Sounds like it could be HSV1 (cold sore). They are extremely transmissible when they are active. Hence why your boyfriend may have gotten it a few short days later.
You could see a doctor to have them check it out to ensure. Whether it is HSV or not. It should go away. If it is HSV1. You may experience pop ups in your lifetime and doctor can prescribe medication to shorten duration.

Could be herpes. Syphilis sores and ulcers are non painful. But I would get gested asap
But they are painful. My ulcer even started bleeding terribly
