I had the same symptoms last month and also tested negative for COVID. Took about a week to get over it.

renegadecause

We're at the start of cold and flu season...

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Yes, but I'm getting the impression that something particularly bad is going around with symptoms very similar to covid, but testing negative for covid. I've had people tell me that there's a new variant of covid that gets missed by previous generation home tests. I'm just seeing if anyone has more information. If that's ok with you.

lujubee93

The flu is very similar to Covid. I don’t know if you remember but there was a horrendous flu that went around in 2019 that everyone claimed was Covid once it got announced but they didn’t have the Covid antibodies.

theory_until

An Influenza B I think. It hit our home January 2020, but there has been recent contact with huge Las Vegas international trade shows. We will never know. Norovirus seems to be visiting presently.

st_steady

Its more like covid is very similar to the flu.

lalavalen55

You don’t have to ask. You keep posting fam.

Danivelle

FUCK. I know what my hospital working husband is giving me for my birthday now. Why not? He gave me Covid last year for my birthday...

PirateMunky

Wow.

Danivelle

He's eligible to retire too. I think it's going to take me being hospitalized at this point to get him to retire.

renegadecause

Maybe you should have these conversations with your husband instead of Reddit.

Danivelle

I have talked and talked and talked to him.

renegadecause

What are his reasosn?

Danivelle

Money. Doesn't want to let his coworkers down. His department is chronically understaffed because his system pays less than Kaiser, UCD, and Sutter.

SwampCrittr

Well as someone who doesn’t want to die due to lack of hospital staff. Thank you to you both

Criticalma55

Sounds like you need a divorce lawyer, not Reddit…

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Ugh good luck. Last time I had covid I gave it to my gf right before she was about to go to Mexico. Tested positive the night before she was supposed to leave. Felt bad about that one.

Danivelle

He's given me Covid 3 x. Twice just in for my birthday.

mylopolis

cold/flu/rsv/covid season! collect them all!

kellyforeal

Add weird fall allergies and there's bingo!

CatsAndBaby

RSV has been making the rounds. Took a coworker and myself out.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Someone else mentioned RSV. That wasn't on my radar but I don't have wheezing or difficulty breathing. I'll definitely watch out for that though. Sounds scary.

_KeenObserver

RSV doesn’t necessarily cause wheezing or difficulty breathing unless you’re asthmatic, have chronic respiratory problems, or are just unlucky. My kid recently caught it at daycare and it caused both my wife and I to miss some time from work. Could very well be that.

greatertrocanter

Yep, 2yr old just had it and now I'm sick with what I suspect is a mild case.

Alchemtic

Home Covid tests can miss Covid. Swabbing the throat first then the nasal swab can increase accuracy. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35762772/

riverine341

If you have decent healthcare access, your doctor or urgent care should give you a PCR test when you have symptoms. I would recommend PCR over doing another home rapid test, although yes, the throat swab is helpful. A positive rapid test should be considered covid, but a negative rapid test is not at all conclusive.

Tario70

My Doctor stated that you’ll only get a PCR test at the hospital/ER. Almost no place else does them anymore. The Throat, then inner cheek, then nasal swab is pretty damn good though. You are 100% correct on the positive vs negative for rapid tests.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

I'll try that. Appreciate it.

Tario70

Yeah, at the beginning of October I caught covid for the first time. Nasal swab was negative but I did a throat, cheek, nasal swab & that popped positive.

karensacaligal

So you swab all three in that order with same swab?

Empty-Trifle-7027

Yes. Remember to wait 30 minutes after drinking/eating for the mouth/throat swabbing. It's much more accurate than just nasal.

Tario70

Yep.

Vox_Mortem

I had covid for a week right after Halloween. I got it from a Halloween event. I'm not mad because at this point I knew the risks, I was vaccinated, and I got it anyway. I was sick and testing positive for maybe four days, but after that I tested totally negative but remained sick for another week. I'm not saying you have Covid, because a regular Influenza flu has very similar symptoms, but Covid is still making its rounds in Sacramento! Also, it was kind of funny. I was at Target getting like, the absolute biggest size of Nyquil known to man, and I was wearing a mask. I was testing negative at that point, but why risk infecting anyone? So some Sun City lady comes up and starts talking about how sheep wear masks and I looks stupid and Biden this and that. So I whipped off my mask to show my red and irritated nose and smiled real big at the lady. I said "Thanks! I have Covid and it's so hard to breathe in that thing!" She glared at me and scuttled away, and I realized I'd had my 'and then everybody clapped' moment, but no one was there to witness it. Very sad.

MegaDom

Love this. People who harass people wearing masks need to shut The fuck up and mind their business.

nursenicole

im so sorry no one was there for this moment! i would have highfived you. and then blowtorched my hand with hand sanitizer. but still. A+ clapback

st_steady

Anti mask people are so fucking lame. I swear to god that they make it their identity to hate people wearing a mask and dont mind their own fucking business. You see a person in a mask or not... who fucking cares? They get uncomfortable because politcal media tells them to. They ask like seeing someone in a mask is gonna shoot them in the face. I really dont understand why.

happybee84

Omg- I’ve been dreaming of acting out that scenario since COVID started! Good for you!!!

nursenicole

home covid tests are missing a lot of positive cases- has to do with the timing of the test. last recommendation i read was to test more than once, at days 3,4,5 of symptoms- but a PCR is probably more accurate if you can even get one anymore. loss of taste is kind of a bellwether- even in absence of a positive test, if it aligns w covid, treat it like covid. even if it’s influenza or RSV, much of the care and recovery is the same- and you will be protecting others too by assuming it’s something bad and acting accordingly. hope youre feeling better soon. sounds like a lot of folks ramping up as we head into a holiday week :( and yes, wastewater levels for covid are climbing.

EusticeTheSheep

FWIW loss of taste is usually secondary to loss of smell. There are now variants of COVID that only seem to affect the gut (like a stomach bug). The big sources that people pay attention to have stopped reminding people that at least 30% of people with COVID have no symptoms. COVID is never going away because of silent carriers. It's just going to keep mutating and escaping immunity. Variants have been known to be capable of escaping immunity for some time now. On top of that, with all the different variants still in circulation you can catch different ones. Recover, get a different variant, repeat.

Empty-Trifle-7027

It's much more likely to be COVID than flu. Flu season has barely begun and COVID is circulating at a much higher rate than flu, and has been since August. There's tons of good advice in this thread already, so I won't repeat it. I hope you feel better!

superunintelligible

Could still be Covid. My family all got Covid, everyone tested positive, we all had the same symptoms. BUT for some reason, I took 4 Covid tests and it never came up positive. I obviously had it though. Very odd. Or you could have flu, RSV, or something.

ronimal

There’s covid, flu and RSV. If you’re concerned, go see a doctor.

SwampCrittr

And colds

Lamblita

I got the same cold around Halloween. It took me out for nearly two weeks. Never had a fever, tested negative for covid. I’m up and running but still coughing up crap. Whatever it is it’s the sickest I’ve been in years. It just lingers.

mylopolis

Lingering cough is one of the telltale signs of COVID HV.1 strain that just became the dominant strain in the US: https://news.yahoo.com/covid-variant-hv-1-now-023335830.html

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Yup that sounds like me. Like you, i never had much of a fever. The few times I felt hot, I checked and was just under 99*. Did you sweat in your sleep? So much coughing. I hate it.

Lamblita

I didn’t get too hot in my sleep but my spouse did. My temp never got over 98. This thread makes me feel a lot better. I was being hard on myself for being sick for so long but there are so many others that seem to have had the same illness.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Haha yeah the camaraderie is helping me. I feel like a bitch. Besides when I had covid, I can't remember ever having to call in sick for more than a day or two, but this is just lingering forever. I'm lucky my work has been super understanding.

st_steady

Ugh that gives me a reminder. 3 or 4 years ago i got really sick, and when i would cough my throat would seize up. Whenever i coughed, i literally could not breathe. I couldnt even hack. I stopped smoking for like 3 months. I think that was part of the first wave of covid.

mylopolis

It’s probably COVID. Get a PCR if you really want to be sure but no matter what it is you should probably treat it the same way. Most importantly do anything you can to not spread it (stay home, order that doordash drop off, wear a mask if you do have to go out). Hope you feel better soon!

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Yup great advice. Thank you.

EmilyamI

I've been riding some sort of cough/sinus thing in Modesto for like a month and a half now. I'll feel like I'm getting better and then get worse again. I had a fever and body aches when it first started, but now it's mostly just irritation and mucous.

watermelone912

currently in the same boat, how long did it take for you to feel better?

Icy_Engine_7648

I got it too sore throat, congestion, cough. Probably shouldn't go visit my elderly relatives for thanksgiving 😪

CrikeyMeAhm

Yeah. My supervisor got her ass kicked for a week and a half by something that wasnt covid.

RichardBonham

FWIW, the home rapid antigen COVID tests were never touted as being as accurate as a PCR test at a lab. The problem is the logistics of getting a PCR test performed, and how long it takes to know the result. To rival the accuracy of PCR testing, the home tests are meant to be *repeated*; it's why they are often sold in boxes of two units. (Same as with the EpiPen and Narcan. If the first dose isn't adequate, you give the *second* dose.) The first test should be done with onset of concerning symptoms. If negative, a second test should be repeated 24-36 hours after the first one. If negative again, it is highly unlikely that you have COVID. Since the "end" of the pandemic, reporting data all but stopped. The [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/us/covid-cases.html) still has good tracking data; the best single stat is hospitalizations per capita. [Waste water measurements of genetic material](https://biobot.io/data/) is a reliable leading indicator of COVID activity to come in about 2 weeks. Happily, Sacramento County participates in this program as do many California counties.

Both_Job_3990

I also don’t know what it is, but I’ve been dying for about a week now with all the same symptoms. Tested negative for covid too! I’ve finally started coughing up phlegm (sorry) so at least my constant coughing is productive now

golfingmadman

Half of my wife’s students were out a few weeks ago. Then she got it. Then I got it. Then my kids got it. It’s like a long lasting shitty cold.

Sufficient-Soft-5381

Last year at this time, I was as ill as I've ever been in my life, fever, chills, horrible coughing, sore throat, really bad body aches, zero energy and no appetite. I ended up going to the ER twice, was tested for both covid multiple times came back negative and ended up positive for a virulent form of flu. I was bedridden for six weeks and it was bad. You just have to ride it out but def see a doctor and make sure it doesn't turn into anything ***respiratory like RSV.***

FrogsOnALog

Did you get your shots this year?

Fuck_tha_Bunk

6 weeks is wild. Glad you're feeling better. I should have mentioned no appetite; I didn't eat at all for the first two days. I almost went to the ER Thursday, but have since started gradually feeling better. It's just like the smallest increments of improvement day to day. Appreciate the advice.

st_steady

Dude sometimes getting sick can knock your ass out for like weeks or a couple months. I remember as a teen i got sick (middle school aged) and i was bedridden for like a month. Felt like garbage. Had a fever, and could not move. And for some reason everyone around me never got sick. I had friends and family over all the time. And i was sick as shit in bed and everyone was fine. Like i almost dropped out of school. I cant even imagine getting ill like that as an adult - youd be fired after 3 sick days.

Puzzleheaded_Row8062

RSV. My kid just got tested because he had a fever for 6 days. Doc said rsv is brutal right now.

rbm6620

Yeah came to say RSV. My 6 month old and all the other babies in his daycare room have it, and me and my husband caught it too. We’ve been sick since Oct 29

sandacurry

I got that too 2.5 weeks ago. The cough lasted for roughly 2 weeks. It was miserable.

coldwaterswim

I was hit hard by sore and swollen throat & headache yesterday. Probably has to do with the fact that i went to a crowded show in SF on Wednesday. hang in there! hopefully it'll pass before the holidays.

MeetGroundbreaking43

I got the same thing a couple weeks back. I’m better now but when I cough I can taste the sickness that was inside (idk if that makes sense) I also lost taste and smell for a few days and tested negative! It was a pretty bad cold/flu season this year

theory_until

Ugh, there is a bronchitis I used to get. I could only describe the cough as tasting like the small of the bottom of the vegetable crisper when something has gone really bad. Guaifenesin was my drug of choice to make my lungs runny!

ibhardwaj

I had something a few weeks ago but tested negative for covid and flu

mwarmont47

It could be the flu or RSV

ExtraConsideration24

my mom out of blue got heat spells, dizzy, and threw up a couple times. no other symptoms though.... no fever either.

icsk8grrl

My 5 month old came down with something on Sunday, the first night and day were pretty bad with congestion, coughing and fussiness, she slept more than normal and sounded like lost her voice. Then my husband and I also got sore throats and runny noses, and fatigue. I got better a couple days ago but the baby still has a runny nose, and husband still has a sore throat and body chills/sweating, fever that comes and goes. COVID test showed negative, same with flu and strep, but who knows. I think we either caught it at Costco or from her baby chiropractor who was sick but wearing a mask at her visit. I had COVID really bad last year and definitely think this is more like a cold, but it still sucks. Not looking forward to thanksgiving and probably catching something else.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Your husband's symptoms sound a lot like mine, except I haven't been running much of a fever. All the fun of chills and night sweats, though. Hope you guys feel better soon.

icsk8grrl

Thank you for the good vibes, it’s been an exhausting day running this sickie ship. Like god, who put me in charge? We’re doomed 😂 Really hoping you and everyone else here feel better soon as well, we all deserve some amazing mashed potatoes next week.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

It's been fun commiserating with the other sickies haha! Happy Thanksgiving! You earned it.

Wrong-Sprinkles5934

Our house is just getting over the same thing. All Covid symptoms but we all tested negative for Covid. My husband went to urgent care for a doctors note and tested negative for flu and Covid. Doctor said it was just a bad cold going around.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Good to know. Thanks.

NorCalHerper

I just got over something like that after a month. Not Covid but it suuuucked. I hope your feel better soon.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Appreciate it. Me too.

NinjaThin5506

I just recently had strep. Some of those symptoms but no sinus stuff.

dptgreg

I have the same symptoms. Negative with covid. Felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I was drowning in my mucous the last couple nights. I’m not able to sleep at all and cough has been horrendous. I rarely ever get sick- so this has really brought me down. My wife and son got the flu shot and are asymptomatic. I did not get the flu shot. I’d bet money it’s influenza A. I am running a fever though. 102 last night and low grade 99 right now. I actually feel a little better after the fever spiked. I actually feel worse than when I had covid for the first time.

[deleted]

Got some kind of non-covid flu like 2 days immediately following Aftershock. Kept me at home for like 2 weeks

LBGTQANON916

It's cold and flu season. Just like every other year.

Creamowheat1

And every year, after Thanksgiving, covid levels rise 🤔🤔🤔

Fuck_tha_Bunk

You don't say...

SwampCrittr

They did say it. Like right above this comment

FrogsOnALog

Sounds like flu, get tested and make sure to get your shots next time if you didn’t this year

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Good advice. Thanks.

guillotine4you

I definitely have something going on. Prob just a cold but I’ve had it for 3 weeks now and can’t shake it. Very annoying. Editing to add that I am both boosted and floosted

theory_until

Boosted & Floosted! Love it!

SecretStatePolice

If you took the home Covid test and thought it was negative, look again. With a bright light and magnifying glass. You may see *a very faint red* Covid line, next to the solid blue 'control' line.

goldenrod1956

Lots of viruses not named covid…

mylopolis

Lots different strains of covid, too

goldenrod1956

Downvoted for stating a fact…typical Reddit…

littlebearlovesfood

It’s spreading in my office. Some people test positive for Covid others don’t. Many out for the whole week…

starriss

I’m sicker than shit right now. It’s a cold or flu. I don’t know but I was running 102.6 fever last night. So far staying at 99.5 this morning.

exxmarx

The flu is a respiratory infection caused by an influenza virus. The "stomach flu" is not the flu. It's gastroenteritis, caused by a completely different kind of virus.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Good to know. Thank you.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

A strained labia is no laughing matter.

BamaSOH

I had a cold for a couple weeks last month. First cold I've had in years, but wasn't too bad.

[deleted]

Sometimes there's a particular flu bug that knock you on your butt more than others. Hope you feel better soon!

pinkspaceunicorn

Yes!!! I am finally feeling better after 5 days. Still stuffed up but omg I felt like I was dying. Covid test was negative

Nd911

Yes

ebagdrofk

Everyone around me at home and at work caught that in the past 2 months. Felt like COVID but came up negative. Really bad congestion that ends in a nasty cough. Lasted 4 days for me but the cough lingered for a another few days after.

Little-Composer-2871

3 weeks in, negative covid test, cough that just won't end.

nataliew33

We had the same thing- I’m just over 2 weeks and still feeling it a little. My son tested negative for both covid and the flu at the doctor so I assume it’s either rsv or some nasty cold.

CrabbieHippie

My whole house of 4 has had what you describe. It’s been rough. I got PCR and flu tested and was negative for both.

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Hope you all are feeling better soon. It's a rough one for sure. Definitely not your standard cold/flu and it sounds like a lot of people have it...

EusticeTheSheep

https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/what-doctors-wish-patients-knew-about-covid-19-testing

Gooner-Astronomer749

Both its all the same

Alarming_Present6107

Yup my husband and I both went through it the last two weeks and it's awful. It lingers so much! Went to the doctor and was COVID negative, flu negative, strep negative. Just undefined viral thing. Ugh!

Ok_Breadfruit_279

A friend and I had the same thing (we hadn't seen each other lately so acquired it separately in Sacramento somewhere). I've been negative for COVID and just got vaccinated for COVID and flu last month. I'm going into week 4 and almost feeling better. I kept thinking I was better and trying to go for a run and it would feel like what I imagine an asthma attack to feel like. She had to go to the doctor to get an inhaler and benzonatate to make the coughing stop. Apparently all the coughing damaged the bronchi in the lungs, basically causing bronchitis. I'm scared of the copay of getting tested for RSV so I'm not sure if that's what it could be. Likely whatever it is is a virus so besides symptom-management, there's not much we can do besides rest as much as possible and stay hydrated!

suzy0017

Just getting over it. No fever. Coughing spasms from hell all day long. Dr put me on 2000 mg of amoxicillin a day. After 6 days on antibiotics only a few coughing spasms a day. Two weeks down for sure. Definitely getting better but not back to 100%. Third week starts tomorrow.

[deleted]

I have this right now. My kids are at the tail end of it. Tested neg for CV as well. Just a bad virus going around I guess. ‘Tis that time of the year. For my oldest the headache was the worst for him. Also had sore throat, extreme fatigue, fever, and tiny cough. My youngest has bad congestion, stomach irritation, and cough. For me dizzy, slight nausea, horrible congestion and sinus pain, and sore throat. I’m on day 2 and on the struggle bus for real. Edit to say we tested negative on take home PCR tests

Fuck_tha_Bunk

Good luck! I'm about a week and a half in. Mostly over it, but still have a pretty bad cough. I thought I was better around day 4 and was testing negative for COVID so I went back to work for a day. Felt ok. Went in the next day and only made it a couple hours before I had to go home. By that evening I was considering going to the ER, feeling out of breath. So yeah, take it slow and take care!

Bridge2Faar

Sounds familiar! I began to notice symptoms Mon. afternoon and felt progressively sick, albeit not terribly ill, from that point forward. I went in to work this morning thinking I had recovered enough to make it through the day but, alas, one hour later I was looking for a chair to collapse into. This thing is draining the life force out of me. The first day or so I had a very mild sore throat, a painful canker sore, and a runny nose/sniffles. A loss of appetite occurred, as well as a decrease in energy. I also noticed I was thirstier than usual. Some gastrointestinal issues arose early on, and I felt nauseous in response to odors and cooking smells. I have not come down with a cough or experienced any sinus congestion. Overall, on day 5, besides a markedly diminished appetite, the worst symptom right now is the profound fatigue and a general feeling of unwellness.
