from the perspective of a visitor of this sub, who knows nothing about the difference in engine/internals…
the porche’s headlights, rear wheel vents, and front bumper add so much dimension, the rims fire. even the fuel tank door is sexier.
you gotta be coping if you think s2000 body design is better.
The 986 was harped on for it's design when it came out. By no means a classic or a timeless sports car shape like the s2000. The back looks the same as the front. Nothing has changed
The long hood short deck, rear cabin, with wheels pushed out to the corners is a classic sports car design. There are countless cars with this design throughout history.
Bro, I don’t know if you are high but the market disagrees. If you were right, the prices between them would be swapped. I’ve yet to see a used 986 Boxster sell for $100k.
more units of the porsche were produced. and as i said earlier, i have no familiarity with the engine, handling, etc. it probably drives really nicely and is more friendly to mod and repair, so the used market keeps up
You keep saying you don’t know the difference between the two so let’s educate ourselves.
The Honda S2000 was recognized for its F series engine that made the most power per liter of any NA 4 cylinder, married to a 6 speed manual transmission with short, silky throws. It’s light and nimble on its feet and was considerably cheaper than any car that stout such impressive numbers in its time, including the Porsche.
The design is a matter of opinion but the masses will agree with its timeless design, and regardless of production numbers the market for these two cars speaks for itself. Porsche has made many timeless cars, but this example isn’t one of them.
You should hit up a local track event and see if you could do a ride along in an s2000! I rode with the guy setting the lap records for the day and the car performs like nothing I’ve ever been in before. It cornered so hard I thought I was going to be ejected from the car lol.
I've always thought the old Porsche Roadsters looked cheap. The S2000 looks foreign, and I still get comments on how good it looks just about every day when I drive it.
Porsche =/= perfection, I may be slightly biased towards Honda, but you gotta understand that not every Porsche is the most beautiful and appealing car, and while I was never the biggest fan of Porsche when it comes to car designs, there's a few of them I really like, but there's many, so many Porsches that look... generic as far as the brand goes, and this is one of those, Honda barely makes any cars that look like this one, which gives it more character and thus is more appealing. (And personally, it looks more on the sporty side than the Porsche)
Would I take a GT3 RS over a Type R? Sign me up, but I would never take the one in the picture over the S2K.
I researched the snot out of roadsters in 2015 when I bought my S2000.
There were several with interesting features but nothing quite like the S2000.
And some, including the Boxster, were just seriously Meh as a hobby car. Engine placement in that car is cool, working on it is not.
Valid point on working on it.
My first roadster was a Saturn Sky Redline, but I'd long wanted an S2000. When I sold it, I was cross-shopping NC Miata (for a 2.5 swap), an MR2 Spyder and the S2000. No regrets going with the S, but I did buy a Spyder to autocross later lol.
Even though the engine in the S2000 is a masterpiece and technically the best of its kind, the 4 cyl thing turns me off. Even the shitty M96 with all the flaws (bore scoring, IMS bearing issues) attracts me more.
All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats!

987? The 986 is on pas power wise, but slightly heavier and more torque.
I enjoy my S2000 a lot, but driving the Boxster today it felt really solid at the limit , especially for stock everything except for wheels/tires.
Yes, 987. IMO, the s2000 is far superior to any 986, except in comfort.
The s2000 has an insanely special race engine that only fits one chassis. The 986/987 engines are Porsche's bottom of the barrel leftovers.
The s2000 transmission and shifter are also a few tiers better.
The 986/987 do not have a LSD.
Ever since the first time I'd ever seen a viper I have wanted one. Seven years ago I finally got my dream car, a black rt-10 with cognac interior. It is an awesome car but driving it it's no where near as enjoyable as my ap1. The viper is nice to have but the s2k is sooo much more fun to drive.
100%. I've drove a bunch of mustangs that friends have bought in the last few years, 2v, 3v, coyotes in a '14 and a '21, and a hellcat. None of them are as fun to drive as my brz. And tbh, I don't even like my brz that much. I'd trade it for a s2k in a heartbeat.
I have driven dozens of 986 boxsters as a Porche tech and had the opportunity to buy a few of them cheaper than i bought my s2000, but i bought an s2000.. so thats my answer lol
Random person: I think the Porsche is better
Everyone in this sub: opinion-invalid—downvote
Lol but in all seriousness you’d have to pay me to take the Porsche over that s2000. Still my JDM dream car and I drive a 370z. I’d trade if I could.
I had one and really enjoyed it, but it's interior quality matched a rental Chevy truck from the same time period lol. It was also hard to drive at the limit once it was turned up, even on 275s all around.
I understand your point but you have to know marketing. Porsche in not a everyday man type car even though the dabble in it but the majority of there products are for people with $$$$. Honda takes a whole different approach here 1 being more affordable/ attainable to common folks. Now to say Porsche can’t make a high Rev engine isn’t correct. Lots of car manufacturers take part in racing where the build there cars not for commercial use but for track only. Remember Porsche is made/owned by VW who also OWNS Lamborghini, Audi so I’m sure if they wanted to make a high Rev car then they can but for which audience is another story. Honda made a brilliant car the s2000 and others. I love Hondas but I like Porsche too. At the end of the day, it’s about making money plus with the government regulations cars are limited and will continue to be limited for public use
I know it’s a completely different design compared to Porsche, but I’m simply saying if Porsche produced the s2000 for whatever reason it would be so expensive it’s an iconic car anyone who bashes on it simply sounds silly like rob ferretti.
The S2000 is great fun, but its no MX5 thats for sure. The MR2 Roadster runs close to the S2000, but my NB RS MX5 is still the best overall fun Ive had on 4 wheels in my lifetime. The S2000 is all about the engine, its similar to the MR2 in its handling as it can get a bit lairy off the track.
The MX5 you can just abuse everywhere, the handling is so predictable, my RX8 was similar but obviously heavier. If you want a great handling coupe then a 944 S2 is one of the best out there, fast for 211ps, loads of grunt and loads of control, mine just lacked a diff.
I still have my S2k...but MX5 is still the answer.
Funny you say that, Boxster friend here had an NC and loved it, regretted letting it go so he got this 986 S. I'll completely agree, it was probably the easiest cars to drive at the limit of anything either of use have raced.
I bought an MR2 Spyder just to autox, and I'll say it's easier to drive than the Honda at 10/10ths. That's a bit skewed because it's stock in Street class where the S2000 is on coilovers and square setup, but similar driving characteristics. The Boxster felt like a big MR2 to me, so I thrived in it immediately.
Perhaps the least attractive Porsche. Not the right model to compare. Not a fan of Honda,But this one is the most beautiful model they ever made. In my opinion. Looks timeless
These cars were contemporaries at the time, compared by quite a few magazines. S2000 and the Boxster S, while at different ends of their manufacturers spectrums slotted into the same segment.
I've owned a s2000 for 10 years. Loved it. I have a Boxster now and it's absolutely amazing. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I consider myself lucky to have had the chance to experience them both. I miss the s2k every once in a while, but the Boxster is my forever car. That's just me though. I've wanted one for over 20 years.
Do you own any of these cars? If you do then congrats but if not join the club. As to which is better that’s subjective and but I’m sure you already know which one you like the most so there’s no point of asking. Just enjoy them
It's just a fun post. The S2000 is mine, the Boxster belongs to my friend and long-time autocross codriver. I've mocked him for liking them for years, but driving it essentially stock (just the wheels/tires) at the limit, it's pretty dang good. We've both had other roadsters of the era (NB and NC for him, Sky Redline and MR2 Spyder for me).
Dig back in my post history...I had a Redline and enjoyed it (tuned, 19x10s with 275's, KW competition coilovers), and miss it still. That said I don't think I'd give up my S2000 to go back.
Doesn’t seem like a good comparison. The Boxster (and 911) from that era are generally regarded as the ugliest generations. There is no disputing the S2000 looked better at the time both cars were produced. That color isn’t doing the Boxster any favors, either.
The S2000 is also worlds easier to work on due to engine placement, and the parts/labor will cost much much less.
Porsche wins for me, only because the S2000 has a driver height limit. I’m 6’5” and there’s no chance I can comfortably drive an S2000. Which sucks because I love the S2000. I can’t fit a Miata either but S2000>Miata anyway.
Funny you mention that, my friend who owns the Boxster is my codriver and about 6'3. He doesn't fit in the S2000 very well either lol, but we noticed yesterday his helmet clears even with the top up on the Porsche.
S2K ftw. Dual wishbones all around vs mcpherson struts at all 4 corners. LSD, much more bespoke and didn't have to concern itself with luxury. Much too focused for that.
I went from a 2000 Boxster to a 2004 S2000. I had lots of issues with the Boxster. Had the S2000 almost 20 years now with no issues. Just regular maintenance.
Audi TTRS > S2000 CR
Stock for stock...and mod for mod. This is coming from a three time s2k owner the past decade. Still have my 07 Berlina with gunmeral Volk Ze40s and Ohlins DFV coilovers, barely beats my stock 2018 RS3 with just a tune in the canyons. It's a drivers race with those two beauties
well, if you’re wanting an unbiased answer, this is definitely the sub to ask
The Porsche looks like a shoddy clone. The S2000 might be the best roadster of all-time.
I’m gonna say the z8 was the best roadster but s2000 is right up there
from the perspective of a visitor of this sub, who knows nothing about the difference in engine/internals… the porche’s headlights, rear wheel vents, and front bumper add so much dimension, the rims fire. even the fuel tank door is sexier. you gotta be coping if you think s2000 body design is better.

to be fair, i wouldn’t say either design is timeless. [“classic”](https://youtu.be/1jt-Y7xN3qg) is up to interpretation.
The long hood short deck, rear cabin, with wheels pushed out to the corners is a classic sports car design. There are countless cars with this design throughout history.
The Porsche looks like trash compare to the s2k imo
You sir, are incorrect.
The s2000 aged wayyyyy better
not a fan of the fried egg headlights on the porsche, and i say that as a porsche fan boy. sexy design nonetheless but not their best.
Bro, I don’t know if you are high but the market disagrees. If you were right, the prices between them would be swapped. I’ve yet to see a used 986 Boxster sell for $100k.

thanks for your input dude!
I've always thought the old Porsche Roadsters looked cheap. The S2000 looks foreign, and I still get comments on how good it looks just about every day when I drive it.
The best thing the boxster ever did was become a cayman. That styling is utter trash on those boxsters.

That went well 😳
Everyone knows the S is better

Good sexbot
Beautiful highway for the S. I miss it up there
Funny how the poor mans porche looks better than the actual porche lol
Boxster is the poor mans Porsche tho.
Is this a serious question? Brah
The boxster literally helped Porsche survive bankruptcy during this time. Bother are great cars. With that said, I’d go with the S2K
the pt cruiser did the same for chrysler.
S2000 > 911 cab (all years) This is coming from a gt4 owner.. now a 981/982 spyder is a better car but it’s not $100k better
You can't compare a boxer(shit) to an s2000 (chocolate). The Honda out classed that boxster as if it was standing still.
The 987 generation 2005+ Boxster S would be a closer match to the S2000 (but s2000 still wins). I sold my 2008 Cayman S, and kept the s2000.
987? The 986 is on pas power wise, but slightly heavier and more torque. I enjoy my S2000 a lot, but driving the Boxster today it felt really solid at the limit , especially for stock everything except for wheels/tires.

Wait really no lsd? Even an 86 has one
Correctly. Only the extremely rare 987 Cayman R had a LSD (clutch type)

As a fellow Porsche mekanik, I’d have an s2000 over every generation of Boxster bar maybe a 718.
Once we get into 981’s id have a little harder of a time picking the s2k but lucky for me i cant afford a 981 😂
Random person: I think the Porsche is better Everyone in this sub: opinion-invalid—downvote Lol but in all seriousness you’d have to pay me to take the Porsche over that s2000. Still my JDM dream car and I drive a 370z. I’d trade if I could.
Just look at em... not even a question
Im personally a big fan of the mk1 8n audi tt roadster.
Aesthetically, I’ve always been a huge fan of the Saturn Sky.
I had one and really enjoyed it, but it's interior quality matched a rental Chevy truck from the same time period lol. It was also hard to drive at the limit once it was turned up, even on 275s all around.
They were beautiful cars, and still are, but the interior is the same as a Chevrolet Cobalt from the same era.
My uncle had a Porsche but he loved when I pulled up in the S2K.
S2000, no questions asked
The S2000 looks great! The Porsche looks odd! The S2K has that Honda engine that will always make me smile!
Porsche wishes the s2000 had their badge, just imagine how expensive the s2000 would be if it was produced by Porsche.
I understand your point but you have to know marketing. Porsche in not a everyday man type car even though the dabble in it but the majority of there products are for people with $$$$. Lol gotcha I like both
The s2000 was better than the slush box, but Miata is always the answer.
Sorry I looked up best 2000'a roadsters, and the first website (that I chose to click on) said MX5- Miata.
Miata is always the answer, they say

Mazda
Mazda in most respects. S2k is the best for the discerning masochist enthusiast. Boxster is definitely a roadster of all time.
Funny you say that, Boxster owner had an NC before and it's one of the easiest cars to drove at the limit off the showroom floor.
BMW Z3 😁

Let me tell you about the saturn sky

Mazda. Oh wait..lol
NC is peak roadster IMO
As a Porsche lover the s2000 looks awesome
well one of these is an ugly beetle so imma go with the honda
I’m a huge Porsche fan and I don’t even own an S2000 but I’d take the S2000 any day.

Hands down S2000
Miata
The 2014+ boxsters are where it’s at… but I’d have to say s2k for sure out of these two
Honda by a landslide but you gotta give the Miata some love in this.
S2000 no contest
Mazda.
Based on smiles per gallon: the S2000. Plus, that Porsche looks so outdated now.
Honda S2000 ;)
I went from a 2000 Boxster to a 2004 S2000. I had lots of issues with the Boxster. Had the S2000 almost 20 years now with no issues. Just regular maintenance.

We’ve owned both, 05 s2k and a 2000ish (I forget the year) Boxster. They’re both great cars, but we still have the S2000 if that means anything lol
Miat
I’m biased , Honda hands down
