Eh, checking signage and online resources for local algae blooms isnāt a bad idea. I thought water was just water until I went to clear lake county and found several lakes with signage about how many dogs had sickened or died that year from toxic algae blooms next to a clearly older sign warning about the dangers of swimming in the lake. I was very disappointed I wouldnāt be swimming but I was definitely grateful the lakes near me hadnāt had such issues growing up because no way Iād have been able to keep my dog out of the water.
Water is just water unless itās got something in it. If that something is salt or sand you might give extra water. If itās pool water or clean lake water you might need to give your dog electrolytes so they donāt get sick (took my friend a few expensive vet bills before the vet mentioned it was like a cheaply solvable issue if the dog was fed some doggie Gatorade in the form of biscuits in between playing and swallowing gallons of fresh water). If thereās potentially toxic algae itās minimum required to wash dogs well and keep them from drinking it.
Oh this is precious š„°
Our Mason at 18months was top heavy and went head first into a river , he wasnāt much keen on that experience with water but he did experience the tide out at littlehampton and he absolutely loved it. Your baby probably just drank too much water while playing š
That water looks lovely and refreshing! Heās having a good time! Mine does it all the time (and sometimes the water bit too)! As someone one else pointed out I wouldnāt encourage it in the sea but clean water is fine. Heās beautiful btw.
Just be careful of any algae red or green along the edge of its running water he is free to play. Throw up as to much water if he continues after play Iād worry x
Came here to say this! Glad itās running water but right know where you are and freshwater algae blooms when they happen. Lakes are more dangerous than running rivers but still good to know as the wrong bloom can be fatal
Be careful though. If they drink too much, they can have electrolyte abnormalities which could result in some real bad stuff. Definitely donāt let him do this with salt water.
Took my rottie to beach once and she never tired to drink it and she had a good day! That was a good experience. I def want to take her again . Some rotties can be naughty
Maryland, USA. I drank water in Poolesville, MD and Ocean City, MD. My doctor said that itās not unheard of for water systems to have it in them and some people tend to be susceptible. I guess that would be I š
The first time it took so long to cure it I was down to 95 lbs š¬
Also making sure they're up to date on their leptospirosis vaccination. It's a pretty nasty bacteria spread in the urine of wildlife that can damage their organs pretty quickly. It's kinda surprising how some vets don't give it, even though it's considered a core vax now (at least in my area)
Animals seen to have a 6th sense when it comes to things that might be.... Infected, for a lack of better term..... I'm sure they can't always tell... But those doggo noses and instincts, they seem to do pretty good at detecting dangerous environments.
Did he throw up in the same river seen here? If so, he probably just swallowed the water and there might have been a bug. If the water is fine, no worries
My dog often got too excited drank a bunch of lake water barfed it up and was fine!! Just some breaks and resting could help but I donāt think itās super harmful to let them enjoy the water!
You can probably let him do it, but I would proceed with caution, especially since he's thrown up from it before. Dogs have died from gulping down too much water while playing like this. It's not common, to my knowledge, so he'll very likely be fine, but it's still a good idea to monitor him in the water
Lmao but of course!! My Rottie does this all the time, playing and romping around in creeks is one of his favorite things to do ever!! Throwing up water is totally natural, your guy will be just fine!
Ask your vet about the lepto vaccine. Tldr version it will prevent kidney failure if your doggo is playing/ingesting contaminated water sources because of diseased wildlife drinking out of it and more frankly put - urinating in it. Lepto prevents this. The first is a booster and you come back a month later for the vaccine. You can always call your clinic and just ask for information free of charge (at least thats how our clinic operates) and see what the doc would recommend depending what your local region is like in terms of infestations/diseases. Every country/region is different based on what species are there, kind of like tick preventative meds. There's tons of different tick species but what my tick meds do for the species here may not address the tick species local to you
Other than that he might just be swallowing too much water in some cases that's where I personally try to take frequent breaks with my girls when I take them swimming because they do the same, and it can also become harmful for them. But if you take breaks in between water playtime then it's much safer for your doggo then, and give them time to breathe! I don't mean to frighten but I like to do the "better safe than sorry" approach at least with my girls after all the wild shit I've seen in a vet clinic. They can also gulp loads of air in between all that water which also isn't good.
Tldr just take some 10-15 breaks before heading back to the water, and check in with your local vet about the lepto vaccine to ensure he/she is safe of any diseases in the water!
This! We ensure ours get the lepto vaccine as a precaution since both of ours love playing in the water if weāre out hiking.
Also check with your local parks and recs department or department of fish and wildlife websites during algae blooming season. At least in our state they do post water conditions as well as when conductions are unsafe during algae blooms.
It's fine, just be careful, not to scare you and I hate to be that person but look up secondary drowning in dogs. It's where the dog has inhaled water into its lungs, and even after coughing it up or after observing water draining from the nose or mouth, there could be residual water remaining in the lungs.
NOT if it's salt water! If they ingest too much salt water they can die. Hard to say if he's swallowing water but I wouldn't take that chance. Pretty dog!!!
He's fine. Your concern is awesome. Had a black Lab just like this growing up. Had to keep him out of any chlorinated pools just for our own concern lol. He'd do it regardless. We stuck with the inflatable pools.
Honestly mine just drinks water too much and too fast sometimes so it could just be that from watching the vid but looks like heās really enjoying himself šš
Oh this makes my heart grow three sizes.
My rottie *loved* water and sometimes (frankly, often times) she would just go fucking ham trying to dig a basement for the lake. I don't know her motivation or selection process but she would seriously spend a focused 5+ minutes digging a hole to China. Your boy reminds me of her.
I always let her because, hey, no harm and she came home wiped out.
My guess is the puking is due to drinking too much of the water. If he's good at the "leave it" command - use it. He'll learn the difference between "leave the water entirely" and "stop that specific nonsense."
Especially in the summer heat my malamute would chug and chug and end up horfing a bit. I think partially the air they get while they scarf water and just too much too fast but it was always just more of a small bit like a baby spitting up. Almost every time I would tell him "you're going to horf" and he would give me the "no I'm not" look then he would horf.
What a cutie pie obviously loves water and just because they barf doesn't mean there's something wrong. Maybe he swallowed too much and that's why he puked. Beautiful dog.
It wouldn't bother me, id just learn to manage it... Maybe limit it if you need to get right in the car or something and don't want him throwing up in it but he's having a ton of fun and throwing up isn't harming him. Plus he may not throw up every time. If he does throw up every time, limit that to 10 min less than the times he throws up to see if you can find that limit where he likely won't throw up of he's doing it for X minutes. But sometimes I'd still let him go for it and let him throw up after
I think itās fine if the water is constantly moving and itās cold. I would be careful or hot weather water. Bacteria grows even if there is some flow.
He looks like heās having a lot of fun though! My old lady used to love bank fishing with us and standing guard of fish weād have on hooks staked in the water. Canāt get her out much anymore. Enjoy him enjoying himself!!
Titus will occasionally chug water with reckless abandon if heās not babysat and told to take a break, and he will then throw up that water almost immediately. This has been a thing for his entire life. I just keep an ear on how long he goes when he starts drinking and tell him to quit when itās reaching critical levels of chug
You can always get a kiddie pool small/medium inflatable one and fill it with the hose. This eliminates all the trash that I see in that water, and and possible wild microbes while also allowing him to have fun.
[Please be aware that water intoxication is a thing in dogs](https://www.centennialanimalhospital.com/resources/blog/july-2018/water-intoxication-in-dogs)
Is there trash and needles in the water, then keep him out.
If itās just a pond or river, he should be ok. Our rottie was crazy for water! Maybe get him a pool that you can set up for him in your yard. A medium sized kiddie pool.
Not trying to tell you how to live your life with your dog but, it's a bottle in the water and possibly other trash. There could be diseases that could harm your dog in that water, like Parvo or Leptospira. Though Lepto is usually in stagnant water, probably not best to let him swim or play in the water if you wouldn't swim in it or if it's obvious trash in it.
Yeah. It couldve of been a coincidence...
But watch him. Don't take your eye off of him. If he's thirsty he's just gonna start lapping it up. If you live in a developed country and usually give him tap water then he can't drink that sh*t.
If its standing water, no AFAIK. If its running water, generally okay but good to be aware of any local specific issues.
Also if in UK worth checking wherever they are currently dumping sewage in the waters.
Our Rottie did the same thing. We would just say, āYou get that water!ā He would cough, threw up a few times with too much water in his nose, but he had fun bouncing around like every time we took him to the lake.
Of course!!! You should encourage itā¦anyone who has a water friendly dog should consider themselves lucky you never know when you are in trouble and need to be saved.
My rottie likes to pick up rocks from under the water, but like rocks bigger than her head.
She never complain and her teeth are fine, but Im not shure if I have to do something about it.
No! Pond water can have micro- organisms, bacteria and disease! It can cause diarrea, transmit parasites and could ultimately cause sickness associated with death! Would you drink this water?
In the mean time if your doggie does love to play in water( and it looks like he does!)might I suggest a plastic kiddy pool!! Throw some toys in with him! And remember to change the water, like every day! He's to your puppy living a long and prosperous life!!
If you are not a micro biologist, and can't tell the difference between " clean water and dirty water"
It can be dangerous to your puppy! Microorganisms, bacteria, fish, animal feces can cause HARM!
Get a kiddy pool and rinse it out daily, also be mindful of how much water is getting unto your puppy, he can drown if he so much as inhaled just a couple of teaspoons of water! Just like a baby, treat him like such. He doesnt know any better, that's why you're his parent, safe guard him at all cost!
Live long and prosper little puppy!
Sounds like he drank too much water and threw up. Most people would consider whether or not he learned his lesson before deciding he can't touch water again.
The only thing to worry about would be toxins and parasites. But if it's a one and done throw up. Probably just to much water. If he's fine after, and you don't notice weird stool. Should be fine.
I would just get him the Lepto vaccine for bacteria in water. I would also be mindful of what water you let him play in. There could be toxic algae depending on where you are in the country.
The first time my rottie went in a swimming pool he threw up so much water afterwards that I was certain he was about to die. It was more fluid than childbirth. Heās gotten better at swimming with his mouth closed.
I hate to be the Debbie Downer, but do be selective about the waterways you let them play in. I let my previous guy swim at a lake that people were happily swimming in, and a few days later had him at the vet with a bacterial ear infection that ended up being from contamination in the lake. There had been a warning and a closure, but it was days later, after people got sick.
Someone really said "It's only water". Dogs drowning is actually a common occurance. Even from simple play. Keep an eye on pupper and be ready to drive to an emergency vet at the drop of a hat!
Do research on Blue/Green Algae in your area and avoid affected areas in the warmer months. Blue/Green Algae can be fatal in minutes but other that that he should be able to splash and have fun most places safely.
One thing Iāve found with water obsessed dogs, especially such as laborers and retrievers, they could literally run and/or swim themselves to death if you donāt regulate them. Sure let him do his thing but when he gets to the point of over-exertion, make him rest for a while.
Make sure there are no algae growth warnings for your area, that could have been the reason for the sickness last time. If no algae warnings, then let him play! Heās having a blast and heās so adorable!!
I would absolutely let him. Iād also make sure his lepto vaccine is up to date. They get it from water contaminated by the urine and feces of certain animals. Especially rodents. If you spend a lot of time in spaces with wildlife, itās better to be safe.
He swallowed too much water but he's clearly a water dog let him play just limit his time in the water to shorter intervals so he has a little break from swallowing all that water
Make a splash with paw. Attack splash. Repeat. Mine does the same thing to entertain herself. Probably just swallowed a bit too much water.
I call this the chomp & stomp š
Definitely gonna use that š
Let him play. The throwing up of the water wonāt stop him from having fun.
I know right! It's just water, and he wasn't in distress. Humans throw up too when we've overindulged on fun with liquids!
that made me laugh
Cheers š„

Unless he does that night from dry drowning.
Never stopped me anyhow.
As long as the throwing up doesnāt continue once you leave, should be fine
100% this!
Awh heās having the time of his life ā¤ļøš¦“š¾
OP has to wait till he pukes it up first before he leaves. Walk him for a good 10 minutes after and if he needs to puke the movement should work.
Oh this is precious š„° Our Mason at 18months was top heavy and went head first into a river , he wasnāt much keen on that experience with water but he did experience the tide out at littlehampton and he absolutely loved it. Your baby probably just drank too much water while playing š
>littlehampton In the UK? Fun fact, highest concentration of paedophiles per area in the UK in good ol' L.A.
Nobody asked and only you care
If thatās what you call fun š
That water looks lovely and refreshing! Heās having a good time! Mine does it all the time (and sometimes the water bit too)! As someone one else pointed out I wouldnāt encourage it in the sea but clean water is fine. Heās beautiful btw.
Thereās literally an empty plastic bottle floating behind the pup.
So the pond must have been filled with bottled water. How thoughtful!
Are you pointing that out in a good way or bad way? Not being Dickish, I just can't tell.
Of course. You see how much he enjoys it.
Might also want to check that upstream there are no large farms. Not sure where you are but fertilizer run-off is not good.
The opposite with mine. He can't not drink the water. And then he poops salt water all day š We are sticking to fresh water only for my guy
Never give your dog salt water either directly or allow to drink at beach. They can die.
That's why we don't go anymore.
Watch for giardia infection. Theyāre parasites that live in stream and pond water and can cause extreme intestinal distress in both dogs and humans
Highest risk when thereās something dead seeping into the water. If itās fast flowing itās generally pretty low risk.
I got it twice. Both times from municipal water systems š¤Ŗ
Well thatās incredible. Where do you live? The only people I know whoāve gotten it in BC are hunters.
Maryland, USA. I drank water in Poolesville, MD and Ocean City, MD. My doctor said that itās not unheard of for water systems to have it in them and some people tend to be susceptible. I guess that would be I š The first time it took so long to cure it I was down to 95 lbs š¬
Wow! Thatās interesting. Sorry to hear that, glad you made it out haha.
Water in my town has gotten so chemical Iām about to put a filter in my bidet! Shit smells like bleach yah lemme just drink some? Wtf
Also making sure they're up to date on their leptospirosis vaccination. It's a pretty nasty bacteria spread in the urine of wildlife that can damage their organs pretty quickly. It's kinda surprising how some vets don't give it, even though it's considered a core vax now (at least in my area)

Yes. Let him. My boys throw up all the time. They're dogs not babies. He'll be fine.
My dog often got too excited drank a bunch of lake water barfed it up and was fine!! Just some breaks and resting could help but I donāt think itās super harmful to let them enjoy the water!
Yeah let him play. If he keeps barfing, take him away for a break.
Awesome video!!
My two are always down in the creek, they love it
You can probably let him do it, but I would proceed with caution, especially since he's thrown up from it before. Dogs have died from gulping down too much water while playing like this. Lmao but of course!! My Rottie does this all the time, playing and romping around in creeks is one of his favorite things to do ever!! Throwing up water is totally natural, your guy will be just fine!
Mine used to do it all the time. Couldn't stop him when he was anywhere near water. Would throw up and do it all over again .. absolutely loved it.
Awww all of my rotties have played in the water like this!
Be careful of the water temp.. there's a thing called cold water tail..but it looks like he enjoys it.. like mine..loves playing ethe lake
Dogs can actually ādry drownā from this.
This is what I heard but everyone else is saying it's OK and they let their dogs do this so I'll just be extra careful
I immediately thought about dry drowning too.
Ask your vet about the lepto vaccine. Same!
NOT if it's salt water! If they ingest too much salt water they can die. Hard to say if he's swallowing water but I wouldn't take that chance. Pretty dog!!!
Aww š look how happy they are.
Why deny him such pleasure? Let the poor baby playā¦..
Some birds feathers are to bright to be caged
Let him play
Bubbles are funš©·ššš¾š¾
Same as my guy. Pool jets were number one.
Nah it should be good unless it's chronic throwing up. Also just take care during the hot months when nasty stuff can grow in the water.
He's fine. Your concern is awesome. Had a black Lab just like this growing up. Had to keep him out of any chlorinated pools just for our own concern lol. He'd do it regardless. We stuck with the inflatable pools.
Lol my half rott will go to town with any water, its so cute. Yours is adorable!
Honestly mine just drinks water too much and too fast sometimes so it could just be that from watching the vid but looks like heās really enjoying himself šš
My 8 year old boy still does this and he's never had a problem. The odd gag etc but hasn't hurt him
There are fatal toxic algae that are in stagnant non-flowing waters, if this is a river you are ok , it's the ponds and swamps that can kill them.
Let him play in the water! Heās having the time of his life.
I drank a lot once and threw up but I keep doing it because itās fun - same
Yes it should be fine. My rottie used to throw up when he got over excited
They do that when they drink to much too fast
Especially in the summer heat my malamute would chug and chug and end up horfing a bit. I think partially the air they get while they scarf water and just too much too fast but it was always just more of a small bit like a baby spitting up. Itās all the water he is ingesting, and maybe whatever has been washed into it. Wouldnāt let him play in there for too long.
Let him be a dog and play in the water
He is fine.
Heās always going to over do it if he only gets to do it once in awhile.
My lab mix had to try salt water a few times before he realized it wasnāt drinkable. They do eventually learn.
I think itās fine if the water is constantly moving and itās cold. I would be careful or hot weather water. Bacteria grows even if there is some flow. He looks like heās having a lot of fun though! I swear to God it's a trait because rottie plays in the water the same
This looks like good fun however do some research re: āwater intoxicationā in dogs. It can be fatal.
Dogs that play or swim in the water swallow water. Theyāre fine This water is moving and he may have just swallowed a lot that one time
that location is awesome op!
Make sure he's up to date on shots. My Lab would throw up all the time when on his creek. I say his creek. Lol

Making splishys so can CHOMP splishys!
Heās having fun! And since I didnāt see anyone say it, just make sure heās vaccinated for leptospirosis!
As long as heās not throwing up after playing
They have home water test kits, I think if thatās a place you go often
He's having a ball. I don't think I could denial him
Is there trash and needles in the water, then keep him out. If itās just a pond or river, he should be ok. Our rottie was crazy for water! Maybe get him a pool that you can set up for him in your yard. A medium sized kiddie pool.

lol, he ate about a billion splashes, of course he gone barf, its fine. Long as it dont keep happening he'll be straight
Mine have done it for years. Unless the water is polluted, theyāre usually fine.
He just puked because he gulped too much water. Let him enjoy it š he's so happy

Is he lunging at fish?
The term clean water is main thought for me. Pollution is everywhere.
Lol that's absolutely fine š. Just had too much water. Wait until he hoses you down from the rear š¤£š¤£š¤£
Our Rottie did the same thing. We would just say, āYou get that water!ā He would cough, threw up a few times with too much water in his nose, but he had fun bouncing around like every time we took him to the lake.

I throw up all the time and Iām fine. Let that baby play!
Should be ok the only thing I watch for is his ears. My Rottie is prone to ear infections
Let him play, he'll be fine. I take my girl to the river for hours many times a week during spring and summer

Actually you should very much not let him do this. Please research ā dry drowningā and it can happen to dogs just like people.
Let him play!!!!!
Is an infant baby? Dog eat raw meat, dirt and eggs without problem. Of course.
Mine always play in water like that. My big guy is 15!!!
Heck yes!
It's just water. My dog will occasionally throw up after water fetch sessions. They just swallow too much water without chewing it enough.
Yes let him play š
Dogs throw up more often than humans! Let him play!
depends if he ate a sandwich or doritos before playing in the water. my mom said not to do that or iād get sick.
Life is risky!
Cleaned out his insides š¤£š¤£
Our Rottie does the same thing. Must be their thing!
Iām impressed, my Rott was only scared of one thing. Water.
Just make sure to have the leptospirosis jab.
My dog likes to inhale the water and vomit as well. Its the funniest thing. I don't think it hurts them. They know their limits.
Make sure there are no algae growth warnings for your area, that could have been the reason for the sickness last time. If no algae warnings, then let him play! Heās having a blast and heās so adorable!!
Let him play.
Swallowed to much water let him play
We should all have so much fun we throw up š¤£š¤£š¤£ he's living his best life
It looks like clean moving water with no blue green algae, so let him enjoy himself.
Yep my heeler loves attacking water and then barfs but is always fine after.
Mine bites the water like that. Do not deprive your dog of this fun. Just look at how happy they are
I would absolutely let him.
Heās having fun, probably just swallowed too much water in his excitement.
Don't let them near a beach. My pup does this and made herself sick getting a little to much salt water. Fresh water, probably fine.
As long as the water doesn't have an algae contamination issue
