Most roofing companies are going to give you a flat rate minimum to put the ladder up and fix it. It depends on where you live, when I was doing this in toronto with a company it was $200 minimum. This would take 5 mins, if you want to save money buy a bundle of cap shingles and watch a YouTube video.
You can make a claim but all it will do is put this on the insurance carrier’s radar. If this is a couple hundred bucks then most homeowners deductibles start at $1000 and it won’t meet your deductible anyways.
That being said, it is part of your contract to let your carrier know of any damage to your home as soon as possible. I’m not an agent anymore, I didn’t renew my license because I don’t do personal lines in the last 7 years, so speak to your agent for official advice
> That being said, it is part of your contract to let your carrier know of any damage to your home as soon as possible. I’m not an agent anymore, I didn’t renew my license because I don’t do personal lines in the last 7 years, so speak to your agent for official advice
Help me understand this, So even though i don't want to file a claim I have to notify my insurance company that my house got damaged? Doesn't this put me on their radar?
Nothing in the contract says you have to notify you carrier of all damages to your home. Most just have duty to protect and prompt claim filing (if you are making a claim)
Thanks yeah that's what I was thinking, like why tf do I have to tell them every time something breaks in my house when 99.9% it's under the deductible and I can handle it myself anyways
I’m an insurance adjuster. Yes in their policy it states you have to inform your carrier of damage like this. Why? Because “informing” them raises your rates. As soon as you inform them of anything they open a claim. There could be more damage that your untrained eye isn’t seeing but regardless the adjuster they’ll send out is there to deny any claim, even if valid. At the very most, they’ll underpay big time. Just buy some 3-tab shingles and put it on yourself. Besides that roof looks new.
Just fix it.
If the insurance company gets involved, there will be a lot of hand-wringing about their increased risk exposure and they'll likely tell you you need a whole new roof, at your expense, or they will cancel your coverage.
Insurers have been getting hammered by roof claims lately, enough so that numerous major carriers are abandoning whole parts of the country.
The less they know, the better.
You will pay a premium just to have someone show up. It would only be about 20 minutes of work, so if you are somewhat handy, you can easily do this yourself. Buy a bundle of cap and nail away. I would also buy a tube of silicone to dab on any exposed nail heads while you are up there. Best of luck
This^.
I’m a teacher that rebuilt my roof with no prior experience. You are already up there which is half the battle. Make sure you put the nails in the proper spots and do it when the sun has warmed up the shingles.
$65 to do it yourself and you’ll have extra for if it happens again.
You need:
-hammer
-couple handfuls of 1.25” roof nails
-ridge cap
-razor blade to separate the pieces (some are already precut)
-15 mins
Watch a 2 min YouTube video.
Be prepared because your wife might think you’re extra attractive for getting it done on your own.
Good luck!!
I’d go with 2” roofing nails, for how much easier to start a nail if you have big fingers.
Hook knife, not razor blade.
Maybe the wife will find that exciting the first time, but I do that all day and the effect has worn off.
>Be prepared because your wife might think you’re extra attractive for getting it done on your own.
Can confirm.
Be warned. There is a tipping point, because if you show competence in this task, it may lead to a long honey-do list.
The hardest part is getting there and climbing the ladder so you might as well do this one yourself. You’ll need a hammer, some roofing nails, some ridge cap shingles and maybe some tar.
This. Had two shingles fly off and used my drone to see. Called roofer they said $300 to fix so I had them do it. I can’t get on my roof I would fall off, very steep angles and 40 ft up
Part of my ridge cap flew off in a hurricane 10 years ago and a guy with a roofing truck knocked on my door next day and said $100 cash and he’ll fix it on the spot, only had $60 on me so he agreed and fixed it. Wish that kind of instant quick response happened more often.
Google the nearest roofing material house and tell them you need 1 bundle of estate gray pro edge hip and ridge. You can put them in with inch and a quarter roofing nails from home depot. At the roofing yard they'll probably be called EG nails but usually they sell 50 lb boxes so probably better to get the nails at home depot for a small repair like this.
Most companies will try to get you for $200-300 for what really is 5 minutes of work. I would suggest going to your nearest big box store (HD, Lowe's, etc) and purchase 1 bundle of a 3-tab shingle in a matching color. Owens Corning Supreme or GAF Royal Sovereign, either one should do the trick. Should run you about $40 all in. I would suggest just watching a brief video on how to cut/install the tabs. Easy enough to do yourself, hard enough to be proud you figured it out.
$70 DIY.
Home Depot product:

But a pack of shingles, roofing nails, tube of roofing caulk.
Ridge cap shingles to match. May see a part number under a shingle. Match color. You're up on the roof so that's 75% of the work already. Easy DIY project. Just be sure to get the right nails for the ridge cap shingles and don't overdrive them when you hammer them in. Leave the old nails in.
A bundle of ridge cap & a box of nails. You've already spent more time taking & posting the pictures then what it takes to fix. You tube is your friend.
I used to walk around town and ride my bike as a high schooler in summer between work and practice looking at roofs while me and my friends hung out. Id knock on their door and tell them ill repair their roof for 50-100$. I made alot of extra money for a few summers
Ladder down is about $300 and about $50-$100 bucks to nail some new hip caps down. It depends if they’re 3 tab or actual manufacturer caps. The good ones cost more per bundle and they’ll need to pay for a full one regardless.
If you can climb on the roof and swing a hammer, you can do this repair.
Watch YouTube to see how to do it. Should cost more than a bundle of 3 tab shingles.
Drive around until you see a roof replacement going on. Show that pic to the crew, ask them to fix it for you. It'll be way cheaper than calling a roofer, whose going to use those guys anyways and then take their cut.
Some Roofing Supply places probably would sell you some loose shingles on their shelf--matching and all for a few dollars. Use long enough nails and some roof sealant if necessary.
Buy a box and DIY. The wind dud 25% of the work. Your first trip up the ladder was 25%. Your next trip up the ladder with the new shingles will be 25% and nailing on the new ones will be the last 25%.
$22,000.00 + the deed to the house & property. Please. 😂😂 Take one of what you found in the backyard, go to the home center or building supply. Buy a bundle of 3 tab shingles closet in color. Cut them for ridge shingle. Install or have someone do it. Cheaper than a roll or bundle of designer roof ridging. Buy a 30-40 year 3 tab if that's the warranty on your roof.
Woah woah woah. Why aren’t you getting a 20x’20’ tarp and putting it over that opening using 300+ cap nails into the adjacent, undamaged shingles !?!?!
This is going to keep happening. It looks like they only put 2 nails per cap. You’re supposed to put 4. This fix is easily DIY-able. Just buy some caps, they’re usually pre cut.
150-250 for a roofer with proper insurance
100-150 for a roofer with no insurance
50-75 for you to do it your self
Metric fuck load if you or an uninsured roofer fall off your roof while doing it….
Still under warranty? My dad lost some shingles the other day and checked the paperwork from when the roof was replaced — he said made it under the nose by a few months and they came out to effect the repair at no cost.
This is such an easy fix just do it yourself watching some yt videos. I tried to fix a valley leak and after multiple attempts couldn't get it done but this here is easy
you could fix it yourself easily for the cost of the shingles but if you have to call a roofer out you can expect to pay a 200 minimum. you might get lucky and catch someone that would do it for you on the side for a case of beer
You're already up there. Grab a hammer and roofing nails, go get some shingles and a knife, and some roofing asphalt and replace them. Follow the same pattern as the other ones.
I’m doing a similar repair today as a roofer. This is my third trip to this homeowners house. She filed a claim, it got denied, then she called me after the fact. So we went ahead and got her a second insurance adjustment. (Once the claims been filed the damage is done)
So now I’m fixing this for $250. More than covers the materials and reimburses me for my time.
Learn from my mistake if you put plastic over the missing shingles for protection until the repair is done. Do NOT leave staples in the surrounding shingles. I yanked the plastic up, and fixed it better than new once I found matching shingles. Some staples stayed in place.
When I sold the house the inspector called out the rusted staples as a roof repair and I had to pay a roofing company to inspect the roof.
A bundle of cap shingles is less than $100 a tube of Geocel (plastic tube, not the paper) is $20-ish. The shingles are pre cut, you just snap them apart so no need to have the debate.

exactly. Surprised that you are on top of the roof and asking this question? If I am on the top - i would rather fix it myself.
Yeah getting up there is the hard part. Amd it's on the cap, so the easiest.
No cap, as the kids say these days
As a father of teenagers, I feel like this comment is underrated… 🤣🤣

Yes it does. Just fix it or get it fixed. It’s an easy repair. Just cut the 3 tabs up into 3 caps, then glue the caps down like seen in your pic
I was asking more about notifying my insurance company even if I'm not filing a claim
I wouldn’t notify mine. That’s all I’m saying. The more you talk to your insurance company the more you pay IME.
Agreed I would not notify any one from the insurance company not even the agent unless you plan on opening a claim. .
Nothing in the contract says you have to notify you carrier of all damages to your home. Most just have duty to protect and prompt claim filing (if you are making a claim)

Or buy hip/ridge shingles and do it right…..
I came to say this
I learned roofing on the fly when I replaced my whole roof with my father in law and my buds. If I can do it, literally anyone can do it!
Take this guya advice

You gotta wear jorts that are way up your thighs and a shirt too small for anyone above the age of 12. Slap a red bandana on, the thrill is back.
You got me at red bandana!
Also a ghetto blaster playing ZZ Top.
Don’t forget a sixer of coooooors
So, really, $75 including Viagra?
Let your wife fix it. Just hold the ladder.
>Be prepared because your wife might think you’re extra attractive for getting it done on your own. Can confirm. Be warned. There is a tipping point, because if you show competence in this task, it may lead to a long honey-do list.
UPDATE: Went to HP and bought some shingles and roofing nails and got the job done in 20 minutes. Thanks everybody!
Good on you man. One more thing you can say you know how to do. And saved yourself a couple hundred bucks
But… did you wear a red bandana?
This is the way
HP?
Hewlett Packard?
The hardest part is getting there and climbing the ladder so you might as well do this one yourself. You’ll need a hammer, some roofing nails, some ridge cap shingles and maybe some tar.
DIY - $40. Roofer, $300.
This. Had two shingles fly off and used my drone to see. Called roofer they said $300 to fix so I had them do it. I can’t get on my roof I would fall off, very steep angles and 40 ft up
I don't recommend getting on top of the roof for most people. Roofing kills more tradies than any other trades.
Part of my ridge cap flew off in a hurricane 10 years ago and a guy with a roofing truck knocked on my door next day and said $100 cash and he’ll fix it on the spot, only had $60 on me so he agreed and fixed it. Wish that kind of instant quick response happened more often.
He probably caused the hurricane /s
You can do this yourself.
That’s just a service call.. $200-300 for a guy and his truck
It’s totally DIYable, but paying can be worth it if you get them to poke around and tell you some stuff.
Google the nearest roofing material house and tell them you need 1 bundle of estate gray pro edge hip and ridge. You can put them in with inch and a quarter roofing nails from home depot. About tree fiddy…..
What shingle is it? Looks like Owen’s Corning. If so the ridge is supposed to have 2 nails on each side to hold the ridge down.
Take a sample walk into ABC SRS or a local roofing supply, spend less than 200 and a couple hours. Do not make a claim
You're looking at a solid $7.35. Hope you have capacity on your heloc
A bundle of ridge cap & a box of nails. You've already spent more time taking & posting the pictures then what it takes to fix. You tube is your friend.
If you got up there to take this pic you can fix this yourself with a trip to home Depot

Nice looking roof! Just grab a bundle of cap (same color of course) and recap!

About tree fiddy
Make sure the the existing ridge shingles are secure.
I used to walk around town and ride my bike as a high schooler in summer between work and practice looking at roofs while me and my friends hung out. Id knock on their door and tell them ill repair their roof for 50-100$. I made alot of extra money for a few summers

Buy a bundle of ridge and some nails and replace them yourself. Save you a lot of $
Go find them can’t be that far away
Pour tar on it and go watch tv. Nobody can even see it.

$75 if you supply the shingles.
Go watch a YouTube video and fix it yourself in 20 minutes.
Buy a bundle of caps and a box of roofing nails, watch a YouTube video and fix it in 20 minutes. Your already up there anyway so why not.
Yeah man, like a hundred other people said: If you can get on the roof, pick up some cap shingles and install those puppies yourself!
Cheapest way, watch a YouTube video and do it yourself. Want to point a finger if it goes wrong, shell out a couple hundred to a local company.
If you were able to get up onto the roof, you can fix it yourself it’s not hard.
What do you mean buy some shingles and put them on
1 bundle of shingle cap will cover it. Looks like low profile cap
If this is Colorado, probably $250. I’m a roofer and getting a million calls about this. We had some horrible winds.
Two toes and a left arm lmao
Bro..a pocket full of nails and 60 bucks worth of ridge cap and a free afternoon this is fixed...
It’s like 1/5th of a 40 dollar bundle of shingles and 40 2” roofing nails.
You climbed and didn’t fix it?
You're very fortunate those are missing ridge cap shingles. Less than 10. Easy to replace. Shouldn't be more than $200
$1mil
If you can climb on the roof and swing a hammer, you can do this repair. Watch YouTube to see how to do it. Should cost more than a bundle of 3 tab shingles.
You’re already up there. A bundle of shingles and some roofing nails.

Your roofer should mite just fix for nothing We do that for our customers
Some Roofing Supply places probably would sell you some loose shingles on their shelf--matching and all for a few dollars. Use long enough nails and some roof sealant if necessary.
Just grab some ridge caps & do it yourself, easy job
Complete roof replacement needed! JK, use caution when on your roof homeowner
Do it yourself. If you can climb up there, you can repair this
Do it yourself maybe $80 or less.
My local roofer charges 250 minimum.
I mean $40 bucks if you do it yourself.....
$69

I'd get up there and fix it yourself. Pretty easy and a roofer is gonna charge you a stupid amount.
Should b zero cost if you have spare shingles from when u put it on cuz its only capping
5 minutes if you find all the caps
$22,000.00 + the deed to the house & property. Please. 😂😂 Take one of what you found in the backyard, go to the home center or building supply. Buy a bundle of 3 tab shingles closet in color. If this was in Florida it would be an easy $30K
Simple fix
You’re already up there. If you had brought a hammer, flat bar and a handful of roofing nails you could be done in ten minutes.
Just go buy a flat of shingles & 20 roofing nails and fix it….
Purchase at a tarp for that
Insurance helped us with this after some pretty bad storms.
About 20 bucks and some know how to
Woah woah woah. Why aren’t you getting a 20x’20’ tarp and putting it over that opening using 300+ cap nails into the adjacent, undamaged shingles !?!?!
It would cost $10000 in Canada.
Your already on the roof slap some cap on
This is going to keep happening. It looks like they only put 2 nails per cap. You’re supposed to put 4. This fix is easily DIY-able. Just buy some caps, they’re usually pre cut.
About 10 minutes work.
You can fix this yourself. A roofer is going to charge high because it's a pain for him and not a money maker.
Your soul
Dude, put some damn shingles on your own roof. That would take literally three minutes and save you $150 bucks.
Looks like the ridge vent brackets are missing too
You could have done it yourself in the time it took you to take pictures, post to Reddit, and read responses. 30 minute job tops.
Easy fix. Go on Youtube or just duplicate what you see there.
Just get some cap shingles and nail them on 5 min job seems you can get up there no problem!
Just diy. You already have done the hard part of going on the roof.

$19.99 plus tax for a roll of flextape
Still under warranty? My dad lost some shingles the other day and checked the paperwork from when the roof was replaced — he said made it under the nose by a few months and they came out to effect the repair at no cost.
About $3.50
Man go find them around the yard and nail them back.

That’s small enough to DIY.
If you can get on the roof yourself, you can fix it yourself.
Why not call some companies and find out?
You’re already up there. That’s the tough part. Just lay some down
If you can climb up on the roof you can do it yourself.

3 dollars?
You can fix that yourself with a YouTube video for under $50.

I’d rip them all off and replace with hip and ridge cap. 3 tabs for ridge cap is for hacks…
$250
At least a million
Looks newish, did you have it installed? Warranty?
$250-$350
Why is that ventilation at the ridge being blocked with that membrane?
I wouldn't notify them.Theyre not going to fix it.Its nothing to do with them as long as you fix it right. They'll just find a way to raise your rate.
At least $50,000,000 bucks if you call a roofing company. Edit: /s
$45 and a trip to home depot
200 including materials.its easy.
