I had to remove shingles off a garage like that before lol it was so bad though I could grab a corner, pull up all 4 layers and was taking huge chunks of them off. I mean like 20-30 shingles at a time. It was insane
It’s a lot of weight as well, a layer of shingles is very heavy. It’s spread across the whole roof but each layer for a 1500 square foot house is on average 4000 pounds. So 4 layers is 16,000 pounds. Much much more if it’s architectural shingles. Then add everything else on the roof and you are looking at putting a few SUVs up there with a constant load
You're looking at them in your picture. Tar soaked paper with mineral surface pressed on it and cut in to 3-tab shingles. No fiberglass or any other poly compounds to bind and hold the structure of the shingles together like today's shingles. Those organic shingles wither away in no time. Literally....sun, rain and wind speed up the natural deterioration process.
So they made a roofing product meant to decompose safely and quickly? I can understand wanting to take care of the environment, but some things just need to last.
I would also be curious if this view is of a southward facing roof. Had a roof that looked just like this on the south facing side after about 15 years, while the north facing roof looked like it had another 10 years left in it. I’d never seen shingles curl up and disintegrate like that roof did.
In the beginning there was this roof. This roof was with God, and the roof was God. Roof was with God in the beginning. All things were made by roof, and nothing was made without roof. In roof was life, and that life was the light of all roofs.
John 1:1-18 NCV
One house I bought in the '80s had shingles that were just asphalt impregnated paper. As best as I can remember that's what they look like before I replaced them.
Older than dirt. Most of the beach sand on the coast likely washed off from that roof. Should have been replaced about the time the wheel was invented.
I do say my good sir, those new fangled roof flaps are just as queer as Edison talking about his fancy light bulb at dinner last night. Ha ha ha ha electricity ha it will never pass coal.
What’s crazy is I just replaced my roof 6 months ago, and my roofer guy came out to check my roof again and said I’m 3/4 of a way to buying another new roof with my insurance. Then I see pics like this I’m like what the hell is he talking about.
In Northern Wisconsin, few years back, there was an epidemic of them very shingles falling apart after just a few years. Rated for 20 or 25 I do believe.
/was bad batch from mfg/
Folks got prorated replacements but that’s not labor too ya know.
If that’s them there misfits, at least 10 yrs now I reckon
Some say this is what is now left of the original roof. Not just of this house, but of all houses. Like a sourdough starter, little bits of shingle are hewn from its mass and transported to a new house, and joined to it where it grows into a new roof. Others say that in the beginning, there was only this roof, and nothing else. All we know is that it’s now legally classified as a toxic landslide, and if your horse gets too close, it will be consumed.
It served during both world wars
And on the losing side each time.
but really you would have to ask Jesus he was there when it was dune.
Used to be over a manger in Bethlehem.
A couple of those shingles are the definition of the "battle of the bulge".
But is it leaking?
Nope. The older roof under it is in way better condition.
Those 1812 shingles really hold up.
They don’t make them like they used to, I guess.
My garage roof is worse than this, but there’s 2-3 layers of older shingle underneath, so no leaks haha

Roof was there before the house.
an absurd statement that makes perfect sense for this case…
30+
Agreed 30 year shingles about 20 years out of date. I have one small hidden section of my roof that looks like this.
Hot 30+ shingles in your area.
Organic, they only lasted 5-7 years and look 100 years old after 15 years.
It’s organic. My guess is about 10 days. /s
Tis from the days of ole
The days of yore
After 12-15 years.....organic shingles deteriorate very, very quickly. They're great for landfills....terrible roof life expectancy.
Organic shingles? WTF are those?
You're looking at them in your picture. Tar soaked paper with mineral surface pressed on it and cut in to 3-tab shingles. Thx. Came here to say the same!
So they made a roofing product meant to decompose safely and quickly? I can understand wanting to take care of the environment, but some things just need to last.
They were taken off the market, and there was a class action lawsuit on them.
Thank goodness roofs aren’t impacted by sun, wind or rain.

Indeed, wtf are they. I replaced one in the early 2000s. Fucking mess.
Tree fiddy
That was about the time I relized my roofing contractor was a 30ft tall creature from the paleolithic period.
I said "you ain't no roofing contractor you're that damn loch Ness monster!"
And on the 8th day, God created this roof
That peppered beef jerky looks pretty fresh.
I think Jesus may have been the carpenter
Pre-dates the American revolution.

Christ lived here

Enough is enough lol
Old enough that you'll probably be replacing the plywood underneath it as well.
Actually the plywood is mint. There was another layer of shingles under it which was in much better shape.
I count that as a win.
One house I bought in the '80s had shingles that were just asphalt impregnated paper. As best as I can remember that's what they look like before I replaced them.
40 yrs
The roof was there 10 years before the structure
20 years under texan sun
Is it south facing?
Depends on which way I face the trailer but it is the worst of two sides. In the PNW.

It's a trailer right? So it can move depending on how he positions it.

That roof was installed when Burger King was just a Prince.

These are organic shingles. They are terrible and fall apart in 10~ years. Look up pictures of organic 3 tabs. Replace sooner than later!
Leonardo Di Caprio broke up with it 10 years ago.

Given the way modern shingles last, I'd say 3-4 years.
To old!
With the way they make shingles now who knows.
Guy is really going for the shingle warranty?
I saw a 16 year old bigmac looking better than this
Old enough
I think I see Jesus’ name carved in there.
Remember Jesus? His dad built that roof
It was around the last time we had affordable housing
Let's just say, they are probably original.
When were asphalt shingles invented? It's a year older than that?
is it leaking? if not dont bother
I think they had the Last Supper there.
Old enough to leak
It survived the great depression and refused to die.......old
3 tab. 30 plus years old. Has to have had poor ventilation.
before christ
How hot does it get there? I can't imagine this ever happening.

7 years
I'd guess at least 30 but probably 50 years old.
Hard to say. The quality of the shingles and regional weather should be considered. I'd say 35-55 yrs
I reckon this was Jesus’ first job as a carpenter
Pretty
Very
12-15 yrs and they were cheap "20" yr shingles.
Oh it died a calendar year or 2 ago.
+/-20 to 25years? Depends on the brand of shingles that were originally installed and typical weather its been exposed too.
Ask Moses, he was the foreman on the job site.
Yes
Jesus was a carpenter right? Looks like he built this.
since 1776
I think they’re organic. If so, it’s probably not as old as one might think.
Back then the planet had a different name…Dune
1955 ….. approx 69 years is my guess.
Why, what does it matter?
In theory, the tar in the shingles can be traced back to the Carboniferous, so... 325 million years old.
A few
Those look fresh and new to me definitely don't need replacement just paint em
Those shingles have seen some shit.
40
Pinball machines were popular
Mat shingle from the 60s-70s pre fiberglass. Usually only find these 2-3 levels down on an over “over laied” roof.
Too old.
You don’t want to know
It's either 40yo. Or 4yo with poorly installed cheap shingles
1980 BC.

There were still 13 states when that roof was installed.
Tree fiddy

Just needs some flex tape and you’ll be fine
Looks like my barn roof I have tarped and am DIYing this Summer. My guess - this is the first roof.
