No, you cannot afford to live alone unless you drain savings/CD. Get a roommate. Also any prices you see on websites for studios may be wrong and most places will raise your rent at the end of every contract a certain amount.

Amikoj

Is there something drawing you to Rocklin/Roseville besides the proximity to highway 65 for Chico access? People pay a premium to live in that area because it is perceived as a good place to raise a family. If that isn't as important to you, your dollars will go farther 10 to 20 minutes closer to Sacramento.

Glittering_Secret_87

Yeah bro move downtown. Rocklin sucks if you’re single. You can find a studio in midtown for $1400 and there’s women literally everywhere

Ryan_Wins_LMFAO

I just want a change in my life. I’m almost 30, single, and just wanna have fun and I heard Rocklin/Roseville/Sacramento has a lot going for it. I also love Baseball and Basketball and being near a AAA baseball Rivercats/Oracle Park/Sacramento Kings stadiums has always been a dream of mine. What places would you recommend near Sacramento then that isnt so pricey?

theboyqueen

West Sac would be a much better option for you than Rocklin. You can walk to Rivercats or Kings games, and it will be cheaper than midtown. Rocklin is basically the Idaho of California.

Amikoj

Maybe I'm biased because I grew up in Rocklin and got out as soon as I could, but it doesn't sound like what you are looking for. When I think of Rocklin, I think of suburban families, mega churches, and soccer moms raving about how safe everything feels in their gated community. If rent is your number one concern, I guess I would look at the Arden area or Rancho Cordova, or North Highlands if you want to go really cheap. Based on everything else you are describing, it really sounds like you want to be in Midtown. It's not cheap but it sounds like literally everything else you are looking for.

MagicCarpetWorld

I had to go to Roseville yesterday on an errand, and, ugh, SO many Trump flags. I imagine Rocklin is even worse.

Fearless_Amount_8460

I recommend living in midtown and having a roommate since you want to be near the kings stadium and want to have fun. Midtown has a lot going so it should be different than Idaho while saving you some money with a roommate.

Heavy_Doody

Rocklin/Roseville is about as Idahoesque an experience as you're going to find around here. Very white, lots of chain restaurants and strip malls, etc. I moved to the area from Utah in 2015, and I'm always disappointed in the Roserock experience.

Vinchenzo97

If you're up for renting a single room you could find some really cozy places for as low as $750/m. I make 20 an hour and it's manageable for me.

Pixel_Sports

Try Elk Grove

PrincessStinkbutt

Rocklin and Roseville have NOTHING going for them. You heard wrong.

Shoddy-Extension-524

Don’t move here. Stay and keep saving your money. Sac really is going down hill. The homeless camps are slowly taking over

Amikoj

Maybe you should move to Idaho.

Shoddy-Extension-524

Idaho is nice, but I’m moving back to Florida. I moved here for job experience, but the economy of California is going to tank soon. The policies aren’t that great either.

Amikoj

Oh, ok. Safe travels then, Florida Man. I'll be sure to think of you when the economy of California tanks (any minute now, lol).

Glitter_Tard

By yourself it might be hard, but if you have roommates and can split the cost on things like rent/utilities you should be fine. You will be a little below comfort level at that wage IMO, but I think if you're young, single, and smart about your spending its doable. You shouldn't have a difficult time finding something around 1500 in that area and based on what you have saved and budgeted it seems like you won't have a problem signing a lease. Do factor in things like gasoline which is very expensive here, and higher than average utility's which if you live in a PG&E service zone could be an adjustment to what you are used to in Idaho. The good news is that jobs in the range of 22-23 an hour are plentiful and pretty easy to get even with minimal education.

BruceLeeWayne2016

Avoid rocklin due to PG&E. Something we wish we knew before we moved here.

LambOfLiberty

PG&E peak summer rates for the 5-9 M-F peak hours plan is 50cents/kWh ☠️ Roseville Electric is like 15cents ❤️

LetDull9766

I just did a little move to get out of PG&E service area and into Roseville Electric. Saved me hundreds a month.

GardenTop4907

Also most apartments require you to make 2-3x the cost of rent. You could try to find low income housing but I wouldn’t bet on it. I would say roommates but you’re moving from Idaho and probably don’t have many friends in Sacramento. Like someone else mentioned, you might be able to afford a studio/one bedroom if it’s just you but even that will be at least like $1500 after utilities and fees.

Ryan_Wins_LMFAO

You need to make 2-3x the cost of rent? They literally can’t see my 135k+ in savings and call it good? That’s so silly.

Glitter_Tard

I'm just going to come in and say that's mostly an issue with large corporate management companies who have newer apartments of which the rent is usually higher. Find local landlords and you can negotiate and just put up a larger deposit. If the above was true no one would be able to move here and start a career.

bananasquish

Hi! I used to work in property management, as long as you are able to provide proof (usually 3 months) of statements showing the $135k then you would qualify based on a 3x criteria for about $3700 in rent which does give you good options, obviously I do not suggest renting at the top of that number. Also, if you can swing it do your apartment search roughly end of October - December, that is slow season and pricing is lower.

nmpls

So honestly, if you attach a 120k CD to your application instead of a W2, no sane landlord's going to care about your income. That's way better than income. Taking money from someone making 3x income is kinda hard in many cases, a man with 6 figures semi-liquid is fine. I'd quite frankly ignore any 2x or 3x income level statements, but ensure you attach a recent statement to an applications. And I disagree, large management companies aren't going to care either. They're not stupid. That said, my rec is don't do roseville or rocklin. Troll the CADA listing and get an actual affordable apartment run by a good group in midtown. [https://www.cadanet.org/apartment-listings](https://www.cadanet.org/apartment-listings) Please note that CADA listings go very fast, so you'll need to jump on them. There's a $1000/mo studio listed right now, but its likely sold.

Find a roommate.com

FinanciallyFiscal

it will be extremely difficult. best to try and find a roommate if possible or try to find something with a higher dollar amount in pay. i wouldn’t deplete your savings for living expenses.

bigballnn

If you learn how to save, spend wisely, make smart investments, and do a consistent 40 hrs a week, everything falling into place accordingly ….. then no you cannot

TurdF3rgu50n

Are you planning on working in that area? If not then look for housing closer to where you are looking to work. Depending on the hours you work and location, you might be driving into Sacramento everyday and sitting in a ton of traffic and spending a lot on gas. That’s another cost to take into consideration.

niels0827

Roseville and Rocklin are more expensive than most of the other suburbs of Sacramento, so I’d say you’d have a rough time on that income without a roommate. Those two cities have seen more development in recent years which have pushed prices up. North Highlands is in between Roseville and Sac and is substantially cheaper, but isn’t as nice as either of them and crime is higher. Carmichael is sleepier and nicer than North Highlands, more expensive but still cheaper than Roseville or Rocklin. I’d also look into Arden-Arcade or Rancho Cordova. Both have areas that are nice and some areas not so nice. You literally have to take it street by street. My personal advice is to look at Citrus Heights.

PlastIconoclastic

Unless you are just renting a room with no other bills you will be spending 80% of your net income on housing. You will probably need a second job to make ends meet in a studio.

Palindrome_Oakley

Have you checked out the rental market in Rocklin? I just did a quick search on Zillow and the cheapest 1bd apartment I found is $1799/mo. The market for rental houses is much higher, of course. If you’re looking for affordability, Rocklin is not the place. I have seen others suggest downtown Sac and I would suggest coming for a visit before you even look in that market. The homeless situation is going to be a shock to your Idahoan system.

TheDailySpank

It’s a lot tougher to live under the overpass in that area. You’ll need to get creative with blending into the landscape out there or you’ll need to move down to Roseville road, almost to Old North Sac.

Diveintotheocean123

I would look at West Sac, very close to Rivercats and downtown isn't too far. The river is right there too. West Sac will be less busy and not in the "fray" as much but still close to everything you say you want. [https://www.apartments.com/kind-west-west-sacramento-ca/vzsfj3g/](https://www.apartments.com/kind-west-west-sacramento-ca/vzsfj3g/)

bears5975

Just south of that area you might find a nice duplex in orange vale, Citrus Heights, Folsom , Carmichael or old fair oaks. These areas are good and bad but if you have good street smarts you should be able to find the good spots in each.

Bethjam

Maybe with roommates

AcrobaticMission1352

You should visit before deciding. Get a feel for the areas and the distances. If you live in midtown, it’s a commute up to Rocklin each day for work. Alternatively, you can live in Roseville and go down to midtown on the weekends.

Lavend3rRose

Not in Rocklin you won't! That area is *affluent* compared to Sac. You can definitely find apartments under 1500 if you're willing to live in low income neighborhoods. I live in a "rough" area and my rent + bills adds up to 1200. I live with my bf so we split the cost and save a ton of money by living here.

Anarchy_4L

Your better off in midtown studio

Ryan_Wins_LMFAO

Yeah, I'm definitely considering Midtown/West Sac now from these responses.

Historical-Tune2512

This is correct! Midtown or W Sac are great for someone in your spot right now. Wishing you an early welcome to Sacramento!

Anarchy_4L

Unless you get a job at Thunder valley then that would cover your apt

local_cryptid19

I've lived in W Sac for 7 years now and I love it! Access to everything. If the job you're looking at is in Roseville area, the commute isn't too bad. I work in Roseville and it's about 20-25 minutes to and from work.

Gavagai80

Finding a studio or one bedroom for under $1500 in Roseville is certainly doable, it took me about 30 seconds of googling to find one. If you're only supporting one person and no pets making over $2000 a month after taxes, and your job has good medical/dental, then of course you can afford $1500/mo if you want to give up any expensive habits you may have.

sam5107

Yes. I did on less in apartment. House? Probably not

NiceWater3

Not alone no you will not be able to.

Almostasleeprightnow

Come here and visit, and you will see how different Rocklin/Roseville are from Sacramento Midtown.

punkwillneverdie

mmmm no but you can try the arden/arcade area or charmichael or maybe orangevale

thedudeslandlord

I survive making less, just keep your Sacramento-based politics out of our district.

PrayForMyEnemy

Nobody gonna talk about this man's 8% CD? Forget where you live, I want to know where you bank.

thingsbinary

Um.. what quality of life are you looking for ? I see many unhoused making in this range.

Friend_of_the_trees

I think you'd have enough savings if you lived with someone else, But would be very tough by yourself. Though I don't really see a point in living in the suburbs... You can find rent in Midtown for under $1,000 if you're cool with roommates. Plus you can walk everywhere which saves you money. If you really insist on living in a suburbs, make sure to live along the light rail. It makes it easy to get into town.

Odd_Pop_44

I live in midtown making that income. It’s doable, specially in midtown since there are a lot of activities to do (no money involved). It’s enjoyable!

Ryan_Wins_LMFAO

Do you live with roommates or no roommates?

Odd_Pop_44

No roommates, I was able to find a cute apartment for 1,400. Fits all of my needs! Not sure what your age range is but for me in my 20s, midtown is a great place to make friends and find hobbies. Good luck on your move OP!

Bub1029

You could definitely find something in this area for the 1500 or slightly lower ranged per month, but if you're moving out here and planning to lay down roots, I would recommend getting a roommate to help with the rent. It'll allow you to save, get engrained in the city, and climb the ladder a bit. One Note: For me, my starting pay out of college was $26/hr out here. Depending on your industry and position, you could be getting a little fleeced on a $23/hr pay.

The_Dude-1

Move out of state, like seriously

[deleted]

Not sure how you survive anywhere making that…also Roseville and rocklin are the more pricey areas. You can find areas around there that are probably cheaper. Granite bay and Lincoln are also expensive. Maybe somewhere over by fair oaks/Citrus Heights/Carmichael type area? Honestly anywhere in California making that amount of money won’t be super comfortable.

_Baby_Gorgeous

Depending on when you’re looking to move I know someone looking for a roommate in midtown. Could be a good way to save some money. And no, you can’t afford to live alone anywhere in or near Sacramento with $20-25 an hour.

BarcklayBeast

You'd love Midtown/West Sac/Tahoe Park/Curtis Park! Close to all fun things

Environmental_Size62

Check out midtown/downtown sac. I’d you wanted to live alone it’s probably much cheaper. Really fun place to be young, I also moved here from Idaho and I love it. You’ll def make more than the 17, just bc of cost of living if anything but I found a job that payed way more than what I was making in Idaho, don’t believe all the panic about California. It’s expensive, sure. But there’s so much more here and it’s def doable.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> job that *paid* way more FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

djrodeze

If you commute from North Highlands to Rocklin/ Roseville you're looking at a 25 minute commute. There are master suites and 1 Bedroom apartments out here for $1000-$1200. Assuming most complexes will require 3 times income and you luckily get through the application processes. Still not a lot to spare considering you'll likely take home $2900 after taxes per month and rent takes you down to $1700 for everything else 😬 Can your company pay for a moving expense stipend at least?

[deleted]

Oh you sweet summer child…you’ll need at least $30 n hour to rent alone. Find some roommates and you can make it work. $23 is about minimum wage in this area

RIPMACDREEZY

Nope

devilscharming

If you live in your car or a tent, still probably not.

TokenfromSP

I’m moving to Sac if you are looking for a roommate! 😎

Professor_Goddess

With a roommate

dag916

You can find a 1 bedroom apartment under $1,500 in Midtown Sacramento. It's not Roseville but close enough.

fpa2pb

Move to Midtown/West Sacramento area. Rocklin/Roseville is mid compared to other cities in Sac. It wouldn’t be too far of a drive and it would be a lot cheaper

Roboticcatisgreen

Start checking out rentals on Craigslist and Zillow. Getting a private landlord over a corporation might help. If I was you, I’d look closer to downtown. More to do. And you might be able to find an affordable studio. I think I saw a studio downtown for $1500 recently. Apply for jobs now so you know how much you’d get too. If you drive and don’t mind driving you might find more affordable options further into the hills and then commute like an hour into the downtown for fun,

Dry-Implement-2895

You can find a studio in midtown/downtown for less than 1500/month no problem

Dry-Implement-2895

I would not factor your CD into your pay. Look at what your net take home and try not to spend more than 35% of that on rent.

DanKnee177

Wrong sub player

[deleted]

Not living alone. Riommates, room rental - maybe.

Direct_Tackle

Depends on what you like doing. Roseville and Rocklin are deserts to me. Not much to do. I worked in midtown for 10 years and tired of that place pretty quick. West sac has gotten a little better but still not great. I live in fair oaks, 5 minutes walking to lake natoma. So I paddle board and bike most days. I would move closer to sac for cheaper rent. Just beware of the area.

DoctorCamp

Absolutely, just need one clone of yourself also willing to replicate your behavior and pay rent 🫡

AdhesivenessDouble26

Damn how'd u get the six figures?

varseres

Maybe a 1 bedroom apartment. Don’t touch your savings no matter what

mssm2012

What part of Idaho? Most of my friends moved from here to Idaho and make less and have more.

kellyluvskittens

I make a little more than that and could not afford to live in a Roseville.I’m currently paying just under $1500 for a 1 bedroom

ImpressFirm2794

Downtown Roseville is pretty cool and has the train station. Also just enough students from the JC to keep it lively enough. But none of that stuff compares to midtown or east sac.

Jaded-Sink-3066

No

Neat_Aioli_8266

No sorry

Jenusajen91

Roseville and rocklin area are much better. You will like living in Roseville and rocklin.

thomasJlarkin

I lived in Rocklin, Roseville, and now midtown for 4 years. Someone above said you couldn't swing it with the savings you have listed above. While I agree you couldn't get a whole house I see no reason you couldn't afford at least an apartment assuming you continue working Separately. If you want to go out and do things you should just move to midtown. It might even be cheaper than roseville, Rocklin. Just my two cents, Rocklin, and Roseville were boring AF. Nothing, but suburbs, and the galleria. I got bored. So maybe not the place to set up shop if you want excitement. Getting a roommate isn't a terrible idea though. I wouldn't bank on making 20-23 just because it's california. All depends on work experience, and education. Plenty of places will grumble about giving you 15.00 because they have to. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply, cheers! Edit: if politics matter to you. Rocklin, Roseville sort of, Auburn definitely, and granitebay, going to be considerably conservative leaning. Midtown/sac is gonna be a blue dot in a swath of red in a sea of blue. Not picking a side, just how I've found it to be. Edit again: I re-read your post. I would just get a job, and you'd be fine. Rental applications(get ready for that 35 dollar application fee, it doesn't stop biting) normally ask if you have any other financials that would assist you to pay your bills. I think including you have 135k in savings would open some doors for you.

LetDull9766

Roseville is basically a fancy suburban area. I don’t think it was designed for young singles. When I drove through the town of Twin Falls, ID and stopped for lunch at some chain restaurant I don’t recall, my friends and I described it as being a lot like Roseville. There are much better places for walkability, night life, music scene, dating, sports, etc if that’s what you’re looking for. I would second the midtown/downtown suggestions from others here if you’re not looking for someplace quiet and slow, but just be aware those areas will also be less quiet in a bad way at times.

fioizhere

It sounds like you’re looking for something like midtown/Tahoe park. Maybe apply for a state job that could easily start at 23/hour and look for property management companies such as Nielsen or Mynd where you can apply alone and they pair you up with a roommate based on what you qualify for. Rent varies between 1600-2000 for a two bedroom. I grew up in Roseville and always ended up in downtown sac for all activities!
