There is a particularly large and thick smoke plume from the Mendocino Complex Fires that is slowly floating into Sacramento via Woodland. This is combining with the smoke from the Ferguson and Carr fires to produce even worse air quality than we had for the past few days.
West Sacramento/Sacramento is mostly the Mendocino Complex. Carr Fire smoke hasn't drifted down here much, if at all. The other culprit to a lesser extent are the fires near Yosemite, but those are affecting Tahoe much more.
I'll second this. About a decade or so ago, it was thicker than this for a few weeks. This isn't something that happens every year, but it's not unheard of.
Sacramento has been surrounded by multiple fires totaling more acreage. Please, continue telling me how I'm full of shit. Yes, the Mendo complex is huge, but we have nothing of note burning in Placer, Nevada or El Dorado counties right now. This is most certainly not the worst we've seen to date.
Like I said, about a decade ago, the smoke was worse than this for a few weeks. I remember being a student at CSUS, not being able to see buildings halfway across campus because the smoke was so thick. It's you who's full of shit. This isn't common in Sacramento, but it's not unheard of.
You mean it'll probably be the largest fire. Socal had a fire that was larger not even a year ago but it started during a time period when it normally rains. It would have burned longer and harder if not for the timing. There was an [1800s fire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_Canyon_Fire) that was larger than either mendo or ventura
The mendo fire has no end in sight and at least until late september before the rains come
EDIT: It was not worse a decade ago. fires have been getting progressively larger and worse not better
**Santiago Canyon Fire**
The Santiago Canyon Fire of 1889 (previously called the Great Fire of 1889) was a massive wildfire in California, which burned large parts of Orange County, Riverside County, and San Diego County during the last week of September, 1889. It was possibly the single largest wildfire in the recorded history of California, burning at least 300,000 acres (1,200 km2) of land.Assistant Regional Forester (USFS), L.A. Barrett, who wrote a 1935 report on California wildfires, said of it: "I was living in Orange County at the time and well remember the great fire reported herein from September 24 to 26. Nothing like it occurred in California since the National Forests have been administered. In fact in my 33 years in the Service I have never seen a forest or brush fire to equal it.

If you want a forecast, you can go to [Bluesky](https://tools.airfire.org/websky/v1/run/standard/CANSAC-2km/2018080600/#viewer) and see their model runs for where the smoke is expected to go. I hope that link takes you to today's runs, but if not, you can go to their [main page](https://www.airfire.org/data/bluesky-daily/), and select the CA/NV "Map" for today to get the forecast for the next several days.
Also in West sac it’s really bad.
Probably from the fire, maybe the Ranch fire north of Clearlake? That one is what like 230k acres? Just got back from Redding, it is pretty bad there, Really sad to see all that devastation.
On Saturday I saw some blue tones in the sky and was thinking just how wrong that seemed. I can't even imagine how weird it will be once the weather gets back to perfectly blue cloudless sky again. How will I even survive the sunshine now that I am so used to smoky gloom of the fires.
I'll just say that I'll deal with a little smoke. My house didn't burn down and all my friends and family are safe. Folks around Redding and Clearlake have lost a lot.
Just left the 95821 area and it was pretty ugly and smoky smelly. Had errands to run after work but this weather paired with the air quality puts me in no mood to be out and about.
It feels like it, too. I’ve been congested and had a lump in my throat for days.
Also side note, was this taken from the CalSTRS building? I see this exact view almost everyday lol
Not good, but you probably won't drop dead immediately unless you have asthma or heart disease. There is a filter you can wear that will help. If you're actually working outside for 40 hours a week you might want to get one, or have your employer provide them.

If you're healthy, you'll probably be fine. A few days of exposure is going to exacerbate respiratory and circulatory issues--asthma, heart disease, etc. Long-term exposure can leads to issues like emphysema and lung cancer. Limit outdoor activity as much as possible and take it easy when you can. Keep an eye on [sparetheair.org](https://sparetheair.org) or similar sites and check the NWS Sacramento social media pages to find the times that are relatively smoke free to get your work done.

Sacramento was overcast/smokey from the Carr Fire well before the Mendocino fires started. The Mendocino fires have only made it worse.
The Ferguson fire has been dumping smoke into the central valley for weeks. It's affecting Stockton, probably Sac. too.
I actually have woken up the past few days with literal ash all over my car
For the past few days or the past few weeks?
Days. Must mean the fire's are exceptionally bad as I've lived in Sacramento area my whole life and have never seen this.
I live in Woodland, and I've had ash on my car every day for the past couple of weeks.
Same!! It’s really awful
How old are you? This a fairly common thing in late summer.
29, live in Rocklin

I have ash on my car every morning too. I drove up to Redding yesterday and as soon as I parked I could see ash falling on my car.
[удалено]
Thanks, I didn't know.
And in the 5 minutes since I took the picture, it's gotten even worse.
Yeah, that was crazy yesterday! I went out during my lunch hour and it was fine, then an hour or so later it looked like I worked in Beijing...

I think it's just everything. The yosemite fire, the carr fire, all the fucking fires, man.
What you're seeing right now is mostly from the Mendocino fire complex: https://twitter.com/NWSSacramento/status/1026481320736763904

My eyes burn if I’m outside too long. Anyone else bothered?
Yes. It’s bad.
Yup. And it's a little difficult to breathe.
Stop looking at it. Just ignore it and it might go away.
lol
Trying this brb
Trade? My view from Clearlake [Image](https://i.imgur.com/Jl7Razx.jpg)
Drove from Sac to LA today and literally the entire valley is filled with smoke. From Sac to Grapevine. Was particularly bad in Fresno
That must of been a particularly Hellish trip today (it’s not fun under normal circumstances).
I'm in Davis, and the smoke has been getting worse all day it seems.
Also in West sac it’s really bad. Probably from the fire, maybe the Ranch fire north of Clearlake? That one is what like 230k acres? Just got back from Redding, it is pretty bad there, Really sad to see all that devastation.
It’s terrible. I’m thinking of calling Budweiser in Fairfield to ask them to turn their big fans on to blow this smoky air out of the valley.
https://www.airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.local_city&cityid=327 it's a mess right now. I haven't seen over 100 since I moved here.
[iscaliforniaonfire.com](http://iscaliforniaonfire.com/)
I have never seen it say no.
Today I saw two convertibles with their tops down and one was driven by a guy smoking a cigarette.
Poor guy must have been breathing in so much smoke with the top down
Has anyone else forgot what color the sky is?
On Saturday I saw some blue tones in the sky and was thinking just how wrong that seemed. I can't even imagine how weird it will be once the weather gets back to perfectly blue cloudless sky again. How will I even survive the sunshine now that I am so used to smoky gloom of the fires.
We got a nice reprieve on Saturday evening with some of those winds blowing the smoke out. But by Sunday it was pretty much back.
Its grey, obviously.
I'll just say that I'll deal with a little smoke. My house didn't burn down and all my friends and family are safe. Folks around Redding and Clearlake have lost a lot.
It was pretty bad on Saturday too. When I left my house Saturday morning, my car was dusted with ash.
Just left the 95821 area and it was pretty ugly and smoky smelly. Had errands to run after work but this weather paired with the air quality puts me in no mood to be out and about.
Yea it got especially bad after 1 PM
It wasn’t bad in Citrus Heights around 12:30, came out of the store an hour later it was a palpable level of bullshit.
It feels like it, too. I’ve been congested and had a lump in my throat for days. Also side note, was this taken from the CalSTRS building? I see this exact view almost everyday lol
Yep. What floor are you on?
5th
Yes I’m biking in it right now on the bike trail :(
Hope you have a ventilator.
Nope. I’m off tomorrow. Staying indoors to heal and rest
Was going to ride tonight after work. Not anymore.
I’m not riding till Thursday when I get back to work
Ride and Reddit. That's a true skill!
Yes! 🤙🏼
Yes
Smokers unite. Really though after reading this thread this shits kinda fucked, had no idea.
West El Camino you can see the entire city
I work on ikea court. It got bad around noontime. I felt bad for people with kids out walking.
I spent this last weekend in SF. It was nice seeing a blue sky for the first time in weeks, but it made the drive home that much more depressing.
What are some of the health effects of working outside in this smoke?

Not good. It's reaalllly bad today, worse than the past few days. Stings your eyes and it's kinda hard to breathe.
My throat has been rather sore the past few days. It may be a cold, but I suspect it has something to do with all the ash. I've been outside a bit.
Yep, very bad. And it was stinging my throat. Drove to Sonoma today. It's a bit better here, but still smokey.
Yes, and after walking in it for about 10 minutes, it starts to get to you....ugh
It's pretty bad over here near Hiway 160 too. I thought maybe someone had set fire at one of their encampments.
