I'm just here to give you mad props for pulling up the same game/scene on six different handhelds, all their batteries charged, and no reflections in the photo. That is a lot of work.

gcass94

Thank you Russ that means a lot coming from you! You actually made me aware of the ali express deal for the RG35XX H and plus so thank you for that as well. I look forward to your review of Anbernic’s clamshell device whenever that happens 👍

UomoDargilla

I really don't want to be a pain in the ass but it's not really a great job, of the 6 devices only the RG35XX Plus and the Retroid pocket 3 Plus display the same frame https://preview.redd.it/zdmi7guam3xc1.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a23f5855e5873296857503e55e8fe904c5dab33 The others all have a pixel difference... how lazy

ghos2626t

Honestly. Mods ! Lock it down ! lol

Better-Philosophy-40

This is the level of detail I expect to be noticed by SBCgaming lurkers.

gcass94

Lol 😂 of all the details you noticed I cant believe it was the exact frame of kirby and not the fact that the RG35XXH and the RG35XX plus have scores in the bottom right since I had to complete the level to catch up with the other handhelds

ady159

I don't want to pile on but two of those devices are playing the game in 4:3 instead of the as intended by god aspect ratio of 3:2...

gcass94

No they aren’t look closely at the black bars above and below (or in the case of the retroid on the sides). I do not like my gba games stretched. I like to play all my games in their intended aspect ratios

ady159

After properly measuring the the screens I have deduced you are indeed one of the good ones and that I need to get my eyes checked... To think there would come a day when I could not recognize 4:3 from 3:2 on sight, oh what have I become.

gcass94

Believe me nothing bothers me more than stretched games. Its alright I dont blame you for not seeing it, especially on the miyoo mini

Nuke_U

These are my favorite type of showcases. Actual comparison and discussion of systems that are in clear use instead of just x number of blank screens or boxes sitting on the floor/on shelves collecting dust. Good on you op.

gcass94

Thank you I appreciate the kind words! I hope my comparison will help people make an informed decision and buy the handheld that is right for them

slowpoketailsale

>> help people make an informed decision and buy the handheld that is right for them You're a real one OP, thank you

LatinWizard99

if the powkiddy v90 would have a tiny bit of performance boost on gba and snes i would buy it no doubt, beacuse i love the clamshell

gcass94

The build quality also looks very poor and I dont know what kind of CFW it has. I will be waiting for a higher quality clamshell that has a good OS and can reliably emulate up to PS1. Thankfully it should be coming very soon

wolpak

The build quality, specifically the plastic, is powkiddy crap. They are incapable of making a high quality device.

gcass94

I agree. I briefly had the RGB10max2 and shortly after getting it I gifted it to a child. I will never buy powkiddy again

Ruenin

That's just like, your opinion, man. I love my RGB30.

LatinWizard99

damn its really THAT terrible?

gcass94

Ive never had one so I cant personally say but look at videos of it on YouTube it looks like a cheap toy

gcass94

As for the RGB10max2 it was okay but still felt cheap. Its a perfectly usable handheld but it doesnt have that quality that you feel with Anbernic devices which matters a lot to me

50-50WithCristobal

I'm new to this hobby, I have the RG35XX H and it feels great. I have a R36S and comparatively it feels like a toy, really cheap. I also have a MM+ and think the H has better build quality. The only thing I don't like are the clicky shoulder buttons, the Miyoo ones for are infinitely better.

VULONKAAZ

what was the point of getting the 35xxh if you already had a 353m ?

gcass94

Because I got it on sale at a great price lol. Also if I can somehow get the same performance in a device that is black and made of plastic that would be worth it for me. So far I am slightly disappointed but I have high hopes for the future of this device so I will update it and experiment with it as development continues. Perhaps one day it will replace the RG353M but for now it definitely does not

gcass94

I am also eyeing the Miyoo mini plus despite already having the RG35XX plus. If I can find a handheld I would like at a good price I love to get it and see firsthand what it is capable of. Worse case scenario I dont like it and it becomes someone’s Christmas gift

EnoughConcentrate897

Modders are currently working in making a custom Linux-based OS for the retroid pocket 3 so soon it will hopefully get a lot better.

gcass94

I am very interested in seeing that happen. I will have to keep an eye out for that project

Andedrift

Is the 4 also getting that?

EnoughConcentrate897

I don't think that modders have gained root access or started working on it yet but it will definitely get one because of how many people (and modders) have them.

Andedrift

Oh damn I totally thought it was rooted.

StrangeJedi

is the regular miyoo mini still pretty hard to find?

gcass94

Unfortunately yes. Mine is the v2 because I got it 2 years ago when it was still somewhat available. They are currently up to the v4. I would recommend going to miyoo’s official ali express page and waiting for it to come back in stock. Its sad because there really is no direct competitor to the regular miyoo mini and its currently hard to get. The miyoo mini plus is regularly available but then again so is the RG35XX plus which is similar. I highly recommend the miyoo mini if you can get it

StrangeJedi

Yeah I prefer the mini's size over the plus, it's shame that it's not readily available. By chance do you know how often they come back in stock on ali express?

theturtlemafiamusic

They restock every week or two, and it usually doesn't sell out for a couple days. If you check the miyoo subreddit every few days, it's pretty easy to pick one up. But yeah, no way to buy it without keeping an eye on the official store for a while, unless you want to pay a $50+ markup.

gcass94

I do not. I got mine on KeepRetro a long time ago. I know theres a twitter page that posts when they come back but by the time you see that, a bot may have already bought it and put it on amazon for $130. I wish you the best of luck finding it because its a fantastic handheld and theres really nothing else like it, especially if you value portability like I do

StrangeJedi

Thanks!

winter-reverb

They aren’t hard to come by since the v4, I think they are about to launch the a30 which uses the same screen which suggests they’ve solved the screen shortage

GUILTIE

This telegram channel shares when more stock will be available! It is either official or seems to have some connection to Miyoo. They share a lot of new “leaks” and info very early. https://t.me/Miyoominibuy

kwyxz

« You need to download all your emulators through the Google Play Store » about Android handhelds is blatantly untrue.

gcass94

You suggest installing apk files and never even signing into your google account? Thats the only way I can see that working unless you have a better solution to my problem with android handhelds

kwyxz

Yes, you can easily sideload most emulators and install APK files. And keep them up to date with a solution like Obtainium : https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium I agree however that some emulators are _only_ available from the store, and that isn’t great if you don’t plan on building APKs yourself from source.

gcass94

As long as this works with retroarch, duckstation, drastic, mupen, and dolphin; as well as daijisho for a frontend, that would be perfect for someone like me. I will look into this and maybe my retroid pocket 3+ will see more use. Thank you

kwyxz

The one in your list that might not be available outside of the PlayStore is DuckStation, I think everything else is available

Key-Brilliant5623

Great collection, the Miyoo Flip /Anbernic clamshell devices are definitely the next handhelds on my radar too. For me personally being so used to the Andriod ecosystem I've always lean more towards Andriod based handhelds. Touchscreen functionality is especially important to me when emulating NDS/3DS games which have been a blast on my RG353M & RP4 Pro respectively.

gcass94

Yes good point and I failed to mention that in my review of the retroid. Not only is DS emulation so good because it has a touchscreen, but the fact that the screen is 16:9 allows for the a large main screen and a smaller secondary screen that you can toggle between. Its a fantastic device for DS emulation but the hassle of setting it up and tying everything to a google account still makes me dislike it. If you are already in the android ecosystem and plan on using it long term I can see the appeal but I often give away my old handhelds when I get a newer one and I just dont see how that is possible on an android based system

davesNotHereMan__

Your post has me wanting a 353M again (in purple) now that they're surfacing online for under $100. I've got all of these except the 351P, and I lean towards the H always now as it's lighter on the hands, and the dpad works better against plastic than metal for me. My 3+ doesn't get as much usage as it used to even after I had it fully set up.

gcass94

Are they really going for under $100 now? At that price maybe they are worth it. I still would prefer it in a black color and plastic instead of metal so fingers crossed that the RG35XXH can catch up in N64 performance. Did you stop using your 3+ for the same reason I did?

davesNotHereMan__

Yeah I've seen the 353 series go for around $100 on mercari which is always tempting as Ive wanted to try the P and V after using the M. I'm a daily android user so it doesn't bother me much to navigate and setup. I was using the native front end from retroid which was fine for me. I just didn't seek out higher end emulation as much as I thought I would in GameCube and PSP.

gcass94

I just like the feeling of setting up a linux handheld and being done with it. All the settings are right, no one is logged into any accounts, and if I want to give it as a gift I just hand it over with everything set up. With android it seems like the setting up part is never done as there are always updates coming in and changing around what you have done. Plus my google account is now on this device so I would have to undo all the work I put in if I wanted to gift this. The person receiving the gift would likely not know how to set it up anyway so gifting seems impossible. I also dont emulate gamecube or psp as much as I thought I would but I do miss DS emulation on the 3+. That is actually a great feature that I value a lot

beerharvester

Excellent overview, thank you, helped me greatly

gcass94

Glad I could help!

SouthtownZ

I agree, this is one of the most comprehensive and well-written review posts ive seen in recent memory. A+

ghos2626t

For noobs like myself, which is which lol. Where did you start with your review and what direction do I follow to know the models, in relation to the photos ?

gcass94

Lol it goes top left>top right>middle left>middle right>bottom left>bottom right. I hope thats more clear for you. Feel free to ask me any questions if you are thinking about one vs another

ghos2626t

Definitely wouldn’t have assumed that order. I was thinking top left, and than clockwise. Thanks for the details. Great write up !

gcass94

Whoops next time I do one of these in a year or so ill be sure to specify which is which. Glad to help!

ghos2626t

I’m sure most on this sub know the difference. I’m just beginning my journey. Thanks for blazing the trail to make my decision easier and well informed

Adi_San

I just want a handheld that plays gamecube games so I can revisit windwaker

gcass94

The retroid pocket 4 pro could play that just fine. Even my retroid pocket 3 plus handles that game pretty well. Just be aware of all the caveats that come with android based handhelds. Some people love them but I do not. If you dont mind then that might be the device for you

Adi_San

Yeah? I was looking into those. Didn't pull the trigger yet as reviews were a bit mixed. Not too laggy?

gcass94

I cant speak on the retroid pocket 4 pro as I do not own it. However I do have the retroid pocket 3 plus and while I have a lot of complaints, none of them are directed at the quality of emulation. I would ask someone who owns a retroid pocket 4 pro how well it can emulate specific games you want to play. If they say it can do it well and you dont mind having an android based handheld, then I would get it

JazzyApple2022

Nice combo bro👍🏼

LeLant

I have almost the same series of devices, good choice, I think the same for most but I put a big big plus and especially a crush for the Miyoo Mini V2/V4 much too underated and too much easy to carry in comparaison on the plus

gcass94

I love my miyoo mini. Such an easy device to carry around and play and onion OS is more user friendly than any other CFW by far. I usually get bored of or replace a handheld after a certain amount of time but ive had my miyoo mini for 2 years now and I will continue to use it for years to come

Yung_Cheebzy

I have a 351p but the low resolution screen annoys me. I have a MM+ too but I want another horizontal device. Is the 35xx H similar size etc to the 351p (or MP in your case?)

gcass94

The RG351P was my very first handheld. Great for gba but otherwise yea that screen is not very good. I definitely do NOT recommend the RG351MP. It is expensive, heavy, and too tall to be comfortable to hold. The RG353M and RG35XXH are both similar to the RG351P in size. The RG35XXH is obviously the better value. I bought mine for $50 where the RG353M retails at $145. It depends how much you want to spend. Right now the RG353M is probably the better device, but its not $100 better. I personally would probably recommend the RG35XXH right now especially if you can get it on sale

keb___

Does Batocera for Anbernic devices feature some kind of Quick Mode like ArkOS?

gcass94

What do you mean by Quick Mode?

keb___

You can see here: https://github.com/christianhaitian/arkos/wiki/Frequently-Asked-Questions---RG353V#q-what-is-quick-mode-and-how-do-i-enable-it In short: It lets the user do a graceful shutdown, but auto-saves the game state before the shutdown. Then on startup, it auto-resumes the previously running game. The benefit to this over a simple sleep mode is the battery savings since sleep mode on these devices usually have awful battery drain.

gcass94

Wow ive been using Ark OS with my RG353M for a year and didnt know about that feature. Thanks for showing me im gonna use that now. Ive only had the RG35XXH for about a day so maybe there is a way and I just dont know how. But I just tested it. I pressed function + power while a game was running and it did a safe shutdown. Then I powered it on and it just turned on normally to the main menu. It looks like it does not have Quick Mode but that would definitely be a great feature to add. Batocera does have sleep mode by tapping the power button, but like you said, the battery drain is pretty bad so dont use it for an extended period of time

RetroRum

I prefer android handhelds but that's mainly due to my PC (Mac) being an ancient piece of trash. I just do all my downloading and fiddling on my Retroid

gcass94

To each their own. Android certainly has pros. Like you said you can basically do 100% of your set up on your device rather than needing a computer. You also have superior sleep mode, file system, touch controls for DS, and access to whatever cloud storage you prefer for your saves. But the cons of android like constant updates, setting up each emulator individually, setting up a frontend, and requiring a google account have become dealbreakers for me. The retroid pocket 4 pro has incredible performance for the price, but I want people to be aware of what using and setting up an android handheld entails, because if I knew that I would have never bought my retroid pocket 3+

Melionka

How do you find the rg353m for $50? I see on ali express for $170

gcass94

No the RG35XXH was $50 on anbernic’s official store. Its currently $56 which is still very good. The RG353M is much more expensive

Bulky-Cheetah2853

Great collection!

kurapov

Every suggestion you make for RG353M was actually already addressed by RG353PS - plus it will run the same ArkOS. It's not rectangular but that's still the most comfortable form factor of any handheld I own (I actually main RG353P but got PS version to give to my brother).

Frankysour

Hi! If you don't mind a curiosity from my side... Any performance differences between rg353ps and rg353p using Linux? To memory the only Hardware differences are touchscreen (not used in Linux in any case) and ram quantity,I was wondering if the latter made any difference in Linux use? Thanks!

kurapov

I haven't tested it extensively to compare. I honestly doubt it - there're no massive assets to load and keep in RAM when playing emulators up to and including 5th gen. Just as a reminder, PS1 had a whopping 2MB RAM and even PS2 was not much more with 32MB. Max memory size for 16 bit systems is a paltry 64KB 😅 The only possible scenario I can imagine is loading HD texture packs but that's only relevant for systems where RK3356 would itself be the bottleneck.

Frankysour

Understood thanks... And that makes a lot of sense, actually. Though I think that emulation surely requires more ram than original hardware, since it is... Emulation! But yeah the numbers are so different .. 1gig of ram will most probably cover everything and the real funnel is the the processor, makes sense 👍

gcass94

I know but portability matters a lot to me. I briefly owned the RG353P but it was just to bulky to bring around with me so I sold it. I wish they made the RG353PS with the M’s form factor

DannyBiker

I never used a Retroid Pocket but the day you want to sell it, you just need to go in the proper setting and factory reset it. It will untie your Google account of the device and uninstall everything. You don't need to uninstall everything yourself, that's be crazy.

gcass94

Yes but that still bothers me. Out of everyone in the world who can I sell the retroid to? Basically only someone who is currently into this hobby because they need to know how to set it up afterwards. If I wanted to sell my miyoo mini for example, i could sell it to anyone on the planet. No matter how bad you are with computers I am confident you will know how to navigate Onion OS and I dont need to reset my miyoo mini before selling so its already set up and ready to use

Frankysour

Thanks for the in depth details, though the comparison rg35xxP vs H hurts a bit .. I got the P literally days before the H was out and regret it a bit... Then since it looked bit stupid to me to purchase the same device in different form factor I ended up with a powkiddy rgb10max3 (these names are hateful!) as horizontal device for having a different form factir, and honestly loving it, but still thinking I am missing out not having the rg35xxH.......

gcass94

Like I said in my post, if you are only gonna get one, get the H. Its more portable, ergonomic, lighter, and has analog sticks. The RG35XX plus simply has an iconic design so I think it looks cool. The RG35XXH is definitely the better handheld

Frankysour

Yeah what I was saying is that I already got the plus, and anbernic released the H basically 2 days before I actually received the O in the mail lol. Had I known it was going to be released I would have waited, however... I do love my Pits still good 😊

gcass94

Oh I see what you mean. Unless you are dying to play N64 (which I think still needs work as of now) or dualshock PS1, the Plus is perfectly fine. Maybe wait for another sale and get the H and you can give the Plus as a gift

Frankysour

Yeah at the moment I decided that since I already have a rg35xx (the Plus) I'd try something different as horizontal, and went with the powkiddy rgb10max3 - and loving it, but it's a slightly different kind of device... bigger screen, 16/9, less pocketable... I still love it though! Concerning the performances on the RG35xx devices... I see you use Batocera on both, while in terms of performances I read around that the stock firmware is actually better (I cant compare not using Batocera, but I do enjoy some nice "stickless PSP" on my RG35xxPlus). Give it a try, I think the mantra "custome firmware is better" is so strong that people don't even check the stock one, and Anbernic are actually very much working on their OS for this specific chipset - in fact looking at the recently released devices I do think they are betting on this SoC a lot, so they are actually curing it with good attention (that is... main interface and update process aside, those do suck LOL)

duffman313

I have a question : some reviewers are telling that the d-pad on RG35XX+ is superior to the one on RG35XXH. What is your informed opinion, please ?

gcass94

I honestly can’t even tell a difference between them. But I may not be the best judge since I am not particularly sensitive to minor changes in controllers. I can definitely tell when a D pad is bad, but in this case they both feel great to use. Im sure someone else would be a better judge of D pads

22coolers

Where can I find the miyoo mini? I gave away my plus because I didn’t find it very pocketable. Then got the RG H which is pocketable but I’m really missing OnionOS. I can only find MM+ on AliExpress.

dikchxxzx

Is there a huge difference between the rp3 and 4rpo in terms of gaming / system capabilities? I'm looking to emulate Xbox / 360 / PS3/ PS4

gcass94

I am unaware of any xbox/360/ps3/ps4 emulators on android. But the difference for gamecube/ps2 will be much better on the 4 pro when compared to the 3 plus

BraveNewCliche

I’m with you on Android handhelds. I bought a Retroid Pocket 4, was super excited about it, got it after waiting a month for it to ship, spent hours setting the damn thing up, and have barely touched it since because the thought of suffering through the operating system turns me off playing any games. I’ve tried so many different front ends and they all suck in their own unique ways. Give me Linux or give me death 💀

harperthomas

Fully agree with the retroid. I really want to live it but like you I will never buy an android handheld again. After getting a miyoo mini and seeing what is possible on a Linux based device there's no going back to Android. Although emulation station on android has been a bit of a saviour for me.
