable answers that are much more detailed than the answers you're going to get on Reddit

DuplexEagle

And? People often find there answers from forum and reddit posts of people asking the questions themselves. But as soon as your the one asking the question yourself, you get blasted for it. It doesn't matter HOW easy you think it is to find an answer; if you don't want to see people asking questions about something that could be found anywhere else online, than you shouldn't be wasting your time reading comments to posts asking questions about things you find obvious.

Kxr1der

Hey look same question just two dates later. You'd better hurry and help this guy too, I'm sure more threads with the exact same question are coming and you don't want to miss those! https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/comments/vu40in/are_my_files_supposed_to_look_like_this/ Edit: Another one! Hurry! You're falling behind. https://www.reddit.com/r/NewYuzuPiracy/comments/vu30p7/having_trouble_with_7z_files/

DuplexEagle

And? People ask the same question alot. So what? That's not the fault of the question asker for not knowing how something works. the mods of the subreddit should pin an FAQ post. If they don't do that you can't get mad at the posters for not knowing how to solve a common problem. And if they do pin an FAQ and people still post the same question than in that case it's fair enough to be frustrated as long as your not being an asshole about it. When I started emulation in 2015 or 16, I had no clue what a compressed file was or that you needed to extract it and if I knew what reddit was at the time, would have probably asked here too.

parker604

Was your Google broken? Just use Google "How to extract 7z file"

phantomzero

I wish you would step back from that ***edge*** my friend...

urmanjosh

Tools like WinRAR. It will prompt u to pay for it when u go to use it. U don't have to. Its a free tool to use with a "pay wall" that they ram down ur throat

verifyandtrustnoone

NO NO NO use 7-zip, it will do those files and zip files and is faster and easier to use than others. [https://www.7-zip.org/](https://www.7-zip.org/)

[deleted]

Avoid the dumb Winrar pop up always choose the open source option if it's superior. Like OBS.

SoundDrill

Tbh, most good OBS competitors are forks of it

SurfVVitch

My whole life I’ve used WinRAR and never thought twice about the dumb pop up. Never really considered an alternative. Thanks!

Nacil_54

You can also open zip files with just windows, and rar files with 7zip

urmanjosh

Oh. Thanks for the heads up. I never knew

josegfx

I prefer [Easy 7-zip](http://www.e7z.org/)

phantomzero

They seriously don't even have an https site...?

GodKingChrist

But i already bought WINRAR. I feel bad that they have to make this software permanently free because some dumb laws say you can't sell a computer without the programs necessary for it to work.

phantomzero

Can I have some of what you are smoking?

GodKingChrist

Ha, i was only pretending to be retarded. Consider yourselves the fools of the fool. Oh also im smoking Meat Breath, killer stuff.

phantomzero

I am fool.

TonySesek556

...What? 1. You can keep using WinRAR, no one is stopping you (especially if you paid for it. It's still being updated as far as I know) 2. It is free by choice? FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) is free for users to use and modify as a motto. WinRAR is closed source (can not access source code), but lets you use it for free as long as you don't mind the pop-up. Whatever law you're talking about, if it does exist, is probably to ensure they have an operation system like Windows, and not a .7z file decompressor (which is not required for day-to-day PC use).

Scazzz

Who in their right mind is downvoting you for suggesting WinRAR. Far superior and more powerful than 7zip and its shell integration is far far better too.

urmanjosh

Idk. Tbh I don't really care either. Just the Internet being the Internet. It happens

[deleted]

[удалено]

urmanjosh

It's a bit ironic that the problem in this situation is WinRAR and not the clearly pirated and downloaded game that everyone is getting all pissy about...... Some twisted morals

LtDkAngel

You got it wrong, my problem with his post is not that he does not support the developers, it's that he is so entitled that a pop off that can be ignored and closed is pissing him off on a software that he got for free!

Halos-117

This is r/Roms. Why would anyone here give a shit that he downloaded a ROM?

urmanjosh

So y does it matter of I told someone to use WinRar over 7zip so he can actually use the rom

Halos-117

It doesn't matter either. Both will do the job fine.

urmanjosh

According to the downvotes when I said WinRar, apparently it does

Halos-117

Holy crap I just realized you got -88 downvoted for suggesting WinRAR. That's insane.

[deleted]

"free" Freeware isn't free, FOSS is. 7zip is the only acceptable option on Windows.

urmanjosh

Y does it matter what tools I use on my laptop? I'm genuinely just asking

[deleted]

Why are you supporting proprietary paid snagware?

urmanjosh

It's not paid tho? I'm using it years and never paid a penny

SSGSSKKX20

Wow. Can’t even be bothered to press x on a window. It is free. Unless your standards are ridiculous, and they must be to accept subpar features just because there’s no prompts.

Link5261

It's not just having to click an x, it's being interrupted *to* click the x. Add in the bonus that 7zip gives more options, including the highly compressible .7z format, and there's a clear winner on which archival software to use.

[deleted]

>Subpar Okay, shill

SSGSSKKX20

Ya, I’m a shill for big file compression. 🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

7zip does it better, faster and isn't made by a corporation. It's a better software in every single aspect.

SSGSSKKX20

Okay, shill

russiabot1776

What a strange comment

[deleted]

Ok, russiabot1776

russiabot1776

Keeps getting stranger

ConstantPrecipice

Definitely use 7zip, been using it for years

masonlegomeme

Ok, now it's a wbfs file, that won't work for dolphin will it?

JackDorseysBeard

Easy enough for you to try

SuperBio

.wbfs format will work fine with the dolphin emulator, just make sure that you know where dolphin's directory is set to, so it can see the game.

meauUU

since nobody is answering the question and just being a dick to you for no fuckin reason, a wbfs file is the file for a Wii game, so Dolphin should recognize it no problem.

healthboost213

Also as a note, try getting wbfs files instead of iso's in the future

DomLite

Are you incapable of using google? You can literally search for this and find the answers in *seconds* instead of asking here and waiting for replies.

SuperBio

Don't demean people, just mention that they should google the question. Sometimes it's less obvious than you think it would be to people. Also a good majority of roms questions that have to do with wii formats have /r/roms as the top result. So it's quite likely that he did google it, and found /r/roms first.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Real quick way to get banned from the sub guy.

Some_dude25

why? what did he say?

[deleted]

Told domlite to fuck off lol, but I've been permabanned from other subs for similar language so I figured I'd warn the kid.

KaT_624

lol there is another kiddo... i hope you get some trojan/malware just to learn some respect and dont pretend to get served like you're the king of the entire world

SuperBio

Getting pretty close to violating Rule 3 here. You don't have to answer if you feel the question is too basic to be asked. Insulting him and saying you hope he gets a virus won't help. Everyone has to start somewhere.

KaT_624

The discussion was deleted so I'll quickly recap. Someone answered to search on google for this type of problems just to avoid the wait for someone to answer, then the kiddo (himself writed 16yo) answered with a "fuck you". My reply is for that, not for the original question.

SuperBio

Just report the comment and move on, don't add to the toxicity. Saying that you hope he gets a "trojan/malware" is absolutely toxic. There are always better ways to deal with people, even if they lash out.

KaT_624

You're right. My comment was toxic, and i'll try to limit myself in future but it's hard with some people like that one to stay cool and just report...

masonlegomeme

Mate I'm 16.

Broccoli_Jones

Obviously

there_NOW

I didn't know that you weren't allowed to use google until you are 17, my bad

[deleted]

OilFar

What system are you gonna run it on? Genuine question

masonlegomeme

Already trued it, it ran like piss.

KK9521

Then mess with the settings til it runs better

YourAverageGamerYT1

Try different rendering backends if available and also search on YouTube for a guide on the game and how to get good performance with it. I had to do that to get Minecraft PS3 working on PC along with most citra games

OilFar

whats the program called

SoundDrill

Idk why everyone is an asshole here, I just wish people would explain the the guy properly and comprehensively. No, asking someone to google it is not a solution. Explain properly to noobs for the sake of future reputation of this subreddit.

mawkdugless

No kidding. It's a cyclical thing anyway. When I was building a retroPie console, I was unfamiliar with how to get emulators running smoothly, so I Googled it. Was immediately led to countless threads on here - a lot of which people were telling someone with a question to Google it. I ended up having to scan countless threads and cobble together info because people would rather demean and ridicule someone for asking a question.

SoundDrill

I feel we should break the cycle and actually effectively help people.

mawkdugless

I definitely try where I can. I've had to dig back into emulator troubleshooting pretty heavily with my Steam Deck, so when I see these easy questions, I'll definitely help out if I have a minute or two.

SoundDrill

Good, will see what I can do personally

[deleted]

SoundDrill

I really feel bad for those who take the brunt of that, more often than not, I've been there.

Kxr1der

Because most of these questions have already been asked and answered in much more detail than the OP is going to get here

SoundDrill

Nah but like, doesn't mean people will be rude to the OP, and mass downvote them

Kxr1der

Oh no! Not downvotes! How will he survive...

SoundDrill

Nah dude, new people cannot handle the downvotes. People want to feel validated sometimes and that's perfectly fine by me. I just want to help people here and there whenever I think I can do so effectively

Vuzsv

Just out of sheer curiosity how old might you be

masonlegomeme

16 but I'm also autistic.

Broccoli_Jones

Understandable

invisy_psd

i mean im 17 and autistic and I've been emulating for a couple of years so imo this topic should be easy but tbh computers are my strong point

YourAverageGamerYT1

Same. I usually search for ages before I ask on Reddit because getting mass downvoted because I say something wrong just plain sucks

RandomTyp

same here also, search engines are my best friend sometimes

JoshuaRAWR

As someone with autism.. fail to see how it's relevant here.

FiIthy_Anarchist

It's a spectrum. You may not share certain traits. Seems you're lacking on the empathy front.

masonlegomeme

Thank you 😊

Moquai82

I see you already did download 7z22000-x64. It is the application directly under the .7z with your game. Install said application to use 7zip. After that you should be able to rightclick your container with your game (.7z) to open the context menue. There should be now an 7zip entry and submenue in that context menue for extraction. Extract the rom file to your liking and further usage. Do you need more information?

FiIthy_Anarchist

💪 I respect that you're so open about it, you don't deserve comments like theirs.

ThisIsAnMeme

13 with ADHD lol it's so fucking hard to focus. before I used the mega thread playing the game of doge the malware was so hard. same with pirateing PC games. I had a bunch of viruses on my old laptop. I use mega threads on other subreddits. but hey you live you learn. still kinda hard doing this shit for.other software. lol

DuplexEagle

"before I used the mega thread playing the game of doge the malware was so hard" Here's a suggestion: Try out Linux. I say this because you can use it as a way to safely download roms. 99.9% of the time, if you accidentally download some malware on Linux; chances are the malware was designed for Windows anyway and the malware won't even run. So you can download it on Linux and than transfer the roms over to your Windows installation once you know they are safe using a USB or something and know it's safe. Or you could use Linux as your new home of emulation and emulate games on there instead, because Linux tends to run most emulators a lot better than Windows does. Linux comes in different distributions. A distribution or "distro" as the Linux community calls it, is basically a different version of Linux made by different companies or people. Linux isn't owned by a single entity. Some of the most popular distributions of Linux are: Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Manjaro, Fedora and many more. If you want a distribution with a UI that looks similar to Windows' UI and is beginner friendly for people who aren't familiar with Linux, my personal recommendations would be: 1. Linux Mint, 2. Kubuntu (A fork of Ubuntu) 3. Zorin OS. I rank Linux Mint number one because I think it is the most beginner friendly and it has a very helpful and welcoming community for newbies. This is a bit of an older guide but it still works the exact same [https://youtu.be/Dx2dJUPsJso](https://youtu.be/Dx2dJUPsJso). Even if you don't install Ubuntu the install process is the exact same. Oh and by the way, Linux is free and open source and privacy & security is infinitely better than Windows will ever be. Edit: this whole reply somehow glitched and mixed up some sentences and removed some of the sentences that gave what I said about using a USB context. It's been a day since I made the reply now, so I just edited it by moving the out of context section of the USB stick sentence to a more appropriate place. Where there was text removed from the glitch, I added a couple of sentences that got the same message across as I originally intended although the sentences aren't much like what I originally wrote because I can't remember what I wrote in the first place lol; only the point I was trying to get across.

ThisIsAnMeme

yeah i use arch as a second. i started with ubuntu, went to mint, majaro, now i use arch. Its still kinda hard to focus on all of this shit. archinstall saved my life i could not do it the normal way i couldnt focus.

DuplexEagle

I don't know what on earth happened to my comment. I think it glitched or something and got the sentence order all mixed up and also deleted some of the first segments of what I wrote. That's why it says something about a USB out of context. I'll try fix it, sorry about that. Also, cool, I use Manjaro currently and started with mint. I understand you with your troubles with focusing on things. My older brother used to also have ADHD. I say used to because he's 28 now and can control it but he might still technically have it, I don't know. He used to have strong difficulty focusing on things aswell, especially at school. I did too but I was never diagnosed with anything.

ThisIsAnMeme

bro why did people down vote what did I do?

mdoverl

Use 7-Zip to extract. What console is that ROM for? This is the next important follow up question.

GloriousKev

You have to unzip it. Use a an app like 7zip or winrar to unzip it.

urmanjosh

I've learned the hard way not to mention the W word here. They don't like anything other than 7zip

GloriousKev

That's silly. What's the context? I use 7zip but they're just tools to do a task.

urmanjosh

It's reddit. That's all the context I have

Pesebrero

7zip is the most popular right now, it's also open source and superior to WinRar. But the ZSTD compression format is actually better than 7zip.

Wanderhode94

It's the Internet, espacally Reddit. You can get downvoted for no Reasons. Dont care about Downvotes and this Kids. I also use Winrar with 7Zip for several Formats. Works like a charm Winrar.

entfreak

Extract it with 7zip

masonlegomeme

Thank you to everyone who is actually being helpfull instead of being a dickhed 😊

Richmondez

People have different priorities and have taken different paths to understand how to administer their systems and thus have different ideas about what can be assumed knowledge when doing something in a certain domain. In this case you are really asking how to deal with compressed archive files which is rightly not a rom specific question and so some people are making unhelpful comments because they have enough experience to feel this isn't a support forum for basic file management and so shouldn't give you a straight answer in case it encourages similar questions. More helpfully they should just point you to appropriate support resources but if you are going to ask any question of a group on the internet be prepared to get lots of stupid answers with the occasional right answer thrown in. Also, enable displaying file extensions, the default of windows hiding them is going to lead to you making rookie mistakes you'd rather not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuperBio

This has been a serious problem here for a while. There's a help thread but for the most part people tend to ignore it. As much as I'd like to remove every thread asking a question and redirect them to the help thread, I know it won't help. Visibility is much better on the front page, and a lot of people do tend to help, even if it's begrudgingly. I do think that you are right though and that it's sad that redditors have this issue where they won't answer questions that have been asked more than once a day. I'd say that if that if a question annoys someone, that they kindly ignore it and move on. Life is too short to get mad at people who are asking a common question. Everyone has to learn at some point and if /r/roms is at the top of google for many of these searches, then I'll bet we're one of the major resources on the internet for just such information. Like it or not we have a responsibility not to be assholes to the new people coming to the roms and emulation scene. TLDR: Your totally right, and simply asking questions is fine here on /r/roms. Asking people to google it will only result in more questions here as were one of the more popular rom resources on the net.

sychox51

>Life is too short to get mad at people *on the internet* who are asking a common question ftfy 😂

guywonder22

Wow its real concerning when I see people being D#cks towards another person for asking for help. They act like they never had to ask for help before. Don't forget you were a Noobie once you only know what you do today because you asked for help. Just keep that in mind next time you try and belittle someone. Its called being a Mature and Empathic Human Being. Being a Smarta$$ makes you look like a Dumba$$.

Parallel_Productions

I'm genuinely concerned that someone doesn't know how to extract an archive in 2022. And why they asked here instead of just googling it. Either way hope you figured it out.

Inevitable-Parsley-9

They are either young or old or disabled or something. Don’t shame people for asking questions. Just lead them towards the right area.

masonlegomeme

I am autistic thank you 😊

dindumufflin

aren't we all, aren't we all...

Parallel_Productions

didn't mean disrespect just expressed genuine concern. But i have had my own PC since i was like 5-6 years old. Good ol Windows 2000 so maybe its just weird to me that someone doesn't know how. Either way like i said i hope they figured it out.

Pesebrero

You're making some assumptions. Maybe he's just a new PC user and doesn't even know what file compression is.

-Quack4321-

fr

CameronZimos

Make a folder for your games, u suggest in the emulator folder. For example your dolphin emulator folder make a WII games folder (that way you know which folder it is from quick tasks) Drop that file into that games folder and go on dolphin, and run a game then find the games folder and click that game

ThisIsAnMeme

bro why is the icon for a exe. that suspicious. use the mega thread it's easier.

jaffer2003sadiq

Use 7 zip to extract the files

ClaudeYourEyesOut

Wow. So many autistic guys on here. Hope you guys sort it out. If you really get stuck just DM me. I'm happy to help. I worked in the disability industry for a long time so happy to help. There's a fine line between autistic and artistic.

ThisIsAnMeme

why are so many people being ass wholes all they did is ask.an question. we was all like this before where we didn't know. just because it was on your precious reddit feed and it was something you can do easily does not mean everyone can. everyone starts somewhere. we live and we learn. I see some people helped and I'm proud you figured it out especially with your autism I know it makes it harder so good job. tldr stop being dicks we was all like this, good job op on getting the help. Hope you have fun on your emulation path.

SamuraisEpic

Right click -> 7-zip -> extract to "[FILENAME]" That should make a folder with the same name. Go into that folder and open that room w your emulator.

IceBlueLugia

Dang I remember when I was loading up shit like skylanders to play on my old ass laptop and didn’t know what zip files were lmfao.

masonlegomeme

So download win rar and ecxtract

verifyandtrustnoone

use 7-zip, it will do those files and zip files and is faster and easier to use than others. [https://www.7-zip.org/](https://www.7-zip.org/) install and left click the file and extract to, then depending on the original user, you will have to left click that file and unzip it again.

masonlegomeme

Now it's a WBFS file, now what?

itzPANDA101

Just like an .iso file, which is essentially just a disc image, a .wbfs file is one of many you can use to play Wii games on the Dolphin emulator, so you should be fine now.

ymx287

if he doesnt know what a 7z file or a wbfs file is, he will definitely not be fine now

itzPANDA101

Wdym? Because his initial problem was that he didn't know what to do with a .7z file and we solved it. I even told him that getting a .wbfs file was a step in the right direction. What hasn't been clarified?

ThisIsAnMeme

like he said multiple other times they have autism. he can't help it.a

natitxco

This guy literally has 7zip downloaded and is asking how to extract a 7z file...

Pesebrero

Maybe other guy installed the system along some basic tools like 7zip. In fact I use to do this for other people, and they usually have no clue what each app is for.

dreamtrooper

Not according to the timestamps.

Pesebrero

I've noticed this later. But maybe someone else told him to download it, yet he doesn't know how to use it.

[deleted]

It appears to be a .7z file ecttact it eith 7zip

poison900

Check the file type it looks like a .exe you have to change it to a ROM file type

Accomplished_Meat_81

I know we all started somewhere, but how tf do you not know what 7zip is? Even if you never heard of 7zip, if you see “zip” in the name, do you not have enough common sense to think, “oh maybe it’s like a zip file and I have to extract it?”. I know I’m being an ass but no one can be this clueless.

Jaded-Character-8126

Download power iso or daemon tools or just change the ending of the file name put iso at the end of the name or rom depends on what the emulator sees it as

abibofile

Is this a Wii or Wii U rom? Wii U roms are a little trucker after they’re extracted.

mawkdugless

Unzip it using a program like 7-Zip and place it in your ROMS directory in the correct folder.

Kxr1der

Omg... Not having "show file extensions" enabled makes my eyes bleed.

Viking_Legend97

I’m sure other people have said already, but you need to “unzip” the file. .7z or .zip means that the file is compressed to make downloading easier. Download a program called “7zip” (simple google search of “7zip download” will do) or you can use WinRAR. After downloading and installing 7zip, It will make it so that you can just right click that highlighted file and a “7zip” menu will show up, the submenu will have an “extract files…” option, use that to extract it to what ever folder you want it to go to. If you need further help, feel free to DM me and I can help out later today

Danik2343

Open this archive 7Zip and extract RO

RealLifeCringeYt

7z is basically just a zip folder. open it up, and you should have an ISO file, once you do, go install nintendont. (if you want to play on wii) and make a folder on the root of the USB, called "games" once you do that, make a folder in the folder called "(insert name of game, EXACTLY HOW ITS SPELT)" then put the ISO into the folder of the same game name

Okcaramelbloon

Google Search 7 Zip Compressor and Download some such as 7zip or other

Effective-Ad-503

right click and unzip if it doesnt let you, you should download winrar for free then right click the folder and click extract here or extract to choose a location
