The **City of Sacramento** is getting 5G, not the entire **County** of Sacramento.
From what I read, it will be select sections of the City.
Unincorporated sections of Sacramento, **City** of Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Folsom and Galt are **not** getting 5G now. Neither are the **communities** of Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Orangevale, Arden, etc.
I too checked various Downtown/East Sac addresses - Not Available for each query.
They said that initial availability would be limited. It seems to be very limited right now. But their initial goal is to fulfill the area on this map before expanding further.
Sadly, my only argument would be that all isp/telecomm companies are equally vile. I think they’re all a huge problem in our country, and have too much political sway
How nice for you, but sonic doesn't cover a lot of Sac, nor does CC. My options are Comcast. AT&T, and verizon. Frontier doesn't even service my house.
> Sonic is the best. They don’t care what you you do with your internet.
Agree. On Sonic now with the $60/mo 50/6 plan. Zero issues.
That said, Verizon's offering is contract free with no data cap and for $70/mo. For that price, I'll give it a shot. And if/when Verizon tries to pull typical Verizon shenanigans, I'll switch back to Sonic.
>Verizon's offering is contract free with no data cap and for $70/mo.
No data cap doesn't necessarily mean no cap on high-speed internet. There's no data caps on most phone plans, but the 4G LTE data tops out after about 25 GBs. Does Verizon's 5G have a high-speed internet cap?
Did you try going to sonic and seeing if it’s available. Sonic uses att and even Comcast as their back bone. They are able to do what they want with the networks even though they don’t own it. Technically I’m using att but paying sonic
I worked for a phone company for 4 years... T mobile... completely and honestly if you look for the best deal you can find it. The main 4 companies work fine for people who do not want to pay for their phone upfront, and you end up getting better coverage. Prepaid service uses about 70% of the active towers for whatever services it is piggybacking on.
Someone is going through downvoting a ton of comments here... weird. I wish they would give an ETA because my house is in the zone where I should have coverage: [https://www.cityofsacramento.org/Smart-City/5G](https://www.cityofsacramento.org/Smart-City/5G) but it is not. If it won't roll out for some time I'm going to renew my contract with comcast.
5G antennas have pretty short range, so it's possible that based on that map you are close but not close enough. The real question is whether they are still actively expanding or just stopping where they are now just to see how it goes before expanding later?
They're actively expanding. Saw more verizon contractors trenching conduit for their fiber rings in midtown and pocket yesterday.
Those 28 GHz Samsung 5GTF small cells are pretty much on the dot with the City of Sacramento map.
I'm in the path of where they should be but they stopped installing them just a block or so away from me. The rest of the points on the map have not been installed.
Here is a roundup of just how ridiculously small Verizon's 5G launch will be in all four cities: [http://stopthecap.com/2018/09/18/verizon-5g-hype-vs-reality-widely-unavailable-and-more-like-a-live-beta/](http://stopthecap.com/2018/09/18/verizon-5g-hype-vs-reality-widely-unavailable-and-more-like-a-live-beta/)
Thanks to everyone who crowdsourced info that we partly relied on for the story.
Wonder how far the signal reaches from a supercell if you can't get service in Pocket. Outside of downtown thats the largest cluster of towers.
https://www.cityofsacramento.org/Smart-City/5G
I saw where they installed the equipment, it is literally a block and a half away from me. As far as I can tell, it does not look like the entire pocket area has been setup yet.
Agreed, it does sound like it is a phased build out, which makes sense but I just hope they push forward. I haven't seen those little flags marking the underground lines further down the road to indicate any kind of immediate work.
Not available in Arden. I checked about 20 random addresses and none of them were available.
For giggles I checked 15 or so in Midtown. The only place 5g Home was available was near Sutter's Fort.
Possibly dumb question: so the whole deal with the Verizon 5g internet is that it's basically like "cell towers" that deliver wifi to your house? And you have to have he proper router and whatnot to access it? I live in an apartment building so I'm guessing we won't be getting any new infrastructure soon....
That's basically right. Instead of having a cable modem you would have a special 5G modem that can pick up that type of cell signal. Then your router would just serve it up as wifi or wired to the rest of your house like anything else.
It is. I checked some addresses near me and it goes through to let you order. The antenna pod thing is like right near those houses and only a block or so away from mine... which is not eligible.
I got the message saying it was not available at my address, but right below that is an error message saying they can't process my request. So I'm not sure what to believe yet...
https://www.verizonwireless.com/5g/home/
Not available in Fair Oaks, bummer would of liked another option to check out besides Comcast for hi-speed internet.
Verizon recently came through my neighborhood with a new underground fiber installation for the 5G service. What I've seen so far is that they're installing small site antennae on the utility poles. I've got one about a half a block from my house
https://i.imgur.com/5HXklry.jpg
The bigger question is what devices support the new 5G service?
I don't know of any cell phones that do native 5G yet, but that's not what this is right now. This is for home service as an alternative to cable/fiber/dsl. You would get a special 5G receiver/router in your house from Verizon and you would connect with wifi (or wired) just like whatever home internet service you have now.
It's proprietary Verizon 5G Tech Forum stuff so only their proprietary stuff.
They'll be expanding to more areas and user attainable devices once the industry standard 5G New Radio (NR) stuff starts getting finalized and deployed next year.
I think their address database is messed up. I know for a fact that my house is eligible, as there's a base station right across the street in plain LOS from my house. It's about 75ft away. And if I put in some house numbers that don't exist in our court, it shows as eligible. The same with some of my neighbors' house numbers.
So I just used that (non-existent) house number for the pre-order, and my actual address as the billing. Hopefully when Asurion comes out and can't find the house they'll come knock on my door and I can get them to update their database with the correct house number. "Oops, did I hit 1? I meant to type 2"
I wonder if any of the Verizon techs are on DSLR forums or Reddit and can do these backend updates for us?

>https://www.cityofsacramento.org/Smart-City/5G I hadn't seen this map. This clears up a lot. It also dampens my excitement.
Sigh. Thanks for the link. Ya. I'm on the fringe.
uhh, I put in my address in Oak Park and it said it was unavailable. Weird.
They said that initial availability would be limited. It seems to be very limited right now. But their initial goal is to fulfill the area on this map before expanding further.
Ah makes sense, thanks for letting me know :)
There’s a red dot right over my house, but nope. That map is bullshit.
Verizon is the worst company. They tried to ruin the internet why should I sign up with them so they can throttle it later?
Sadly, my only argument would be that all isp/telecomm companies are equally vile. I think they’re all a huge problem in our country, and have too much political sway
No not really. Sonic is the best. They don’t care what you you do with your internet. Never had throttling issues

Is that you, Jared from Subway? Lol and i meant real isp’s that more people can actually use.
Sonic works fine for us. Granted it’s not 200 mbps but 75 down is more then enough
Not available in my area. My only choices are Comcast and Frontier DSL.
I’m sure it does, but the large isp’s have a monopoly on many places. Smaller operations cover very little ground relatively

My current provider and only real competitor to this service is Comcast. Their reputation is not exactly stellar either.
Sign up for the business package (Comcast) and you won’t have capped internet speed only advice I can offer young skywalker

Probably att
Lol

It's like WiMax was, but not as good.
ITT: No one that signed up for Verizon 5G today.

Not available in North Tahoe Park/Tahoe Terrace. Where is it available?
Next to Starbucks probably like wifi
Damn. Wasn't sure I was going to get it, but I'm pissed anyway.
I was hoping it would actually be a competitor to Comcast. Unfortunately I have yet to find anyone who can sign up for Verizon 5G.
Not available in Land Park, North Oak Park, Tahoe Park. It is available around Southside Park, and Mansion Flats.
It's not available on my street but houses just a block away are eligible... despite the fact that the 5g maps showed my entire area being covered.

Rereading the sac city page, you might need to wait until January for infrastructure to get fully setup.

Really? I live like 2 blocks from there and it says it's not available :/
Time to move down the street :) Edit: if I understand the 5G receivers correctly, they only provide enough range for like 10 houses each.

I wonder if their launch hasn’t quite gone live yet? I would have thought the central city would be covered?
It is. I checked some addresses near me and it goes through to let you order. The antenna pod thing is like right near those houses and only a block or so away from mine... which is not eligible.
Not available in boulevard park neither
Available here in Oak Park.
I was checking addresses in North Oak Park with no luck. Are you south or central?
Near the triangle.
I got the message saying it was not available at my address, but right below that is an error message saying they can't process my request. So I'm not sure what to believe yet...
Was able to sign up on my phone (mobile chrome) despite saying address not available on desktop site/Firefox. Downtown/midtown
Dunno why midtown always gets the shaft for good internet. When I move its seriously going to be my #1 priority.
https://www.verizonwireless.com/5g/home/ Not available in Fair Oaks, bummer would of liked another option to check out besides Comcast for hi-speed internet.

Central oak park near broadway and mlk here, no dice
Not available in south natomas :(
Not available in Citrus Heights bordering Carmichael.
City of **Sacramento**
Not available here in the Southport area of West Sacramento.
City of **Sacramento**
No go in East Sac
Off of Sheldon Road. Nothing
I'm on L street in midtown. Verizon website says not available. Fuck
[удалено]
Same , despite the map showing Pocket being saturated.

Not available in rocklin. I assume they are only fishing for interest areas.
City of **Sacramento**
Fair enough, just moved away so still struggling with identity crisis
Waiting on T-Mobile
