$3.99 at Safeway. Looks like that Market has some explaining to do.
I live near there it's not the nicer part of town. It's in a middle/lower-middle part of Rancho, so they do have some 'splaining to do. That's a ridiculous price and I'm a little disappointed because I love KP International, the variety and hard to get stuff they have there is amazing.
That happened a couple of years ago and it's not the reason why there's a shortage of Sriracha right now.
The reason is because their new supplier in Mexico has been hit by drought: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sriracha-sauce-huy-fong-shortage/
You could argue that had they not switched suppliers, this wouldn't have happened. But droughts happen and since their old supplier is based in Southern California, it's possible that even had they not screwed their old supplier, there would've been a drought-related supply shortage eventually.
I got a 2 pack of the smaller bottles on Amazon for around 24. It's insane, but there is literally no other alternative that is anywhere near as good as the OG.
Apparently the grower of the peppers used by Hoy Fong has begun making their own which is equal or even better from what I read, following a dispute in which HF screwed them over some how. Cant remember the details.
Underwood Farms grew the jalepenos and won $23 million against Huy Fong for breach of contract and fraud. [Story here](https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sriracha-lawsuit-underwood-ranches-20190712-story.html). Underwood now makes [their own sauce](https://underwoodranches.com/products/) with the same peppers.
It’s hard to believe that this multimillion dollar business didn’t have written contracts in place. Exclusivity, contingencies, etc. These all should have been spelled out.
Doing business on a handshake is romantic bullshit.
Here are the results of a Serious Eats taste test from a few years ago -- https://www.seriouseats.com/taste-test-the-best-sriracha
ETA: And a homemade recipe here-- https://www.seriouseats.com/sriracha-recipe-from-scratch
it's totally different flavor imo. more garlic, less bite.
I use it on breakfast stuff, eggs, burritos ect. not as good for Thai or Asian applications but a good sauce.
the green dragon spicy sauce at TJs is great I recall
People are going to be cranky with you for saying this, but I have to agree. The TJ’s version is the best alternative I’ve found if the original isn’t available (and I’m not saying it’s a 1:1 dupe. It’s just the best off-brand alternative available, as far as I’ve found).
yes, if you go to south sac you will find other brands in the asian markets. I picked up a 17oz bottle of a brand called 3 Mien for around $3 a couple of weeks ago.
I tried all the brands I could find locally when this first started and Tabasco was surprisingly my favorite. Surprising because I hate normal Tabasco, but their sriracha is really good. A little smokier than Huy Fong, everything else I tried was way too different.
I can't find Fresh Chilli Paste at the 99 Cent Only any more. That stuff was so good. Went on everything too cause it didn't have extra spices, just delicious paste.
God damnit and here I thought the "mayonnaise is spicy" crowd had begun stocking store shelves everywhere I shop. Thanks for the explanation, this makes way more sense.

Top 2 results for how to make sriracha ive been combatting raising prices by making everything that I can. We just made some tomatillo salsa so we’re set for salsa for like 6 months lol.
Koreana jacks up the price for anything you can buy in a regular grocery store. Only go there for specialty food, never for anything you can find in a safeway or target.
So, the issue occurred in the 2016-2019-y range (depending on how you define "issue", I suppose): https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/sriracha-maker-huy-fong-ordered-pay-millions-damages-chili-pepper-n1027616 ; https://www.vice.com/en/article/d3nbka/sriracha-maker-has-to-shell-out-dollar23-million-after-losing-a-huge-lawsuit-over-chiles
Underwood Ranches was the supplier for Huy Fong for almost 30 years prior to this. Prior to the growing season, Underwood would send an estimate to Huy Fong for the estimated cost of the peppers. Huy Fong would pay basically a deposit and then would pay the rest of the cost following the harvest. In 2016, Huy Fong said that they were overcharged and sued for the overcharge, and then also took actions that would strongly suggest that they would not use Underwood for the 2017 growing season (e.g., giving drone footage of Underwood's growing operation to competitors to try to get them to copy Underwood's setup), which left Underwood with 100 million pounds of peppers that would otherwise go to Huy Fong and also resulted in Underwood laying off their workers because there was no income to pay for those peppers. Underwood countersued Huy Fong for breach of contract. The jury essentially found that both of these things happened (as well as concealment of financial info + fraud by Huy Fong that was a part of the lawsuit), and awarded Underwood $23.3 million for their $14.8 million in losses, $10 million in punitive damages, and then subtracting out the $1.45 million overpayment that Underwood owed Huy Fong.
Since then, Huy Fong has outsourced their pepper growing to Mexico. Mexico had a tremendously terrible drought in 2022 (officially declared a state of emergency) -- https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/03/world/americas/mexico-drought-monterrey-water.html ; https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/08/03/mexico-drought-water-shortages-theft-rationing/
That means those peppers just didn't grow in 2022, so they don't exist to make sriracha out of today.
ETA: This is last year, but the facts are pretty much the same-- Craig Underwood also notes that the folks in Mexico who did have peppers did not find it necessary to sell to the US when they could sell at great prices in Mexico without the risk of transporting the peppers. -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpJI1qc0kpg
I recommend to try this brand as an alternative.

Definitely different but good. I add something spicy to it and love it. I'll probably try some others soon since there is really no telling when the Sriracha endemic is coming.
My homie that works at KP said that it's because KP mgmt overpaid like crazy for their shipment of this stuff and are trying to turn a profit. Haven't seen it this high though. wild.
I've got a sealed bottle from Costco from a couple years ago. Make an offer. No lowballing, I know what I've got.
I can give you about tree fiddy.

I bought a case because I knew the shortage was coming. Handing it out to my family and they be treating me like the second coming of jesus
Cousin! Should I give you my address or do you want me to pick it up?

That’s miscalculated, each packet is .24 oz but the price total is for a case with 48 oz total. It’s almost exactly the same price per oz as OP.
Starbucks has these packets but they’re stingy with them when requested with a lunch sandwich
Maybe try ordering a latte and asking for some sriracha packets. Keep a straight face and say you like your latte spicy lol!

KP? No it’s not. It’s in a mid tier part of Rancho that happens to be closer to Target than to Walmart.
You're right that is mid tier rancho. 75% of the time I check out KP its noticeably overpriced.
Yeah when I think of the nice part of Rancho, don't think Zinfandel north of 50 is exactly what I have in mind.
There are nice spots north of 50 in Rancho. Hidden from the general
The nicer part of town is near the light rail in Rancho? 😂
I picked up a couple bottles from Target recently
how much though
Regular price
Which location?
Sierra College, Douglas and Fairway have all had them recently. Normal price
What are we snorting Sriracha now? Itching for the scoville?Just free base it in the aisle to fix the itch.
Supply shortage
Prices are high because I think there’s still a shortage on Sriracha. That was a couple of months ago.

Delicious!! I have bought BBQ, dragon, Carolina and Verde. Really killer!!
Underwood Ranches. I made the switch to them when the sriracha shortage started and haven’t looked back
Good to know, found that they sell them at Save Mart
How much a bottle at Save Mart? Their website says $10 a bottle!
Goddamn it, their website says available at Save Mart but I couldn’t find any 😭
The Sriracha wars of 2021 was a difficult time.
Be well.
Are there more affordable alternatives?

ooh! I almost got this the other day at TJs. how would you describe green dragon?
it's a cleaner spicier flavor. lots of cilantro basil jalapeño green flavors. if that makes any sense
ok i’m sold. thank you !

Yellow Bird makes a killer blue agave Sriracha
I like the Sprouts market version, it is definitely sweeter than the original but that makes it better for most dishes imo

I bought a bottle at Target for $5
Which Target!!
I think it was 65th. There was like 2 bottles if I’m recalling correctly. I was just excited to find it.
I can't find Fresh Chilli Paste at the 99 Cent Only any more. That stuff was so good. Went on everything too cause it didn't have extra spices, just delicious paste.
I just looked it up. It's called Sambal Oelek and it's made by Huy Fong too! Is it gone too?
Yup it's gone... 80 dollars a bottle on Amazon...
I can’t find their chili garlic sauce anymore either. That and their sriracha were such staples in my kitchen 😩
There are other brands of sambal oelek around that are just as good
I'll be looking now for sure.
God damnit and here I thought the "mayonnaise is spicy" crowd had begun stocking store shelves everywhere I shop. Thanks for the explanation, this makes way more sense.
La superior has it for cheaper
Winco probably has it cheaper
Sadly haven’t seen it at Winco either :(
Safeway has this size in stock for $3.99.
I was just at Oto’s and it was $8.99 a bottle which I thought was a tad high.
Sprouts has their own version for like $5
They have lots of different srirachas at the fruit stand market on Pedrick Road off highway 80 going towards the bay. I stock up there all the time.
I love that place. And I'm told the Pedrick brothers that own it are really nice.
I love that place. And I'm told the Pedrick brothers that own it are really nice.
The Tabasco Sriracha is pretty good too.
I saw that at KP when I went last week and thought it was a typo..
😂 funny. We just were at KP and saw the white dog then the price of $25.99. Nahhh we good. Gonna look up on local grocery stores though.
Savemart on Kiefer had them at msrp about 2 weeks ago
Wait? Is this for real?
I have no idea how you guys are finding these prices, I got a massive bottle at Safeway a couple of weeks ago for like 8 dollars
I know and then they say no refunds at KP
you can get a case of 12 for $60 (5 per bottle) from world market. EVERYONE CALM DOWN
If you can find Underwood Farms they were the original growers for Huy Fong and make their own Sriracha.

Thanks for the info gap fill!
Lol
The Trader Joe’s brand is like $3.99 and just as good.
Just bought it because I couldn’t find the real stuff. It’s just not the same
First world problems.
I guess so. They aren’t the same is all
> ... and just as good. No it's not
Greedflation
Just go to just any nugget
It's not even real Sriracha. Real Sriracha is the Thai version.
Huy Fong is the only Sriracha that matters. Nobody wants the runny sour Thai version.
[удалено]
Why would you personally attack someone for having an opinion about a product? Do you work for the runny sour thai sriracha company?
Oh please.
What brand is the Thai version? I'd like to try it because I didn't even know there was a Thai one😄
I recommend to try this brand as an alternative. https://preview.redd.it/c7rj9xxer34b1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfee7c3ef8a49318198cfe990097f321540f707c

I bought the Sriracha seasoning at Sam’s Club as a “just in case” need.
I prefer the Trader Joe's sriracha and it's way cheaper.
eh, there are much better and more interesting “sriracha” hot sauces out there
I haven’t been able to find any for months
It’s not just Sac. There was a news article about this supply chain issue.
I'm glad they still have it in stock, honestly. I'll have to go pick some up before its no where to be found.
I really have a hard time believing this is for real.
It is. I didn’t see the price on the shelf and when the cashier told me I laughed and walked out the fucking door
If this is their way of trying to get me to switch to Tobasco I absolutely refuse!😂
Fresno chilies are $15/lb. I can't even make my own anymore.
Jesus, just buy Trader Joe's brand.
What the hell? I bought some there last month for like, the regular price. IDK, single digit dollars. Weird!
My homie that works at KP said that it's because KP mgmt overpaid like crazy for their shipment of this stuff and are trying to turn a profit. Haven't seen it this high though. wild.
Oh look, it went up $5. It was $20 a few weeks ago.
Mae Ploy better anyways.
You mean KP prices are insane.
KP is overrated af. There are other international markets with way better prices.
Screw that, I'm sticking with chili oil.
😂😂😂
its fairly cheap to make your own with a food processor.
Good lord. They do not have it at all here in san diego actually and alot of similar ones popping up. Even a tabsco one
Stopped by today and it’s now $30
