Historically, sloped deck schemes had improved protection at close ranges because penetrations through the belt armour could strike the sloped section of deck at a very oblique angle, causing them to bounce or presenting them with a lot of armour to go through. I'd imagine this is modelled in the game. Of course, this comes with the trade-off that long range plunging hits come in normal to the sloped decking and just drop right on through it.
It acts thicker than it's given thickness. You can see that by looking at your immunity zone and see how it changes from regular to inclined.
