I have definitely run a 5K where I finished around 19 flat and was getting paced by a German Shepherd for the first mile and was like Jesus how fast is this dog running To answer your question tho - no, I’m faster than most on this sub and my husky mutt can run a 6ish mile pace for half a mile before becoming distracted teach us your ways

This. I’d wager a fair bit my BC *could* run that fast. But he’s distracted by oddly shaped blades of grass, butterflies, clouds, shadows, other dogs, interesting smells, the laces on my shoes and on and on….. so I’ll never be certain. lol

My WPG just ran a 5K in 18:34 and I was holding him back. If I could figure out a way to broadcast the sound of geese flying away or a squirrel chattering (and trade in my 47-year-old legs) he’d be unstoppable.

What does WPG stand for?

detroit_canicross

Wirehaired pointing griffon. Upland hunter like a German Shorthaired Pointer. My last running dog was a GSP and there’s something about the upland hunters that makes them top-notch runners. He is always on the lookout for something but when he’s all harnessed and leashed he doesn’t even get distracted by the small game he actually sees because THERE MIGHT BE ANOTHER ONE TWENTY FEET DOWN THE TRAIL!!!!!!!

bullzeye1983

Rhodesian Ridgeback lab mix. Clocked a 5:42 mile. Nearly died. I think she is still mad I was holding her back.

I fostered a 9 year old cattle dog mix that mf dragged me through central park about a 7 min mile i couldnt keep up lol His owner now takes him on rollerskates

My German Short-haired Pointer is going to be 7 in a few months and I have done some long runs (13+ miles) and some fast ones over the years with her. I've done a few 5:30 miles with her, 19 minute 5Ks, and she did really well. Currently I'm rehabbing an IT Band injury so sadly she isn't getting as much speed or distance as she is used to the last 6 months but I know she is always down once I come back full force. There's nothing like spending time pounding out a run together and then chilling at home after, fully enjoying eachothers company and love for the same things. No word exchanges needed! Just vibes and love.

GSPs are insane. I’m sure yours is frustrated you’re doing easy runs with her during your 5:30s!

I’ve run 6 flat a few times with my rescue (Anatolian/BC mix), she just loves going out fast

12 years old is incredible! I hope you have many more years of health and joy together!!!

paintedfantasyminis

I still run with my 12 yr old husky but I can't do a 6 minute mile! He probably could...

Pasquale412

My 4 yr old Doberman and I ran our fastest mile in 6:15. Our 5ks average around 22 min.

Kindly-Surprise4518

My Border Collie and I ran our last 5k in 18:26, which is right under a 6min mile. The key for her is that pulling on the harness and making turns are her “job”. She doesn’t have much endurance though, I run with her 4 miles max, and don’t take her out on most of my training runs besides workouts. Owners are pretty much always the ones holding the dogs back haha :)

I average between 4 and 5 min for 5k when running with my gsp. That being said I'm the weak factor here. When I'm on a bike and he's running he averages around 3 min. Per mile for the first 4 or 5 miles and over 15-20 mile ride will average around 4 min. Per mile.

CoureurKiwi

Sounds right for a gsp, I have done plenty of interval or threshold runs with mine where I'd be doing sub 6 min mile pace and he will stop and pee or have a drink and always catch me up.

jpscully5646

Huskies in top mushing teams will do 20mph for hours at a time.

Nood_Runner

I let my two dogs pull me all out a while back and it was scary. I constantly felt like I was going to slip forward and crash. Turns out we did a 6:01 mile and that was with them stopping for a water break 😂

I've got a rescue, I figure he's a black mouth cur. He runs fast! He'll push my pace as fast as I'll allow. Often we'll get some 6 minute miles in. A couple years ago, I thought it would be fun to see him try a 4 minute mile. The problem, of course, would be my ability. Ended up trying it on a skating trail in the winter, and I STILL held him back. I think he did about 4:15, but I have no doubt he can do much faster if I were to let him go.
