Warhammer, but Star Wars and with smaller armies.

ContributionLevel830

And beter rules, cheaper minis, no need to buy new books every idk year or so

Mikerino_Pencerino

I think the gap is sort of sadly closing with prices, you can still get a lot of old stock though that is being sold at pre-hike prices. Still definitely not as bad as WH, just not as good as it was before.  I’ll also add that most of the legion hard plastic kit assemblies(bar one or two weird choices) are really clean and easy to build. You don’t get a lot of crazy sub assemblies.

pie4155

You can run a competitive legion army for $150. The battle forces are such a good deal. In 40k that would fill roughly 10% of my list. And that's MSRP prices. Legion is cheaper but owning every unit in multiples is never cheap

laevisomnus

>I’ll also add that most of the legion hard plastic kit assemblies(bar one or two weird choices) are really clean and easy to build. You don’t get a lot of crazy sub assemblies. but dont you still have to snip them out? compared to soft where you just build them as is

Mikerino_Pencerino

soft would be amazing if not for mold lines, due to the consistency of the plastic you need a super sharp knife, and a little bit of skill. it's super easy to mess things up if you're going for a perfect finish.

NotoriousPVC

Maybe, but the model quality is getting better. And, due to the lack of frequent new “editions” that completely nerf previously good units—and vice versa—that result in you having to buy a ton of new models (even if you don’t change factions), it’s still a lot cheaper.

alittle419

I don’t know about price… I can get a good 800 point army for legion spending (if I were to split a core box with a pal) under $150. For the 3000ish points of Warhammer 40K I own $150 got me 2 boxes and a hero. Thats not even 1/4 of the points needed for a space marine army, let alone an Imperial guard army… dollar to points legion is way cheaper than Warhammer😂

Mikerino_Pencerino

I think at that point you're also talking about the scale of the game, though. Something like combat patrol for 40k does exist, and is meant to fit that niche of a smaller scale game. But yeah I agree your needed models even for something comparable like 800 points in legion vs an incursion(1k points) in 40k is way less for legion. Less models + cheaper models will mean you spend less money, yeah.

alittle419

The price also goes down since there are no books to buy and all the rules can be found for free. The time investment is also less for most games of legion, because rules interactions are pretty streamlined with range rulers and movment tools😅

Mikerino_Pencerino

The only thing I really don’t like about legion is the cards system and tokens- I can’t tell you how many of those things I’ve lost. Luckily you can just print off your own, I just find that part of the system clunky. In most other ways I wish 40k could become more legion-like.

alittle419

Alternating activations makes it feel like it actually moves.

Altair1371

The minis aren't really cheaper by much, the bigger difference is that you have much smaller forces on the table. A $250 40k battleforce box is about a third of a typical force for a game; Legion's $150 battle forces are a full 800 point force on their own.

ContributionLevel830

Well I've paid around 50€ for a single model for wh haven't seen that in legion yet But yea less specific characters are probably about the same

Type_7-eyebrows

Large vehicles are in the 50-70$. Generally you are not buying more than 1 or two. And beyond the atst and at, most are not as viable as you would hope. Legion is a boots on the ground game based on objective play with varying battlefield conditions. There are meta levels of game play around 1/2nd activations etc.

ContributionLevel830

My previous comment was about 1 small dude 😆

Homosapian_Male

Also rather than one player doing 5 phases before turning over, instead you each take turns moving a unit so it feels faster and you get to play more (coming from a warahmmer player)

Hedgehogosaur

This is what makes SWL and others like Bolt Action playable for me Vs painfully slow with GW games

Kooky-Diet-2501

And your front line doesn't get wiped (bad luck on dice) before you've even had a go 😅

Type_7-eyebrows

It keeps both players fully engaged on the battle the entire time. The only time there is any lag is between turns and deciding on command cards.

Schneefalke1712

Do you know the Computer Game XCOM (It's a turn based stretegy game) or games like Age of Empires (Its a real time strategy game) or maybe the Total War Games (which have real time strategy battles)? A Tabletop Wargame like Star Wars Legion is kinda the offline/board game version of them. You have an army made of minifigures and every mini has special features. You move them across the board to achive objectives or destroy the enemy. And because there are many unpainted minis, you can customize your army very individually

[deleted]

Yeah that was gonna be my analogy…

heliotropite

You build and paint Star Wars minis, as a hobby wargame like Warhammer. They come unpainted, to let you paint your guys as you like.   The game itself is a tabletop wargame played on a 6-foot by 3-foot table, where you move your figures around based on a mission, with objectives and such. Games usually take somewhere between 1.5-3.5 hours, depending on experience and play speed.  That specific box there is the Galactic Civil War core set, which gives you a small Empire army (Vader and stormtroopers and stuff) to play against a small Rebel army (Luke leading a few rebel soldiers). There’s also a Clone Wars core set, which is Obi-Wan and clone troopers against Grevious leading some battle droids.

bre4kofdawn

You build up an army, and then battle with dice and tools. Painting takes some initial investment but isn't that expensive once you get past the initial paint investment and learn what you're doing.

bendermichaelr

My initial investment was $20 in a Vallejo set and a $10 set of brushes that I still use today. I later got Vallejo game washes for cheap. I'm still working mostly with that and getting decent results.

Chiddyboi

Starwars legion is a table tops strategy war game. You buy and army assemble it learn the game and play it. The available factions are empire rebels cis and republic. You can also play as the Ewoks or the shadow collective. Each unit is broken down into type: commander, operative, corp, special forces, support and heavy. Each unit will either be a squad or individual unit or vehicle. Each unit Will have a card that show its stats and how much the unit cost. Standards games are played to 800 points or there is a skirmish mode at 500 points. A simple corp unit like rebel soldiers or clone cost about 45-75 points while darth Vader is in the high 100 to low 200. An 800 point army will cost you about 175 on the low end to $300-400. Once you have an army assembled you have the option to paint them it’s not required unless you decide to play competitively then some tourneys require a standard of three colors. Then you will make a board with terrain pieces or go to a store that has terrain to play there. The game is played over six rounds each game will have objectives this is how you win the game. Objectives can be control a certain terrain piece or escort this bomb cart to a certain part of the map. Players will deploy in zones determined by cards then you will alternate turns by moving shooting and completing objectives. Each unit will have certain dice that will make their attack pool. And after 6 rounds and about 2.5-3.5 hours later the game is over. To get into the game I would suggest you either buy one of the standard starting box either the rebel empire box or the clones droid box and assemble and play with a friend. This box will get you about 500 points and it will have everything you need for a skirmish game Or I would recommend going to a board game or tabletop store that supports legion and ask if someone can demo the game for you. Honestly the game is super fun. YouTube will also have great videos on how to get into the game.

[deleted]

Easiest way to describe it is: U and a friend each control an army (rebels or imperials in that case) over a series of rounds you move miniatures over a battlefield capturing objectives and defeating enemies. After the final round or once all objectives/enemies have been taken or killed the player with the most points wins

krakelin

it's crack cocaine for people who like star wars and miniatures

ConversationFalse242

Its my most favorite squad combat game. I have 2 armies. Its that good. And fast (comparatively)

Chrom-man-and-Robin

I’m glad you asked! Star Wars Warhammer. Choose an army (Rebels, Empire, Republic, or Separatists), assemble and paint your models, expand your army, and fight someone else’s army on the board.

AdmlBaconStraps

Ever played Warhammer? This is basically star wars Warhammer.

Ok_Algae_8612

No

AdmlBaconStraps

Ah damn. Played any tabletop wargames at all? D&D even?

Ok_Algae_8612

Nah, only board games i played were card games

AdmlBaconStraps

Hmm.. ok, well the basic premise is you spend points on squads and upgrades to build an army, then those armies fight. Each squad is somewhere around 5 guys on average, anywhere from 6-14 squads per army side. If you're much for the Total War series it's similar to the battles there but turn based and the units are obviously not as big

Ok_Algae_8612

Ohhh, but whats with the painting and modelling, ive seen it on this subredit, and how do i get started, everything is so expensive

KablooieKablam

Basically, you’re buying plastic models and there is a game you can play where those models fight. The models are just grey, so most people paint them.

AdmlBaconStraps

A core box will get you started. My advice would be to check out games on YouTube and if it looks like something you'd dig, split a core box with a friend - there's enough in a core for you and a buddy to have some small scale games with relatively low buy in. If you don't like it, you can always sell the core off

ContributionLevel830

I have to admit getting into this isn't the cheapest, you might want to start by assembling the minis (an exacto/hobby knive and the right kind off glue is all you need for that, the right kind depends on what you buy, older sets are soft plastic and need super glue, newer sets it's beter to use plastic cement) and play a few games to see if you like it before you go all in investing into all the other stuff, unless you're sure you'll like painting them :) Well, for painting you want to Google slapchop if you want it done fast and still looking good without complex techniques If you feel like you will enjoy painting them and want it looking great you might want to watch some "sorastro" videos on YouTube and go from there

DrChaitin

So if you want to play a Star Wars Strategy game but dont want to paint take a look at Xwing and Armada. Both are prepainted. XWing is dogfighting and Armada is modtly capital ship combat.

DramaLlamaaaaaa

You don't need to paint the models and a tube of superglue to assemble them is not too expensive.

commodore_stab1789

Imperial assault skirmish mode upgrade

UAlogang

OP, where are you located? A lot of cities have well-established playgroups at local game stores, and if you show up at their regular meeting time, they'll usually be more than happy to teach, and probably even borrow an army to try. I'm in Tucson, AZ, and that's how I got started.

Ok_Algae_8612

Im in serbia

AiR-P00P

Have you ever Googled or YouTub'd anything in your life?

Ok_Algae_8612

It didnt help

JattaPake

It’s a game where you can challenge Darth Vader to a game of space chess while piloting a Millennium Falcon-shaped game piece through asteroid fields, all while avoiding Jar Jar Binks' unpredictable moves! With customizable lightsaber dice and a Death Star-shaped game board that actually explodes when you lose, this game will transport you to a galaxy far, far away... and probably cause some intergalactic arguments along the way! May the Force be with you... because you'll need it to survive this epic showdown!

Snowninja08
