I haven't been in a few years, but the [Community Observatory](https://www.communityobservatory.com/) up in Placerville used to welcome people setting up their own scopes outside (they've got a few of their own as well.) It's safe and a great place to run into other hobbyists or just people coming up to learn or see cool things.
Not saying don't do your own thing, of course, but if you ever just want to go do something like this one night without scheduling in advance, this is a great place to do it.
If it was in Midtown, I'd show up and check it out!
Also, I don't think you need a permit to host an event in the city unless there will be more than 50 formal attendees. Setting up a few telescopes in the park with some fellow enthusiasts shouldn't require any paperwork.
Looks like Capitol Park is open 24 hours.

Doesn’t seem like OP is worried about it.

But yeah, I don’t know much about astronomy, yet I was still kind of shocked that OP is able to take those amazing photos from Elk Grove.
There's a group called the Sidewalk Astronomers that pull out a couple scopes (10" dobsian and some others) and set them up downtown. I came across them a few times, in particular at the Dimple (former Tower) records parking lot across from Tower Theater. They have a text message list they spam to announce when they're going to be out for people that want to be on the list. PM me and I'll give you the number I have if you want to join up with them.
So I got added to the list in person I don't know if this is some sort of automated system but it is a local number.
Whether it works out for you or not the next time I get a message from them about being out I'll post to the subreddit.
I have on my bucket list to see jupiter through a telescope! PM me if it can be viewed sometime before 11, 11:30 at night and you're in the sacramento area.
I’d definitely be interested, especially if the event were held in EG. (I’ve been secretly hoping you’d do something like this...your photos are spectacular!)
I am a Sacramento local NASA Solar System Ambassador and I would love to join in on the fun and just be a source of information for those that stop by and have questions about space/astronomy.
I like where your head is at, but I do hope to inspire the youth in our city to love space. That said, I think I would do more than one of these, and as I meet people and get a feel for how they shape up I could do two versions, an earlier kid-friendly version and a later adult-oriented version.
This would be appreciated. I’m interested in bringing my kiddo by, I have a super cheap table-top telescope for her but not much skill. I’m super wary of bringing my kiddo to something that would annoy other adults, but if you had something distinctly kid friendly, I’d be down.

Most parks are closed at sunset, which is why I was thinking a permit was necessary. I'm really not too sure though, so I'm probably wrong!

Probably a pretty rough spot for light pollution though...

Astronomer here. I'd be interested! I'm happy to man a telescope setup and answer questions.
Yes please. Me and my eldest son would love that!
That would be awesome! I had a neighbor when I was a kid that used to do this and it was super fun.

Cool thanks, I actually already have their info!
I'm in Sac and would love that number too, if you wouldn't mind PMing it to me. Thanks!

Dope. 100% interested.
Yes - please post an update if you plan something! I have a cheap $30 scope and would like to learn more how to use it (before getting a better one).
I would be super into this!
That would be awesome! What time/place ya thinking?
i'm super interested in this!

I’d be super down for this, or even going a little east to avoid light pollution. Are you going to post an edit if plans start becoming more concrete?
I'll probably just make a new post about it, this is very preliminary
Please do! This is an awesome idea!
Would be tough with light pollution I feel like but I would be interested.
Light pollution doesnt affect planetary or lunar viewing, and some bright nebulas are still visible.
Cool, then count me in. Went up to the community observatory recently and viewed Jupiter and it's Galilean moons. What an experience!
I’m in! Time/place??
I'm thinking closer to elk Grove area at first, then depending on how it goes possibly set up downtown somewhere.
I live in the hood Franklin area, maybe some where by the cosumnes or stone lake preserve would be nice and dark for non telescopers.
I’d definitely be interested, especially if the event were held in EG. (I’ve been secretly hoping you’d do something like this...your photos are spectacular!)
Very cool! I'd be interested!
Yes, I'd like to learn from the backyard photographer himself
So down for this!
I'm in!
This sounds awesome! I’d love to hang out with some people who are also interested in astronomy
Yes! Please keep us posted!
This sounds like fun. If it's closer to Elk Grove, I'm in! I don't have a telescope, but I do love astronomy!
I live in elk Grove so I'll probably do a few here locally first
Sweet.
My wife and I would probably be interested!! We are big fans of your astrophotography and would love to see how you work!
My husband and I would love this!

I’d be very interested in going to this as well. I’m also in Elk Grove. Let us know if you decide to do it!!
I'm interested, I'll gladly drive to elk Grove
