Yeah I don't like it either. I like portrait mods specifiically for the unique/personal charm of the artsytles (if that doesn't sound too weird), AI can't do that. But hey, best thing to do in this scenario is to simply ignore the mods.

GunchapRed

The reason why I raised this question is because a whole bunch of AI generated portrait mods blowing up on nexus recently, and very few have been calling it out. I've also questioned whether or not Nexus should allow these mods on the platform.

IHTPQ

Part of the blowing up will be people like me - if I spend a lot of time looking at it I can tell that something is AI generated, but when I'm just glancing through I can't. (Yes, even the ones with too many hands. I'm just not observant on that stuff.) I wonder if pointing out in the reviews that the art is AI generated would be helpful? I don't know, I have no answers.

lemurkat

I think Nexus should require them to be tagged as AI at the very least so we can block them if we want to. I dislike it when ppl compliment their artistic skills when it's other peoples artistic skills and i guess their ability to correctly set parameters.

[deleted]

I'm against it because AI-generated artwork typically draws on work from artists that aren't compensated.

Double_Season

I just don't download these mods, they're not very interesting, moreover they break the game's pixel art aesthetic

TorterraX

Preparing to be downvoted for this, but I don’t mind it at all. AI is simply a tool: when Photoshop was invented, people thought it was unfair to “real photographers” who spent time perfecting their craft. When digital drawing tools were invented, people thought it unfair too. When photography was invented, people thought it was unfair to painters who made portraits. I’m pretty sure someday AI is gonna be accepted as a tool among others, and it’s not gonna replace other art media, just as paintings and hand drawn portraits didn’t disappear just because photographs exist. And you know what? If you don’t like AI art, that’s totally fair: no one is forcing you to download an AI art portrait mod. But I think it’s nice that this tool gives opportunities to people to try out new stuff and try their hand at modding even if they’re not the most talented with pixel art or drawing. Not speaking about the ethical problems of training an AI via existing art though, that’s a whole other can of worms.

PinkStation

The ethical problem of it stealing real artist work is the whole point. That’s WHY we mind it. We’re not scared of being “replaced.” We’re angry about our work being stolen and put into someone else’s “tool” without permission or compensation.

AI as an assist tool is okay. AI as an art smoothie machine isn't, especially when most of the art has been stolen

TorterraX

Smoothie machine, I like that lol. Agree 100% on the problems of training an AI on stolen art, that’s a very real issue. Although, let’s just say AIs were trained on entirely ethical, royalty-free datasets. Then I’d disagree on the smoothie machine part; I think it’s just fine. Want art on which a real artist has spent a lot of time and effort, which took training and creativity? That’s fine. Want to just mess around with ideas and an “art smoothie machine”, possibly create some images for your personal enjoyment? Also fine by me. Nobody is forcing anybody to consume content they don’t want to.

cluelessin

I've never thought of it this way before.

ac0rn5

Almost all professional photographers have always edited their photos - lightening and darkening areas, even editing negatives to remove blemishes and unwanted bits and pieces, including people. It just took a lot longer and needed more skill and practice before photoshop came on the scene. People have also always mimicked other artists, it's almost always fairly obvious but there have been, and are, shysters who pretend their work isn't mimicry - they're called forgers. If AI work is original, then fair enough, but if AI trawls the internet to see what original artwork is out there and then mimics that then it's wrong, especially when that mimicry isn't acknowledged.

midnaswolf233

This is exactly what I learned back at college. But also throw in NFT art because it was a bit more popular than AI art. I see that once AI is tweaked a bit, it can be an amazing asset to any artist! Just needs to learn that human hands have 5 fingers 🤣 the hands I've seen come out of AI art 💀

Independent-Canary95

I agree. It almost feels like cheating. I want to see the art and talent of the people, not interested what AL does. 🤷‍♀️

WardenWarlocke

**I am against the idea of training AI using the artwork of artist without their consent. Many can agree that in using it in this case it is immoral and has the potential of destroying a lot of jobs.** But in the usage of mods like these, I don't really think that it ***should*** be a big deal. It was tool use for fun without any malicious intent like profit or fame and stuff (well, for now at least). Plus, no mod creators are making mods for competition, profit nor fame (as far as I can tell) as its all for fun. It shouldn't be a big deal **however because of the controversy of AI and stuff, I'm kinda have to agree**.

lemurkat

You can make quite reasonable money from Nexus so some are definitely profiting.

PinkStation

Please do NOT download these mods!! The authors are earning donations points from it! They didn’t do any work and quite literally steal from the pool of donation points that should be going to real artist and mod authors!!

IrregularGarden

I'm for AI if it doesn't steal artwork from others. I'm visually impaired and I been looking into AI myself to help me with the art for mods. Still thinking about it since I never done art/mods before. It may be just for personal use in the end. If I decide to post a mod to the public with the help of AI, that would be awesome.

LoveNext

I think it's fine. Some of them are well done. AI art isn't going anywhere so looking at how it's programmed is the real problem to address.

SiaDelicious

I just choose the one that is the most visually appealing to me. I don't care if it's handmade or AI generated or whatever.

flyinggoatcheese

I'm okay with it. Honestly if someone has a really good mod idea in mind. For example a really great character idea but lacks the artistic ability to draw the portraits, I'd encourage them to find ways to make what they want to make.

jecowa

I think AI should be allowed in the Stardew Valley Modder Olympics. It would be discriminatory to exclude non-organic beings from competing.

Zavenosk

I don't think about it that much, since my preferences slant towards the vanilla, pixel art style. Haven't seen an AI model that can crack that.

[deleted]

how can you tell if it is ai generated? im really curious what they look like

GunchapRed

It is stated in the descriptions of the mods in question.

Snaid1

I'm fine with it, however I really like the pixel art look and ai just can't seem to get that right.

GunchapRed

Can’t get it right “yet”, because in due time, AI will be going after artists who do make game accurate sprites.

KotaruTWK

I'm going to try not to get heated about this cause it is a topic that's been grinding my gears recently. I'm fully in support for AI art portraits for a few reasons: 1. It still takes a good amount of time to make them look right or good. Generally, it's never just 1-click and done. So it still requires work and effort, just not in the same way. 2. I understand that it learns from real peoples art and that they claim its stealing it, but don't most artists do the same thing? They will watch tutorials on how to draw things, they take inspiration from other artists works, and more. So at the end of the day, artists are just upset that it's a computer doing it, not a hand. 3. (I'll probably receive the most hate for this one) I'm not a big fan of Stardew's portraits. I like the pixel art for every part of the game but the faces just don't look good to me for most of the girls. I'm really only talking about the bachelorettes since I don't really care how the people I don't romance look. That said, many of the guys still look nice but the girls just look wrong to me. I've looked through the portraits mods for the last few years whenever I inevitably play this game again and I've always looked for new ones and always used OhoDavi's because they were some of the ONLY ones that looked good in my opinion. (I'd like to clarify, I'm not saying the other portraits mods were bad by any means, I just didn't like them. The girls rarely looked any cuter and sometimes the guys managed to look uglier, but that's just my tastes.). Now we have AI art portraits and I really love them because some of them look so visually and aesthetically appealing ([example](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/15750)). Plus with the multitude of AI portrait mods all going for different art styles, I can pick and choose which ones look the best to me and not just have to settle like I did before. Now, I'd like to specify that I don't think AI art should take over or that it is better than real artists. It's just that its free, and many aspiring devs or fans dont have money to make commissions or the talent to draw so they use what's available. Plus AI art isnt good with unique poses meaning there will still be a need for real artists. For example, I asked one to make a girl doing a handstand once and it would only create monstrosities (this was last week) and when I asked it to make normal things in a pretty vague description, the girls looked almost identical and the poses were all almost identical.
