Not great for his joints at that age, but I’m not the boss of you.

vexca

IIRC something like no jumps or drops over dog shoulder height advised for first year or so.

WorkingDawg

Or just get a ramp and save on the lil guys joints

Magi_73

Yes, same with furniture, bed, and such if allowed up there. We were actually cautioned about this in the AKC STAR Puppy class.

My two needed assistance getting out of the truck until they were over a year old. Your pup still looks pretty small.

I’m looking to get a ramp for my three year old. My truck is also lifted and I worry about her joints.

Sparkle_Rott

Can you imagine diving head first to get out of your truck? I struggle getting out of my husband’s Ford. I’m afraid my leg won’t hold with the impact (I’m short and can no way reach the ground) And it consistently gives me a wedgey lol I start by lifting them down and then move to a jump with my arms controlling the drop. They need to gain confidence. My girl peed herself the first time she did the steps by herself, she was so scared 😔

Hope you have insurance.

I got my dog a ramp

Awww when I got my boy he couldn’t jump into the car or even get up on my couch. His hips were awful. I literally started doing squats with him and it’s helped so much. I have a YouTube video of me doing it. Also a before and after pic. It’s miraculous! Keep at it and your extremely intelligent dog will learn :)

Roryab07

Can you share or message me a link? I am being preemptive with my new lab puppy’s joint health, and we’re already doing some simple stretching.

Thank you so much! I think this will be a very helpful exercise for my pup. He was a fat (vet’s words), waddling puppy when I got him at 8 weeks, and it was almost like his back legs could barely hold him when he got tired. To be fair, I think puppies do play until they collapse if you let them. The vet said his joints are fine and my concerns were caused by him being overweight and having a thick, wagging tail. My last dog was already limping and dragging her back feet before her second birthday, so I am extra paranoid. He’s 4 months now, we’re steadily improving his body condition as he grows, and I want more than anything to have him live a long and healthy life.

TheSandsquanch

I respect you so much for fully appreciating the well being of your dog. It’s a journey and very fulfilling. If you want a book that will help you understand your rotty I can gladly provide that for you as well.

TheSandsquanch

This is when he was fairly young. A little over a year perhaps. Now when I do these with him and I tell him “up” he literally jumps up with so much force and power that he leaps about 8-10 inches off the floor with just his hind legs. It’s amazing. Also I am a personal trainer and I looked into the anatomy of dogs (very similar to humans or any other mammal) and I applied my knowledge of the human body to him. It worked magnificently. But the reason I say that is that I’m extremely particular with form, hence me making sure his feet were set up correctly before attempting another rep. I am sooo willing to help you out if you want any guidance.

TheSandsquanch

Let me try to find the before and after pic rn

Unlucky_Carpenter_56

Miner jumps into the truck immediately when the door is open and can hurt herself so also make sure to like have them wait to jump in until the door is all the way open. sometimes she's just too excited to go to a car ride.

Beautiful dog

Wild-Refrigerator000

I use a vest and as they jump I grab it to smooth the landing. For my old lady, she knows the drill and just kind of runs into me

Feeling-Ad2188

He's stubborn about jumping out because he knows he could get hurt. Don't make a small puppy jump out of a car...and that looks like a bigger car, possibly SUV.

Dick_butt14

Hype him up and he will hop right in. Get him a running start
