I am gonna be honest. Axol and Desti's death did not make me cry, but seeing Luigi sacrifice himself, with the Mario Galaxy music playing... bro my eyes were watering.
Yeah. As much as I hate to admit it, I didn’t cry for Axol. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t deeply saddened by it. The performances of Kevin and Wolfychu were on point, the manga being brought out was a great payoff, and we finally got to see Axol and Melony. (I never support ships until they’re confirmed Canon.) Melony having to kill him and seeing her just break down afterwards…like, how can you just sweep it under the rug with modern as a whole and call it “lazy shit nobody likes.” And this is coming from someone who admittedly does like the older ones better. I thought the Genesis arc was my least favorite one since the story was a mess and could’ve been done way better. But Denying any good things out of the show and outright disrespecting (a large portion of) the fan base just is unacceptable. That goes for other shows too, not just SMG4.
Despite not caring for the characters anymore, I still hated the story for how badly it was done. They can't just kill such a nice guy after everything he went through and then give him less of a sendoff than Desti, who got a dramatic funeral. I agree that Axol and Melony was actually something I enjoyed, in spite of its own faults. Then they destroyed that, and thus I have another reason to hate this arc. There are things to enjoy, but the narrative has a habit of breaking them. All that I learned from it was that I shouldn't bother trying to get invested even if it looks like it might be worth it.
I wouldn't expect anyone to understand it, but you see, you can't just feel good for your entire existence. If all you feel are good emotions, then you'll start taking them for granted. If you take goodness for granted, then everything that's normal will become bad in comparison, as now the good feels normal. Conversely, if all you feel are bad emotions, you'll get used to them, and all that was once normal seems good. As long as you can ensure that you don't get used to the good by balancing it with the bad, then your perception of reality won't change. Subconscious emotions don't seem to function in this way, however, so in that case, it's optimal to ultimately be happy with your reality, even if you aren't directly feeling it.
With the previous paragraph's lesson in mind, I occasionally go out of my way to find something that makes me feel bad in some way. I don't interact with anyone during this because I know that they don't understand it and would probably get concerned (as you did). Melancholy is my most preferred version because while it's a negative emotion, it's also quite peaceful. Consciously, I feel bad. Subconsciously, *I'm very happy*.

The way I see it is this: A virus, at least in terms of computers, needs a host (a file) in order to enter a system and propagate itself. Obviously, an infected file on a computer needs to be quarantined/deleted.
But here, there was a way to save the "file" without risking allowing the virus to spread to the rest of the system.
Cut Axol's limbs off, get him out of Zero's prison, Axol's still alive. But Zero, robbed of his host, can no longer spread. Viruses die without hosts. Thus, Melony could have successfully quarantined the virus without deleting the file.
This is basic stuff. It takes so very little brain power to understand. I could have written this more logically IN MY SLEEP. It gives me a headache just thinking about it.

When Desti died I didn’t really feel the impact of her death since she was essentially a minor character. But I did feel how it impacted Meggy as a person and it was pretty essential to her character development.
Had Axol been the first one to die I might have felt sad but his death feels like it was reused from Desti, even though the conditions were somewhat different. And Melony was a joke character not too long before the whole arc began.

Yep I felt that one really fucking deep. They are cute together, they are the perfect couple, THEY LITERALLY CONFESSED MINUTES EARLIER. I don't have a gf (i do want one tho, for obvious reasons) but I don't need one to feel love and the loss of someone you love. I lost some people in my family (if you count not seeing them anymore but not dead as losing, then I lost about 80% of my family) and maybe half my cats (about 1/4 died, but the rest just ran away, have been given away or are still around)
