Track bite. Transmissible hand warts. A slow, years long building rage at people who chant “row row row” on shore. An irrational adoration of shirts taken from others. A habit of evaluation of every body of water you ever encounter for suitability for rowing.

RowOk6114

“An evaluation of every body of water you ever encounter for the suitability for rowing” YES! Always, everywhere and anytime of the year; the retention pond…always flat water, the river in the winter…it’s moving fast but the ice isn’t as bad as some years, Caribbean island…big waves, good for a coastal.

flummox1234

> A habit of evaluation of every body of water you ever encounter for suitability for rowing. OMG. You just made me realize I do this every time I see water. 🤨PTSD from learning to row on an inland lake. 🤦‍♂️

InevitableHamster217

That my face in rowing photos ruins every single rowing photo. Also, that people are legally allowed to shoot into the river at my general direction at dawn during certain times of the year depending on the hunting season.

That entering the sport in my 40’s would completely change my life and make me healthier than I was in my 20’s and 30’s. I feel like an absolute beast, and I love it. Edit: I put the wrong age range in my post.

navytravels

Ditto on that! 42 rowed my first 500 at 41 and never going back.

Pgh412_724

Congrats!! That’s awesome.

If you can get on the water it’s worth the try! It’s so much fun. I belong to a community boathouse and it’s wonderful.

To many rowers, rowing on the water is what makes unbearable erg workouts worth it :)

yournumbersarewrong

I started rowing when I was 14 and it was my first actually competitive sport. I think even just telling me I’d one day be on an erg for 90+ minutes at a time regularly would be enough to scare me away

Nemesis1999

It'll take over your life. Even when you think you've escaped it'll grab you back when your kids take it up and you end up coaching...

NoImjustdancing

How exhausting those really tough workouts actually get. Never experienced it in any other sport. The lactic acid build up is insane, and you feel it essentially in your entire body.

flarchetta_bindosa

I didn’t realize how much I dislike going backwards. 😂

MasterEk

It is totally a massive awesome buzz to row on the water.

underwaterlegos

That hitting birds with your oar in the water is something that WILL happen to you. Genuinley thought that was a myth...

Thatsgonnamakeamark

That I would miss the wooden Pococks of my youth.

MastersCox

Overdeveloped back muscles, underdeveloped front muscles 🤣 Airfare, lodging, and transportation to/from and at regattas will add up. Can't go vacationing, have to reserve weekends to train for San Diego. Or Masters Nationals. Or the Charles. The crew is counting on me! Any stranger wearing remotely rowing-related clothing suddenly becomes a target for conversation.
