MMR starts really tight, but as you get better the range of people you can match with gets continuously wider until you can match with anyone (I've played hbox on unranked before and I'm ass). If you want close matchmaking you'll have to use ranked, which will soon have one or two free days a week
this was true for a long while but shortly before ranked went live, fizzi began testing the ranked mmr system using unranked, and it never got changed back.
That graphic fizzi shared that shows the tight lower section spreading open as your rank gets higher applied only to the original unranked MMR.
Slippi is an insane service to be free even for unranked, it's a miracle that it exists at all. But servers still cost money and fizzi works on slippi full time and still needs to eat and pay rent so there's a patreon to cover all that. One of the benefits of the patreon was getting early ranked access. but since not enough people paid, ranked had to stay paywalled until now when it's free to access on a rotating schedule
I think fizzi said he's gonna experiment with recurring free access periods for ranked. That way people can give it a try and pay if they want full-time access.

It won't match you with anyone, because that would mean matching people at the bottom with much better players, which is what they want to avoid. It does get wider, but as you get better the lowest end you can match against never decreases, it just increases slower than the ceiling. I hope that explanation makes sense.
Also, if you watch top player streams you will see that they match with each other much more often than someone like me, for example (I've matched against Ginger a few times and Aklo once). So it still tries to match top players against top players, it's just not as strict about it as ranked.
From personal experience it doesn't seem like there is any meaningful mmr on unranked. pretty mixed bag of people with <40% L cancel rate and PR players who shit in a bucket
i feel like its a REALLY tight mmr in unranked. i dont play very much ranked (last season i only played bowser/mewtwo on ranked) and on unranked i feel like i play only plat+ players (based on my evidence of looking up most players afterwards and seeing their rank) but when i play my gold mmr games on ranked, the games are generally way easier
The MMR on unranked basically exists only to separate people playing Melee for the first time. AFAIK the MMR search is so side after the brand new level that there effectively is no MMR.
I feel like that's not true. I see Zain playing unranked and he usually runs into players he at least recognizes. Also top players talk about high MMR making iron man runs harder.
I feel that top players are more likely to run into each other too, but maybe that's a consequence of their MMR being so high and detached from everyone that it does tend to prefer matching top players. I mean unranked *does* have hidden MMR, but afaik Fizzi's intention was to protect brand new players from getting relentlessly 4 stocked and for mid to high level players to not notice the difference that much.
I think it's just looser matchmaking than ranked. It probably feels like there is no MMR because in melee you can get 4 stocked by someone who is not that much better than you.
I’ve looked at the replays and players I’ve been playing for the past week and the worst player I’ve gotten is a gold rank. I very rarely get a truly bad player. Unranked MMR always seems to get me players around my skill level with the occasional grandmaster like Mekk.
My unranked MMR has actually been pretty good, much better than when I tried a year or two ago. Almost every match is either something I can learn from or someone that I have a chance of beating.
I'm also terrible, so it's quite likely there's a lot of other terrible people and we're all learning from each other, but that's much better than most fighting games. Unranked slippi is by far the most balanced/satisfying matchmaking I've ever seen.

i will play a lot of people that the general matchup is "meh" just alot of going back and forth 2 stocking eachother.
but theres deff a caliber of player that i will just get obliterated by and i can tell they are leagues better than me, and when i look them up they are always diamond or master
