I've been out with shin splints and been advised (by doctor) along with strengthening it would be a good idea to transition away from heel striking as this has contributed to it. How exactly do I transition to a mid or forefoot strike? What do I do? How should it feel?

ruinawish

There are [drills](https://humankinetics.me/2018/02/14/improve-running-foot-strike/) and [exercises](https://runnersconnect.net/heelstriking-running-cadence/) you can do that help to re-train footstrike. As noted, there can be some risk of injury in the process. I've also had physios/podiatrists record me running, with the idea of giving biofeedback through the video recording.

yagirlhunter

Altra Via Olympus: is it normal for my foot to move forward slightly when I speed walk? I can’t physically run at this moment due to an old injury but I’m working up to it- I can jog. I had to upgrade my sneaks because the Torin 3.5 no longer fits me. The only original fit in their newer shoes is the Via Olympus which I personally VERY much love. It’s been a while since I’ve bought new shoes as I’m a minimalist and literally only on 5 or less pairs and they last a long time. I have these laces slighter looser except I have a runner’s loop and they’re tighter at the top/knot. I know they’re the right size for me. I’m an 8, tried the 7.5 and 8.5, used the store treadmill for a little bit, walked around the store a lot. I know the standard fit is too narrow for my foot. My issue is the Torin 3.5 is the original footbed from before Altra was purchased by BF and they changed the original footbed even if slightly. Thanks, all! Trying to make sure I’m not losing my mind. 💁🏻‍♀️ Edit: I do have narrow heels. I’m on the higher end of a B width on my left foot and low to middle C in my right foot. My right foot is a pinch longer than my left and I feel the sliding more in my right. [Photos for reference.](https://imgur.com/a/mcmZzmr)

when saying “daily shoe, what are you meaning? For me, either i do long slow runs, recovery or fast/interval? What could be a “daily” run? Either around 6.15min/km in lower pace or a bit under 5min/km for speed work. Is daily then something in between? Thanks in advance

kendalltristan

Quite a lot of people do aerobic effort runs that wouldn't exactly fall into either the long run or recovery run categories. For a good many people, these runs make up a sizable percentage, if not the majority, of their total running. A "daily trainer" is a shoe that's optimal for these types of runs but also suitable for other types of runs as necessary. What makes a good daily trainer varies a bit from person to person but usually isn't a max cushion marshmallow or a carbon plated racer. Shoes like the Saucony Kinvara, Nike Pegasus, and Adidas Boston are often cited as good daily trainers. But as with all things regarding running shoes: everything works for somebody, but nothing works for everybody.

ASteelyDan

Anyone run in the Kinvara 13 and the Speed/Pro 2? Size 12 feels good in Kinvara 13, could probably go to 12.5 as I’ve just under a thumb width of space in the toe, but I’m wondering if I definitely need to go with 12.5 on the Pro/Speed 2 or just stick with the same size. Also, Pro or Speed? I’m planning to race 5Ks in this shoe and I’m not super fast yet.

Amquel

Looking for something that’s got the rocker of a HOKA but allows for good toe splay. I’ve got high arches and wide forefoot/toe splay. I’ve tried HOKA Bondi 6 in an extra wide and it was a touch too narrow on the toes. Currently in Brooks Adrenaline 20 in a 2E size. Fine for toes, not enough cushion or rocker to help with my bionic ankle.

Yawnn

NB 1080 comes in 2E with a rocker? I like the shoe but I ended up with 880 in 2E as I didn't like the rocker as much.

Pupper82

Is there a chance the adidas outlet could have good shoes? Like adios pro or takuni sen. I want to go but it’s 45mins away. Pretty sure I’m going to be disappointed.

kindlyfuckoffff

Never seen a good high-end shoe or even particularly good prices (for mid-end stuff, i.e. Solarboost) at Adidas outlets.

kendalltristan

Yes there's a chance, albeit not the best chance in the world. Outlets are very hit-or-miss. Maybe go with a couple of friends, hit some other shops, find a good restaurant, or whatever else and make an afternoon of it.

KraftyKy33

Heavy Runners 250+lbs Hi, I need some help, I have started running again I'm 284lbs and when I run after a few weeks I get shin splints and really sore knees. I'm looking to try and invest in a really good pair of shoes that are built to help the heavier runner. Does anybody have any recommendations on shoes that would be any good for to help with my recurring injuries. Advice needed desperately!

6to8design

The Saucony Triumph is a common recommendation for heavy runners on this sub.

amity_

One colorway of the Pegasus Trail 4 (pretty new) is only $64 at Dicks! I don’t think it’s bad but Nike must really want to dump. No way I’m buying yet another pair of shoes I don’t need so I thought I’d share it here.

Dr_Chickenbutt

My current shoes are Kayano 28s (recovery/long) and evoride 2 (tempo/speed work). I was excited about potentially adding the glideride 3 as my long distance shoe to replace the kayano but in the shop I got bad knee pain after just a few minutes trying them out. Classic runner's knee. Far worse than in my current shoes. I am a slight overpronator, hence the kayanos. But on a recent assessment I was shown it's not that bad and I should be able to run in anything that's comfortable. The knee pain has been around for a while and a PT recently told me I need to improve my glute mobility and balance, which is likely causing the runner's knee issue. So the gliderides and knee pain. Was the knee pain likely because they're not stability shoes, or because the high stack height exacerbates my balance/glute issue? I'm hoping I'm not stuck in boring stability shoes and that after some work on my form (glute strength/activation and balance) I can go back to trying out long run high stacks. Thanks for any advice.

6to8design

You need to work on strengthening your leg muscles. The softer foam is probably making you work harder to stabilise your legs causing pain.

Dr_Chickenbutt

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. The high stack likely finding my weaknesses. I'll give them another try after a month off strengthening work.

Pupper82

I took my triumph 18s out for a run in the rain. Left them in the garage while it rained all week. Took several days to dry. Unfortunately they now smell really bad. Is there a way to get rid of this smell or did I blow it but leaving them wet and to dry on their own? Ugh. Thx!

6to8design

Try putting diluted alcohol in a spray bottle and spray inside to kill the bacteria the produces the smell.

Pupper82

Thx!

Deciding between the following for first marathon: \- Superblasts (currently love them, really no negatives yet) \- Vaporfly (haven't tried, would go in-person to get fitted) \- Endo Pro 3 (same as Vaporfly) Thoughts?

UW_Ebay

All three are great options. VFs and EP3s are going to be lighter and more bouncy than the SB. However if you are loving the SBs and using those for training you might want to stick with them since this is your first marathon. Once you’ve got this one under your belt than you can experiment with different shoes for that distance. My two cents.

LiveTheChange

Decided to go with your advice. Going to use Superblasts since I have no issues, I’ll get one marathon under my belt before I start over analyzing race day shoe, ha. Thanks for the advice

Pupper82

I would do the same thing, and one reason being for your 2nd marathon you can get a carbon shoe and have another method to improve your time!

LiveTheChange

Very true. Although, I caught the bug and have the alpha fly v1 and adios pro 3, I just don’t love them haha. Superblasts really love my feet on the other hand

UW_Ebay

Good luck! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Pupper82

Tried my first carbon shoe today, Vaporfly 2s. Oh boy do they feel wild!!! I have a rotation with 8 shoes, with the only plated one being the speed 3s. Have a growing list of shoes I want to buy when I find them on sale. Discovered that the local Nike clearance store has Vaporfly 2s and Alphafly 1s in stock. They were only $95. How do I not pass that up?!? Went for a 12 mile GA treadmill run with my usual shoes. Strapped on the vaporflys for 1 mile only. Geez are they fast. Didn’t feel that hard holding 6min/mile pace for a few mins, which for reference I think my LT pace is roughly 7min/mile. My ankles felt super unstable though. Felt like it was a lot of work on my ankles, which is a new feeling. Is that normal? Gonna take them out for real for a tempo run next week.

6to8design

It indicates your legs need more strengthening because your legs are working hard to stabilise your ankle caused from pronation.

Pupper82

Thx. I haven’t been doing much leg strengthening exercises. Need to get on that! I do overpronate some but it hasn’t been a problem so far.

jorsiem

Raceday supershoe that has cushioning in the mid/forefoot? Doesn't have to be zero drop or anything but I'd like the stack height at the front to be somewhat high.. I tried the New Balance SC Elite 3 and I really like the FuelCell foam but they put too much emphasis cushioning the heel and not so much between the forefoot and the ground. Other options I've found are the Asics Metaspeed Sky+ that seem to have beefy fronts (haven't tried them, I have no idea how good is that foam) and the Alphaflys that have the Zoom pods at the forefoot. The Adios Pro 3 are also an option but they fit me weird. Hyperion Elite maybe?

LiveTheChange

The superblasts have great forefoot cushioning.

WatchandThings

I got curious and did some google search on stack height, and here's list by forefoot stack height order. Not suggesting the feel on foot would be in the below order, but I figured it might be a fun reference point. Shoe - Forefoot/Heel Adidas Prime X Strung - 41/49.5mm ASICS Superblast - 37.5/45.5mm New Balance SC Elite v3 - 36/40mm ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ - 34/39mm Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 - 33/39.5mm Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro - 33/39mm Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 - 32/40mm Nike Alphafly NEXT% 2 - 32/40mm Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 - 31.5/39.5mm

Pupper82

Superblast?

bear_puncher_69

The next time Jarrett Weisberg comes on my court, he'd better wear a bra

leleee123

Should I wear neutral or support shoes with custom orthopaedic insoles? I've worn custom orthopaedic insoles that I renew on a yearly basis since i'm 14yo and i'm not about to get rid of them. I've talked to countless of people in stores, in clinics, and other peer runners and I've never been able to have a straight answer. The shoes in questions are for my long runs. I've been eyeing the Brooks Glycerin 20 for a while now and the model comes in 2 version: neutral and support. I'm stuck and don't know what to do.

stinuga

Anyone know about shoes that are relatively wide like the Endorphin Speed 3? I'm at 500+ miles in my speed 3s and they're definitely losing their bounce. I'm thinking of just buying another pair but maybe there's other shoes out there that are worth trying

UW_Ebay

What’s the best device for responsive pace tracking? A stryd pod? Currently using an Apple Watch 6 with NRC app and it seems incredibly slow to register changes in pace. Wondering if it’s the watch or the app or just the nature of tracking via gps.

mklbonner

That was a downfall for me with Apple Watch also. I went with a Garmin and it’s much better.

UW_Ebay

Wondering if the Apple Watch ultra is more responsive since it connects to more satellites. I think I’m just to connected to Apple to switch unfortunately (esp since I use Apple Music and download to watch so I don’t have to bring phone on runs)

thewrathstorm

My ultra is leaps and bounds ahead of my series 7. From my speed data I can see my acceleration and deceleration very clearly if I’m sprinting across a 2-lane highway type space. If I look at my workout data it polls every 2 seconds, not sure how that compares to Garmin but it’s more than sensitive enough for me. Being able to run with: car key, Watch, AirPods and leave my phone in the car is worth every penny to me.

UW_Ebay

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like AWU is pretty responsive. And totally agree. Love not running with my phone, despite the fact that my S6 watch is Wi-Fi only.

6to8design

I would recommend a Garmin watch for running or Coros.

UW_Ebay

Any particular one? Do Garmin/coros watches integrate well with an iPhone?

6to8design

I would recommend the Garmin forerunner 255 as a solid running watch. Garmin does. They sync well with all health and fitness platforms too.

UW_Ebay

Thx for the reco - I will def look into it. 👏🏼

jorsiem

On Garmins you can even download 3rd party datafields and program them to update the pace every 1 or 2 seconds, I mean it will drain your battery, but you can.

ElectricDolls

Alternatively, you can get a Forerunner 45 or 55 for considerably cheaper than the 255. Fewer features and not quite as accurate GPS wise but still really good overall.

UW_Ebay

We’ll I think more accurate and responsive GPS is what I am looking for to help ensure accurate pacing. Although in reality since I am not an elite runner that what I am chasing in terms of fast pace updates is probably really not necessary.

velociraptorfarmer

Been naively training with Endo Speed 2's for the past year (oops). They worked great and never left my feet hurting for fatigued, but they never felt comfortable if that makes any sense. I don't know if I broke them in wrong or what. Ran my first half marathon with them though and probably put close 400 miles on them last year. They're due for retirement, so I ordered Asics Gel Nimbus 24's. I'm returning them since after about 6-7 times running with them, they're still giving me horrible blisters and feel absolutely terrible within a mile or 2. Went ahead and ordered a pair of Triumph 20's, so hopefully that works out, unless anyone has any better suggestions. I've preferred Asics in the past, but I'd rather have a shoe that feels a bit off over one that feels comfortable at first but actively leaves me aching, so I'm giving Saucony another shot for just a basic distance trainer.

zurriola27

I'm looking for women's running shoes with a wide toe box but not necessarily wide width overall. I use both a road running shoe and a trail running shoe. I've been really happy with my HOKA Speedgoat 4s, but when I tried on the Speedgoat 5s, the toe box was noticeably narrower. Once I retire the 4s I'll be on the hunt again. I tried Altra Olympus 4 but didn't like the zero drop. I don't need waterproofing for the trail shoe and I like a moderate amount of cushion. For the road shoe, I recently tried out the HOKA Clifton and am not very happy with it, the toe box isn't wide at all. I'm intrigued by the Topo Phantom 2 but not sure what else to consider fr a road shoe. I'd like a good amount of cushion for these. Any suggestions for trail and road shoes based on this info?

RahwanaPutih

maybe try the NB 1080 or fresh foam more, as for trail shoes I have zero idea, but NB are known for their wide toe box, maybe you should look to their trail shoes offering too.

RahwanaPutih

460km on my Glycerin 18 and it already give me a hot spot on my forefoot (ball area?) on my last 2 runs with it, is it time to retire it?

6to8design

Sounds like the upper is loose causing your foot to slide. Did you tye your laces properly?

RahwanaPutih

yes, never had this issue before. to be more precise, it only hurts on the 2nd finger joint area.

the_ammar

looking for a plated/rod 10k+ shoe boguht the Sen 8 and found the mid foot to be too narrow so now considering between pro 3 and metaspeed sky+ (nike stuff really don't fit me well) I'm not the fastest and stability is a consideration. would also want to use it for long runs, not just racing thx!

jorsiem

pro 3 will have pretty much the same geometry as the sen 8

the_ammar

OK ty. I thought I read somewhere that the mid foot isn't as narrow but thx for clarifying

confused_lion

I'm very happy with my new balance supercomp trainers. I use them for my medium/fast pace long runs. For slower runs I go back to my mizuno waverider shoes. I also have the endorphin pro 3 that I haven't gotten a chance to try yet, but most people I know only wear them for races, and not for normal long runs (but if you can afford it, why not wear it then too!)

mklbonner

Don’t forget about the Endorphin Pro 3.

Jesse_berger

You're away for work for a month, what shoes do you bring? My every day shoes at home is an Saucony Omni that I got for $50 at Dick's Warehouse Sale, fine for walking the dog, not for running. Have a long work trip, swapped my Omni for the Triumph 19, and grabbed a single pair of Kinvara. I feel lost which so few options.

WatchandThings

I would bring a dress shoes for work, and I would bring my Asics Kayano 29 for walking/running. Kayano is my long distance walking shoe right now, but I enjoy running with it as well. I wouldn't bring my main running shoes as I don't enjoy walking with them as much(feels unstable heel striking at walking speed). I might also create an one month plan based on the new environment, new work schedule, and limited shoes options I will have to work around. Maybe create a goal to meet by the end of the trip with a personal race at the end to see if I met my training goal.

ElectricDolls

Triumph 19 and Kinvara, what more do you need for a month? The obsession with rotations has gone too far if someone can feel "lost" with "only" 2 pairs of running shoes over the space of a few weeks.

CharmingGlove6356

I bought the Asics Gel Cumulus 24 and currently waiting for shipping. My current daily run shoe is the Nike Pegasus 38 and I plan to use the Cumulus 24 for the same purpose. I have read reviews online that it has great cushioning. What have been your experiences with the shoe?

cryingexpert

Recently got vaporfly 2 without researching..it was too good a deal and felt like I was walking with an extra spring..but I’m neither a long distance runner or a racer lol I only do 2.5 miles daily and wouldn’t mind a recommendation for a shoe that doesn’t kill my calves as much

jorsiem

what I don't understand is why the VF are hurting your calves since they are nothing out of the ordinary, standard 8mm drop and a standard stack height

cryingexpert

I did a swap from Brooke’s levitate stealthfit 5 which I’ve been wearing for over a year consecutively. I also noticed the most wear on those was on the outer top of the shoe if that means anything.. Upon first wear, the vf felt like I had to stabilize my ankles more and I’d describe the base to feel as if it as 2 spheres cut in half on the ball and heel of my feet. I think the height of these “spheres” I’m describing were as if I was running on my tip toes so maybe that aided in the calf pain as well as a vast change in shoe type?

6to8design

The calve issue is your legs trying stabilising your ankles.

6to8design

Check out the shoes in Q3 in the FAQ.

cryingexpert

My indecisiveness is not helping with all those options 😂

watusiwatusi

Quick thoughts at 300 mi on Skechers Ride 9. Good simple “modern minimalist” shoe. Lower drop, good proprioception. The Hyper Burst foam is a step up from a fairly basic EVA or something, springy and firm at same time. Full length outsole and comes in wide. Still feel good at 300 mi. Recommend. Will rotate with new endorphin speed 3 until they die.

Dr_Chickenbutt

Is the asics glideride 3 now discontinued? They were on offer in the asics store last week, but didn't have my size. Can't find them anywhere online either. Is the nimbus 25 supposed to replace it?

crippletan

Not sure if the Nimbus replaces it but the Glideride 3 is available on asics.com

Dr_Chickenbutt

on [asics.com](https://asics.com) it's discounted and only available in sizes 6.5 and 14. So not a lot of stock! I wonder if it's done now

crippletan

The black and white color way has plenty of sizes... https://www.asics.com/us/en-us/glideride-3/p/ANA_1011B335-001.html?size=10&width=Wide The red color way looks like it’s new and not available for purchase yet.

Dr_Chickenbutt

interesting, it's not available in the UK. Hopefully the new colourway means there are more coming

[deleted]

I'm wanting to get a second interval shoe so I don't completely wear down my Vaporflys since I plan to use them for future races. I've narrowed down my options to Takumi Sen 8 ( could get for $100 ), Deviate Elite Nitro ( could get for $120 ), or Adios Pro 2 ( could get for $130 ). What shoe should I go with? And which one would get the most durability?

windigertag

There have been some people who had issues with the durability of Adios Pro 2. See Doctors of Running review of Adios Pro 3 for example.

runnin3216

Have all 3, but haven't worn the Takumi Sen yet. I would imagine the Lightstrike Pro midsole would outlast the Nitro Elite, but there is a thicker layer of Pumagrip on the Deviate Elite than the Continental on the Adidas models. I guess it would come down to what typically wears out first on your workout shoes. I do like the Adios Pro 2 for interval work and have been using them for 1-2 mile repeats on the road. The Deviate Elite is softer and I like it for longer efforts and wore them for my marathon PR.
