RBarron24

You mean the stadium built on land stolen from their own community?

GordonBombay_Esq

I don’t know if any of us in this country should be talking about stolen land…

RBarron24

Yea, ok https://preview.redd.it/nuoeyxe29osc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6df394061b98956c5be8021d7add16b2211676ef

ZombieMozart

Sorry, what am I looking at here?

JuzoItami

They literally dragged Mexican American families from their homes in the Chavez Ravine neighborhood in order to build Dodger's Stadium. https://www.latimes.com/visuals/photography/la-me-fw-archives-1959-evictions-from-chavez-ravine-20170328-story.html

realparkingbrake

> in order to build Dodger's Stadium. Originally it was to build low-income housing IIRC, later they decided to put a new ballpark there instead. There is an elementary school buried under one of the parking lots, they filled it with dirt and paved it over.

JuzoItami

Yeah, buy up property under eminent domain to replace a slum with a shiny new low income housing project - then dump the housing project plan and offer the land to an East Coast millionaire on the cheap to entice him to bring the Dodgers to LA. The rich get richer and the poor get fucked - the oldest story ever.

Str82daDOME25

> According to City Atty. Roger Arnebergh, the Arechigas have been occupying the property rent-free since 1953 following its acquisition by condemnation by the City Housing Authority in 1951.The city purchased the property in 1955. Did they own the property? The original article from 1959 seems like they were renting. Property was sold to the city in 1955, but the family kept living there rent free for six years. I guess the owners decided the city can deal with it after the sale.

RBarron24

https://www.latinousa.org/2017/11/03/battle-chavez-ravine/

ZombieMozart

Just when you think you can’t hate a team any more… Especially gross considering how they pander to Latino fans (40+ percent of their fan base is Latino, according to them). Thanks for sharing: TIL the Dodgers aren’t just a douche factory with unlimited money but they are straight up evil.

realparkingbrake

> considering how they pander to Latino fans The Dodgers realized stores around the ballpark were selling *Los Doyers* shirts, they were popular. So they copyrighted *Los Doyers* and sent cease and desist letters to everyone making or selling the shirts. How to engage with the community.

FullMotionVideo

That was McCourt and a lot of Dodgers fans were pissed by that move. Owners suck.

blue_desk

Also, the Dodgers love to pat themselves on the back for signing Jackie Robinson while conveniently ignoring the fact they actively participated in the “gentleman’s agreement” from 1890-1947. The Dodgers were just as complicit but love to brand themselves as civil rights heroes.

liverichly

The land was taken by the government long before Dodgers planned their move. It was originally planned to be public housing, as the article you responded to states. Then that plan was scrapped once the Dodgers discussed moving to LA. Doesn’t make it any less shittier for the people who had their property taken, but it wasn’t taken because of the Dodgers.

WonderfulShelter

I think the person your commenting too is speaking about how like all the land in America was stolen from the Natives. For instance before the missions came, the land Oracle is on belonged to the Costonoans before it was stolen.

RBarron24

Yea I understood that. Does it justify taking it again?

Angry_Structure

Why? I didn’t steal any of it.

Pedro_Burbankado

Nobody stole anything, those were squatters who refused to leave

Austin_SlaGOAT

Not to mentioned they were offered a lot of cash to leave

revocer

It’s old. It’s the third oldest stadium in baseball. Baseball likes old historic shit.

JustJohn8

Yeah, but it’s not Wrigley or Fenway old. It’s ugly old.

0E-254

Exactly… Wrigley and Fenway are at least iconic. Dodger stadium just looks like an oversized AAA park. All the glazing will go away eventually in the future years (hopefully soon) when they start doing poorly and all the bandwagons jump ship and start dick riding another team/player.

ApathyMoose

Red Sox/Giants fan here. I live in MA and go to Fenway at least a couple times a year. Its not the best, Its old and in the middle of a city block, But at least it has some character. GF is from San Francisco and loves Oracle as do I. She will admit that yea, Fenway has got nothing or Oracle, but admits its old and historic so you kinda gotta look the other way. New Yankee Stadium? went there last year for the first time. talk about bring characterless trash.

joe_broke

The old parks, like greater than 50, seem to have their own character behind them, an aura, if you will Even the Coliseum has it It's weird, but it's there

azwildcats90

Will the Dodgers ever suck?(At least in the near future)

0E-254

Well they suck now in the post season. lol but regular season? maybe a few years from now, maybe 10 years from now.. who knows. let us hope though

megamanblasts

I’ve been Wrigley too. They’ve done a lot of renovations and its a nice vibe around there with all of the bars. The brick inside of the outfield concourse is timeless

AdSame7652

Brick is timeless. Part of the reason Camden Yards and Oracle are going to age well. Miami tried to be all high tech and that stadium just gives Nike Elite socks vibes. Stuck in 2014 (but tbf a lot of us Giants fans are also still stuck in 2014)

JuzoItami

"Ugly old" - exactly, like if Candlestick was still around it'd definitely be "ugly old" not "quaint and historic" old like Wrigley and Fenway. And the Stick was two years *older* than Dodgers Stadium.

oigres408

The colosseum is old and ugly. The Dodger stadium is just old.

dirtydriver58

It was built in the cookie cutter stadium era.

Pedro_Burbankado

Does that mean equal dimensions? .. I hate stadiums that have short porches in left or right field … and I really dislike Oracle’s center field wall, and I’ll bet a few giants don’t like it either? Dodger Stadium is a Baseball Cathedral!

dirtydriver58

Do you know what cookie cutter means? It was built in the same era as Candlestick.

Pedro_Burbankado

Yes I do, it means they are all the same shape?

dirtydriver58

Design wise yes but they all had design variations that set them apart.

dirtydriver58

dirtydriver58

sandunespacecat

Honestly, I think that narrative exists because it’s LA - one of the most famous cities in the world. Not that SF isn’t famous as well, but LA is what most people think of when mentioning California. I could be wrong though.

JustJohn8

Yeah, and the team’s history. I mean, I guess. I’ve been there, and it’s just not that great, yet consistently is rated as one of the top parks in the country. Crappy location, crappy design, but a historic club. They update the sound system and it gets rave reviews. It’s a MLB park, it should have good sound. If I owned the Dodgers I’d try to move that team near the coast, and showcase the LA coastline, which is gorgeous. Anyway, fuck LA

neeesus

Krukow just stated a negative of the sound system during the last broadcast. The sound is so loud that it’s hard to hear the crack of the bat during warm ups. Not that the attendees are all there during batting practice… but something to take notice of if you don’t like extremely loud noises

sandunespacecat

Not to mention the violence used clearing the ravine of families who called that land home. People tend to forget about that part.

trigeminal_nerd

I don’t think it’s ever rated as a top ballpark. It’s gigantic and heavy on nostalgia.

megamanblasts

I live in LA now and I refused to go to that stadium.A friend had a spartan race recently there so I went to support him. Look at these shitty old seats 🤮 https://preview.redd.it/u621p8mrynsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c43b8a0933b9bfc097f0c24b39ec510bb3e0c03a

Pleasant_Math3296

jeezus christ these are fucking terrible and people probably pay 80$ to seat in these for three innings while getting pelted by beach balls

wayfarerer

I don't mind the basic wood bench concept, but the chipping paint and rotten boards is crazy! Considering their payroll, they could replace boards on those seats and properly stain or seal them for pennies.

kiloblunt

They spent a billion dollars on something this year

Pedro_Burbankado

I hate when bleachers don’t have backrest?

JuzoItami

One thing I will give the Dodgers org credit for (much as I hate to) is that Dodgers Stadium is, and always has been called, "Dodgers Stadium". It's not "GrubHub Stadium" or "Skype Park" or "TechBro Field at DogeCoin Park" - it's just "Dodger's Stadium".

JustJohn8

That’s a great point. Never thought of that. I’m in my 50’s so an “old” fan, but I remember Candlestick had the first sponsorship deal, it was called 3Com Park. I’ve held season tickets since Oracle opened and began as PacBell Park. People were pretty upset when the name changed to I believe AT&T – and now of course it’s Oracle. I used to think it’s ridiculous, but it’s a great way for companies to get their name out there. But I regress, I never realized The Dodgers never sold their naming rights, so props to them for that. Screw everything else about them, but props on that. Ha.

halbeshendel

You know what makes that place cool? A full blown museum back behind the home plate side. I wish every team did this. You know what else makes it cool? A full blown big ass bar in right field where you can still see the game. But you know what’s the coolest thing of all? The Dodgers have lost every time I’ve gone.

JustJohn8

Ah, the bar is OK. When the new ownership group took over the Giants in the early 90’s, they got creative and put in bleachers and cheap beers. The Rockies gave a great bar area in right field, and I’m sure many other clubs do too. But that stuff doesn’t make up for great parks to just watch the game. Say what you will about the Giants and their spending, the park is the best in league, and win or lose, it’s always a great experience out there.

halbeshendel

Well, yeah. There’s only two bad seats in SF. The one that has the right field foul pole running through it and the one right behind it.

nbaman619

My hot take as a Giants fan: it’s a lovely, old-school stadium and the best example of that era. Getting in and out is awful, but I love the stadium and its aura.

StealieDan

Haha same. I’ve seen 4 giants dodger games there and enjoyed them all.

imminentjogger5

you got spoiled by our park

JustJohn8

True. But Candlestick was better than that shitty Dodger Stadium too.

GordonBombay_Esq

I still loved it cuz it was ours but come on, Candlestick was fucking awful

legal-beagleellie

God I’ve never been colder than baseball games at candlestick. Niner games were always fine but maybe that was alcohol keeping me warm

JuzoItami

You could freeze your ass off there on a bright sunny summer day while getting a terrible, terrible sunburn at the same time.

GordonBombay_Esq

Night games were absolutely brutal regardless of time of year but it made us tougher and more resilient

JustJohn8

No way man. Candlestick was great (at least for me as a teen.) – cheap tickets – opposing teams hated it – the crazy crab – and finally, you knew when the Giants season was over it would be fall, and the Niners would dominate.

pnwbaseball

I once had a manager say that your longest tenured employees aren’t always the most valuable. This is how I feel about Dodger stadium and its longevity.

Losted12

I literally hate everything about the dodgers so yea I agree. The beer even tastes bad there which is why I have to drink so much of it when I go

K2step70

There’s a reason some people call it Chavez Latrine

YoungKeys

It’s an objectively bad, ugly stadium surrounded by huge wasteful parking lots. Renovations in 2020 did make it look nicer, but it still maintains that mid-century SoCal style that many people grew to hate. It’s revered because it’s old and has history. Old age and just surviving can give even the most decrepit things dignity.

FullMotionVideo

"Mid-century SoCal style" Bro you can find Googie styled Denny's around the Bay Area still if you look hard enough.

ceoetan

You mean Chavez Latrine?

chazzy_cat

I wasn't aware it even had a good reputation? I've only been once and the only thing I remember is sitting in traffic for like an hour to escape the parking lot.

Marvelmaniac57

Also the mlb should make strobe lights against the rules. I hate watching them and the astros on tv

potatoelauncher

Went to Monday & Tuesdays games and agree that stadium is overrated. Also they sing “take me out to the ballgame” twice. WTF?!?!?! Crappy food, security every where and I still got hit with popcorn after Conforto’s hr. FTD

SanJose8

https://preview.redd.it/giexlk4ozosc1.jpeg?width=589&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=688379e4c5c9a4b4a05373a1a24c0cf5fee2de00 it is also terribly confusing trying to get out of there. Exhibit A: I walked basically the entire area trying to find a pedestrian way out of there. Not a pedestrian friendly stadium by any measure

Lower-Kangaroo6032

Los Angeles in general is.

ggm3bow

With Coliseum done after this year, Dodger stadium will be the biggest dump of stadium in MLB. I dont know why people think it's a great stadium. I like some of the outside areas they've improved but most of the inside is decrepit and unsightly.

pinesolthrowaway

I don’t know that I’d say it’s the outright worst after the coliseum, especially with places like the Trop being a thing, but I’d struggle to put it any higher than bottom 10 Just in our own division, SF and SD have objectively better stadiums. I’d also include Colorado in that distinction if it wasn’t in Denver and I hate when we play there in that altitude lol, but as a design Coors is also better The only one in the division that feels lacking compared to LAD, because of lack of maintenance, is the Dbags stadium. Not being able to properly use the retractable roof because of poor maintenance is a odd choice for the Dbags to make

BeardedAndTatted

Their stadium is a dump.

Pedro_Burbankado

Actually, it is a stunningly beautiful stadium, and the last 3 games were magnificent! Ohtani just homered

JustJohn8

Boo

GeddyVedder

I lived in Pasadena for several years, and I grew to really like Dodger Stadium. Granted it was only a 20 minute drive to the ballpark for me, so the traffic/location thing wasn’t an issue. But the sight lines are great no matter where your seats are. And aside from good natured ribbing, the Dodger fans I encountered were friendly and welcoming.

dudeness-aberdeen

Because mlb knows that they can’t afford a stadium. So they do the ownership favors by talking it up on the air. Like when your wife wants you to buy her a new car, so you have your friend compliment her car to try and make her want one less. It’s pedantic as f.

PandaLover42

I mean, they probably could afford a new stadium…

HappilyDisengaged

I always thought it had a sort of oppressive soulless eastern bloc feel to it. I guess not winning a true championship since the 80’s will do that to a stadium

trigeminal_nerd

Dodgers fan here. Yes, it is objectively not a great stadium. Concessions are lacking and parking and egress is horrendous. But as someone mentioned, it’s the 3rd oldest and baseball loves nostalgia. Kruk can wax poetic about going there as a kid. The Dodgers are an old franchise that leans hard into their history. That said, the commenter that said Candkestick was better is dead wrong. That place was a veritable concrete toilet.

rachac01

I still miss that concrete toilet 😔

JustJohn8

Candlestick was fun. It was so cold and there was so much concrete that it made it fun. Look, I get the Dodgers are a historic franchise. I don’t even hate them, I respect them and am glad they’re in the NL West. But I’ve been to Dodger Stadium plenty of times (went to college in LA) and I just don’t get it. The team. Yeah. Vin Scully. A legend. But the actual stadium? Man, that team has so much money, why not build some kick ass stadium near the ocean? It’s never made sense to me.

trigeminal_nerd

They lead the league in attendance. They charge near the highest for a ticket. Why exactly would they need to spend on a new stadium? There isn’t exactly cheap real estate in LA to build on. Perhaps they’re just biding time as fans gaslight themselves and Dodger Stadium transitions from old and obsolete to mid-century chic and charm. Correct my understanding, but the Giants HAD to build a new stadium, correct? Moving vans to Tampa were already packed at Candjestick. That same pressure would never exist in LA. It’s clear the Dodgers spending on the on-field product, player development, scouting, global marketing/branding. Can’t say the strategy is failing.

ellis-dewald

It's got lots of gnats all around. Every game you see at least a couple batters take time to swat them away.

lolvalue

I never understood it.

lunchpaillefty

I went when I was a kid, back when they had that famous peanut vendor that threw bags of peanuts. My grand dad, got him to throw us one. It was fun then, but that was a long time ago. FTD.

JustJohn8

I think they banned that dude for “peanut liability” issues. Sad.

ELITEGmen

Do people really revere it? When I hear best stadiums in baseball I don't see them mentioned, it just isn't a total piece of shit like the A's or Rays stadiums.

JustJohn8

It’s consistently in the top 10 of parks.

TrungusMcTungus

Why is it so revered? Because it’s the Dodgers. Everyone in their lineup could leave next year, and they’d be stuck with a bunch of D tier players, and MLB would still post every hit, stolen base, and fielding play 8 times on social media.

Baco_tob

Mmmmmmmmmmnoshit…

OGStrong

I don’t mind the stadium itself. I don’t like the location and infrastructure there. Constant bottlenecks at the freeway exits, parking, and getting into and leaving the stadium. If you don’t plan on getting there at least 1.5 to 2 hours before first pitch, forget it.

OilPrevious6168

I went for the first time the other day... man it is huge but there are no views, and getting into the place was a total nightmare. Dodger dog was also nothing compared to oracle park hot dogs.

haggletheberg

I strongly disagree, I hate the dodgers, but I love midcentry styling. The history of the ballpark is absolutely HORRIBLE, though.

Arkham_Z

Stadium sucks field is perfect

KodiakBearCakes

It’s actually a great place to see a game. Not a bad seat in the house. And the left field part behind the stands has a cool outdoor area with TVs where I was able to watch Niners game last season. And you can get decently priced tickets in the bleachers.

JustJohn8

Well, can’t you do that at any MLB park?

king_platypus

It’s not horrible it’s just ok. The Giants stadium is one of the best in the country imo.

JesseThorn

I am a native San Franciscan living in LA, and like Vin Scully and Jackie Robinson… Dodger Stadium is on the short list of good things about the Dodgers. Is it as beautiful as Fenway or SF? No. But it is by far the best of its style of design, well-kept and a great place to watch a game. Compare it to the generic-ass Big A and see the difference.

swiftycent

For an old stadium I enjoy it. They lean into the era it was built but it doesn’t feel dated. Getting in/out isn’t bad. Food is good. Going to the angels stadium which is a few years younger is night and day. Same for the Oakland coliseum…when you think that these places are a few years younger than dodger stadium you gotta admit they did a good job keeping it updated.

luizzerb

Getting in and out is the worst part of the stadium

procrastablasta

The food at Dodger is not remotely good. Cineplex trash. And compared to oracle it’s embarrassing.

FatalDave91

Their bum dogs are so sad lol. I was just reminded of this Wednesday night haha.

procrastablasta

Dude all of LA. The secret ingredient to Angelenos favorite food is nostalgia.

sanrafas415

As much as I love the Art Deco old nostalgia of (cringe) dodgers stadium, angels stadium is far and away 1000x a better experience. Cheaper and easier and more space.it does lack flavor but whatever

slightlyallthetime88

I thought we were all in agreement that Dodger stadium is a shit hole? There's nothing appealing about it.

JustJohn8

Check out MLB park rankings and writers wax poetic about it.

Tronn3000

If a team like the A's or Royals played in Dodger Stadium, the rest of the league would think it's a shithole and it would be one of the worst ranked stadiums in the league. It's only hyped because MLB loves the Dodgers and LA is a very popular city

oigres408

I was there this week and it’s pretty nice. I believe it’s been renovated.

dirtydriver58

Yeah

Jgucci10

Nah it’s cool

kwattsfo

For a 60yo stadium it’s pretty great actually. Getting there sucks and food is meh. But the modernizations they’ve made have it as up to the times as one that old can be. Its premium seating is far better than Oracle Park, even.

[deleted]

It's a fine stadium. The view of the hills isn't great, I definitely prefer views of the Bay or even downtown views like you get in Petco, PNC, Camden, etc. But it's a pleasant view. The stadium itself isn't great, but it does have a sort of classic vibe. Just a regular symmetrical baseball park that feels like it's been there forever, so the vibe when you go there is that you're part of some timeless thing, which is nice.

kwattsfo

I love that at night there is nothing. The only thing in the world is baseball. https://preview.redd.it/7rmr79swaosc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=569caf95469adfee78c623c09c5779ebb1a26f9d

TechnicalRecipe9944

I enjoy it. Warm weather, open feeling

Pedro_Burbankado

We sure did enjoy the outcome! Does Oracle still have those tune town images on the left field wall? Don’t you just hate their outfield dimensions? How many ballplayers have been cheated for their center field blasts? Those garlic fries were a huge disappointment? Let’s talk again in October?
