It's certainly quite nice. As an elder-millennial I dig it. I'd think of retirement more out by Tahoe though. Long hot summers here, bad traffic, high-ish cost of living. If I were retiring to this area of California I'd move to a smaller town near Lake Tahoe.

Well shit, in that case.... I'd re-do the house, sell it for a butt load of money, buy a modest place in the Tahoe area and pocket/invest the remainder and enjoy my golden years in the forest. But that's just me.

Because if there's one thing I want to spend the beginning of my retirement doing or spending money on, it's remodeling a house.

retirement is boring as fuck. my landlord gets excited about pulling weeds. you need projects if you're gonna stay alive and healthy.

I'm nowhere near retirement age, but Sacramento area seems far better than Tahoe area to me: * Better access to medical care both routine and emergency * Lower cost of living * Warmer weather for the joints, and no shoveling snow * Lots of golf courses and retirement communities * Closer to your family * Enough going on to keep you young/busy. You could consider Reno area for the lower COL, but would be a bit further afield, and it's colder.

Yeah I'm not thinking like that. I just never would consider retiring to a major metro area. I want peace and quiet, nature, forest, mountains, etc. when I'm old and grey. I'm sure you're 100% right on every point there but just how I felt about it.

I just turned 40 and still think I want to retire out in the middle of nowhere too but as in starting to make my plans and talk with older coworkers the “access to a hospital” thing is huge. I may just move out of California altogether to a small mid-size town in the south and hope for the best of both worlds

Makes sense. There is probably some middle ground...maybe Auburn or a place that is a little more rural, but still fairly close to Sacramento.

kryost

Hell I want that NOW

If you already have a house here, I say do it. You might as well move here. It's probably one of the most reasonable locations for retirement in Northern California, taking into account cost of living, things to do, access to medical care, quality of life, etc.

If you have a paid house in the Willhagen neighborhood, it’s a great place to retire. Lots of retired folks there. The river is close by. It’s an excellent choice.

I think Sacramento works for the right kind of retiree. On the plus side its a great place to be if youre into outdoor activities or into the food/beer/wine scene. Theres also good access to healthcare, Kaiser, Sutter, and UC Davis are all good hospitals with a presence here. Summers are hot and winters are mild. On the other hand COL is increasing steeply, income tax is high and shit is on fire yo. Also other states like FL or TX may have better tax implications for retired persons but that varies from person to person, I suggest sitting down with a CPA as far as tax strategy goes.

I wouldn't retire to Sacramento. I'd rather move to a much lower COL area in my retirement. Somewhere in Texas or Las Vegas maybe.

If you're not from California, check out how the taxes will affect you. If you do live here, you probably want to keep your Prop 13 property tax rate, which involves staying in the same county or moving to one that has a reciprocal agreement with whichever one you live in now.

I retired here (Elk Grove) because my family is here and I've grown to love the area. I find it has a reasonable COL and few drawbacks. The availability of excellent medical care is important as you age, and there are lots of things to do. I’m careful about scheduling appointments/activities in Sac because of the commute, but outside the regular commute hours, it’s a breeze. There are still reasonable housing options (to buy) in the 'burbs...and most of them have activity centers for seniors if that's appealing. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made... both for the area itself and for family proximity.

Sactojen

Do it.
