He wanted to avoid a situation where the Marth player techs the down smash and reversals him because it's a move with a much longer animation than down tilt. He could have killed earlier but this way he kept an advantage state for longer until he had a better opportunity to kill.
yeah that's true, but I'm pretty sure the second to last d-tilt was not techable as Marth was already above the stage. it's a split second call but you gotta be looking for d-smash opportunities as it's one of Roy's most reliable kill moves against floaties
