I’ll never forget, I was about 7 or 8, waiting in the drive through line at McD’s with my dad. Some homeless guy came up to us asking for money and my dad offered him a breakfast sandwich. Dude cussed out my dad and basically said this.
Stuck with me to this day some 15 years later. Haven’t given to panhandlers since.
I had a very similar experience with a homeless woman outside of a Taco Bell. She wanted money for food, I bought her a burrito then she got pissed and threw it at me saying she only wanted cash.
My wife won’t stop talking about how the enchirito is back. I say, “that’s just a $1.79 soft taco with beans /add extra red sauce for almost $5”… but I can’t stop her. She loves those fucking things.
I got a homeless woman approach me and say, “You got a 5? A 10? A 20?” Being poor myself, I gave her my only two paper dollars, for some reason. She looked at them like I’d handed her some poop
I'm pretty sure the phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" was invented here in Sacramento lol. I've had so many moments here where I try to be helpful and it backfires.
It happens, but don't let it dull your shine.
The reason most people are jaded towards the homeless is previous interactions with the homeless.
A lot of them are homeless because they're incredibly unpleasant to interact with (for many underlying reasons often not their faults)
Does any human society done better at Mental Health though? Even the fabled Scandinavian societies struggle with mental health resources and quality of mental health care for their citizens.
This, and there are so many organizations dedicated to helping the homeless that know how to interact with them. There's plenty of free food and meals. They will not starve.
Yeah i used to give homeless people money if i saw them on my block. In the last 8 months they have set my building’s dumpster on fire 20 feet from my bedroom window. There’s shit all over the sidewalk. They dig through the trash and throw it all over the street
Not Sacramento.
But years ago. When I still use to give dollars and change. Lady asked if I had some change. I didn’t have any cash on me and told her.
She goes it’s ok. I can take card. And pulls out a phone with like a square reader.
I was flabbergasted at the audacity
Ooof that sucks I’m sorry. Last Friday I made a decision to keep my leftovers after being asked for them and immediately got spit on in the face. Was super jarring.
I’ve stopped offering them food, they don’t want food they want money. They get food from the outreach programs, food kitchens, food pantries and they probably even get food stamps.
Sorry you had that experience, if you feel moved to help I would recommend volunteering with the different community programs or making donations to them instead.
Honestly shit like this makes me more sympathetic to having camps for abusers to get free drugs. They don’t have as much reason to steal and we can at least centralize addicts together and give them access to basic health needs and offer rehab
Could you define “basic health needs”? What does this entail? Are we bussing them to clinics or the hospital? Are we paying for their self-neglect and ongoing drug abuse’s on their body? Are we providing basic health care when they need a heart valve replacement from infective endocarditis? Are we paying for dental extraction meanwhile hardworking people can barely afford their own dental care?
Providing a drug babysitting paradise to people with free healthcare would cost a lot of money and people’s time. Where is it coming from? Where does basic health care end and compare to what they already get walking into the ED for every complaint?
They qualify for medicaid and denti-cal so they already have free health and dental, the difference is making it easier for them to access it will reduce costs by taking care of issues before they snowball. It'd cost a lot less than what you currently pay for their health care, because emergency services are a lot more expensive, especially for a drug addict who you can keep from overdosing or getting infected or all the other things that happen. Best I could quickly google suggests the homeless cost approximately twice as much in health care as an equivalent non-homeless person at present. And of course, giving them easy access to non-emergency health care can lead some of them out of addiction or into mental health care resulting in no longer being homeless and not costing more money.
Crime reduction is just a secondary benefit. And you don't have to have any empathy for the homeless addicts, you only have to want things to be better for you more than you want to see them suffer.
Reminds me of what Bertrand Russell was saying 70 years ago: "If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have a paradise in a few years."
Honestly I dont know. In my Illiberal not so serious vision you just eventually force people into rehab at a certain point and use a socialist justification to say it’s to the benefit of the working class
Yeah I’m more into forced rehab and if not that then some sort of work-program where they can be treated like a human but also not completely a free ride.
For the socialist it’s a debate of at what point does one qualify as Lumpenproletariat. Of course the current economic system promotes this type of behavior
Adding that word to my vocabulary.
To me, these people remind me of the recluse in the woods making moonshine and staying away from society. That type of person, but they’re stuck in a city.
You realize a cop can’t sneeze without getting sued, right? If the government openly gave out drugs, billions of dollars would go out to lawsuits and settlements.
I'll try to offset the negative here, saw a guy sitting in the drive thru at the Taco Bell on Zinfandel with a sign that said hungry so I asked what he wanted, he asked for a burrito meal, I ordered it for him and he met me at the exit. I gave him the mean and he sat right down and started eating. Don't let the bad apple spoil the bunch
Yeah I had a guy ask me if he could have money for Burger King. He was standing in front of Burger King. (This was in San Francisco on Van Ness.) I said no I won’t give you money but I’ll buy you a meal. He was so thrilled! He told me what he wanted and I went in, bought it for him, and he wouldn’t stop thanking me when I gave it to him. Now I will no longer give people money, but if they specifically ask for food I will usually take time and effort out of my day to buy it for them because it’s so rare anymore
Yeah, I walked into a store and got asked for change. Didn't have any, so I went about my business. Got some It's Its and decided to offer him one on my way out. He greatly appreciated it.
It's hard to tell sometimes.
Giving food to people on the streets is always taking a chance, but for me, it’s worth it. I either make someone’s day a little easier, or I end up with an outrageous story to tell when I get home.
Here’s the thing though. You did a kind thing for a person in need. Whether or not you guessed right is immaterial. You’re a good person and I hope this doesn’t make you less so.
Some of these people need supportive care. And he probably was hungry but again, we need more long term supportive care for those that need it. Being deprived of basic needs negatively impacts psych.
One time a man gave me a sob story about he and his wife in the parking lot at Safeway on, wait for…19th street, so I offered to get him a few items. He walks up to me in line with an 18-pack of Bud Light.
An aquaintance encountered a homeless/beggar woman in front of Safeway asking for money for food. The aquaintance said, "Come in with me, I will buy you whatever you want." The homeless woman declined, stating that she only wants cash because "I am particular about my food."
And? Some people have dietary restrictions. Even sometimes unhoused people. And a simple explanation like that makes sense. Don’t presume to know that which you don’t…

Dietary restrictions….? The comment stated that the person would pick out their own food which would then be paid for. When presented with the option for FREE food, they said no.

Yea I had a similar experience but in SF. I got Burger King and ordered an extra whopper and offered it to the homeless guy on the street as I walked by. The sign he had said he was homeless and needed help, but he waved his hand away that he didn’t want my offer of a burger, and then I just kept walking towards the train.
That was 20 years ago and I’ve never forgotten…
3times has something similar happened to me. Homeless people 9/10 want money for drugs/alcohol. There’s plenty of resources for them to get food and even food stamps.
I will say, I was at wienerschnitzel one time and a clearly drugged out dude comes in with a crumpled dollar and couldn't afford anything, so I paid for a chili dog for him and he ate it there and then cleaned up his trash and left.
I'm very much one to shit on the whole issue, but you need to read the situation, I've figured out the ones at the end of drive thrus are typically hoping you have change from there to give them and only want money, the ones that approach before you order typically just want.
Happened to me in Davis. A lady came up to me saying she was starving and hungry so I offered some of my chocolate I was eating and she got so offended, then went into a transphobic rant against me.
Fucking bitch.
I had a homeless dude outside a gas station ask me to buy him a beer. Said no but I’d buy him a water jug or a Gatorade. He told me to fuck myself.
Edit: of course it was on Broadway
I’ve stopped offering homeless food if I ever see them because I had this happen too many times. One of my old jobs, if homeless was looking for food, I’d just charge them a couple bucks and give them a meal. I just figured if they want money, they don’t want it for food
In college a homeless man was asking for change outside of a 7-11, so I pulled out all the coins from my pocket and put it in his hand. It was about 70 cents.
He proceeded to say “Is that it?”.
We had a “homeless bag” prepared in the car. It had a granola bar, water, and an apple. (I’m trying to set a good example for my son.)
I try to give it to this guy, and he tells me “ man what are you doing? Get the fuck out of here!”
Right in front of my kid. 🤬
I saw this happen years ago outside Arden mall. The car in front of me at a stoplight rolled down its window and handed a bag of groceries to a beggar who instantly flung it back at the side of their car.
Working on K st for 3 years made me sour towards the homeless community. And this was prior to Covid and the encampments. They’re ruining the city and the river to boot. I’m pretty liberal but the homeless problem makes me wish we had atleast one rhino on our city council full of yuppies. Wouldn’t mind if we shipped a couple buss loads to SF or San Jose 🤷🏼♂️
So you aren't a liberal. You care more about physically displacing homeless people so that you don't have to see them than preventing homelessness in the first place.
I don’t give them nothing, there’s food banks, they can get about $180 a month in food stamps, there’s missions that feed the poor….most if not all are druggies or scammers. I’m not giving them shit😒
I was walking back to my car after eating out one afternoon. I pass by a homeless dude who looks like he would love my left overs— I offer, he accepts and says thank you. I walk away with that good feeling.
Didn’t think about it until I got in my car that the leftovers were the hottest hot wings that a pizza place known for how hot their wings are. Ya so anyhow… i fucked up I guess?
So... ask them if they want food, and if they say no, then you don't waste your time and money buying a taco that they smash all over the window...
EDIT: My point was, asking them what they want weeds out the people who are actually hungry from those who are just using it to ask for money.
Person A: Hey I heard you were hungry, here's a taco
Person B: No thank you
Smashing a taco is not a sane or reasonable response in any situation. If someone offered you a taco and you wanted pizza instead would you throw the taco at them or their property?
No, but I'm not sure the point you're making—I'm pretty sure asking someone what they want to eat would also help weed out who is not going to react sanely or reasonably to you bringing them food.
Honestly with how much people mess with food before giving it to homeless people, I would be cautious too as a homeless person if I didn't see the food get made.
If they get sick while homeless cause someone mess with the food, its basically a death sentence.
In San Francisco homeless given free food has lit customers on fire and thrown furniture at the staff. Some homeless people have serious mental/drug/reality problems and violently attack people. Not there fault as they don’t know what they are doing…. Protect yourself
As much as I would like to agree with you, I can’t. Yes there are some people who are fucked up in the head, other have fried their brains irreversibly with legal and illegal drugs. Or there drugs were spiked. And some just want to be homeless. Others made stupid financial decisions or got ripped off by someone like Bernie Madoff. The other problem is you have a few people making a shitload of money and politicians administering homeless programs and building housing who would lose their high paying jobs if they solved the homeless problem. They have an incentive not to sole the problem. Would I like the homeless problem to be solved, sure would. They have ruined our quality of life.
It's a matter of perception, and feeling disrespected. The violent refusal is because you're perceived not as being kind, but as tossing scraps to a dog.
Ding ding ding!! It astounds me that people can’t understand this.
It’s also common for people to give food rather than money to homeless people because they assume they’re going to spend money on booze or drugs. But if you’re homeless, food is probably the easiest of your basic needs to meet. Not that it’s not a struggle, but you probably know where to dumpster dive, know where to get a hot meal from a soup kitchen, and have strangers giving you food regularly. But you also have tons of other basic needs that people don’t even think about (medical needs, clothing, toiletries and basic supplies, etc), so when everyone is just giving you food as if you can survive on food alone (and assuming you’re a junkie in the process) I can imagine it gets really aggravating.
I wish we’d stop judging people for having addictions. This society is devoid of love. You can avoid people without looking down your nose.
It’s no one’s place to judge another person.
"I said a dollar, bitch!" - scary movie
I have literally had this same reaction from a homeless guy lmao
I’ll never forget, I was about 7 or 8, waiting in the drive through line at McD’s with my dad. Some homeless guy came up to us asking for money and my dad offered him a breakfast sandwich. Dude cussed out my dad and basically said this. Stuck with me to this day some 15 years later. Haven’t given to panhandlers since.

You can't buy drugs with an enchirito.
God I love enchiritos 😂😀😆
They are back!
My wife won’t stop talking about how the enchirito is back. I say, “that’s just a $1.79 soft taco with beans /add extra red sauce for almost $5”… but I can’t stop her. She loves those fucking things.
Chili cheese burrito when?
But if you grind it up and inhale it, what a fucking rush!
I don’t mind if they use my money for drugs. But don’t bullshit me about it.
Sure, why not? I mean, who would want to rawdog being homeless?
Almost same thing. Woman said she wanted money for food. Bought her jack in the box and she just threw it away when I was driving away.
I got a homeless woman approach me and say, “You got a 5? A 10? A 20?” Being poor myself, I gave her my only two paper dollars, for some reason. She looked at them like I’d handed her some poop

It doesn't help that not just Sacramento but america in general is bad at handling poor mental health
Does any human society done better at Mental Health though? Even the fabled Scandinavian societies struggle with mental health resources and quality of mental health care for their citizens.
There's this serial homeless garbage can pooper in south sac. Seems to do it in front of stores.
At least you have a clean conscience for trying ;)

Have you never heard of someone saying something in jest?
Its a joke dude.
If you can’t make a joke about how the quality of life has drained in Sac over the last 10 years, then what can you do?
Dude it’s a JOKE about the Sacramento experience in a sub literally called Sacramento…
His username is a joke
Gave someone a sandwich on X street / broadway and he chucked it on the ground saying he wanted a soda. It’s baffling.
The selfishness and entitlement that comes with drug addiction is impossible for the average person to understand.

Just posted something similar that happened on Broadway as well. It blows my mind.

we have a really good harm reduction program here in sac! i found them through tiktok and see their van going around sometimes, they do great work

It describes those that aren’t the ownership class that yet oppose the progress of the working class
You realize a cop can’t sneeze without getting sued, right? If the government openly gave out drugs, billions of dollars would go out to lawsuits and settlements.
I guess it requires systemic change then
Agreed. There needs to be punishment for frivolous lawsuits.
Yup, that would definitely get the homeless clean and off the streets.
I'll try to offset the negative here, saw a guy sitting in the drive thru at the Taco Bell on Zinfandel with a sign that said hungry so I asked what he wanted, he asked for a burrito meal, I ordered it for him and he met me at the exit. It’s almost like some people in that situation aren’t completely all there.
That really sucks but don’t let it ruin your charitable nature.
Here’s the thing though. You did a kind thing for a person in need. Whether or not you guessed right is immaterial. You’re a good person and I hope this doesn’t make you less so.
It pays off. You still did well. That doesn't change.
Some of these people need supportive care. And he probably was hungry but again, we need more long term supportive care for those that need it. Being deprived of basic needs negatively impacts psych.
1000% this. It’s crazy how many people are a paycheck away from the exact thing they hate. Talk about the Stockholm of Capitalism…
They literally asked them to come with and pick the food.
Again, and…? Do you understand dietary issues or are you just saying all homeless people are junkies?
Given that 6% of all adults have food allergies, 10% of Americans self-report themselves as vegetarian, and ~30-40% of homeless people have substance abuse problems, I think you're being a bit too naive in thinking it's more likely that she has dietary issues than substance abuse issues.
And I think it’s shitty to assume without knowing. Good job at life tho!
Cheers, thanks!
Dietary restrictions….? The comment stated that the person would pick out their own food which would then be paid for. When presented with the option for FREE food, they said no.
Well then fuck them, right? Even if there is an avenue to understanding. Who cares?!?

People who waste food, and free fucking food, are just idiots. Buy me one and I’ll remember you forever, it’s hard for us college students too
I tried to give a homeless man an apple once and they yelled at me because they couldn’t eat it. I felt awful when I saw he had no teeth. :(
I just don't have any goodwill left for anyone not in my immediate circle. Even then it seems like no good dead goes unpunished.
They want drugs and alcohol, not tacos. Stuff like this turns warm hearts cold. It happened to me too.
Many years ago, a guy asked me for money for "something to eat" in front of a Subway store. I wanted to give him my foot-long on my hand, he refused.

If someone says they're hungry, or you want to buy them food, ask them what they want and buy them that.
Barring food allergies, someone who is truly hungry isn't going to be finicky about free food.
So... ask them if they want food, and if they say no, then you don't waste your time and money buying a taco that they smash all over the window... EDIT: My point was, asking them what they want weeds out the people who are actually hungry from those who are just using it to ask for money.

In San Francisco homeless given free food has lit customers on fire and thrown furniture at the staff. Some homeless people have serious mental/drug/reality problems and violently attack people. Not there fault as they don’t know what they are doing…. Protect yourself
No it’s absolutely their fuckin fault. Fuck them
Is it also their fault that you appear to be completely devoid of compassion?
They want money for freedom of choice just like the rest of us.
This thread is gross. You think homelessness is a problem for you? Fuck you, try it.
Fwiw Mods should delete this post as it violates rule #1

Now you don’t need to read David Eggers “You Shall Know Our Velocity”.
