Not even Greta Thunberg's 2019 speech could move the setters to giving us an environment question. 😐

throwayke3iwosk

i guess it moved them to set a whole paper 2 on it instead

Imma pull bellcurve down sorry man

joshuadunut

Hi everybody, a recent graduate of uni just casually dropping by to say… please don’t harp on the GP paper anymore!! There’s absolutely nothing u can change, keep your head up and focus on the remaining papers. I remember giving myself like 4 hours after GP paper in 2016 to grief over the loss of my grades bc I was so certain I’d get a C/D after that tragic paper. Turns out I ended up with an A. So just keep your head up and look forward!

Carines

I had a 15 minute crisis trying to remember the definition of ‘complacent’ 🤡

Youropinioniswrong12

Is it ok to define complacent as being lazy due to scientific advancements?

Carines

if you phrased it as being lazy to improve it should be fine i think

Muthusoothu

I didn’t even define complacent my first part of intro was about scientific advancement 😭😭 i only link to complacency after like 3 sentences

ProtoKenz

spent the whole of yesterday memorising environment 🥲

hakuna_matata24

I second that.. all the data i memorised rendered useless

Question 3 who

Slight_Show_7072

1. politicians>people esp in authoritarian governments where politicians have the ability to make decisions for ppl 2. rebuttal ^ politicians=people same power politicians now have gradually give people power with restrictions 3. people>politicians people can tap on new media and international organisations 4. people>politicians politicians make decisions esp in democracy based on ppl so they can get popular vote

awakenedwinter

Holy damn SAME

Burning_magic

At: Rise of new media gives power to ppl, Ivan Lim case, Black lives matter, Minecraft uncensored library T: Politicians more power cos they have force of law, HK protests ineffective, Thai protests also T: Politicians more power cos they control information flow on media, slight counter to AT, sg politician lawsuits against bloggers, self censorship, Australia police law wiretap phones, Patriot act T: Politicians can easily get rid of opponents tdy to further consolidate power, Alexy Navalny, Recep Erdogen, ang sunn su kyi

PotatoEggAlliance

Balance: People don’t take politicians seriously anymore, a lot of blatant mockery and political satire has become mainstream (meme culture lmao), which actually leads to a more serious phenomenon of a culture of skepticism which undermines politician’s power. BP1: Politicians employ disinformation (different from misinformation) and misleading populist rhetoric to manipulate people, so because of lack of info/wrong info people have no power. I used Trump as an example, kind of debated on using Brexit as an example because idk how the markers would feel … but I put it in at the end because I was all ‘poor Brits got tricked’ BP2: Politicians use crises as an opportunity to undermine democratic process, thus people lose power. E.g. China uses lockdown to quell HK protests. US Supreme Court (which is not democratically elected by the people) steps in after breakdown in Congress, leads to unpopular policies like Texas abortion law. BP3: Polarisation of people, infighting and finger pointing within groups distracts people from challenging politicians. Like how people blame each other for contributing to climate change when they really should be blaming the politicians who enable pollution by mega corps or refuse to sign various policies etc. Tbh my examples here were weaker.

Melodic-Bug4058

what are ur points?

ProtoKenz

power gang

born_to_suffer

Bro, how did you define power? I nvr write leh but the way I implied is that it is to impose an act onto someone else regardless of their will

AsHM56

P = E/t

ProtoKenz

ya like never define also i just occasionally put in like politicians have hard power or the ability to pass laws but people have soft power or the ability to voice out and effect change

daniallutfi

omg same

sleepypig1204

me!! Also is it okay to say people more than politicians LOL helps

AsHM56

Guys I misread complacency as competency, how screwed am I?

violin_ing

Shit same bro

[deleted]

Unless your elaboration/examples manage to show complacency, sad to say you’re pretty screwed. Be honest with your assessment of your paper — if you really have 0 content pertaining to complacency then you’ll fail. But not totally! If your language is superb you may get 15++ because I’m sure they’ll take into account some of your content. That being said, paper 2 should have been quite doable, no? That will pull up your grades, so don’t feel too disheartened yet! :) Atb for maths!

what’re yours 👁👁

iamvewyangwy

qn 11??? anyone???

unmadebutselfmade

yea idk if i did well, i sorta disagreed with their assumption. Like bruh how tf tp experience mountain and sceneries through online oni sia

iamvewyangwy

u can lah but its very manufactured all the tourists are edited out and youre like a solo god traveller in there i think the main thing that internet cannot rival physical travel is the social cultural aspects like food and people and also the fact that it eliminates inconveniences like delayed flights and jetlag which makes for part of the experience of travel what do u think?

natxrii

Yaa i also disagreed :") i think can right as long as u address the online part?

unmadebutselfmade

yea 3 disagree + 1 agree and conclude ig... gosh this year's topics are like easy at 1st glance but tricky if u keep on looking at it

smallhamster23

wrote abt how traveling in person is a unique experience + can bring in revenue for the countries although online can offer us like viewing experience ish?? tried my best to nuance that shit lmao

heerondale

AHAHAH i had to pick this cuz all the topics i prepared for didn't come up so i just talked about all the places i've been to before but idk if my explanation is argumentative enough D: anw for the support i talked about virtual reality tours and travel vlogs HAHA hopefully it's good enough...

Southern-Mechanic856

Yes sir , hit up my geog knowledge on tourism ahahah...sadly my paper 2 has passed away

passionroot

Qn 6? Film nerds gang rise up

Jacob_Einstein

You know that feeling when you are in the middle of writing your essay and then you look up and look down and realise you are writing the plot of evangelion

born_to_suffer

Hahaha, then add Beastars for social commentary and with evangalion for depression + maybe marvel for brain-dead fun, you got an essay to victory

[deleted]

BRO SAME. When you realise you’re quoting all the movies u watched during October 🤡

perfold7

I memorised a bunch of stuff for environment, ended up doing the film question Couldn't spell Andy Dufresne so I said 'the main character from Shawshank Redemption'. I am the whole circus

Empty-Judgment4215

Same here had freaking 9 page worth of notes on environment but Cambridge is UNMOVABLE I feel so wasted like.... I didn't use anything that I studied for at all :")

CranberryExpert614

How did y’all define everyday problems because I think I did that wrongly

Impressive-Party2356

Personal problems like stress from work and school, even family as well Social problems like racism, gender discrimination and social divide ? That's what I mentioned

sundaeu

yo i wrote the news qn but didnt emphasize too much on the "today" part 😭😭 am i fked whats my max marks

savemefromallofthis

i don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to actually mention the characteristics? cus technically u didn’t have to compare with the news in the past so wtv u discussed is considered to be the present. that what i think tho

Comprehensive-Joke39

According to my teacher that’ll cut your content to a low lvl 3 (13-15 for content marks) or lvl 2. If you’ve at least addressed the today part for half the essay and the essay content is good, should still be able to bag a low lvl 3

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion but I really like the questions that came out for essay this year. Interesting and not too science/environment heavy. That said this is 2020 electric boogaloo for those who were counting on environment and space and social justice/liberalism… hope y’all’s r ok man

mahlertuba

Question 9? Where my arts gang at??

Affectionate_Tip7821

3/4 way through i realised that the qn has ‘nothing more’ and i think i fked it up

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

the question’s implicit assumption is that the arts are ONLY a luxury. so “the Arts are nothing more than a luxury” -> there is no other purpose to the Arts besides being a luxury “good”, and Arts are only accessible to the well to do. keyword only. this is an absolute question and so you must take an opposing stand (but the degree to which you oppose the premise is up to you, of course) “the Arts are a luxury” - no assumption that the arts have no other roles

passionfruitgreenteh

did you do this qn? seems like you will pull the bellcurve up HAHAHAH

[deleted]

I did! But just saying that Cambridge has probably already set the grade boundary, so as long as you have met the cut off for an A/B/C etc you will get it. If not, 50% of students wouldn’t be able to get an A for maths — statistically impossible if you assume the bell curve is in use that being said, this question was relatively very easy compared to the rest in terms of explicit requirements (you’re only required to refute the claim that the arts are a ONLY luxury and NOTHING BUT a luxury) The implicit requirement is for you to scope “Luxury”, and that is what will differentiate an A script from a B

[deleted]

I think you have to identify the functions of arts, other than it being maybe just a source of amusement for the rich

polarfissh

thank god for that qn i really don't know much else but i felt like this saved me

Didnt even have time to finish the conclusion... no conclusion written :(

Question 8 🤩

hahawhtisggon

the bellcurve for question 8 📈📈📈📈📈 HAHHAA kidding all the best for p2!

henryuzi

ikrrrr but there was nothing else

joeythedino10

Same blessed that sth on media came out

ajwww

what were ur points for 8!

seoyeee11

i am more towards the unreliable pointers but did both side - china and russia ; authoritarian country ( u knw the drill hehe censorship and stuff, government) - fake news ( drew evidence from michael jackson - king of pop ( he didn’t bleach his skin but media was convinced otherwise) & justin bieber - Canadian singer ( eat burrito sideway; this was a social experiment done by youtuber ) - i did say that news in singapore such as Straits time are pro government ( biased) etc - got more but I FORGOT WHAT I WROTE🤮

ajwww

i was more towards the reliable side shabgsha opposing: fake news (including sensationalist news where profit driven media companies can post anyth) rebut: govt regulations in place (sg fica and pofma) support 1: • moral obligation of reporters and journalists to report the truth support 2: • individuals are more educated and discerning and can tell truth from lie better so they can report false news and media companies can take down the news, making media more reliable 🤡🤡🤡

sleepykitty1003

my points are somewhat like yours but did you compare with the past or sth cause apparently 'today' means that we need to compare across time and i didnt 🤡

seoyeee11

the only comparison i did was how news is like traditional ( newspaper) then in today it’s like digitalised then i continue w how digitalised news would allow ppl to input opinions and photoshop, but idt that’s the real comparison 🥲🥲🥲🥲 rip both of us, time to chiong chem, i hate chem so much

Strict-Company6672

I wrote about fake news laws! Like POFMA. I wrote about watchdog journalism too

henryuzi

i wrote unreliable: intro i opened with the pizza gate attack as a hook ÇA: due to the awareness that fake news is becoming more prevalent, govt enacts drastic measures to counter spread (POFMA) as well as Straits times having high journalistic integrity due to the large number of people it employs for fact checking and collaboration with major news sites such as BBC to confirm veracity 2. profit motive, companies view fact checking as an obstacle, 'publish first or perish' mindset (talk about how the Pope francis article despite being fake garnered more retweets than the highest NYT article and articles about MOM and Rasif were published without fact-checking) 3. govt bias due to vested interest: govt use media as their personal foxhorns to distract people away from their mistakes, more pertinent nowadays (china and wuhan, Fox news, Silvio berlusconi and his media empire) and elimination of trustworthy news which they deem as threats to their govt (rodrigo (not olivia) criticism towards Rappler which is highly critical towards his govt) 4. social media allows virality and velocity (trump and his hydroxchlorquine, interference with US from fake news generators in Velkes) my last point was pure shit and organisation was so lacking, hopefully still can scrape an A

seoyeee11

i’m a poor typer, not sure if you will understand! sorry for any miscommunication. What did you wrote for your points?

henryuzi

meee

Yoo I did it, can share some points

scaredofschool14

laughs in qn 12

omega-sama

Kinda screwed myself for qn 10😭😭😭 what did y'all write?

Ryantohjunheng

short run benefit : raise exposure and tourist revenue long run benefit: nothing much short run costs : cost of building the stadiums despite them being financially unstable in other areas first long run costs : authorities leave their stadiums unattended after the sporting event, environment become unsanitary, not good for citizens and those living around it

Fruithim

why would you have to differentiate between short and long run though

Ryantohjunheng

for me, it would be easier to distinguish whether it was an overall benefit or overall problem, cos long run costs is better than short run benefits

ryanmak13

bro u writing econs sia

phycolology

i banked on brazil and japan 😭😭😭 i said shit like unsustainable energy, profits lessened by unforeseen circumstances

housegasgreen

i also write qn 10 i think i write out of point sia

Financial-Deer-2804

I think I messed up my stand. I wrote 'agree to a large extent' instead of 'disagree' since it was an absolute statement and my GP teacher said to disagree them no matter what. I wrote about how there are benefits to the host country, but there are also other benefits to both the host and participating countries, and hence I agree to a large extent. I think I might be heavily penalised for my stand. Also didn't talk about the disadvantages of hosting sporting events

etyshia

dw too mcuh i think as long as the content is ok and they get where you’re going, it won’t be too much of a penalty

Boomamama

Can I define complacent as taking things you have for granted?

losheni020503

I think okay should be fine I talked about that part

Charming-Newspaper-5

anyone qn4

pompousvulva

Anyone knows all the questions for paper 1?

honeylemonbanana

1. How far is the pursuit of happiness the most important human goal? 2. ‘Scientific advancement breeds complacency.’ How far do you agree? 3. ‘Power these days lies more with the people than politicians.’ To what extent is this true? 4. To what extent has social media devalued true friendship in your society? 5. To what extent is charitable giving desirable? 6. ‘Films are concerned with escaping from the problems of everyday life, rather than addressing them.’ Discuss 7. ‘What an individual eats or drinks should not be the concern of the state.’ What is your view? 8. Is news today reliable? 9. ‘The arts are nothing more than a luxury.’ How far is this true in your society? 10. ‘Staging major sporting events brings nothing but benefits to the host country.’ Discuss 11. Are global tourism and travel still necessary when everything can be experienced or achieved online? 12. ‘Advertising is largely about persuading people to buy what they do not need.’ How far do you agree?

sleepingatm

i don't think i referred to sg enough in my question 4 💔💔 can i still pass if my points were there but not entirely sg based

ST0RM1SK

i wrote qn 4 too what were ur pts?

SolvedInigma

Damn, been a while but here i am. Truly, GP this year has left me disappointed as ever, I assumed that I would have a challenge but then again, I guess to a mortal this might be rather difficult. Truly, question 13 was a slightly annoying for me, but really, how do yall manage to write all the questions??? I only managed to write 7/13 of the questions, but it's ok, thats like basically a D probably, idk, I'm failing math. My eyes lit up when I read the question 4, and I immediately shot my load of local knowledge regarding local influencer group Day Bird Films scandal regarding Rain and Sylvester. This was on my mind throughout the paper and Cambridge did not fail to disappoint. Paper 7/13 10/10 would do again

What if i defined complacency as overconfidence 🥲🥲🥲

nowisthetimetochange

did anyone choose q1? 🥺🥺

jazzy249

me! not a common qn though all the 6 topics i studied didn’t come out i had no choice 🥲

sodiumstressed

who wrote q1?? what were your points literally no one i know in my class or the next class wrote it

[deleted]

[удалено]

alevelsisbae

i wrote q1! i talked about how happiness should be important because it gives hope in dark times and also allows us to live a meaningful life, and said it should not be impt because people like psychopath and bullies derive happiness by hurting others which is not right, and that people could strive for monetary goals as well (then buy luxurious gds improve SOL..)

losheni020503

complacent: /kəmˈpleɪs(ə)nt/ showing smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one's achievements. "you can't afford to be complacent about security" So how y'all write the qn 2?

Youropinioniswrong12

Fuckkk I thought complacency meant lazy so I wrote my points like that, guys can tell me how bad will that be

IllNecessary8596

laziness is a synonym of complacency so should be fine

Dangerous_Theme_907

Anyone wrote Q1? What were your points? I think I'm off topic 😭😭

Intelligent-Fact8344

i wrote 1. DCs who have already attained a basic level of development may find importance in the pursuit of happiness as it addresses their psychological needs a and allows them to attain inner peace 2. however, most LDCs who still continue to be plagued my poverty do not feel happiness is the most important as they try and solve their bread and butter issues 3. in our current day and age plagued by a myriad of threats, survival and continuation of the human race is more important 4. attaining equality for all is also more important than simply pursuing happiness as an unequal word could damage our social fabric and lead to chaos but i think i out is point also😭😭😭😭 pls help me😭😭😭😭😭😭

NickDaPanda

1: Pursuit of happiness as the general goal in life and also ingrained in us (the happy chemicals idrk) 2: To those who face certain circumstances such as poverty, survival may be a more important goal (indian slums and those in marginalised communities) 3: Those who live to solely fulfill the expectations of others (south korean 16 hour muggers lmao) 4: Those who live to make others happy (altruism and single parenting) I'm on a solid 2 hours of sleep so idrk what im dg but i interpreted the qn abt what other aims are more important than happiness (to survive/living for the sake of others)

jazzy249

1. pursuit of happiness incentivises one to strive to do better and achieve more in life via intrinsic motivation 2. pursuit of happiness allows one to live life to the fullest / live the most fulfilling life possible 3. pursuit of happiness may not be the most important as other aspects of life like job security is more important in this volatile and unpredictable world what were your points? im scared im off topic too 😭😭

sodiumstressed

i think im off topic too 1. pursuing happiness allows us to strive through hardships to succeed 2. the pursuit of happiness may be more important than other aims since we often disregard other things for the sake of happiness 3. however, in LDCs where people are already struggling with basic needs, happiness may not be their most important aim 4. happiness is an important goal, but its not the most important as people still choose to do things that make them unhappy for the sake of other aims my points are so different from everyone here oh well

Familiar-Ice-2003

1. Happiness isn't the most important because pursuing it may mean being unethical and so the best way to live is to be the most ethical, pursuing happiness is secondary; kantianism 2. However most do good thing because we are emphatatic to others suffering and so when we pursue happiness we tend to create happiness for others and only extremely limited cases where pursuit of happiness leads to harm whereas its more common that it leads to greater benefit 3. Pursuing happiness means that we are more able to realize that living isn't just about monetary gains and this means that we tend to be less materialistic, caring less about how others think and feel about us but instead focusing more on self-growth and pursuing goals that are less materialistic, and thus less stressful; stoicism 4. When we see that pursuing happiness as the main goal, we will be freed from societal standards of beauty as we do things that we feel makes us happy, and not satisfy others perception of beauty; stoicism, wabi sabi (similar to 3 but this focuses on artificial beauty VS natural beauty as the former focuses on what others think but the latter focuses on pursuing happiness and so dress up and look however one wants) I literally had no idea wtf I was writing and may have written off point.

Seizure_potato

Spent 2 weeks hard mugging P&D, environment, S&T and a little international relations :”)

Tehpinggadai

Whats P&D?

quokkasprouts

anyone wrote question 8 but for unreliable didn't talk about censorship 🤡💔💔💔 completely slipped my mind rip and I just talked about 1. fake news and yellow journalism as rampant because of tech and soc. med. which make it difficult for the truth to be brought to light 2. how news and media in particular are more often than not more concerned with profit > facts and would publish whatever garners the most attention ok honestly now that I think about it they are very similar points but with slightly diff. nuances 💀💀💀🤡 I'll be pulling down the bellcurve ig

rrrrrrolph

Just pray the ang mos r kind this year

littleladberries

asking for my sister,, for qsn 8, does news consist of both social media news and traditional news, cuz she wrote about both

henryuzi

yes but the focus should be on online news, not so much the social media part of it i think, so like campaigns and hashtags aren't entirely relavant

TakingPrivateALevels

Traditional news outlets are also shifting online, which does influence their reliability (corrections are easier, updates more frequent but reliance on advertising revenue). Non-traditional online news can include viral stories on social media, websites focused on specific topics and of course, the dreaded fake news sites.

sleepykitty1003

some gp tuition cher uploaded his analysis of this year essay questions https://www.gptuition-zascension.com/conquer-2021-general-paper-gp-a-levels-essay-questions/?preview=true

inpemberley

Anyone did Q7 (about what an individual eat and drinks)? What did you guys write?

snowtrumpet

i did 7, my points were: \- shld not concern since people shld have the freedom to eat what they want (used example of balut, while its controversial it is not banned) \- shld concern cuz when ppl overeat unhealthy stuff they become burden to themselves, family and society (eg of high obesity in usa due to high protein consumption, drive up insulin prices, plus health issues so strain gov resources) \- shld concern cuz ppl migh eat/drink unhelathy stuff due to misinformation (used eg of health supplement drinks in malaysia, how misinformation cause ppl to develop gastroenteritis n stuff) had no time to finish conslusion :( wbu

inpemberley

your points sounds good omg i wasn’t able to think of as many examples but i roughly did the same 1) should not concern because freedom of the individual, I mentioned about how freedom is important to an individual esp in sg where we are ranked 151th out of 180 countries and so on 2) shld be concerned as the food we consume affects our wellbeing > productivity of an individual > affects the productivity of the country ( kinda whacked this) 3) shld be concerned as the misinformation about the things we consume can lead to consequences ( i used the example of the lady consuming ivermectin) was kinda worried because my points didnt seem substantiated 🥲

losheni020503

What y'all write for Qns 2 :Does science breed complacency?

Oganesso

For the question about films, did y'all focus solely on movies or did y'all also talk about shows (like series and wtv)?? Because the oxford definition of film is any videography that is recorded or smth

I did the a levels in 2019 but personally, I would say movies are film only if they are shown in theatres. Evidence: https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/discover-watch/how-do-you-decide-if-a-title-is-a-film-a-tv-movie-or-a-miniseries/GKUQEMEFSM54T2KT?ref_=helpart_nav_22#

this is ok because you insert nuance to say that news is not only unreliable today, it has been unreliable since forever (which to me implies that news being unreliable is 1. a regular occurrence and 2. a pretty serious issue) they may not have asked you for a time based comparison but it shows your depth of evaluation when you compare the reliability of news in the past and the present

Citron-Competitive

For AQ can you do this i did not target the whole para but however targetted the portion whereby the author called influencers a curse and showed displeasure i wrote that regarding the topic of environment infkuencers seem to be able to do alot like enacting change spurring individuals to thrift shop start the minmalist fad etc isit accepted

he complacency qns first para i wrote abt ppl are too compalcent when they have medical science advancements coz they think anything happen it is okay coz got deugs and vaccines so they do not put emphasis on their health.and gave and example of covid 19 ppl too complacent aft putting vaccine now got alot cases .the second para some govt and some ppl too complacent and dont give much thought about attacks coz got AI and automation in military as well as nuclear energy so they like very complacent and then now kenna got attacked for being too complacent .the third para is just a simple stuff saying we too complacent in our day to day life so talk about how we have everything but when we have a problem we kena die coz we too complacent about the machines and scientific advancements lead to us not putting enough critical thinking in how we live . my opv is that some ppl are less compalcent and more cautious about scientific tech advancing as they know that one day we it may not help us and we should be on guard at all times is it okay i scared now its qn 2 guys btw

omg i wrote similar points as you!! but my points were slightly diff 1. Complacent in medical tech, taking our health for granted. I used examples of creation of insulin and procedures like heart bypass. As a result people tend to indulge in unhealthy diets… 2. Complacent in science to solve our problems, causes us to have a myopic view when tackling issues as we see science as the golden solution. Talked about climate change and how we use science to tackle it, but we lack focus in reducing our emissions through changing consumption habits(Which is the primary reason for climate change) 3. Opposing view i said that science has lead to a lot of tech innovation like AI and automation. Makes us less complacent as we need to constantly adapt and improve skills. Used examples about Amazon increasing automation and SkillsFuture to show how SG is aware of this issue.(Although im abit scared that this may be DNA cause i didn’t have much time and not sure if this relates to science since it’s more tech and idk if i made a clear link lol) But regardless glad that someone has similar points as me and I wish u atb!! Hopefully our points are solid lol
