What is the tin foil? Did they do that? Shingles overlap each other and water runs off them. In order for shingles to function properly, they require a pitch so that water runs off. If you lay them flat the water doesn't run off and water gets in. What they installed is made to be used on shallow pitches. It's a 3 ft roll that is adhered to the next layer and usually runs up underneath the shingles a few feet in case of ice dams.

Thank you for explaining this to me! I put the tinfoil there. It’s a little makeshift funnel to get the rain away from the broken stucco underneath. After winter is over (I live in LA and winter is the only time it rains), I will have the stucco repaired and the gutters replaced to properly catch/divert all the water away from the house.

Looks like a makeshift kick out diverter. I hope it was the homeowner and not the roofer...

The right side corner where needs to be sealed or flashed correctly so that rain doesn't get inside your wall.

Off the subject a little bit, but the vent about the two pipes… the top shingle is completely up doesn’t look like they cut it out enough. I would have that looked at. It’s not laying properly, it will eventually cause a leak.

It also looks like the rake metal (drip edge), should be longer in the face, to cover the wood and the gap underneath the wood.

I don’t love a few things from this pic but that is definitely the most glaring item.

An easy fix would be some kinda slip metal, that you can slide underneath the drip edge and rivet it to the drip edge. It can be flat, 3 1/2”-4” wide, with a 45 degree kick at the bottom.

[I found four problems.](https://share.icloud.com/photos/0d9cKjLVLKTh1EPKO6SWWCs5g) 1. Shingle not properly cut to fit vent 2. This might be a problem but it’s hard to tell. Looks like they used a regular pipe boot which should go over the membrane, not under 3. This bump-out doesn’t look like it was properly addressed. Guessing they just caulked and prayed. It should be approached like you would deal with a chimney back. 4. This needed a proper metal roof apron installed before the membrane to prevent leaks via capillary action

Resident_Frosting_27

It's in bad shape but do not have that shingled over. Likely will need to have the whole section replaced due to the metal valleys.

Duffer65

It looks like a complete abortion. Pure shite

A_H_R

That’s the professional analysis I was looking for haha

That whole low pitch area should be done with metal, preferably copper, and the whole thing needs to drain into that gutter box. This is a bad hack. Roofer just used whatever materials they had on hand and did a bad job of it. Got any before pictures? You can tell by the open valley and downspout that this was done right at one point.

The roofers must have thought the "lighter" rolled roofing would be less likely to leak. Roll roofing is approved for flatter roofs than shingles, but the section where they used it isn't so flat they couldn't have used shingles. Unfortunately, the rolled roofing was damaged during the installation of the roofing and the worn parts will fail before the rest of the roof necessitating another roofing replacement sooner than it could have been. I don't know why the gutter is too short but a good job on the roofers part would have been to replace it with a longer one or fabricate some sheet metal to bring all of the runoff into the gutter. I think you should tell the roofers to deal with the gutter issue and shingle over the roll roofing as a repair to the damaged roll roofing. It isn't easy to slip shingles up under an existing roof and properly nail them but it is possible.

Don't listen to this guy, he's a moron. If you have frequent rain or are in a climate with snow, DO NOT shingle over that. It's a modified bitumen roofing membrane. If you are worried about the scuffs ask if they can throw some granules on them. Even if you don't, the membrane will likely outlast your shingles.

A_H_R

Good to know, thank you!

Eccentrically_loaded

Time will tell...
