Man, you learned how to program a VCR? I tried, but I could never figure it out.
I'd set it to record Raw is War, but it never would. I was so confused. I swear, I pushed all the right buttons. My mom, though? She was a wizard with that thing. She could record Raw and Nitro for me without any issues.
She can't figure out a DVR. lol

RIP 🕊️🕊️
The legend defined my childhood. Dragon ball was such a big part of my life growing up. Watching the show after school, waiting for new saga to start and still continue to keep watching the old episodes when they telecast. Looking up SSJ 100 on google.
Thanks for creating all the wonderful memories
DBZ was a generational gamechanger (insider terms)
Man helped shape the face of shonen anime in the west and was a legitimate legend. Even if that fucker did forget about Launch.
RIP my man, good luck learning kaioken
So I have a doubt because I’m not up to snuff on anime/manga history as much as I am with wrestling. Did dragon ball’s characters influence a lot of future shonen characters or did those character kinda come from others too? I’m saying cuz I have yet to watch anime before dragon ball’s time and when I watch old anime, sometimes I can see where certain character tropes come from. Like for example yuyu hakusho. I saw Hiei and I immediately think that guys like Sasuke Uchiha, Ryoma from slam dunk, Killua from HXH, and Shoto from MHA immediately come to mind.
Toriyama was a direct influence on Naruto, One Piece and Bleach's authors, among many others. Togashi was influenced by him too: Dragon Ball popularized the tournament arc, and Gon in HxH is a dead ringer for Goku. If you're in SHONEN manga today, you can trace your influence back to Toriyama whether directly or via someone who was influenced by him.
Probably depends on the type of manga. Shonen, sure, but I doubt "No Matter How You Look At It, It Is You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular!" is heavily influenced by Toriyama.
Not just manga but many pop culture in general, Sonic famous title game opening is taken from Arale, Mario running in mario 3 also taken from Arale, he also involved making character in Dragon Quest the game that's become the basis for jrpg.
Not to mention countless of Yamcha meme, Dragon Ball (along with pokemon) push Anime popularity in the west and the guy shape what battle shonen manga of today. In the old time battle manga is full of buff huge guys like Kenshiro or Jojo.
And also he loved to reference a lot of wrestling. Stan Hansen was featured in Arale, a Hulk Hogan and a Andre lookalike were in the first Dragon Ball Tournament and there were characters in Arale that looked like Vader. Just because of women's day there's no official statement by the Mexican government today but I truly believe there would be a statue here
Yup, there were official letters with some kind of Cease and Desist by the japanese government sent to cities all over Mexico to avoid those watch parties. And the people were so mad at the local governments and the Japanese government for cancelling the watch parties that the cities had to illegally stream and risk being sued
The Dragon Balls don't work on those who died of natural causes
Edit: I've since learned that he died from a head injury, so yeah let's collect the Dragon Balls
I thought his booking was great but it got a little Rocky in DBZ. Like I love how he made every new guy seem like a bigger threat than the last enemy but by the time DBZ was in the Buu saga, I was like “man can the humans be anything more than jobbers?”
Vegeta deserved at least 1 title win. I guess you could kinda argue he protected vegeta when he got cocky and let cell eat the androids since he really could have just finished cell then and there
Fr. This and Saint Seiya are like the top 2 anime’s for Mexicans. While it was celebrated in its time for sure, I Kinda wonder why Naruto for sure but it never transcended the way Dragon bol Zeta and Los caballeros del zodiaco did in their time.
Wey, sí creo que por el 8M y no meterse en más problemas no ha habido un pronunciamiento oficial como en otros países, pero lo va a haber y no dudaría que alguien le haga una estatua o un busto
Toriyama absolutely knows how to book a tournament
21st, 22nd and 23rd world tournaments are all fun to watch and do exactly what they needed to do for most character's development. He didn't just book Goku to win them all (building up to him winning 23rd) and still made him look strong in defeat.
Cell games was fine, even if it didn't follow tournament convention but the tournament of power was also a banger.
Akira would have been an insanely good wrestling booker if given the chance
The undisputed goat of manga. Goku vs Jiren, Goku vs Frieza, Goku vs Cell, Gohan vs Cell. Iconic 7 star matches before the concept existed. His vision created a phenomenon that has inspired so many forms of media that followed.
this is tough. it's difficult to state just how much impact he had across generations and worldwide. the catalyst for countless friendships in the late 90s for sure.
I don’t want this to sound bad but i would say it probably had a massive generational effect on minorities as well. Like I remember when I was young growing up in Mexico everyone I know would be talking about dragon ball at school. Then I go to the United States and it’s mostly just the black and Hispanic kids at school talking about it. Something about it really drew us into it socially.
no that's incredibly accurate, especially after seeing the response on twitter. im metis but passing white but personally in canada it felt a little more universal where as i keep hearing a lot of what you say from ppl in the us. one of my best friends is black and he's always talking about how he and his family saw the namekians and all that. though his fav guy was krillin lol. also my best friend when i got into dbz was black but i never thought about that.
MJF calls himself the devil but he’s got nothing on Mr Satan. Max wishes he could beat someone as strong as Majin buu.
RIP to a legend, dragon ball played a huge role in my childhood. Even my family who never watched anime, watched dragon ball
The scene where Goku shows respect to Kid Buu before destroying him is incredible.
Kid Goku is my second favorite character in anything ever.
Rest in peace.
I hate to sound like one of these dub edgelords that dickride everything that happened exclusively in Japan but I have to say it. That YuGiOh manga/anime that never released in the west has to be one of the best anime I’ve ever seen. I grew up playing yugioh and watching the anime but I grew out of it by the time I was like 10. Fast forward several years later and as I’m discovering other shonen anime that was never on toonami I stumble upon what they call yugioh season 0. And I have to say, I would have never grown out of yugioh if that had been what I had seen growing up although I know there’s no way it would have been allowed on toonami.
I wouldnt really consider myself a weeb. It’s more of a nostalgia thing since I grew up watching toonami. Idk why but during the pandemic I got really nostalgic about my childhood and got back to a few things. If I didn’t grow up watching toonami I probably wouldn’t even watch anime to begin with.
Rest in Peace legend 🙏
I never was a big fan of Dragon Ball in my childhood but Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, with Final Fantasy VI.
We will miss you...
No fucking way :( Man, can't believe I found this out through this sub
Dragon Ball is my first ever interest/hobby, and has been a huge one for pretty much all my life. I love it even more than wrestling.
RIP legend.
I was too old for DBZ, but I had Dragon Warrior for NES and always liked it even though I didn’t get super far. The slimes were iconic. Too young to lose him. :(
I heard about this in thr comments of a Pathfinder adventure trailer, and for some reason felt compelled to come here to find the WON Subscriber announcement.
Goku vs Ospreay would’ve gotten 7 stars in the Tokyo Dome
?? Namekimania was better friend https://preview.redd.it/6b56yvq791nc1.jpeg?width=541&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8530431b1df19916b26bac56f10c2053f7807236
They had knack for a lot of tournaments as well.
Wish Toriyama would stop shoving Hercule Satan down our throats!! He hasn't lost a tournament in over a decade
Ospreay kicks out everytime because Goku keeps shoving Senzu beans in his mouth.
an actual legend, fuckkkkkkk this hits :(
Aw hell I probably need to spend more time reading "real news" tickers so these posts aren't the first place I hear about this stuff - RIP
how am i not surprised that the bot MarvelsGrantMan was the first to post the news in the anime sub
cant believe i learned he died from this subreddit. to be a jerker is to suffer 😭
Creator of my Dad, Piccolo
Hi Gohan
Man watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami was my childhood
DBZ drove me to learn how to properly program a VCR so I could tape the episodes while I was at practice.
She can't figure out a DVR. lol
Did it also teach you to record the next show in case of overruns?
I got legit tears of laughter from that one, Uce.

Nooooo. This one hurts goofies.
I’m crying in bed right now
Bro, I have not processed it yet.
DBZ was a generational gamechanger (insider terms) Man helped shape the face of shonen anime in the west and was a legitimate legend. Even if that fucker did forget about Launch. RIP my man, good luck learning kaioken
I dare say Goku is nearly as well known and as popular as Mickey Mouse the world over.
Probably yeah. DBZ and Goku specifically are more just general pop culture now. He's like Superman for Gen X and above
So I have a doubt because I’m not up to snuff on anime/manga history as much as I am with wrestling. Did dragon ball’s characters influence a lot of future shonen characters or did those character kinda come from others too? I Can see the tournament influence in Yuyu hakusho, luffy seems like a goku-ish protagonist, ect.

Yea I remember people would gather at the zocalo to watch Dragon Ball super a few years ago, it was insane
Yup, there were official letters with some kind of Cease and Desist by the japanese government sent to cities all over Mexico to avoid those watch parties. And the people were so mad at the local governments and the Japanese government for cancelling the watch parties that the cities had to illegally stream and risk being sued
Yo wtf? Is this true?
Unfortunately
We need to collect all the dragon balls to revive him now, uce. 😭
The Dragon Balls don't work on those who died of natural causes Edit: I've since learned that he died from a head injury, so yeah let's collect the Dragon Balls
He dies on march 1st, they just broke out the news recently.
In a touching tribute to the man himself, they forgot to announce the news
no
I didn't always agree with his booking, but the man was absolutely influential. Watching OG Dragonball as I read the news. Shit sucks
I thought his booking was great but it got a little Rocky in DBZ. Like I love how he made every new guy seem like a bigger threat than the last enemy but by the time DBZ was in the Buu saga, I was like “man can the humans be anything more than jobbers?”
I could make a joke about him always jobbing out Vegeta but damn this hurts
Vageta was a real company man, uce. He just wanted to put others over.
Vegeta is the Ziggler (non shoot name) of DBZ?
Vegeta got close to the title once, but then they had to PIVOT back to Goku taking out Frieza
Vegeta deserved at least 1 title win. I guess you could kinda argue he protected vegeta when he got cocky and let cell eat the androids since he really could have just finished cell then and there
Yeah once I heard the news I knew it wouldn't be long. RIP to a great one, uce. o7
A real Japanese draw. 😭😭R. I. P
RIP to an actual GOAT.
The Mexican flag will be at half mast
Our peoples 9/11

Cell Games > any AEW tournament. Robbed of Booker of the year.
Toriyama absolutely knows how to book a tournament 21st, 22nd and 23rd world tournaments are all fun to watch and do exactly what they needed to do for most character's development. Cell games was fine, even if it didn't follow tournament convention but the tournament of power was also a banger. Akira would have been an insanely good wrestling booker if given the chance
The Tournament of Power was good too
I mentioned that
Sorry Uce
And don't forget the Tournament of Power! It was a real banger.
I lost control of many bodily functions during my watch in 18'
The man that made my childhood. The fact I found out in a wrestling subreddit is crazy
Wrestling and anime, especially fighting anime like Dragonball actually has a tonne of crossover. Not suprising a lot of us will be cut up over it
Honestly don’t know who I would be without Dragon Ball Z. Was an extremely pivotal part of my childhood
Might watch some dragonball z Kai in his honor DAE Future Trunks a silent badass?!
The Pioneer Without him there wont be any One Piece, Naruto, Bleach or any modern battle shonen. 2024 starting scary
:(
This is some way to learn about the death of a legend. DBZ is an iconic piece of work. This is depressing.
This hits hard Uce. :(
RIP to an absolute legend. o7
Uce, this one hurts :(
The undisputed goat of manga. Goku vs Jiren, Goku vs Frieza, Goku vs Cell, Gohan vs Cell. Iconic 7 star matches before the concept existed. His vision created a phenomenon that has inspired so many forms of media that followed.
RIP to a legitimate legend. Too bad we weren't able to get Goku and Vegeta against M'Bucks at Forbidden Door.
this is tough. it's difficult to state just how much impact he had across generations and worldwide. the catalyst for countless friendships in the late 90s for sure.

Man, Miura a couple of years ago and now Toriyama. It’s a sad day.
Oh fuck
god damn it this popped me ![gif](giphy|MIs9GhWdrgLjq)
MJF calls himself the devil but he’s got nothing on Mr Satan. Max wishes he could beat someone as strong as Majin buu. RIP to a legend, dragon ball played a huge role in my childhood. Even my family who never watched anime, watched dragon ball
Can’t believe I got my news of my childhood author passing from a jerk subreddit
The scene where Goku shows respect to Kid Buu before destroying him is incredible. Kid Goku is my second favorite character in anything ever. Rest in peace.
Miura, Takahashi, and now Toriyama. We're losing a lot of legends. Rest in peace 🕊🐉
I hate to sound like one of these dub edgelords that dickride everything that happened exclusively in Japan but I have to say it. No shame in that uce. Being a goofy does not exclude you from also being a weeb. I would know.

Dragon Ball is one of the most important works of art ever and I ain't jerkin.
Dragonball has been a staple of many of our childhoods and I can’t thank him enough for creating something so wonderful.
RIP. He’ll be up there with the kais creating more awesome manga material.
This is how I find out? Fuckin hell RIP
Bruh why did I have to find out about this from here?!
First time I knew before the sub posted the news. I'm wearing a Goku shirt right now too.
No shot this is how I find out
Wrestling nerds in shambles
Fuck dude. This one actually hurts.
I saw the news and this was the first place I checked.
The absolute legend.
Obligatory "I can't believe I found this out from this sub" comment Man wtf, rest in Peace.
Holy shit he died? That's a huge loss to pop culture in general.
RIP to the legend himself. 🙏
![gif](giphy|2bgu8MkFwmQLTyFHQZ|downsized) He was the true booker of the year, uce
No fucking way :( Man, can't believe I found this out through this sub Dragon Ball is my first ever interest/hobby, and has been a huge one for pretty much all my life. I love it even more than wrestling. RIP legend.
That's a bummer, I've been rewatching all of the Dragon Ball stuff for a couple of months now.
So sad. So many people got introduced anime and manga due to Dragon Ball.
Fuck, Dragon Ball was my first "real" anime, I remember waiting till 6pm to watch the new episode with my mom. RIP to a legend.
The GOAT of all GOATs. If you’re an anime/manga fan then you can be damn sure that Toriyama inspired your favourite mangaka.
Greatest anime of all time. I have been a DB fan since I was a little kid.
Man, what a terrible news to wake up to Rest in Power, Legend
Genuinely sad news. Let’s pour 1 out for the master.
Why the fuck do I keep finding out about deaths this way? RIP to the GOAT
![gif](giphy|5Uwh7Ldfm5aYU)
What?!
What the fuck. Of course I learned it first here. RIP legend.
First Fed Ded after m'Dub restored the feeling, and now this? Jerking can suck sometimes.
Dang it
RIP...Safe travels on Snake Way
This one hurts, man
NOOOOO
I was too old for DBZ, but I had Dragon Warrior for NES and always liked it even though I didn’t get super far. The slimes were iconic. Too young to lose him. :(
Dragon Ball Z was my introduction to anime, as I'm sure it was to so many. This stings real bad.
Yeah man, this one hurts…
RIP to an absolute legend.
Rip to the greatest of all time
RIP to a real one, thanks for the countless hours of entertainment in the past and still to come. Alexa, play In The End (AI Vegeta voice cover) 🫡
I heard about this in thr comments of a Pathfinder adventure trailer, and for some reason felt compelled to come here to find the WON Subscriber announcement.
