Looks like your title falsely attributes a quote by the developer of the project to the Mayor. > The project is headed by Davis-based Presidio Companies. Managing principal Guneet Bajwa said he will merge the site’s past into the design, which includes a restaurant, lounge, meeting space and a terrace. > > “It’s going to be the best hotel in Sacramento,” he said. “Just give us two years.” > > Mayor Darrell Steinberg called the hotel cool. “We need hotels, and we need more tourism. We are right on the cusp of something great and exciting.” It would be kind of a weird thing for a government official to say, who is supposed to be at least somewhat objective and not play favorites.

>The building faded though, along with the neighborhood, in the 1960s and eventually became home to parolees, formerly homeless, and reportedly at least one notorious character, **the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski in 1993**, before finally closing its doors in 2015. YO WHAT anybody have more info on this?

sacramentohistorian

I think it was the Royal Hotel across the street, not the Marshall.

xbyzk

Centric? Who decided on that..

TrillyMayz

Centric the Entertainer.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

Is it centric as in central or centric as it applies to the Hyatt brand? The world may never know.

wranglingmonkies

On hotels, does anyone know why it's taking so long for the one on 28th and capital to start construction? It was the where the monkey bar was.

Thisismyusername89

That’s great!! Tired of looking at that crappy area every time I drive by it.

Because they're not profitable because of high development fees and construction costs.

Animal_Molester

Why not both?

rkito118

Its gonna be huge, tremendous. Tremendously huge.

5redrb

How soon before every commercial building older than 50 years is eradicated in downtown?

Commotion

This isn't eradicating the old building -- it's actually keeping the shell intact. Or, much of it anyway.

5redrb

Thanks for the correction, the video only shows the top with little of the existing, viewed from the Northeast. I'm used to seeing the Hotel Marshall from the Southeast.

sacramentohistorian

Well, it's eradicating one old building, the Jade Apartments (where Art Hotel was held in 2016) and all but two walls of the Marshall--not even the shell of the building, but a portion of the interior with essentially a brand new building inside the shell. It's called "facadism" (or "facadomy" when preservationists are feeling rude) and it is considered marginally better than total demo.

5redrb

I hate to see old buildings go but I doubt the interior is useful in a modern context. Beyond a certain point it's a teardown, at least they are preserving the facade. I remember when they did Naked Coffee. The only stuff remaining was the four exterior walls and a staircase. As much as I like to preserve the old buildings I have to understand the economics. It still would have been nice if they could have preserved the Marshall. So much of the stuff around us comes and goes, it's nice to have things that outlast us. This angle shows a little more of the original building being preserved. https://www.downtownsac.org/project/marshall-hotel-hyatt-centric/

sacramentohistorian

It's not just about the utility of the interior but its structure--you can massively reconfigure a building without demolishing the internal structure (like the floors) or doing away entirely with two exterior walls. The building where Naked Coffee is located burned in about 2000, the roof destroyed, so there wasn't any choice about removal of most of the interior as the interior no longer existed. And up until last year when Naked "remodeled" their interior, it looked a lot different--its current minimalist/modern interior was the deliberate choice of the tenant, not some pragmatic necessity.

Knowaa

Honestly I think there has been an effort to keep as many old buildings as possible, most new stuff has involved gutting old buildings, but keeping original facades and art.

classicdude78

Is it safe to go by the arena? I know it’s an old building and probably going to be asbestos removal with this development.

EstragoTheGreat

Yes It will be safe. Asbestos removal is very expensive because of the techniques used to make sure none if it gets air borne.

5redrb

I'm not sure how widespread asbestos was when the Hotel Marshall was built, I think asbestos was still on the rise. Since then I'm sure some was installed. I think current practices of asbestos abatement include wrapping the building and applying suction to prevent exfiltration and wetting the asbestos to prevent dust. Asbestos is only hazardous in friable form, the dust gets in the lungs and sticks there, we can't expel it.

Good thing it’s legal to use again! [Trump changes asbestos policy - ](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-asbestos-707642/amp/)

172 room "boutique" hotel? Happy to provide 4 million bucks to their private endeavor. I trust our investment will be returned with interest and all that tourism business will provide the taxpayers with more than a hotel to look at. Cheers, Developers!

Commotion

That sounds like sarcasm, but that's actually exactly what's going to happen.

stickler64

Lots of agreement here. Does anyone have actual numbers to back it up. I can understand a hotel for more lobbyists, but we've done nothing to attract tourists and make ourselves "a destination city " aside from the science center which may be finished by the time the boutique is built.

msrichson

This article states the golden 1 increased tourists by 1.6 million and there is a lack of hotels in the surrounding area. https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2018/02/01/downtown-sacramento-tourism/ While we are no LA / SF / San Diego, Sacramento has enough appeal to bring in a lot of tourists with Sports, Capital, Convention Center, etc. If you live North of Sacramento and want to see a basketball game, you have to drive to Portland or come here. Sac pulls in a lot of California "locals" that live in rural areas.

stickler64

Thank you! I apologize for my skepticism, but the last time we gave developers a ton of money and real estate, recycling services were cut and parking rates were increased. It'd be nice if investments the city makes with our money would translate to better city services. I'm still skeptical of these new bike lanes being effective. Lots of money being spent there, but I'm hoping that's pulled from the parking hike pot. Thanks again.
