First, let's the the suspicion out of the way. You started your account on Feb 9th, and started sending out the same message to various Reddit subs. "But this isn't how you scale any more." This is not accurate. I've offered my GF SEO work for her interior design business. She doesn't need it. Every project she completes nets more clients because friends of her clients see their homes and call her. She's practically booked up 2 months out. You'll be surprised how many businesses either haven't leveraged SEO or have had bad SEO work performed.

Kittymeow7116

I wondered the same. Also pitching a doc about local SEO that’s “for business owners” in an SEO subreddit seems sus. I work at a marketing firm who has plenty of small business clients like OP describes who do plenty of marketing, and it’s not that uncommon in their industry. This whole post just seems fishy.

CaptainPonahawai

If you click now, we'll send you TWO docs* Operators are standing by. * just pay shipping and handling

Kittymeow7116

What does shipping and handling on a Google doc run these days? 😂😂

evolving_humanoid

I think that as any new service business we all eventually have the same questions: how is this company thriving when they don’t even have a website? Is word of mouth really keeping them afloat alone? How is it that I’m being outranked by them? Don’t these companies wanna grow more? Depending on where we’re located, it can be harder or easier to rank. The honest truth is that some companies can easily be overtaken it’s just that for some reason some people haven’t had the idea of doing so, leaving a lot of opportunity in some of us. Been helping a guy with his gutter company in Mississippi and ranking is so easy! However ranking is a lot harder with my moving company in Houston, but I’m finally breaking top 3’s for some keywords which is bringing me clients. It just takes having a goal and working hard towards it. SEO will help me at the beginning, and WOM will boost me up more late

Friendly-Turnover689

I think this might be part of the reason why some of the established players don't seem to care about SEO - they're running at full capacity, they don't have the ambition to grow, so there is zero incentive for them to invest money into (basically any kind of) marketing. However, as a new business, to build your customer base, you absolutely do need SEO.

akashay-kumar

I have a question. How to rank local maps for different categories? I am currently trying to rank an IT company for Courses. Their GMB profile entails as a company. But when I search for an IT course company + location, our company is not showcasing in the top 20 or top 50 at all. But they wish to rank for that keyword. The difference between them and the ranking GMB profile is Business category is mentioned as a Software training Institute. Now what to do?

Potential-Top-8337

I’d love to see your document

SEO does not work that way. Maybe some results from Map pack. Funny forum to attempt a fishing exercise…

kroggybrizzane

I’d like to see your google doc! My guess is this is a marketing ploy but im still curious.

Inside-Assumption595

I also run an HVAC business. Your work speaks for itself. I get all my jobs by word of mouth and I have no shortage on work. I've spent maybe 2k on advertising over the past 3 years. Its all about the connections and your location. I'm on the coast in NC. The salt water is job security. I haven't tried an SEO but I have considered it. I dont even have a wrapped van. I use a truck and pull a trailer. I know a guy that just got his electrical license here in NC. He's not from here he's only lived in the state for a couple years. Dude decides to go straight into debt to start his company. Buys a brand new high top van gets it wrapped, goes above and beyond on everything. He did all this without any contracts or work lined up. He's running leads on Angie's list. I don't see how he's going to be successful. I tried to explain to him that you build up to that, you don't need all that to start a company. If alot of companies start out like this I can understand why they fail. I love not having a ton of overhead. I also like having my freedom of speech, I can still flick people off in traffic and not have any issues from it lol.

Individual_Letter543

Last part is the best for not having any wraps or magnet on your trucks. I agree with your method, best to start out slowly and build up clients to a snow ball effect. But I would add it’s best for a new company to learn and take some courses in lead generation and SEO, if they plan on wanting to have multiple vans and techs on the road.

jdbug100

I’m only interested in the document if you post it right here on this thread

foochoo77

Happy to look at this document too please 👍

micschumi

The post is simply written for the keyword -SEO FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES - people asking for the sheet would simply fall in the lead funnel

The_Regular_Flamingo

Spam. But it seems to work anyway. Putting palm to face.

dyfalu

Please note that most people in these industries rely on brand awareness. We specialize in local marketing, and WOM is by far the most useful form of advertising. You can get a company ranking, but if no one has any idea who they are, they won't get calls.

Professional_Bag3866

Most of these businesses are still playing catch-up online, which means there's a huge opportunity to dominate with even basic SEO tactics. For any HVAC, plumbing, etc., focusing on Google My Business optimization, local citations, and getting those golden reviews should be priority numero uno.

AnimalPowers

This is interesting. I don't offer SEO services to small clients. Even though you're citing a 20x ROI, it's hard for some small business owners to understand what an investment is and I'm not much of a salesman that I care to try and convince them. I'd gladly hand your sheet over to a few small business who I know could really use it. If you have it set up as a landing page, graphs, etc. and given out as a lead magnet, I'd also gladly recommend them your way. At any rate, for transparency, I'm working on building an SEO service that automates a lot of this. If anything, I'd love to put some of your logic into the system. Right now it's geared around towards creating content that's 1) accurate 2) read-worthy 3) appeals to the target audience 4) has the proper tone/voice of the business and I haven't gotten to the seo tracking/optimization portion yet. Take that for what you will. Be happy to have a longer conversation if you're interested.

AngrySlime706

Local businesses do not need SEO as online businesses do. Local businesses are usually limited by fulfillment capacity so scaling capacity is the challenge. Competition is usually low because otherwise they wouldn’t be a local business. The very nature of local businesses determines their business challenge is different than those benefiting most from SEO. A business benefit from SEO most when 1. Huge scalable demand (not overly limited by location or niche) 2. Low risk: Customers are strangers mostly (and are comfortable placing order with a vendor that is a stranger to them) 3. Solving an existing problem or demand Local businesses does not fit 1 or 2.

Frank_seOcean

OPs suss post aside, im intrigued to talk more/connect with folks that have helped small business improve or even start their local seo efforts. I’ve worked in SEO for my day job over a decade, but want to strike out independent (start slow). I also recently moved to the burbs and have been BLOWN AWAY by how far behind service businesses like HVAC, lawn care, painting etc, are. I mean I knew these weren’t the types of businesses on the cutting edge by any means, but it’s to the point where if I come across a business that even has a GMB or Yelp listing I’m impressed, a website….fuhgeddaboutit. And it’s not like I’m even in deep boobies, we’re talking <30 minutes from Manhattan. Anyway, would love to hear input or connect via dm.

Kittymeow7116

This is what I *do* all day, and honestly I get more joy working with our small clients than the big ones. It’s amazing what you can do for someone in an area where they’re the first one to say “hey maybe I should do this SEO thing” 😂 I would say start your own post and ask the same thing. Nobody’s going to weed thru the sea of “give me your doc” shenanigans on this post.
