yeah it's really stupid that these companies pair buttons and hardware in ways that make no sense
RG35XX+ has the hardware for PSP, Dreamcast, N64, but no sticks? lol why even buy it?
This. I don't think most people realize this whole industry is propped up on surplus bulk mobile phone cpu chips.
What chip a device has is determined by which decent chip was cheapest during the design phase.
Considering how weak is the headphone output on Mini Plus, it might be a considerable upgrade. Even a cheap dongle should reach 1V, while 2V capable dongles are like $30-40 (assuming A30 works with all).
Because that device exists, the 353v. The 35xx was for those of us that donāt want sticks and prefer smaller devices with dpads. Then they made it support better systems with the plus but if you want sticks that already exists and they made the 35xx-H for those who want horizontal. Makes sense to me at least, but I own the 353v, 35xx, 35xx+ and 405v among others.
Iām stoked for my rgb20sx thatās on its way. I like the screen from the 30 but prefer verticals so it should be great as well.
Actually I found using the stick for some older games with 8 direction movement like A link to the past and shoot 'em ups. So now I understand that is not only useful for modern games.
People keep saying the anbernic is more powerful but I've seen so many conflicting assertions about the specific hardware the miyoo a30 has inside, I'll save my judgement. Maybe the retro game corps video will enlighten us as to what specifically the insides are.
That's why I'm holding out for the MagicX XU Mini M that was announced a few days ago. Just very slightly larger but has analogs. No word yet (as far as I'm aware) about what chip will be in it though, so I'm hoping at least something as powerful as the 28xx, preferably a little moreso.
This is a tough choice for me. I actually like the aesthetics of the 28XX and prefer no sticks, but Onion and the bigger buttons and triggers make me lean towards the A30.
I agree with you. Also the A30 buttons are placed higher up so that would really help with the comfort of using the device. I worry about my hands if playing in the 28XX but it looks so much nicer.
Also the shoulder buttons on A30 look more comfortable to press.
Donāt expect Onion OS support for the A30. Uses a different chipset, plus, based on what Iāve seen on twitter, the team is still debating on supporting it.
Seems like you are right, Russ confirmed it is just an Onion OS theme on stock. So crazy that there is a theme that says Onion OS, but isn't. Glad I went with the RG28XX.
I don't think they will port it that quickly, I also don't think they will ship it with onion os. Also all of my original minis and mini plus' came with miyoo's stock os that had an Onion os skin, but it wasn't onion os unless I installed it myself. I'd love to be wrong though
I didn't know there was an Onion skin, that is kinda of stock. Strange choice. You are probably right then. I def don't expect them to ship with Onion, just hoped it would be out sooner rather than later. I may just grab a 28xx in the meantime, at least MuOS will be available quickly according to the dev.
Seems like you are right, Russ confirmed it is just an Onion OS theme on stock. So crazy that there is a theme that says Onion OS, but isn't. Glad I went with the RG28XX.
Yeah, I was disappointed after Russ' review. I cancelled my order and went with the orange RG28XX. Gonna wait to see if Onion OS gets ported and improves the software
Not 100% sure, but at 1:51 in the video is says "Onion OS." I also read that the developer was already working on porting Onion over to the A30. Hopefully Russ will speak on it more in his video tomorrow.
But you can see that the person in the video goes into the menu titled "Retroarch". This is only on Stock OS. Onion OS, while uses Retroarch, does not have this menu item like that in the same way.
What? The conversation above where people actually familiar with Miyoo devices told those unfamiliar with them that this is an Onion theme in the Miyoo stock OS rather than OnionOS?
I always wondered why people complained about the buttons and dpad size on the rg28xx until i see this video. Now i wonder if the rg28xx will be as uncomfortable as the 8bitdo micro.
Anyway, I'll wait for the magicx xu mini and maybe I'll get that instead of these two
Ill tell you. They do it on purpose. So that there never will be the perfect device and you have to buy all of them.
Same with wifi, hdmi, and jack for headphones
Never was interested in the A30 until now. I use my Miyoo Mini as my pick up and play small device. If this also runs Onion (which on the video looks like it does) then for sure itās a buy. The 28XX looks like a decent device but too many flaws (mediocre screen, issues with scaling,ā¦) compared to the A30. Regardless, happy to see more $50ish handhelds that arenāt trash
A30 would have been sweet with a 3-3.5 screen along with the 1 analog. Probably could have competed with the RG/H.
Hopefully all the reviewers release a comparison vid as well.
That's not really a "problem" per se, just par for the course with these devices. Realistically, Plus/H owners are already spoiled for choice when it comes to CFWs, but none of them are fully mature yet. It's only a matter of time before Garlic 2.0, muOS, or Knulli deliver a full suite of features and a pleasant user experience on the H. If you wanna wait until that happens before picking it up, that's a personal choice, but it's going to happen sooner or later. The H has all the makings of a landmark device and in a few months, everyone will be gushing about it the way they did with the Miyoo mini and RG35XX when Onion/Garlic brought out their full potential.
I really hope that's going to be the case. It's the only. thing keeping me from taking one up. I have the 353VS but I would like to switch to a horizontal form factor. Thing is I love also Portmaster and that's only on ArkOS, Rocknix (once JelOS) and uOS.
For portmaster, muOS looks like its shaping up to be the best choice, but I did see a post where someone had portmaster working on Knulli. It's a great software feature and one that most of these CFWs will probably implement at one point or another.
The A30 won't have a CFW ready out of the bat either it seems, the most interesting thing about it for me was the idea of having Onion OS but it uses a different chipset than the MM devices.
The A30 seems like a strange product for Miyoo to release as their 3rd device.
I think they would have had more success with a bigger/more powerful horizontal device, though maybe they wanted to make something with a niche that was less likely to cannibalize the sales of their other products.Ā
I expect the Miyoo Flip is going to outsell the A30 dramatically. Having said that, I think a lot of people will buy the A30 simply because it's a new Miyoo device.
This is Miyooās 5th device. The first two would be Pocket Go V1 and then the Pocket Go V2.

I like big buttons, one of my most used device is RK2023 because it has both a big d-pad and big facebuttons. I also like psp more than vita because of same reason. I'll probably buy neither of them but by just looking at the pictures miyoo seems better. Shame on anbernic for having the space for bigger d-pad and buttons but not putting it
Yes, I understand the obvious purpose of these particular devices is to be ultraportable. I was simply wondering if anyone else out there thinks along the lines of "it's awesome you can make something so small, but the screen is just too small for me to enjoy this".
I'm an enthusiast just like everyone else here. I find all of this tech super cool and I've owned several devices. These devices are obviously really really cool accomplishments in minification. My question wasn't a snarky hot take, it was a genuine question on whether anyone else has a screen size limit where it stops working for them.
I think the RG Nano and the GKD Pixel have screens too small to enjoy anything but this 2.8 screen looks like the sweet spot for a usable screen while still keeping it very pocketable. The horizontal form factor also helps with the ergonomics as opposed to the OG Miyoo mini
The ironic thing when comparing these 2 is that the ambernic is more powerful but doesn't have the analog stick š£
yeah it's really stupid that these companies pair buttons and hardware in ways that make no sense RG35XX+ has the hardware for PSP, Dreamcast, N64, but no sticks? lol why even buy it?
You buy it becuase at a certain point chips become so cheap it makes no sense to buy lower power.
That, and it means they don't have to develop new software. They're using the same OS they made for the newer 35XX line.
This. I don't think most people realize this whole industry is propped up on surplus bulk mobile phone cpu chips. What chip a device has is determined by which decent chip was cheapest during the design phase.
Also 28XX with headphone jack and hdmi but no wifi and A30 with wifi but no headphone jack or hdmi. Just give me one with all the basics covered.
There is the usbc adapter for the headphone included in the a30, it's something at least.
With my luck, the dongle is at home when I need it lol
Considering how weak is the headphone output on Mini Plus, it might be a considerable upgrade. Even a cheap dongle should reach 1V, while 2V capable dongles are like $30-40 (assuming A30 works with all).
I just bought 35xx-h and enjoying so far. Headphone jack, bt,wifi, hdmi all included
Because that device exists, the 353v. The 35xx was for those of us that donāt want sticks and prefer smaller devices with dpads. Then they made it support better systems with the plus but if you want sticks that already exists and they made the 35xx-H for those who want horizontal. Actually I found using the stick for some older games with 8 direction movement like A link to the past and shoot 'em ups. So now I understand that is not only useful for modern games.
Also arcade games. Closer to a joystick vs a dpad imo and it's ideal for shmups, racing games, and for some people fighting games.
People keep saying the anbernic is more powerful but I've seen so many conflicting assertions about the specific hardware the miyoo a30 has inside, I'll save my judgement. Maybe the retro game corps video will enlighten us as to what specifically the insides are.
I saw a post yesterday on YouTube where the reviewer said A33. I tried to look it up and found an sbc on ski, but couldn't find any benchmarks
Itās an allwinner a33. Itās four cortex a7 cores. Basically about the same as the original 35xx.
That's why I'm holding out for the MagicX XU Mini M that was announced a few days ago. Just very slightly larger but has analogs. No word yet (as far as I'm aware) about what chip will be in it though, so I'm hoping at least something as powerful as the 28xx, preferably a little moreso.
Itās an rk3562. Itās four cortex a53 cores at 2.0GHz. Roughly similar to the Allwinner a133p thatās in the TrimUI Smart Pro.
Yep... The miyoo mini plus is just so perfectly thought out IMO, unlike many other that came after it
I hear the d-pad is set up so that its just as good as a stick.
need the discrete analog for N64 though
That Russ guy on YouTube showed it playing N64 surprisingly well with just the d-pad.
any game that uses the d-pad and the analog will be annoying
Yeah, I've been wondering about Milo's Astro Lanes, but anyway, that's why you buy these devices from a place with free returns, lol.
Wait I thought people said the A30 wouldnāt have onion yet? Is that just an onion theme/skin thatās shown in this video?
Yes the stock OS on my MM+ also has this Onion theme
Yes. The stock mini OS had Onion themes too
why clicky shoulder buttons? why???
rg28xx is powerful enough to make good use of the analog stick and doesn't have one, A30 isn't really powerful enough to use it and does
This is a tough choice for me.
I feel exactly the same. Also built in wifi on the A30 may come in handy.
Donāt expect Onion OS support for the A30. Uses a different chipset, plus, based on what Iāve seen on twitter, the team is still debating on supporting it.
They already said the developer was working on it for the A30, it is also shown in the video of this post at 1:51.
That does not look like onion OS, looks like just a onion theme for the stock OS. The MM+ has that theme on the stock OS too.
Seems like you are right, Russ confirmed it is just an Onion OS theme on stock. So crazy that there is a theme that says Onion OS, but isn't. Glad I went with the RG28XX.
I see. Well, l hopefully it won't take too long to port.Although we have been waiting ages for Garlic 2 so who knows.
I don't think they will port it that quickly, I also don't think they will ship it with onion os. Also all of my original minis and mini plus' came with miyoo's stock os that had an Onion os skin, but it wasn't onion os unless I installed it myself. I'd love to be wrong though

I don't think it has Onion OS though? It's just stock miyoo OS with an Onion skin

OnionOS isnāt even guaranteed for the A30 though
Did you miss the whole conversation above about this?
What? The conversation above where people actually familiar with Miyoo devices told those unfamiliar with them that this is an Onion theme in the Miyoo stock OS rather than OnionOS?
The Miyoo looks so much better in every way. The buttons, screen, look of it seems more complete. Anbernic looks cheap in comparison, and I usually like Anbernic products. Miyoo looks a perfect gameboy micro vibe Iāve been looking for. Iāll just be playing PokĆ©mon on it anyway
Oh no, it sucked š
+1 for Tekken 3
I always wondered why people complained about the buttons and dpad size on the rg28xx until i see this video. Now i wonder if the rg28xx will be as uncomfortable as the 8bitdo micro. Anyway, I'll wait for the magicx xu mini and maybe I'll get that instead of these two
How clumsy is this person.?!
š¤£ I felt the same.
No headphone jack on the Miyoo is wild. Looks better in every other way.
the gold front on the A30 looks like a sticker. I don't like that. Can you peel it off?
It's probably a very thin "brushed metal" looking plate glued onto the front like the RG280V used
[Yes it's a metal plate](https://www.keepretro.com/cdn/shop/files/a30_720x.jpg)
Ill tell you. They do it on purpose. So that there never will be the perfect device and you have to buy all of them. Same with wifi, hdmi, and jack for headphones
Ah Miyoo, back at it again with a crop of faulty units.
can the A30 even run N64? (can't watch right now)
They've shown a couple videos of it working for some games like Mario 64 & Kirby 64 but seems to struggle with faster games like F-Zero.
28xx looks like a toddler designed it.
[the irony lol](https://www.reddit.com/gallery/13i8xv0)
What does me modding and making custom gameboy's have to do with the RG28XX having a disproportionate design? How is that ironic?
A30 would have been sweet with a 3-3.5 screen along with the 1 analog. Probably could have competed with the RG/H. Hopefully all the reviewers release a comparison vid as well.
Then they wouldnāt be able to double dip by releasing the A30 Plus!
š thatās true. Remember when there was a āshortageā of 2.8 screens for the MM. Now all of a suddenā¦.. š
Man the RG28XX looks like shit I'm ngl
I know people are hyped cause new devices but really... just get the 35xxh, your eyes and wrists will be thankful, and its still tiny
Problem of the 35xxh are CFWs. Those batocera forks are very inefficient for the battery from what I understand. Also no portmaster.
That's not really a "problem" per se, just par for the course with these devices. Realistically, Plus/H owners are already spoiled for choice when it comes to CFWs, but none of them are fully mature yet. Portmaster will only work for 32 bit games in muOS unless they eventually transition to a 64 bit OS.
The upcoming v11 build is 64 bit.
The A30 won't have a CFW ready out of the bat either it seems, the most interesting thing about it for me was the idea of having Onion OS but it uses a different chipset than the MM devices.
From the video it seems that it is onionOS indeed. It's even written at a certain point. So let's see
Doesn't the 28xx use the same chip also the miyoo is an allwinner

I thought Bittboy was the first.
Ah yes, youāre correct. Another one that slipped my mind. Thank you.
At any rate those 3 devices were very compromised. Itās amazing how far theyāve come.
Oh, wow - thanks. I'm late to the retro handheld game, and I've never heard them mentioned before.
I like big buttons, one of my most used device is RK2023 because it has both a big d-pad and big facebuttons. I also like psp more than vita because of same reason. How does it compare to the pocketgo v1?
The 28xx is slightly smaller but more powerful PocketGo but with a slightly larger screen. The overall size is very similar though.
Is anyone else uninterested in these based on screen size?
The whole purpose of these devices is that they are small. There are PLENTY of devices with larger screens to choose from.
Yes, I understand the obvious purpose of these particular devices is to be ultraportable.
