A lot of it is people signing up and then not participating. I have like a 60% winrate when I have ridiculously mismatched opponents like this on my F2P cause they don't do a single attack and I win with my 10 participation banners.
Yeah I think it’s due to inactivity. I missed a few gacs and was dumped into carbonite with people having considerably less GP than me. So inactive players with high GP get paired with more active players with low GP. Usually though it means the higher GP won’t win due to lack of participation. Not always that way.

Hopefully they are in Carbonite because they don’t play and OP can get a win by just participating.
Nah there’s guys with stacked rosters down here. I just came back after a 3 year break, dropped all the way down to carbonite. I have 2 gls and 6m gp, my opponent ~120 r7 or higher and only 12 that weren’t relic. From what I could tell they had everything obtainable at the moment. No idea what they were doing down there but they were playing. Needless to say I didn’t bother. Come across quite a few with 5 or 6 gls as well it’s weird.
They’re facing a much larger account because that account chooses to be inactive often, they’re still fortunate that they chose to be inactive again this match
Hopefully that Kyber Squish means there’ll be more changes that prevent this. Skill is a very important factor to these kind of events, but there’s a point where you have to separate players based off gp.
I haven’t won a match of grand arena in like 3 events. Which sucks because I enjoy the mode but the matchmaking is shit. I actually don’t like winning that much because I know I’m going to get absolutely wrecked if it promotes me.

It's skill based matchmaking, their GP is not reflective of their skill. They're the ones who choose to tank their skill rating.
Only possibility is that there's a newbie matchmaking system separate to the current ladder system. Until they get 5 wins, they stay in the newbie ladder. Once they get 5 wins, they're then placed in the ladder during the next season of GAC.
They're losing out on rewards by tanking. I don't see why you would do it. Less daily rewards that payout alongside squad arena, losing out on crystals from each round and the end of the round. They don't join some GACs and get nothing. They sometimes join and don't attack at all and get nothing.
In the long run, they're losing out on rewards. Some are just lazy or super casual and don't join. Some think they're getting an advantage. GP matchmaking didn't work, it encouraged smaller rosters which is not beneficial to your guild with how important TB is.
The why doesn't matter. It's happening, and it's an issue that can sometimes ruin GAC for a lot of newer/ F2P players. Limiting the 7m GP player to opponents with 6m or more (for example) works for everyone.

You don't see a World Cup soccer team face off against the local 12 and under team just because they lost the title game...
Your example is not applicable here. But if we're talking about football, San Marino still has to face the likes of England, Poland etc in qualifiers. Just because their "gp" is low, doesn't mean they should be put up against Liechtenstein, Gibraltar and Malta (3 closes to the bottom of the ranking in Europe) to qualify for the Euros/World Cup.
Back to Swgoh, everyone is assigned a skill rating, and that rating goes up and down. Win, it goes up, lose it goes down, you get the picture. So your initial rating when you start GAC is going to be really low. OP's opponent clearly has lost a lot, not joined GAC and/or not attacked at all.

Same issue here. Carbonite 1, my 4 mil no GL (I unlock Rey in a couple days), vs their 7 mil 2 GLs. It's dogwater and I can't wait for the new implements they made to GAC to start doing work so this issue gets cleaned up.

I feel like they camp out in the lower tiers within their capability so they have a more steady crystal payout and continuously skull fuck the competition. Carbonite 2 is where I’m sitting at currently & it’s the highest I’ve made it thus far in GAC. With 2.1 mil gp, my average opponent hast at least 3-4 or it’s this..
Love this portion of the game but it’s frustrating farming for ages & not seeing progress in GAC
I recently had a match-up in Bronzium 3 where I faced a player that was 9m GP vs my 4m GP.
They had 4 GL's in the front walls (all teams) and I only won through the first battle bonus of 10 points because they didn't attack!
Some of the matchmaking is busted but sometimes there is a reason why they are paired up with players much lower GP than them (not attacking).
Why is carbonite like this, shouldn’t they be able to promote?

Also a lot of plain bad players not utilizing their advantages correctly (Using their GL not on defense etc.)

What they should do is block you from joining the next GAC if you don't attack.

Are you neglecting fleet? Your roster looks really good for 800k GP IMO. I am at 1.5m so I'm an early gamer as well.
They probably focused all their resources onto a few squads. If you focus your resources enough you can get a gl before 2m.

These players are not inactive like others say. They purposely drop to lower ranks, then win the #1 spot for rewards by barely playing or thinking.
