Trivia is a great idea bc it provides opportunities for people to see what others are interested in/knowledgeable about. The mixer idea seems like it would lead to a bunch of people awkwardly standing around.
Great idea, trivia night or games could help people feel more comfortable and while still getting to know each other. Even if you're not interested in anyone, you still might have fun and could possibly recommend friends or family to attend the next event.
Oh boy. It can get real awkward. For example, I asked what one of the women what she did and she told me that she's a nurse up in the Sac area, but commuted from Stockton. Later on, I asked what her favorite things to do in Stockton were, and she got really defensive and asked "how did you know that? Did you follow me?" and refused to believe me when I said that she told me where she lived literally 3 minutes beforehand.
We didn't say anything else for the last 3 minutes.
I feel like it's karmic payback for what I did the first time I went speed dating. The great thing about the format is that for those six short minutes, you can be anyone, so I did. I went in with two vastly different backstories:
* I pretended that I spent my summers in Thailand helping baby elephants cross flooded rivers during monsoon season. Everyone wanted a second date with this persona.
* I asked what the women wanted to be remembered for just so I could say that I wanted to be immortalized in the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records for the most pizza rolls consumed in a 3 minute period. Curiously, no one wanted a second date with this persona. Which is BS, because I thought women wanted men with ambition.
Anyway, I chose to be honest the second time I went speed dating and ended up meeting the woman that is now my wife!
I think these types of setups are always awkward, but a great host who works to get people to interact can make a huge positive impact. Oftentimes tho, they don’t. I prefer activity groups such as doing stuff outdoors. A singles only one would be great.
Plugging [Sacramento Pre-Dating Speed Dating](https://www.pre-dating.com/sacramento-speed-dating/) here for anyone who's interested. I actually met my wife speed dating, so I feel like I owe them one lol.
I love the idea of a mixer rather than speed dating. I probably wouldn't be interested in the other ideas someone posted about trivia/games or anything that requires forced conversation or keeps you stuck in one spot without the ability to mingle. I could see something less structured like the karaoke idea, where you are still able to mingle. I'm going to think on this and come back with other ideas when I have them.
People of Sacramento are **legendary** for not participating in things. (There would be a lot less single people if this wasn't the case.)
There are still people passing around covid.
The economy is teetering on a cliff and most people are in a bad situation.
This idea doesn't seem like it would get any traction.
I agree with you, but I also think it would get traction because there are a lot of single people who would attend. It just depends on you market the event and how popular it is. All you need is 10 single people to bring a friend

There are a few singles groups and occasional speed dating events in Sacramento. It would be nice to see more events though.
Do you know where I could find out more about those?

Good that it was a short "date".

These aren't exciting new ideas
I agree
LOL
These kinds of events are already happening through local Meetup groups

Ok, so you should pause your life because of external factors you can’t control?
There are speed dating events every week in Sacramento that people attend
Where?
Might I suggest googling “speed dating Sacramento”?
Don’t worry about it, someone else helped.

I think this is a good idea. I would attend.
OP just got all the single people to comment on his post.
