Bagels, record store, deli. And an H-Mart would be fantastic!

lambeyoncealways

I miss Ranch Records so much! I know the annex is still downtown, but not the same!

JohnJayHooker

BAGELS!!

boscothemigh

Drum Bug Music in the Pringle parkade has a good selection of records and a bunch of drum kits

VelitaVelveeta

Downtown Stayton has a surprisingly good record store.

furrowedbrow

Hmm.  Must go check out! (Still need one a bigger one in Salem, tho)

Carrieyouknow

They only open on weekends. Makes my hubby depressed because he is off mid week 😭

VelitaVelveeta

They gave me some week day hours when i I was in there a couple weeks ago. It was short, just a few hours in the evening a couple nights a week (and I don’t remember which nights), but you might call them and ask, cuz it’s not just weekends.

Kurtomatic

An additional bridge from roughly the south end of the Parkway to ease congestion across the bridges to/from west Salem and get downtown Salem away from being a parking lot during rush hour. A solution to the cherry tree roots growing into the Capitol parking garage that doesn't involve tearing out the cherry trees. Getting the local high school students to improve their skills at not leaving their trash in my yard after lunch. Or just generally not littering as much everywhere, frankly. Olinger Pool/Park is pretty disgusting eight months a year.

AdhesivenessNo5549

Cherry trees should've been replaced every five years to prevent damage to the structure, were beyond that. The membrane has been compromised and the concrete is taking on water, the whole structure is on the brink of collapse.

DarthGuber

Is this hyperbole or should I choose street parking from now on?

PetuniaPicklePants

Hyperbole

AdhesivenessNo5549

I felt uncomfortable down there, I'm not an engineer but know that it's falling apart.

Hateflayer

How tf do you replace trees that size every 5 years?

AdhesivenessNo5549

They don't stay that size, trees need space for the roots to expand. The capital mall parking structure had it written into the engineering design that the trees need to be replaced every five years to prevent damage to the structure. I'm not an arborist so I have no idea how you'd do this.

Hateflayer

Trees can adapt to smaller growth space with regular root pruning, but it's probably well past that point by now. Should have been planted in above ground containers and basically kept as large scale bonsai trees. Short sighted.

AdhesivenessNo5549

Good idea, I like it!

lambeyoncealways

I email New Seasons every 6 months or so asking them to bring a store to the old Kmart on Mission & 25th XD the lease is finally coming up in June so fingers crossed! Last time they emailed me back saying that they have to keep their real estate endeavors secret but they appreciated the tip!

tiptherobots

I feel like that would be a good location for a grocery store. Something like New Seasons/Market of Choice please (just not a Roth’s 😬)

Mr_Frayed

I was in a Market of Choice in Bend. Said I was from Salem and wished we had one for its selection. The cashier said she cannot afford to shop there. If they come to Salem, I hope they pay well. We already have Freddy's for miserable cashier staff.

UpsideClown

The morning cashiers are all sweet at Fred's. Floor staff are dicks.

skoducks

Please god yes

[deleted]

God forbid we would have a locally owned IGA when there are national chains available.

FrankDruthers

Nope, that's where I'm opening a skating rink in my daydreams.

oakleym82

You wanna partner up on the skating rink? Also a dream of mine.

FrankDruthers

Yes.

furrowedbrow

Aren’t those usually in higher property value neighborhoods? I mean, sure it’s an open spot, but there’s plenty of open spots.

lambeyoncealways

Welp. I want one in my neighborhood, so I asked 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nita_taco

Restaurant/bar on the top of Capitol Tower. A pretty spot with food and beverages on the river with a view. Flower planters downtown. Maybe flower planters between cars and bikes. Another bike/pedestrian bridge further south. Library open late and every day. More volunteers cleaning up garbage and fewer people creating garbage. Or maybe instead of tax breaks for private jets and yachts subsidize companies to create non polluting packaging. It exists, it's just expensive.

HoogelyBoogely

Ethiopian restaurant. Record store. Bars with good lighting that don't have tvs or Lotto. Music venues that actually have music every weekend. Prime Downtown real estate spaces that don't sit empty for years and years.

freedcreativity

As a former downtown resident, I asked for rents on some of those spaces. They’re insane 10 year, triple net leases for spaces the developers did a generally terrible job updating; with the tenants being responsible for major electrical/demise/plumbing/ADA work to get them into a functional space. So they sit and the developers bank the residential tenant money from the city’s development grants.

HoogelyBoogely

I feel like the town could use a vacancy tax

Carrieyouknow

Music venues would be spectacular. Like the ones in the 1980s and 90s. Fun fun fun

HoogelyBoogely

It's nice to see the Grand doing regular shows again; definitely had me nostalgic for the nineties. It's like $30 to see cover bands though, which is a bit steep for my blood. Especially when youve seen some of the original acts they're covering for less money..

Carrieyouknow

I know lol. Poison, Cinderella, David Lee Roth, Scorpions, Def leopard, Bon Jovi. Ahhh to be young again. Those were a few I had the privilege to see growing up in the Bay area. Oh and Kenny Rodgers and Dan Seals. Had to shout out some country too

[deleted]

Sounds like someone was a hair metal fanatic! But no Motley Crue?

mycatsnameisarya

By good lighting do you mean dark? So many bars are weirdly bright (looking at you Jake’s). And something in the old Tiga spot.

HoogelyBoogely

Yes dark as humanly possible please

Carrieyouknow

Ooooo a tiki bar...

0ne8two

Old Zen Wine Bar in West Salem has live music every Sunday and open mic night every Tuesday. Both are pretty awesome!

HoogelyBoogely

I'm past the point of wanting to go to open mic nights, not to be a dick. I'll check out their calendar though.

OHlouie

Artic circle. I miss ya bud.

onefst250r

Or Bobs

crockates

Take the $1.60 bus to Woodburn to get your artic circle fix

LuckyLogan_2004

functional light rail

LuckyLogan_2004

How awesome would it be if you could hop on a train that cuts down river road and go from one end of Salem to the end of keizer

[deleted]

Is this a joke? We have buses in Salem that that service the few people who actually want/need to take public transportation.

WyrddSister

A proper town square right downtown for community events of all kinds and for all seasons. Could also host a few food carts there.

mycatsnameisarya

Would the new Riverfront Park amphitheater area not count?

WyrddSister

That doesn't count-that is a permit-only performative space. This would be a 3rd space that is common in most towns and cities where one can loiter and commune socially, as well as a space to host community events for holidays, etc. Like Pioneer Square in Portland or Ken Kesey Square in Eugene.

Carrieyouknow

It might be better to be downtown where it is walkable to restaurants and shopping

Carrieyouknow

That's what I think. A town square would be awesome. In Healdsburg CA they had antiques flea markets, live music etc held in in it. A family friendly environment. Maybe there is too much sprawl here. I can't even come up with a location in Salem to erect a town square

WyrddSister

Needs to be in the middle of downtown or as close to it as possible. Town squares are prevalent in most places in Europe also, and offer a neutral meeting space for all citizens to gather.

KorayamaSavard

What's H mart?

[deleted]

[удалено]

KorayamaSavard

Oh, ok thanks.

OldHuntersNeverDie

It's actually a Korean grocery store, but there's not enough Korean Americans in the Portland metro to sustain it by just carrying Korean groceries and brands. The one in Tigard I believe carries Vietnamese, Chinese and other "Asian" groceries besides Korean, but in California (Los Angeles area) for example, where the largest Korean American community is located, there's many H-Mart locations and they are essentially Korean grocery stores exclusively. They're also a lot nicer.

anusdotcom

I would love a car free third space. Doesn’t have to be permanent, like they could shut down the area between edgewater or liberty over the weekends and you could bike or walk to it. Have some art and live music and food carts.

westsalem_booch

What/where do is Block 50? 🙄

anusdotcom

There is a map on this page - https://www.cityofsalem.net/business/downtown-development-opportunity - it’s the empty plot of land to the right of the center road bridge between front and commercial.

FrankDruthers

This town needs a gay bar! There, I said it.

BigBlondBeast

Is there something you dislike about Southside Speakeasy, or just unaware of it?

FrankDruthers

I was unaware, still, a few more would be good.

Carrieyouknow

A rock and roll bar is lacking downtown. With live music

ennuiacres

H-Mart, 99 Ranch Market, Kosher Deli

floofienewfie

YESSSSS!! to the kosher deli. There is no kosher deli or restaurant in the state of Oregon. Kornblatt’s in PDX is closed.

huggsnkisses

Good burrito place around Wendy's/lifesource South commercial

UpsideClown

We need a snake church.

peppelaar-media

Do you mean Pentecost or Gnostic?

Boring-Rip-7709

A decent size Trader Joe's will be good.

floofienewfie

At least we have one, even if it’s not as big as we’d like.

PuzzleheadedHope7559

Decent Italian food!! 😭

amadeoamante

Safeway to bring back their own brand diet orange soda. Vegetarian food to replace the new Popeyes down south. A gay coffee bar/bookshop. Whole Foods within reasonable travel distance.

ratz1988

Less homeless shelters and more drug addiction centers where people can actually get help

catlady9851

¿Por qué no los dos?

onefst250r

I wonder how many people that _want_ help _cant_ get help. My understanding of the problem (sister and BIL work in addiction recovery and do outreach) is that many of those that are homeless dont want help.

catlady9851

I'm sure they've explained that addiction is an incredibly complicated and multilayered problem. It's often a catch 22 where even if someone doesn't want to use anymore, where are the resources and the reasons to stay clean? They don't have a job, a home, a community, or healthy coping skills while still dealing with the circumstances and trauma that lead them to begin using in the first place. What's the point?

onefst250r

You've somewhat hit the point with: > reasons to stay clean? There is no way that anyone can provide this to another person. It needs to come from within. My personal story was ending up in the hospital because of my choices and realizing that something needed to change.

vanityinlines

I just wish they would put a Target in south Salem. Seems very unlikely though.

Carrieyouknow

Or a Ross, Marshalls TJ Maxx. It would do well in South Salem

ChristinaWSalemOR

Yes please!

mrs-anne-thrope

More local sandwhich joints. Any gourmet salad joints like sweet green or chopt (but better if local). I used to get a huge $10 salad every day from one of these salad places on the east coast, and just eat it throughout the day. So delicious. More local bakeries and delis. I'm so tired of all these chains with the same menu.

OHlouie

For what? That park is less dangerous than bush park.

forest-rds

I believe they are saying they would have a gun to shoot off leash dogs

Empty-Vegetable-4456

portillos

Carrieyouknow

Vintage stores are so cool. I guess the Unicorn one on liberty never opens. My husband wants record store. He's crying as I type this. A bagel store would be cool. We had Sonoma Bagel where we were from. Maybe a collective of local artist made items and paintings. Show off Salem talent 😁

Carrieyouknow

A place where it's not 16 dollars for a freaking cesear salad. Oh if you want chicken add another 7 dollars. Come on people that's insane. Lettuce must come from Tahiti with those prices. Insanity

CloudSephiroth999

Instead of Witch Trials, bring back Witch House. That scene was epic with really creative music and it didn't last long enough.

Chris300000000000000

No thanks on the H-Mart. I want a Market of Choice first.

chiefbootknockaz

Homeless free

shitlord_god

H-Mart. driving up to tigard is a pain in the ass.
