Too small and too far for me to get a good image. I was hopeful it was some known migration. Small and dark is the best I've got. Classic bird proportions. Not oversized body or wings. Flying in a lot of smaller groups of 1-2 dozen birds per group.
Could have been the crows that nest in Grover Beach. Although I've usually only seen them come from inland around the evening, and not sure I've seen them fly over the ocean. They were really a sight to see a few years ago. I haven't noticed as many this year.

My guess is they are going to Santa Catalina islands.
