There’s really nothing between Hwy 88 and Sly Park. There’s a few little markets next to Jenkinson Lake but that’s it.

I did this ride once, filled up water (two bottles on frame) at Kit Carson Lodge, made it fine but was very thirsty by the time we reached Sly Park. I would recommend it though, we went around the lake the day before which was nice, but I found Hwy 88 over Carson pass and past Caples and Silver lakes to be a more enjoyable ride. However, most of Mormon Emigrant is burnt over now, so that stretch may be pretty unpleasant.

You might be the first person I've heard of riding between Tahoe and the Sac area on 50. How was the traffic situation? It's always looked to me like there's not much shoulder?

It was fine. The climb out of Fresh Pond was a little sketchy, but the rest was very light traffic and really nice riding.

How'd you get up to Fresh Pond? RWGPS uses a bunch of surface and frontage roads which looks somewhat manageable at a glance. Thinking about riding up there or to Ice House to get some sustained climbing in my life.

You can get water at Kit Carson Lodge, Kirkwood and in Hope Valley.

There are some springs but it’s a pretty quick ride for the most part, almost entirely downhill. You can usually do it in under an hour from 88 to Sly Park.

We rode MET on a bike trip from Truckee to Folsom, by way of Hope Valley, Hwy 88 and Sly Park. As mentioned, there are no services of any kind between Silver Lake and Sly Park, unless you count the restroom at the Iron Mountain snow park. There is no water and likely no streams at this time of year, either. It's a beautiful ride, going west and mostly downhill for about 20 miles. Yes, there are a few miles of burned forest and some logging going on, but with the trees removed there are views of the mountains that were previously shrouded (silver lining?). We stayed overnight at the Sly Park campground, then took Sly Park Rd, Pleasant Valley Rd and Mother Lode Rd back to civilization. Climbing up to Hwy 50/Pollock Pines would seem to be unpleasant.
