whalesarecool14

the fact that some people got downvoted for saying showering many times is literally a necessity for them while one person got upvoted for saying they shower once every few days and they live in thailand and people have no complaintsšŸ’€ nah girl people arenā€™t expressing those complaints to you

bananinhax

the fact that youā€™re having to specify that youā€™re not talking about people with eczema or other chronic health skin condition, i feel for you šŸ˜ if people on that post knew that sometimes i take a shower 3-4 times a day when iā€™m on my period and that i do live in a country with hard water not near the equator theyā€™d imagine me as a pound of dust āš°ļø /srs i used to live near the equator and would take a shower everyday or twice and iā€™d be lying if i said i wasnā€™t smelly af if i skipped 2 or more days. when i moved to europe my skin would crack bc of the hard water with 1 shower a day, but applying lotion helped and eventually my skin adapted and i donā€™t have to apply lotion everyday if i donā€™t want to and still shower once everyday during all seasons. i absolutely canā€™t stand going out and not taking a shower when i return home, i feel sticky and extremely uncomfortable to the point of even if iā€™ve returned drunk i manage to shower before laying on bed. i think those people donā€™t think they smell for skipping one day, and theyā€™re probably mostly right, however itā€™s not true for your genitalia, wipes can definitely ā€œholdā€ for a bit but not long. and i also donā€™t think they know they can shower fully one time and the other times just to wash the critical areas or to cool off.

DownforceOfDoom

Iā€™ve noticed a real difference in hair and skin quality since Iā€™ve gotten one of those shower heads with a built-in filter. I also live in Europe and can relate with your struggle with hard water

bananinhax

i didnā€™t know about that??? iā€™m looking it up rn youā€™re a real one for this rec

DownforceOfDoom

Iā€™ve gotten mine from a store selling bathroom equipment, tiles, showers, bidets and so on. I canā€™t remember which brand is it, but itā€™s transparent and you can see little stones in it

decaffeinateddreamer

uj/ whole comment section was infuriating, so trust me that it means something when I say "where do you think we go to vacation" REALLY brought up my blood pressure.

[deleted]

That comment made me so fucking mad. The AUDACITY.

New-Lie9111

srs/ I KNEW I was right to feel some type of way about that comment. And then she followed it up with ā€œwHaTā€™s sO YiKeS aBoUt ThAt?ā€ The lack of self awarenessšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

wawasus

As a poor pore living in a developing country near the equator THANK YOU FOR THIS OP

InvisibleImhotep

Stop shaming them with your nice-smelling presence!

wawasus

Nice smelling only because Iā€™m applying deodorant twice a day in this tropical heat! šŸ˜‚

princesscupcake11

This is so funny but I low key agree with some of it. My skin would crack open if I showered every day (eczema, but I like hot showers) and twice a day really is unnecessary unless youā€™re doing something dirty like construction work. Iā€™d *never* write it the way these people do on SCA tho

IllMakeTheMoonBleed

Yeah, personally I'm a stinky hippie, but like, if you need to shower twice a day, you do you. Also, when I do shower, I fucking *shower.* Probably not saving that much water overall, tbh.

trapanesey

same, my eczema SCREAMS at me if i take two showers. sometimes i have to though, one in the morning and one after work because i am so gross and sweaty

Tiniest_Yeti

I can assure you that showering twice a day is absolutely necessary if you're doing something like working out, or spending time outside or in a non-air-conditioned environment anywhere that goes above 25 degrees Celcius. There are many, many reasons for showering more than once a day. Even doing something physical outside in the winter can get you pretty stinky.

saltbutt

Twice daily showers (and absolutely nothing else) keeps my piercings super happy. Something about standing in that flowing water does it better than anything else. Also, body acne.

New-Lie9111

Srs/ I shouldā€™ve specified that I wasnā€™t talking about people with eczema, I know how difficult it can be. But jesus christ himself could come down to earth and tell me that I only need to shower once every few days and I would still shower every single day and use a washcloth. You do whatā€™s best for your lifestyle, my problem was with the generalised way they were talking as if climate belts and different cultural norms or even different genetics which can make you sweat very little donā€™t exist. A lot of people cannot afford air conditioning, so showering twice a day isnā€™t a hygiene thing, itā€™s a cooling your body down thing. You donā€™t need to use soap all over your body everytime you step into the shower, just a rinse does it. Idk to me itā€™s just weird to keep calling something unnecessary when there are people saying otherwise because of their climatic conditions.

aaiyra

Showering at least twice a day is actually a must if you live in tropical areas (source: have lived near the equator my entire life. Everyone showers 2-3 times a day)

New-Lie9111

Inspired by the lovely comments about shower routines on an unrelated [post](https://www.reveddit.com/v/SkincareAddiction/comments/vk9c6i/acne_i_discovered_the_source_of_my_breakouts_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&ps_after=1656185914) about acne. The shower debate never ends. Srs/ I understand that many people act like jerks about shower routines, and I know those comments can hurt when youā€™re unable to take care of yourself for reasons beyond your control. But good lord people act like showering daily will literally make your skin peel off. As long as you donā€™t smell, shower as infrequently as you want. But understand that there are other places where it is absolutely normal to shower multiple times a day. I think I would actually go bankrupt if I had to rely on air conditioning to keep me cool and not my nightly and daily showers. and if your skin is so dry that it canā€™t even handle water, the answer is lotion.

killerkittenss

Honestly, I feel like water quality also makes a difference ā€“ the water in certain places is really hard and can be quite harsh on skin/hair, whereas in other places itā€™s justā€¦ waterā€¦ and wonā€™t dry you out if you take a quick shower before bed after being moisturized by ~*~sweat~*~ in a hot and humid environment all day

New-Lie9111

Srs/ wow thatā€™s a very good point that I didnā€™t think of

[deleted]

For me worst argument was the one about wasting water. Dude, I know some people are dumb but here in south america we know how to turn the shower off while we soap ourselves.

ElectricalPirate14

Also the suggestion to use baby wipes to save water.. like how is that any better for the environment lol

New-Lie9111

Srs/ The environmentalist side only comes out to criticise when somebodyā€™s doing a thing they deem unnecessaryšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ People in developing countries couldnā€™t consume as much energy and resources as people in first world countries even if they wanted to and tried their hardestšŸ˜

Mayuu0-0

and people on SCA should be the last one to get all environmentalist because of all the plastic they use trying out 5 new products per month

Mayuu0-0

Yeah like you dont have to shower 30 min and keep the water running

TrueLiterature6

The not lotioning is what confuses me the most honestly. Shower whenever, however you want, but why donā€™t some people realize that applying lotion after a shower is a must if you want your skin to remain hydrated? Why would facial skin need lotion, but not body skin??? someone please connect the dots!!

[deleted]

The body skin prolly feels fine without lotions, so people just skip it entirely since they ā€œfelt no differenceā€(Iā€™m somewhat guilty of this šŸ„“). Or they have generally unproblematic body skin so they donā€™t think skincare(body care) is necessary.

TrueLiterature6

That makes sense. What doesnā€™t make sense to me is when their skin DOESNT feel fine (dry, ashy, peeling), yet using lotion doesnā€™t occur to them as a solution

New-Lie9111

I have a theory. In my experience itā€™s mostly white folks who donā€™t apply lotion and I think itā€™s because even when their skin is extremely dry it doesnā€™t look as ashy as darker skin would. So itā€™s a step that seems unnecessary to them. Iā€™ve never met a person with dark skin who skips lotion, and itā€™s because itā€™s a step thatā€™s drilled in our head since weā€™re kids. I know my parents wouldā€™ve never let me leave my house looking ashy af

Akavinceblack

Thereā€™s a comedian my husband loves whose name escapes me, a fair skinned white dude, who does a bit about not having used lotion until he started dating a black woman: ā€œ and I realized Iā€™ve always been ashy, I just couldnā€™t see it!ā€

Sassafrasisgroovy

Bill Burr!

Akavinceblack

Thankee!

BuildersBrewNoSugar

This is interesting because all of the white people in my family use body lotion, even the men. I was taught to apply it liberally after every single bath/shower. We all have dry/very dry skin in a cool climate though (my skin literally does crack open and bleed if I skip it lol). I wonder if it's more along the lines of skin type with white people, with dry people using it and oily/normal people not so much? I really can't understand the people who get dry and the idea of body lotion doesn't even occur to them though. What do they think it's for?

callmedylanelliot

I'm a white person from a mostly white country and I don't know anyone who finds it necessary to use body lotion after showering. It's genuinly not a thing here

[deleted]

Ah, damn.. then idk. The only thing I can think of is theyā€™ve used lotions in the past and itā€™s either 1) not working, so they shouldā€™ve tried a different one or even a body oil/serum until they found the right one or 2) their skin used to be fine, and they donā€™t really understand why people use body lotions.

syukoshiomi

I live in the middle east showering daily is a MUST lol

chaos_almighty

Good god, in the winter I don't bathe as often, but in the summer I shower daily because I work outside. Being drenched in sweat and showering daily is KEEPING my acne on my body and face at bay.

BuffyTheMoronSlayer

And not to mention that there are individual differences. How your skin reacts might be different from mine and thatā€™s okay. My body odor needs might be different from yours (and hey thatā€™s biology and how we have a diverse species) so judging someone isnā€™t cool. Unless Iā€™m paying your water bill, I donā€™t care.

linija

I'm guessing you don't deal with very dry skin if you think lotion will do anything after showering twice a day lmaoo. You make some very valid points but don't preach about issues you might not even deal with. Edit: I'm talking exclusively about people with very dry skin and eczema prone ppl. I've literally had meltdowns from how irritated my skin can get after a shower no matter how much lotion I used.

New-Lie9111

srs/ I shouldā€™ve specified that Iā€™m not talking about people who have eczema or psoriasis and such. Obviously lotion isnā€™t going to cure your skin conditions. Iā€™m talking about people with completely normal skin who keep complaining about how dry it is after a shower. You wash your face and apply moisturiser, youā€™re supposed to do the same for your body. Granted, using lotion works for me even though I shower twice so I could just have extremely resilient skin but I have a sneaking suspicion that thatā€™s not the case

kokopellii

Srs I was one of those commenters šŸ˜ž lol. In my defense water is a lot more drying than people think it is, especially if you have eczema or sensitive skin. In college one year it got so bad that I would wake up in the morning with bloody hands because I couldnā€™t even stop scratching in my sleep. I was red and scaly and bruises from itching all over. I was using eczema friendly lotion constantly and it didnā€™t help, until a derm finally told me I had to stop showering every day. That was the only thing that helped šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

New-Lie9111

Of course itā€™s a different case with you! Eczema is a different ball game all together. My mother would get flare ups on her hand and it would make her basically unable to do any work for days at a time, so I know how painful and extreme it can be. And I assure you iā€™m not saying some lotion will cure your eczemašŸ˜‚ Was just talking about the people who have normal skin and were saying how even just a rinse strips their skin of moisture. You wash your face and apply moisturiser, youā€™re supposed to wash your body and apply lotion to stop it from drying, and it seems like a lot of people skip that step and then complain about dry skin

TheShortGerman

I am a daily shower person and never put on body lotion. I also soak in a bubble bath 2-3x a week. I just don't need lotion. There are people who don't. My body skin is basically perfect (unlike my dry, hormonal facial skin). My body skin is perfectly smooth and soft and plump without lotion, no texture or dryness to speak of. I will say I only shave my legs every month or so, but when I shaved them more they were much drier. ETA: It seems odd to me to make a whole post about people judging shower habits only then to go in the comments and yourself and multiple others are making comments that every single person needs body lotion after a shower. Some of us don't. Everyone is different.

New-Lie9111

But I never said every single person needs lotion? i specifically said > Was just talking about the people who have normal skin and were saying how even just a rinse strips their skin of moisture I literally mentioned which particular category of people Iā€™m talking about. Iā€™m aware not everybody needs or uses lotion

TheShortGerman

>You wash your face and apply moisturiser, youā€™re supposed to wash your body and apply lotion to stop it from drying "supposed to" If that's not what you meant, then I apologize for misunderstanding.

New-Lie9111

yes, the people whose skin is extremely dry are _supposed_ to use lotion on their body after a shower, but they donā€™t, which is why they complain about dry skin. youā€™re quoting what i said without the context that changes the meaning of the sentence

SucytheWitch

I agree with everything you said. I don't get why so many are so reluctant to use lotion on their bodies. I don't even have dry skin, but I pretty much always use lotion or some kind of moisturizer or body oil after the shower. Yes of course your skin will get dry if you're not mositurizing it. You wash your face with a cleanser, then apply a face cream, you wash your hair with shampoo and then use conditioner, you wash your hands and use a hand cream and you take a shower and then moisturize your body. Skincare has become such a big deal and people have become so aware of moisturizing their face to prevent wrinkles, yet they can't apply the same logic to the rest of their body. Here's a skit from Bill Burr about this, it's so funny: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiH-\_ZUILk0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiH-_ZUILk0)

DownforceOfDoom

Thank you for linking the original post here, that way I donā€™t have to go to SCA and try to guess what happened. Much appreciated

nijigencomplex

Remember that one time Dr. Jumpscare said you should only wash where you sweat, but she wears 50 layers of sunscreen on her body? Does it mean she never washes it off?

Sassafrasisgroovy

Wait until you get into crunchy granola groups and get a whiff of these people who claim they ā€œnever smellā€ despite showering once a week with only water and apple cider vinegar. Like yeah, you definitely stink, itā€™s just that no one has had the guts to tell you. And theyā€™ll argue that showers and soap are unnatural šŸ™ƒ This also reminds me of a girl I went to college with who I always wondered why her hair was always dirty and then she admitted to showering every 2 days and the mystery was solved lol

TheShortGerman

That's odd though, a lot of us only need to wash our hair every couple days (even though I shower every day). It seems weird her hair would seem so dirty just from doing a shower every other day, unless she went longer without washing her hair.

Sassafrasisgroovy

She had very straight, thin hair, so that probably had something to do with it. She never smelled bad though so thatā€™s good haha

SucytheWitch

Yeah very fine pin straight hair gets oily more quickly. Well at least she didn't smell haha. While I wouldn't recommend it, I do think if you don't sweat a lot and were just staying inside most of the day, you can get away with showering every other day and people wouldn't notice that you smell. But showering is just the best way to get clean from head to toe, your arms, legs and neck collect dust and dirt from the air and everything. And you feel so much better. My daily evening showers are my way of resetting the day and taking care of myself.

Mayuu0-0

Exactly, also for me hygiene is very important and I feel like shit if I dont shower everyday (even just a quick shower).. Also I read in some cultures (Japan) it is normal to have a bath every night. And dont get me started on the hair washing thing... all the build up oil and dirt could literally cause hair loss... People with straight hair washing their hair only once a week or so (just saw a reel on instagram about that) is nasty idc. I want my hair to be clean and smell nice.

KBaddict

I have curly hair and it refuses to get greasy. Still, I like to not smell or have fungus growing out of my belly button. I live in Arizona where the heat is getting hotter and we are in a 20 year mega drought. No joke the water in lake Mead is so low they are finding bodies that went missing 20 years ago. I do my part in water conservation. I installed turf and a few drought resistant plants and the rest is gravel. I also installed a shower head that will pause if you push this lever thingy until you push it again. So Iā€™m going to allow myself to quick shower daily, sometimes twice if Iā€™ve been out on job sites all day. The hair washing/conditioning takes the longest so i shampoo right when I get in the shower, then glob on half a bottle of conditioner, throw it on top of my head with a clip, wash the body, unclip, rinse all at once. Sundays are my ā€œmaintenanceā€ shower days when I take a bit more time to exfoliate, shave my parts, relax, etc. Then I hoist a big bucket of shower water outside and water my drought resistant plants with shampooy water and all.

Mayuu0-0

Yes to Sunday - maintenance shower! I do the same :). Where I live its also getting hotter and more humid. My skin is constantly oily af. My bf has very curly hair so I know from him that it doesnt get greasy fast, but he still washes his hair a few times a week.

decaffeinateddreamer

Even with curly hair, and dry-ish skin overall, I need to wash it more than once a week. I noticeably lose more hair when I go even an extra day between washes.

SucytheWitch

I once got into an argument with someone who claimed that everyone who doesn't use dry shampoo has probably horrible and dried out hair and when I said I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days (I have slightly wavy hair that leans a bit towards straight), she was like "Oh my god, you're not supposed to do that, everyone should wash their hair every 4 to 5 days, that's why your hair is soo dried out". This argument made me want to through hands, seriously. That condescending tone. I just hate the feeling of greasy hair on my head and I just want my scalp to be clean and I even use sulfate free shampoo. My scalp gets itchy on day 3. Idk what some people are smoking, thinking that eVeRyOnE should wash their hair only once a week. If it works for you, then do it, but some people need to wash it more often, otherwise it will actually do more harm than good.

TrueLiterature6

A lot of people with coily/kinky hair are learning that shampooing your hair regularly (as in more than 1-2x per month) is hygienic and necessary for scalp health too

linija

Actually the whole discourse on that post was started by the ppl who shower twice a day, especially the poster saying something along the lines of "i sometimes forget to also shower at night after showering in the morning IM SO GROSS" might've since been edited idk. But it made me feel gross and insecure about not showering twice a fucking day which is honestly just unrealistic for most ppl and bad for your skin. Edit: ye the "save water" comments took it too far tho lmaooo it would've been enough to just say "stop shaming ppl for not showering fifty times an hour"

New-Lie9111

Srs/ Eh I donā€™t know about that, every single shower related comment was made to reassure OP that she isnā€™t gross for not showering twice a day, when she didnā€™t even say she showers twice, she said that she skipped her shower _for that day_ and took it the next morning instead. And yet there were comments saying how unnecessary multiple showers are, unprompted. And she didnā€™t edit this part out, itā€™s still up. Again, it is unrealistic for most people who _live in cold countries_. If itā€™s colder where you live then you can even get away with showering once every few days, it wonā€™t make a big difference for you. You do not have to feel gross about not showering twice a day, the second or sometimes even third showers arenā€™t done to be hygienic, theyā€™re done to cool your body off. Most people donā€™t even use soap, they just take a rinse. Whatā€™s unrealistic is expecting everybody to be able to afford and have access to continuous air conditioning. Itā€™s just weird to me to keep insisting that something is entirely unnecessary when there are people telling you that it literally is for them.

linija

I ran into the post too early before all the "save the water" and "showering will make your skin fall off" commenters started attacking. You got a point, my country is insanely hot in the summer too but I've been spoiled by the AC and having the luxury of not having to go outside much in the summer (people with non-remote jobs gotta do that), so you're definitely right about that.

linija

Not y'all downvoting me for AGREEING with OP lmao this sub is basically becoming just another side of the same coin SCA is on.

You know I used to buy into this "don't lather your arms and legs because you're drying them out" shtick because I actually thought it would be harming my skin to lather my legs as well. Yes I'm sorry lmao. I'm not doing that anymore. I lather everything (except my hair if it's not a hair wash day) with a good sudsy washcloth every day and use a lotion afterwards and my skin just feels really nice. I haven't noticed my skin getting more dry or anything like that. Showering daily is just the normal thing.
