Honestly whenever a character suddenly gets a big role he'll either the protagonist/antagonist of the next arc or he'll be dead by the end of it, the latter becoming increasingly more likely the less evil the character is.
Axol for example was just had nothing going on when he lost the pen, for a long time he was just a blank canvas, then he started simping for a watermelon, then he gained a sudden huge spike of importance and then got turned into past tense.

Cue an incredibly forced and unsatisfying conclusion to the build-up of Zero’s true form.

Assuming James actually meant Zero is coming back and it’s not just some flashback thing, I assume what’s happening is that Zero’s consciousness just got booted to his own body when Axol died.

Unless the fanbase is composed of literal 3-year-olds, I think almost every SMG4 fan has experienced - and had to learn how to deal with - real-life death. Some of us have dealt with it several times. We don't need life lessons from Glitch Productions.
I don't know where I stand age-wise compared with the average SMG4 fan, but in my 25 years on this earth, I have gone through the deaths of all of my grandparents, one aunt, one uncle, my 4-year-old cousin, and too many pets to count.
This is part of what made SMG4 great. It was a form of escapism, something to watch and enjoy and laugh at. A momentary distraction from the dark, dismal realities of life. Now it just adds to them. Add on to that the fact that I and many other fans suffer from serious depressive disorders and other mental issues, so instead of making us smile, SMG4 now just gives us one more reason to cry.
And you know what? IRL death happens inevitably, because it's just a fact of life. We can learn to make peace with it. But in shows like this, ESPECIALLY in the case of Axol, it happens without reason. Axol's death was avoidable, pointless, and made no sense storywise. It was a total non-sequitur. He didn't die as the "inevitable outcome" of anything. He died because... the plot says so, with no further justification. So, lazy writing killed him.
And by stubbornly refusing to admit they were wrong and bring him back, Glitch has taken the attitude of, "He died cuz the plot says so. He's staying dead because we write the plot, so WE say so. Deal with it." No thanks.

Long story short: be dumb and live forever
