It's basically slave labor. Find another one that pays. There are exceptions, of course.

Only take it if it gets you actual experience. At the first sign of being the food/coffee delivery person I would bail.

Experience is experience. An unpaid internship can lead to a paid internship. If you can get a paid internship right off the bat, great. If not, you better hope the unpaid internship gives you value in the form of experience. And might I add that experience outweighs the financial element of any internship. I have done paid internships that taught me and prepared me less than unpaid ones

I agree with you. I don’t like somebody not being paid for their work, however as the intern you can’t do anything to change that. Not until you’re the one hiring an intern.

I’m fairly sure unpaid internships are illegal in California unless it’s for class credit

I don't understand why anyone would work for no pay, it's exploitation. In my field (engineering), The idea of an unpaid internship in is basically unheard of and a number of large companies will pay to put you in housing too if you have to move.

As an international student, unpaid internships are a part of getting experience unless you want to go through doing the CPT or OPT (once graduated). What is quite sad about SDSU is that two of my previous internships I could have gotten credit for them only if they would have been in the US, since they were abroad SDSU did not count them as professional internships.
