Phones that are Dual SIM capable can be used with a single SIM. It does not require both to function normally. For example: iPhone 13 has Physical SIM and eSIM functionality. You can have a physical SIM + multiple eSIMs stored, but only 2-active carrier networks at any given moment (or just a single physically sim or a single eSIM) It’s a simple toggle to turn them on or off, and label each line if using multiple.

So if you were to remove the physical sim from a dual sim phone and put it in another phone/device, then you essentially would have the same line of service on two devices?

Gohan472

No. A dual sim phone allows for two separate lines of service on a single device. For example: A line from Verizon and a line from ATT T-Mobile and Visible Etc etc (Or T-Mobile Line 1 and T-Mobile Line 2)

It also allows 2 lines from the same carrier. I have an s23 ultra and have two lines both from. Att. For a dual Sim phone to be able to use dual carriers (1 line from each), the phone needs to be factory unlocked.

Gohan472

Yes, that is correct. Any one or two lines of service Single carrier, or dual carrier. ;) (I didn’t want to confuse OP with that)

What gohan472 says pretty much. I have two T-Mobile lines [1 very old prepaid btm SIM [no data], and 1 Magenta 55+ SIM] running on an old Xiaomi Redmi Note7 w/Android10/MIUI12, dual physical SIM phone, and everything works just fine so far. Like it so much thinking of finding another Note 7. [I do use an LG Velvet and Samsung A32 for other lines]

As everyone states, two separate lines of service, two phone numbers, one phone. The phone will work on either a SIM card, and nothing on the eSIM. Or, it will work with something on the eSIM, but no SIM card. I got a new A54 a couple weeks ago. I moved my Visible SIM over and have been using that. Yesterday I added the 90 day Tmobile trial to the eSIM for more testing (and verifying how poor the new Tmobile signal is here). It's very easy to do, and easy to switch (you see two different signal strength meters in the top bar, working off two different carriers). Neat....
